Investigating The Relationship Between Noun Classes And Plant Folk Taxonomy In Chasu Language Of Kilimanjaro Region In Tanzania, Peter Rabson Mziray
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The current study investigates the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu (G 22). The study focuses on two objectives: the first objective is to describe the plant folk taxonomy in Chasu and the second objective is to determine the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu. Data were collected from rural villages in Same and Mwanga districts by using free listing, field interviews (jungle-walk-and-identify), and written texts containing Chasu plant names. The findings reveal that Chasu folk taxonomy reflects different ethnobotanical categories; including a unique beginner which is mmea/mimea ‘plant(s)’, and three life …
Beyond Money: Early Asset-Building Policy Supports Mothers, Strengthens Families, And Builds Children’S Futures, Jin Huang, Michael Sherraden, Margaret Clancy, Lissa Johnson
Beyond Money: Early Asset-Building Policy Supports Mothers, Strengthens Families, And Builds Children’S Futures, Jin Huang, Michael Sherraden, Margaret Clancy, Lissa Johnson
Center for Social Development Research
To foster stronger futures for children and families in the United States, policymakers and researchers are increasingly turning their attention to early-life asset-building policies, recognizing that such policies are vital components of family well-being and support. In this brief, CSD researchers discuss evidence from the SEED for Oklahoma Kids experiment (SEED OK), which shows that Child Development Account policy shapes mothers, families, and children in profound ways. Child Development Accounts, they conclude, represent a scalable and bipartisan family-support policy, offering early and automatic foundation that reinforces parental hopes and planning while promoting both equity, through progressively structured design, and responsibility, …
Literacies Of Resistance: How Florida Teachers Story Policy Navigation And Response, Katharine E. Hull
Literacies Of Resistance: How Florida Teachers Story Policy Navigation And Response, Katharine E. Hull
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Teachers are inundated with education legislation and the policy texts and discourses that surround them. Over nine months beginning in March 2024, I collaborated with three Florida P-12 teachers to explore their literacy practices and stories as they engaged with policy in a state that has recently passed an astounding amount of education legislation. This study explored how (1) teachers story the current policy context and their roles within it; (2) teachers use literacy practices to understand and respond to P/policies that impact their labor/working lives; and (3) teachers’ literate identities, agency, and collectivity intersect and shape one another. Guided …

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVES: Acute laryngeal injury (ALgI) is created as a result of endotracheal tube pressure ulcer formation leading to fibrosis and inflammation. This condition often leads to airway obstruction and voice and swallowing dysfunction. This study demonstrates a reliable animal model of ALgI to reproduce the acute wound process seen clinically, to explore the pathophysiology of this disease process, and to serve as a reproducible injury suitable for the evaluation of therapeutic interventions.
METHODS: An ALgI model was developed in New Zealand White rabbits using precise mucosal stripping of the posterior larynx, followed by intubation with an oversized 4.0 endotracheal tube …
Public School Districts Should Close Their “Alternative” And “Continuation” High Schools, Sean J. Drake
Public School Districts Should Close Their “Alternative” And “Continuation” High Schools, Sean J. Drake
Center for Policy Research
Public school districts across the country funnel academically struggling students into "alternative" or "continuation" high schools designed to help them catch up on credits and graduate on time. However, these schools often reproduce more inequality than they alleviate. This brief summarizes findings from a two-year ethnographic case study of an alternative high school in suburban Los Angeles, California. The author finds that these schools offer limited curricula and no extracurricular opportunities, while Black, Latino, and low-income students are vastly overrepresented compared to district averages. Students transferred to alternative schools are also more likely to drop out than low-performing peers who …

Accurate measurement of skin temperature is crucial to understanding responses to heat. We tested the hypothesis that intradermal temperature would differ from skin surface temperature during ambient heating with and without fan and water spray (24 degrees C). Nine healthy adults rested in an environmental chamber maintained at 40 degrees C and 15% relative humidity with and without fan, fan + water spray, and water spray. We assessed temperature in the dermal space (intradermal) and on the skin surface (surface) using thermocouple microprobes. In addition, we measured skin temperature using a standard uninsulated thermocouple taped to the skin (standard). During …

Dictators And Lying Dictators: An Experimental Investigation Of Preference Based-Group Biases In Chinese And American Interactions, Aaron S. Berman, Saika Cer Askin, Shapeng Jiang, David Porter, Jason Shachat
ESI Working Papers
This study examines group-conditional generosity and behavior using students from Chapman University in the United States and Wuhan University in China. Participants make allocation decisions in either a standard Dictator Game (DG) or a Lying Dictator Game (LDG), where a privately reported die roll determines the allocation. We vary whether participants interact with members of their own or the other university community. The LDG game, through the possibility of plausible deniability, allows for the moderation of image concerns that potentially influence DG behavior. We complement these tasks with individual decision benchmarks that exclude the Receiver to control for group differences …
Development Of An Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline For Discharging Patients With Substance Use Disorder (Sud) From Outpatient Treatment To Community Care, Emmanuel Onyeani
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addressed a gap in practice in an outpatient treatment center for discharging patients with substance use disorder (SUD), addressing the need for follow-up care and relapse prevention due to the widespread impact of SUD. Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) help healthcare professionals make informed decisions for specific clinical situations. The guiding question asked whether an expert panel would evaluate and validate a CPG developed from current, evidence-based literature and recommendations with 70% agreement using the AGREE II tool. The CPG focused on continuity of care, access to resources, and relapse prevention strategies. Seven expert …

Evidence for an association between insulin-like growth factors (IGF) and multiple myeloma (MM) is inconsistent. We examined total IGF-I concentrations and risk of MM by combining baseline serological data among UK Biobank participants (n = 444 187; 732 incident MM) with a two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis using identified genetic variants associated with circulating total IGF-I and IGF-binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) in the InterLymph consortium (2434 MM and their 2567 controls). Finally, additional lymphoid neoplasm (LN) subtypes were included for comparison with the main hypothesis. Circulating IGF-I level was positively associated with MM risk Hazard ratio-HR-per one standard deviation-SD-increase …
A Rare Case Of Chilaiditi Syndrome As A Driver Of Chronic Respiratory Failure, Paige C. Adams, Daniel Kramer
A Rare Case Of Chilaiditi Syndrome As A Driver Of Chronic Respiratory Failure, Paige C. Adams, Daniel Kramer
Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Faculty Papers
Chilaiditi sign is a rare radiographic finding demonstrating interposition of the colon between the liver and the diaphragm; Chilaiditi syndrome is the manifestation of gastrointestinal or respiratory symptoms secondary to this finding. This syndrome rarely can be associated with acute and chronic respiratory failure. We report a case of a 66-year-old woman with chronic hypercapnic and hypoxemic respiratory failure due to severe restrictive pulmonary mechanics in the setting of Chilaiditi syndrome. Imaging showed an elevated right hemidiaphragm initially concerning for hemidiaphragm paralysis; however a fluoroscopic Sniff test suggested normal diaphragm function. Despite hospitalisation for aggressive bowel decompression combined with noninvasive …

Improving Discharge Planning To Reduce Readmissions In Non-Teaching Urban Hospitals, Darlene Michelle Taylor
Improving Discharge Planning To Reduce Readmissions In Non-Teaching Urban Hospitals, Darlene Michelle Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hospital discharge planning is a critical determinant of patient outcomes, organizational performance, and financial sustainability. Many non-teaching urban hospitals continue to struggle with high readmission rates, especially among socially vulnerable populations such as the homeless. The purpose of this integrative review was to examine discharge planning strategies that would reduce readmissions, enhancing patient throughput, and mitigating financial penalties in non-teaching urban hospitals. The review question focused on effective discharge planning strategies that would improve readmission rates in non-teaching urban hospitals. A systematic integrative review of peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2025 was conducted and 25 quantitative and qualitative studies …

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurogenetic disorder characterized by motor coordination and cognitive deficits. In AS, hippocampal neurons show reduced filamentous (F-)actin, a decrease we also reported in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons, along with impaired mechanosensitive ion channel activity. Currently, there are no pharmacological targets to prevent the decrease of F-actin in AS. Here, we utilize a first-in-class selective cofilin inhibitor (SZ-3) to restore PIEZO2 function in DRG neurons and glutamate-evoked currents in hippocampal neurons from AS mice. Using atomic force microscopy, we demonstrate that inhibiting cofilin, an actin-severing protein, with SZ-3 increases cellular stiffness by stabilizing the actin …

Gangliosides are acidic glycosphingolipids involved in cell-adhesion, signal-transduction and tumor progression. GD3 synthase (GD3S/ST8SIA1), a key enzyme in ganglioside biosynthesis, is upregulated in many cancers, including GD2+ breast cancer stem-like cells (BCSCs) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Here, we demonstrated the immunomodulatory role of GD3S and identified a fully humanized anti-GD2 antibody, naxitamab, as a therapeutic tool to target GD3S/GD2+ breast tumors. GD3S expression correlates with immune-checkpoint activation and reduced immune infiltration. Ectopic overexpression of GD3S suppressed macrophage-mediated phagocytosis and NK or T cell-induced cell death in BC cells. Lipidomic analysis identified GD2 as the major effector ganglioside …

Malware has become increasingly sophisticated over the years, with zero-day attacks emerging at an alarming pace. Effective detection and analysis demand real malware samples, which are expensive and skill-dependent to extract. As a result, generating high quality synthetic samples from scarce data sets becomes a crucial method for strengthening detection software. This paper focuses on presenting generation techniques that optimize the embedding space to produce high-quality synthetic samples, even under constrained datasets. The dataset used in this paper consists of 500 Windows malware API call samples that were processed using embedding and Generative AI (Gen AI) techniques to generate synthetic …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The impact of germline pathogenic variants (PVs) in cancer predisposition genes on risk of prostate cancer (PCa) remains understudied in large populations of African ancestry. This study aims to characterize the range of genetic risk of PCa and aggressive disease phenotypes in men of African ancestry.
METHODS: We analyzed 7176 PCa cases and 4873 controls from seven countries across North America and Africa to assess the association between PVs in 37 cancer predisposition genes and the risk of overall, aggressive, and metastatic PCa. Genes significantly associated with PCa risk were used to estimate lifetime absolute risk based …

Relative humidity and water activity (aH) reductions have been known to suppress the hydration of anhydrous cement clinker phases. However, the relationship between ye'elimite (C4A3$) hydration kinetics and water activity remain unclear. This study employs experimental and thermodynamic modeling approaches to investigate the influence of water activity on ye'elimite hydration in the "C4A3$ + water", and "C4A3$ + gypsum + water" systems. Experimental findings indicate that as water activity decreases, C4A3$ hydration diminishes until the reaction is brought to a halt at a threshold aH. The critical aHand corresponding solubility constant of C4A3$ (KC4A3S¯) estimated from thermodynamic analysis are 0.46 …

Prior research shows that Akt-dependent phosphorylation of TopBP1 in S phase results in the switch of TopBP1/Treslin binding to TopBP1/E2F1 binding, which is important to prevent replication re-initiation in late S and G2 phases. Here, we demonstrate that contact, but not conformational, mutant p53 can override this switch by binding to both TopBP1 and Treslin, thereby facilitating persistent TopBP1/Treslin interaction in late S and G2 phases, which ultimately leads to over-firing of replication initiation. This increases micronuclei formation, which is further enhanced by genotoxic stressors such as doxorubicin, PARP inhibitors, or ATR inhibitors. Consequently, contact mutant p53 increases the sensitivity …

Influenza remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, with Black individuals disproportionately affected. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable due to their modulated immune state, placing them at increased risk of complications, hospitalization, and intensive care admission. Despite strong evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of maternal seasonal influenza vaccination (SIV), uptake remains suboptimal. This study employed a multi-method design to identify barriers and facilitators of maternal SIV uptake, with a particular focus on racial disparities.
Quantitative analyses utilized the Florida Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (FL PRAMS) dataset from the years 2018–2022. In the fully …
