Peculiarities In The Appearance And Moult Of Long-Tailed Duck, Peter S. Burke, Tim Lucas, Kevin A. Mclaughlin
Ontario Birds
This paper reviews the literature on moults and resulting appearances of the Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis; LTDU), focusing on the high degree of plumage variation observed in this species, which is unique among ducks. In addition to exhibiting three visibly different plumages in its first year of life, and two visibly different plumages every year thereafter, the LTDU also shows a high variation among individuals, due, at least in part, to individual variation in the prolongation of each moult. This has led to confusion for those describing LTDU plumage and moult patterns in the past. Previous (and some erroneous) hypotheses …

Loafing And Sleeping Behaviour Of Trumpeter Swans, Harry G. Lumsden, Gerry Markhoff, Gary Lane, Allan Scott
Loafing And Sleeping Behaviour Of Trumpeter Swans, Harry G. Lumsden, Gerry Markhoff, Gary Lane, Allan Scott
Ontario Birds
An observational study of loafing and sleeping behaviour of Trumpeter Swans was conducted in southern Ontario throughout the year in 2018 and 2019. Like other birds, these swans have the ability to close down one brain hemisphere at a time during rest, which is indicated by eye closure. We quantified rates of closure of eyes during sleeping bouts for both breeding and non-breeding swans. Single eye closure varied in frequency, duration and in terms of which hemisphere was shut down. Increasing duration of eye closure over time indicated an increased sense of security with surrounding in one mated pair. Proportion …

Changes In Abundance Of Least Bitterns In Ontario,1995-2019, Michael J. Kirchin, Giuseppe E. Fiorino, Greg P. Grabas, Douglas C. Tozer
Ontario Birds
Populations of many breeding marsh bird species continue to decline in the southern Great Lakes basin, although this is not the case for the threatened Least Bittern. Recent analysis based on data from the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program of Birds Canada shows that its abundance has increased consistently since the mid-2000s throughout the lower Great Lakes in the U.S. and Canada, with the highest abundance occurring in recent years. In this study, we expanded on these findings by assessing patterns in abundance of Least Bitterns among different geographical locations in Ontario and across years from 1995 to 2019. We …

Common Gallinule Banding In Ontario, Ross W. Wood, Barbara A. Campbell, Shawn W. Meyer, Tore Buchanan
Ontario Birds
Between 2012 and 2017, we conducted a Common Gallinule banding study to determine the feasibility of catching and banding gallinule with an airboat in Ontario, estimate how many birds could potentially be banded and subsequently encountered, calculate an index of productivity and assess whether enough data could be obtained to inform management decisions and conservation planning. We captured gallinules using dip nets and spotlights at night from an airboat. In total, we banded 440 (approximately 28%) of the 1,564 gallinules that have ever been banded in Ontario. Five of our banded birds were subsequently encountered, four within Ontario and one …

Virtual Nurse Discharge: Improving Patient And Nurse Experience, Dina Flihan, Christine Odell, Stacey Davis, Carolyn Oates, Fay Wright
Patient Experience Journal
This case study reviews the virtual discharge nurse (VDN) process and its impact on patient experience and nursing workflow as an exemplar of an effective telehealth innovation at a community hospital 23-bed Short Stay Unit (SSU). At the SSU, the daily turnover rate of more than 50% of the unit census challenged the nurses’ ability to provide comprehensive individualized discharge education. SSU patient experience scores measured by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) reflected opportunities to improve the discharge process. Therefore, the direct care nurses on SSU suggested a trial innovation of a VDN to improve …

Background. People with lived experience of mental health and/or substance use challenges and families (PWLE/F) are increasingly engaged in research, providing positive impacts. However, effective engagement can be challenging, including ensuring effective communication. This qualitative study sought to understand the communication preferences of PWLE/F who are engaged in mental health and substance use health research. Method. A total of 18 participants (aged 19 to 79) took part in one of four focus group discussions. A semi-structured interview guide was used to facilitate the discussions. Focus group transcripts were analyzed using codebook thematic analysis. PWLE/F were engaged in all stages of …

Patients’ Experiences Of Triage And Waiting In Emergency Departments: A Cross-Sectional Survey, Carrie Janerka, Leslie D Gavin, Fenella J Gill, Pcc Ed Triage Group
Patient Experience Journal
Objective: Patient experience is a core aspect of care quality. Patient experiences of emergency departments (EDs) have been examined, but there has been less focus on ED triage and waiting areas, often patients’ initial point of contact with a health service. This study aimed to understand patients’ experiences of ED triage and waiting room. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted across five Australian EDs to understand experiences of patients 14 years and over before, during and after triage. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively and explored for correlations. Qualitative responses for suggested improvements were analysed using a conventional content analysis approach. …

Classifications Of Gradient Almost Ricci Solitons Within The Framework Of Closed Conformal Vector Fields, Akram Ali, Fatemah Mofarreh, Jae Won Lee
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we consider gradient almost Ricci solitons with nonparallel closed conformal vector fields. We classify gradient almost Ricci solitons and show that a complete, noncompact gradient almost Ricci soliton admitting a nonparallel closed conformal vector field, is locally a warped product with Einstein fibers, while in the second case, under additional hypothesis, gradient almost Ricci soliton is totally umbilical if and only if it has constant scalar curvature.

An Exploration Of Sleep Experiences Among Family Caregivers Of Older Adults With Alzheimer’S And Related Diseases, Caroline Bollettiero
An Exploration Of Sleep Experiences Among Family Caregivers Of Older Adults With Alzheimer’S And Related Diseases, Caroline Bollettiero
Dissertations
As we age our sleep experiences decline in quality and our sleep disturbances increase with chances of full effective sleep diminishing. Older adults do not sleep as well as younger adults, with many older adults lacking an effective circadian rhythm. This lack of a proper circadian rhythm has been known to affect cognition and cause an increase in memory impairment. For older adults (OA) with Alzheimer’s and related disorders (AD) poor sleep affects not only their memory impairment and cognition but often impacts family caregivers (FGCs) sleep experiences. FCGs of community dwelling OA with AD are faced with a variety …

A Comprehensive Framework To Enhance Holistic Care For Postpartum Single Mothers, Stephanie Dumas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract Postpartum depression remains a significant challenge for single mothers who face emotional, financial, and social barriers with limited support. In Palm Beach County, Florida, where many households are led by single parents, existing services are often uncoordinated and lack trauma-informed approaches that address the realities of mothers during the postpartum period. The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to explore the perceptions of human services professionals regarding the trauma-informed and holistic care interventions needed to support single mothers experiencing postpartum depression. The Garbhasanskar holistic care framework, which emphasizes emotional well-being, mindfulness, and the creation of safe and …

Introduction: Depressive symptoms are common in the growing geriatric surgical population and are associated with important patient-centred surgical outcomes, including postoperative delirium, discharge to postacute care facility and decline in functional status. Few interventions have been developed to address depressive symptoms in the perioperative setting.
Methods and analysis: We designed a feasibility and acceptability study of a nine-session problem-solving therapy (PST) telehealth perioperative intervention aimed at reducing postoperative functional decline and depressive symptoms among at-risk older adults undergoing major surgical procedures. Acceptability will be evaluated using a patient-centred five-question survey, assessing participant satisfaction and perceived usefulness of the perioperative intervention. …

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a diverse, multicultural context which has introduced ambitious policies and strategic plans to accelerate inclusive education. The extent to which culturally responsive teaching is reflected in inclusive classrooms across the country has not been captured. This study used a cross-sectional survey methodology employing the culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy scale as a survey instrument to examine teachers' perceived competence in implementing culturally responsive teaching practices with students with disabilities in inclusive classrooms. All mainstream schools in the UAE were approached to participate and data were collected from 999 teachers from public and private schools across …
Latching On: Equity In Breastfeeding Education, Tara Anderson Ba, Rn, Cbc
Latching On: Equity In Breastfeeding Education, Tara Anderson Ba, Rn, Cbc
Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background
Breastmilk is the optimal source of nutrition for newborns (WHO, 2019). Prenatal breastfeeding education best prepares families, yet not all patients attend hospital-offered classes due to associated fees. This gap may negatively impact knowledge and exclusive breastfeeding rates (Kehinde et al., 2022). To promote health equity, it is critical to provide accessible prenatal education to all patients, regardless of their ability to attend traditional classes.
Purpose
Our hospital aims to ensure all patients make informed infant feeding decisions. This project sought to provide prenatal breastfeeding education in outpatient Labor and Delivery Triage and evaluate its impact on patient knowledge …
