Marine Ornithology
Marine predators are an important component of marine trophic webs, and their decline has important consequences on whole ecosystem dynamics. Understanding their movements and habits is vital for conservation, yet extremely challenging. Tracking technologies, coupled with a robust, reproducible, and quantitative analytical framework, are being used to successfully identify Important Conservation Areas (ICAs) for seabirds, which are wide-ranging and declining marine predators. However, the identification of such areas is skewed towards large-bodied seabird species, and there are few marine ICAs for small-bodied birds like storm petrels. We GPS-tracked Mediterranean Storm Petrels Hydrobates pelagicus melitensis breeding in northwestern Sardinia over three …

Nesting Distribution Of Masked Booby Sula Dactylatra At Trindade Island, Western South Atlantic Ocean, Victória R.F. Benemann, Leonardo D. Araújo, Arthur Z. Fabbris, Rosalinda C. Montone, Maria V. Petry
Marine Ornithology
The Masked Booby Sula dactylatra is a surface-nesting seabird that breeds on offshore islands across the tropical and subtropical oceans. On inaccessible rocky areas on Trindade Island, located about 1200 km from Espírito Santo, Brazil, the nesting of this species has been poorly studied. To model the species’ nesting habitat suitability at Trindade Island, we mapped active nests during the breeding seasons of 2017 and 2019, from October to November, using a hand-held Global Positioning System receiver and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. In order to identify key areas, we created nesting habitat suitability maps using seven different algorithms (Random Forest, …
Foraging Ecology Of Red-Billed Tropicbird Phaethon Aethereus In The Caribbean During Early Chick Rearing Revealed By Gps Tracking, Hannah Madden, Yvan Satgé, Bradley Wilkinson, Patrick G.R. Jodice
Foraging Ecology Of Red-Billed Tropicbird Phaethon Aethereus In The Caribbean During Early Chick Rearing Revealed By Gps Tracking, Hannah Madden, Yvan Satgé, Bradley Wilkinson, Patrick G.R. Jodice
Marine Ornithology
Investigating the foraging patterns of tropical seabirds can provide important information about their ocean habitat affinities as well as prey choice. Foraging studies of Red-billed Tropicbird Phaethon aethereus populations in the Caribbean are lacking. We sought to rectify this by opportunistically sampling regurgitates at nest sites on the island of St. Eustatius, Lesser Antilles, and by linking the GPS tracks of foraging adults to remotely sensed environmental variables. Diet samples were dominated by Exocoetidae (59.5%) and Belonidae (14.9%), although we were unable to identify 25.5% of samples due to digestion. Tropicbirds nesting on St. Eustatius exhibited diurnal foraging patterns, foraged …

Marine Ornithology
A native Australian corvid, Little Raven Corvus mellori, has emerged as a dominant and problematic predator of an ecologically and economically important seabird, the Little Penguin Eudyptula minor. In 2013, ravens successfully preyed upon clutches/broods of the burrow-nesting penguin, especially those in shallower, more accessible burrows. Individual raven size might mediate which ravens attack penguins; smaller ravens may be able to enter burrows more easily; alternatively, larger ravens may be more capable of overcoming penguin parental defence. Here, we consider the predator-prey interactions to assess whether associations with burrow characteristics persisted and examine whether raven size mediated propensity to prey …

Nocturnal Flight Activity By Northern Gannets Morus Bassanus In Response To Predator Presence, Kyle J.N. D’Entremont, William A. Montevecchi
Marine Ornithology
The Northern Gannet Morus bassanus typically flies only during the day, with minimal flight activity following civil twilight. Here we document nocturnal flight activity by Northern Gannets in response to predation risk by Eastern Coyotes Canis latrans. Eight parental gannets were fitted with GPS/time-depth recorders on 15 July 2021 at mainland nest sites at Cape St. Mary’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Previously, among 506 foraging trips in 2019 and 2020 that were investigated using biologging, only two were initiated at night, suggesting nocturnal departures for foraging are very rare at this colony. Then, however, killings of chicks by coyotes occurred within our …

We report an observation of a Spot-billed Pelican Pelecanus philippensis on 07 October 2021 in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. This is the first sight-record of the species in Indonesia since 1992.
At-Sea Movements Of The White Tern Gygis Alba In Waters Off Eastern Australia, Nicholas Carlile, Terence O’Dwyer
At-Sea Movements Of The White Tern Gygis Alba In Waters Off Eastern Australia, Nicholas Carlile, Terence O’Dwyer
Marine Ornithology
We present the first tracked movements of the medium-sized tropical White Tern Gygis alba, using Global Location Sensors (GLS), from a breeding colony on Lord Howe Island, South Pacific, Australia. The tracking period encompassed pre-breeding in 2018 to potential chick provisioning in the following season. Terns remained near Lord Howe Island during breeding, with some pre-egg-laying and post-nest failure trips 1 000 km distant. The average departure date from Lord Howe Island was 08 April (range: 21 March–22 April). The tern’s migration route was northwest towards the eastern Australian coast, skirting the Great Barrier Reef. Terns then spent the non-breeding …

Atlantic Yellow-Nosed Albatross Thalassarche Chlororhynchos Feeding On A Dead Sea Turtle, Fabio Schunck, Patrick Pina, Fábio Barata, Fábio Olmos
Marine Ornithology
Albatrosses mostly forage for fish, squid, and crustaceans (including discards from fishing vessels), but they also scavenge animal carcasses, a behavior still poorly characterized for some albatross species. In July 2021 during a pelagic birding trip off the coast of São Paulo State, Southeast Brazil, three Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross Thalassarche chlororhynchos were spotted feeding on the floating carcass of a Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta caretta. This behavior had not been previously documented in the literature, on-line citizen science platforms, or by personal observations. We believe this to be an uncommon feeding strategy for this albatross species.

Owl Depredation At A Re-Establishing Colony Of White-Faced Storm Petrel Pelagodroma Marina, Nicholas Carlile, Chris Lloyd
Marine Ornithology
We report the depredation by a single Eastern Barn Owl Tyto javanica delicatula on prospecting White-faced Storm Petrels Pelagodroma marina during the re-establishment phase of a colony on Big Island, off Port Kembla, New South Wales, Australia in 2018. Storm petrels were likely extirpated from this colony 56 years previously when invasive weeds rendered their habitat inaccessible. Restoration of vegetation together with storm petrel call broadcasting, commencing in 2014, resulted in significant increases in prospecting numbers, culminating in breeding (three pairs) in the 2017/18 austral summer season. A significant depredation event (> 59 adults) occurred between August and September 2018, …
Observations Of Leucistic ʻUaʻU (Hawaiian Petrel Pterodroma Sandwichensis) On LānaʻI, HawaiʻI, André F. Raine, Rachel S. Sprague
Observations Of Leucistic ʻUaʻU (Hawaiian Petrel Pterodroma Sandwichensis) On LānaʻI, HawaiʻI, André F. Raine, Rachel S. Sprague
Marine Ornithology
The ‘Ua‘u (Hawaiian Petrel Pterodroma sandwichensis) is an endangered petrel endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. In this short paper, we describe two cases of Hawaiian Petrels with leucistic plumage recorded on the island of La¯na‘i. In both cases, the birds were chicks that fledged successfully in different years from the same burrow. There is only one other documented case of leucism recorded for this species in the Hawaiian Islands despite intensive monitoring of petrel burrows on Kaua‘i, La¯na‘i, and Maui over the last few decades, highlighting the rarity of this plumage aberration.

Foraging Areas Of Nesting Ainley's Storm Petrel Hydrobates Cheimomnestes, Fernando Medrano, Sarah Saldanha, Julio Hernández-Montoya, Yuliana Bedolla-Guzmán, Jacob González-Solís
Marine Ornithology
Acquiring basic knowledge such as at-sea distribution is often difficult for cryptic seabird species. Northern storm petrels (Hydrobatidae) are one family of seabirds that includes several cryptic species, including Ainley’s Storm Petrel Hydrobates cheimomnestes, which appears quite similar to southern Leach’s H. leucorhous and Townsend’s H. socorroensis Storm Petrels when at sea. For the first time, we describe the at-sea distribution of breeding Ainley’s Storm Petrels obtained using GPS tracking. We found that these birds visit waters of the eastern North Pacific between central Baja California, Mexico and southern Alta California, USA. These findings expand existing knowledge of the range …

Successful Breeding By Black-Legged Kittiwakes Rissa Tridactyla At The Only Colony Along Canada's Pacific Coast, Kirk A. Hart, Kenneth G. Wright, Vivian Pattison, J. Mark Hipfner
Marine Ornithology
The Black-legged Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla is a widely distributed and well-studied northern hemisphere seabird. Authoritative publications document the existence of breeding colonies in Canada’s Arctic and Atlantic regions but not in the Pacific region. We visited the small (ca. 50 pairs in recent years) kittiwake breeding colony at Holland Rock, British Columbia, in July and August 2021, and documented what we believe to be the first record of successful breeding at this site. Previous records have documented successful breeding no further south than 58° latitude in Alaska, ~600 km to the north, making Holland Rock the southernmost colony in the …

Upwelling Links Reproductive Success And Phenology In Tropical Brown Boobies Sula Leucogaster, Ilse Esparza, Kyle H. Elliott, Oris G. Gallardo, Hector M. Guzman
Marine Ornithology
For organisms living in seasonal environments, timing of breeding is key to ensuring reproductive success. Accordingly, temperate and polar seabird species follow seasonal pulses, matching their breeding events with peaks in ocean productivity. However, the seasonality of breeding has been much less explored in tropical seabirds. Here, we report seasonal variation in oceanography that affects reproductive success of the Brown Booby Sula leucogaster, a species widely distributed in the tropics. We monitored 61 nests during the 2019 breeding season at Bona Island, Gulf of Panama, and collected remote-sensing information for upwelling, sea-surface temperature, rainfall, chlorophyll-α concentration, wind speed, and wind …
Common Mergansers Mergus Merganser Use Wings To Pursue A Fish Underwater, Anthony B. Lapsansky, Robert H. Armstrong
Common Mergansers Mergus Merganser Use Wings To Pursue A Fish Underwater, Anthony B. Lapsansky, Robert H. Armstrong
Marine Ornithology
Common Mergansers Mergus merganser dive into lakes, rivers, and coastal waters to feed on fish and other aquatic prey. This species and others in the genus Mergus are traditionally classified as foot-propelled divers. When submerged, mergansers are expected to swim by kicking their feet, holding their wings close to their bodies. Here, we report, with video evidence, an event in which four mergansers used their wings underwater to chase down and capture a large fish. Documentation of wing use by this classically defined “foot-propelled diver” illustrates the gaps in our understanding of avian diving physiology, hydrodynamics, and behavior.

Salvin's Albatross Thalassarche Salvini Interacting With Freezer Trawlers In Waters Of The Patagonian Shelf, Rubén F. Dellacasa, Leandro N. Chavez, Leandro L. Tamini
Marine Ornithology
We present a new record of Salvin’s Albatross Thalassarche salvini in waters of the Patagonian continental shelf. During a seabird census on 06 December 2019, a sub-adult individual within a mixed-species flock was observed eating fishery discards. In addition, we review sightings of this species outside its known core range using published records and other information. The species’ presence in Argentine waters has possibly been underestimated and further work to elaborate its interaction with fishery fleets is required.

Movements And Asynchronous Nesting Of The Peruvian Tern Sternula Lorata In Chile And Peru, Thomas P. Ryan, Bárbara Olmedo Barrera, Sylvia Hernández Aquez, Michael T. Hallworth
Marine Ornithology
The Peruvian Tern Sternula lorata is an endangered seabird that nests asynchronously in different parts of its nesting range from northern Chile to Ecuador. Asynchronous nesting raises the possibility of counting individuals more than once during annual population censuses. We deployed 10 light-level archival tags (geolocators) to terns at the nesting ground in Mejillones, Chile, at the southern end of this species’ range during 06–11 September 2015, and we retrieved three the following year at the same location. Results showed that the tagged birds remained at the nesting grounds in Mejillones from July to December then migrated north, some in …

Seabird Abundance And Distribution Off Western Iberian Waters Estimated Through Aerial Surveys, Hélder Araújo, Pedro Correia-Rodrigues, Jorge Bastos-Santos, Marisa Ferreira, Andreia T. Pereira, Jose Martinez-Cedeira, José Vingada, Catarina Eira
Marine Ornithology
Western Iberian waters are important migratory flyways, stopover sites, and wintering areas for several of the world’s seabird species. To describe seabird species composition, distribution, and abundance in these waters, we performed six aerial surveys in September and/ or October of each year, 2010–2015, covering 74 840 km2. Using line-transect methodology, 27 396 seabird sightings from 17 taxonomic groups were recorded along 10496.3 nautical miles (19 433 km). Using the program “Distance,” annual and overall abundance estimates were obtained for nine taxonomic groups: Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus, Great Shearwater Ardenna gravis, Cory’s Shearwater Calonectris borealis, shearwaters, Northern Gannet Morus bassanus, …

The Tropicbirds Phaethon Spp. Of The Islas Desventuradas Archipelago, Chile, Manuel Marín, Rodrigo González
Marine Ornithology
We found nesting Red-billed and Red-tailed tropicbirds Phaethon aethereus and P. rubricauda in the Islas Desventuradas archipelago, Chile. We visited Islote González on 14–15 December 2020 and on 23 August 2021. During the December visit, we encountered a colony of Red-billed Tropicbirds totaling a minimum of 62 breeding pairs. The nests were in cavities on steep cliffs and slopes located mainly on the northern part of the island, and we were able to access 34, of which 11 had eggs, 11 had nestlings of different ages, and 12 were active but empty. During the August visit, we found four nests …

Albatross And Petrel Interactions With An Artisanal Squid Fishery In Southern Peru During El Niño, 2015-2017, Cristian Moreno, Javier Quiñones
Marine Ornithology
We report on the occurrence of albatrosses (Diomedeidae) and petrels (Procellariidae) associated with an artisanal small-scale fishery (SSF) for Humboldt Squid Dosidicus gigas in waters of southern Peru during El Niño 2015–2016 and coastal El Niño 2017. We deployed as observers on a number of fishing trips to assess seabird interactions. White-chinned Petrels Procellaria aequinoctialis and Waved Albatross Phoebastria irroata were the most abundant species observed, followed by Salvin’s Thalassarche salvini and Chatham T. eremita albatross, and Cape Petrels Daption capense. The majority of procellariid species (> 60% of total birds) visited while vessels were positioned over the continental slope. …

Infanticide In Highly Urbanized Colonies Of Black Skimmers Rynchops Niger, Elizabeth A. Forys, Sarah K. Beres, Abigail L. Mckay, Olivia N. Spicer
Marine Ornithology
Infanticide, which is the killing of dependent offspring, occurs in many species of colonial seabirds. Most infanticide attempts are made when chicks wander outside their parents’ territories and are more likely to occur when the colony experiences a disturbance or food is limited. Our objective was to determine the rate of infanticide at three Black Skimmer Rynchops niger colonies located on highly urbanized beaches in Pinellas County, Florida, USA. Infanticide occurred 42 times during 3 223 hours of monitoring (0.013 attempts per hour) over four breeding seasons (2018–2021). More than one third of the infanticide attempts occurred after a disturbance, …

Historical Distribution And Current Population Status Of Tufted Puffins Fratercula Cirrhata In Canada's California Current System, Louise K. Blight, Gregory Mcclelland
Marine Ornithology
Unpublished accounts indicate that the number of Tufted Puffin Fratercula cirrhata colonies in western Canada has declined in recent decades. However, a lack of recent colony count data makes it impossible to determine current trends. Here we compile published and unpublished information for Tufted Puffins in the Canadian portion of the California Current System (i.e., from the vicinity of the Scott Islands south to the Canada-US border) to update understanding of the species’ status in the region, and to assemble available information in a single source. We found historical records of three additional colonies over those in pre-existing compilations, bringing …
