Demise Of The Pojoy And Bomto, John H. Hann Mar 2022

Demise Of The Pojoy And Bomto, John H. Hann

Florida Historical Quarterly

South-central Florida’s aboriginal inhabitants remain among the least known of Florida’s native peoples during the first Spanish period because Spaniards did not maintain a permanent presence among them. It is likely that a number of the region’s tribes disappeared without even their names having been recorded. That is true particularly of the peoples living in the interior beyond the southernmost missions and those living on or near the Gulf coast between Tampa Bay’s southern shore and the Caloosahatchee River. Some of those peoples began to appear fleetingly in Spanish records during the 1710-1740 period when attacks by Indians allied to …

Hurston Goes To War: The Army Signal Corps In Saint Augustine, Gordon Patterson Mar 2022

Hurston Goes To War: The Army Signal Corps In Saint Augustine, Gordon Patterson

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the fall of 1942, Zora Neale Hurston returned to Saint Augustine. She had come to “this city because it [was] a quiet place to sit down and write.“1 By January 1943, she had moved to Daytona Beach. Her brief stay in Saint Augustine was eventful. She finished revising Dust Trucks on a Road and J. B. Lippincott published it in November. Simultaneously, Hurston and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings established a “close friendship.“2 Hurston’s relations, however, were less cordial with William Gray, Jr., the newly appointed president of Florida Normal and Industrial Institute. She let it be known that she considered …

Defending America By Aiding The Allies: The British Student Pilots At Arcadia And Clewiston, 1941-1945, Thomas D. Greenshaw

Florida Historical Quarterly

Monday morning, June 8, 1941, 99 British citizens arrived at the Atlantic Coast Line depot in Arcadia, Florida. Although dressed in civilian clothes, all were members of the Royal Air Force destined for training as pilots in the United States before returning to defend king and country in the raging European war. It was a delicate situation. The United States was trying to aid Britain and her allies while maintaining its official neutrality.

A Botanical Mystery The Elusive Trail Of The Datil Pepper To St. Augustine, Jean Andrews Mar 2022

A Botanical Mystery The Elusive Trail Of The Datil Pepper To St. Augustine, Jean Andrews

Florida Historical Quarterly

Since December 1984, when Peppers: The Domesticated Capsicums was published, interest in growing and eating capsicums has increased dramatically. Prior to that publication, little attention had been given to the historical aspects of the genus Capsicum, which is comprised of all the green and red peppers (pimientos) in the world, but does not include its namesake black pepper (pimienta) or Piper nigrum, a native of India, and a much wanted item in the pre-Columbian spice trade. Five-hundred years ago, while Christopher Columbus was searching for a shorter route to India and the East Indies in order to break the Muslim …

The Order Of The Holy Spirit: An Important Decoration From A 1715 Plate Fleet Wreck, John Debry Mar 2022

The Order Of The Holy Spirit: An Important Decoration From A 1715 Plate Fleet Wreck, John Debry

Florida Historical Quarterly

From the early sixteenth to middle eighteenth centuries, the Flota System was Spain’s lifeline to the riches of the Americas. Two fleets traveled more or less annually between Spain and the Americas; the squadron of Tierra Firme from Spain to South America, and the Flota de Nueva España toward Veracruz, Mexico. On the return voyage, the two fleets would often sail together for added safety and protection. The return voyage was more dangerous. The galleons were fully loaded with precious cargoes of gold, silver, jewelry, tobacco, spices, indigo, cochineal, leather, and other New World products. The crews were tired and …

Claude Pepper And The Seeds Of His 1950 Defeat, 1944-1948, James C. Clark Mar 2022

Claude Pepper And The Seeds Of His 1950 Defeat, 1944-1948, James C. Clark

Florida Historical Quarterly

Claude Pepper’s defeat in the 1950 Florida Democratic Senatorial primary has long been seen as the result of a vicious campaign in which his opponents used underhanded methods to win. But while the 1950 campaign between Pepper and George Smathers was one of the nastiest in Florida history, the roots of Pepper’s loss can be traced to 1945, when he began to feud with President Harry Truman and began courting the political left. Those two activities so badly damaged his standing in Florida that he lost the large following which had sent him to the U.S. Senate in three previous …

Beyond Basic: Transformational Potential Of Pandemic Pedagogy, Roy Schwartzman

Basic Communication Course Annual

The COVID-19 pandemic presents opportunities to foster resilience as an ongoing process of productively adapting to crises and change. The fundamental communication course can serve a key role in building resilience on several levels: personal (for students and teachers), across courses and communication programs, and community-wide. Lessons learned from the pandemic include judiciously adopting new technological tools, counteracting regressive institutional resilience that resists change, and maximizing inclusivity in course design and delivery.

In The Shadow Of Jackson: Uriah Blue's Expedition Into West Florida, Brian R. Rucker Mar 2022

In The Shadow Of Jackson: Uriah Blue's Expedition Into West Florida, Brian R. Rucker

Florida Historical Quarterly

Students of Florida history are well acquainted with General Andrew Jackson’s controversial invasions of Spanish Florida in 1814 and 1818. But what is not as well known is a related military expedition, that of Major Uriah Blue who led approximately 1,000 American forces into Spanish West Florida between December 1814 and January 1815. Andrew Jackson’s concurrent, and famous, battle with the British at New Orleans overshadowed Blue’s expedition. Yet, Blue’s troops played an integral part in Jackson’s overall plan. Both the expedition’s successes and failures affected future American-Spanish relations, for Jackson would reinvade Florida several years later to fight the …

Fontaneda Revisited: Five Descriptions Of Sixteenth-Century Florida, John E. Worth Mar 2022

Fontaneda Revisited: Five Descriptions Of Sixteenth-Century Florida, John E. Worth

Florida Historical Quarterly

The well-known relation of Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda, the Spanish sailor shipwrecked on the Florida coast in the mid sixteenth century, has correctly been described by David O. True as a document that “should share the top rank of Florida source records.“1 It constitutes one of the earliest descriptions of the Indians of Florida and is rich in ethnographic detail. Although the text of the body of Fontaneda’s account (the Memoir) and a separate fragment associated with it (the Memoranda) have been published by True in both transcribed and translated form, this published version came from Buckingham Smith’s transcription of …

Macronutrients And Water – Do They Matter In The Context Of Cognitive Performance In Athletes?, Ewa Karpecka, Barbara Fraczek

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Proper nutrition is a key factor in physical performance, but there are also indications of an impact of dietary components on the brain function. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the impact of macronutrients and water on cognitive performance. Assumptions of the Mediterranean diet correlate with better global cognition, episodic memory, lower risk of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases. In turn, a high-fat and high-sugar diet shows the opposite effect. Omega-3 fatty acids could be used as a preventive tool for cognitive decline, but there is still insufficient evidence if supplementation improves cognitive functions. The proper intake …

The current study explored differences in the attachment level of owners toward their pets and their perceived stress before and during the pandemic in China. The questionnaire, besides demographic information, included a modified version of the Companion Animal Bonding Scale (CABS) and the original form of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). A total of 261 questionnaires were collected. The respondents did not show any significant differences in attachment level toward …

Harmon Murray: Black Desperado In Late Nineteenth-Century Florida, Billy Jaynes Chandler Mar 2022

Harmon Murray: Black Desperado In Late Nineteenth-Century Florida, Billy Jaynes Chandler

Florida Historical Quarterly

North Florida was far from the Wild West, but for a time in the late nineteenth century it ceded little in the notoriety of its outlaws to that famous region. If Harmon Murray, leader of the “north Florida gang,” has not taken his place in history alongside Billy the Kid or Jesse James, it was hardly his fault. Though he was soon forgotten, at the time of his death in late summer 1891 Murray’s name was known throughout the state and beyond. The reasons for Murray’s quick rise to fame had much to do with his skill, courage, and sheer …

The Other Side Now: What Blanding Prisoners Of War Told The Wehrmacht, Robert D. Billinger, Jr. Mar 2022

The Other Side Now: What Blanding Prisoners Of War Told The Wehrmacht, Robert D. Billinger, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Fifty years after the arrival of German prisoners of war in Florida their story is still little known.1 Admittedly their presence was minimal since only about 4,000 out of the 378,000 German prisoners who spent time in America were detained in the state. Florida was one of forty-five states with POWs, and the base camp at Camp Blanding, with its fifteen side camps, was only one of 155 base camps in the continental United States.

In any enumeration of American historians of Florida who have significantly advanced the craft and expanded the field, one would name George Rainsford Fairbanks (1820-1906), our state’s first serious historian in the English language and charter member of the Historical Society of Florida in 1856; Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810-1871), first American scholar to collect and copy documentary materials for the history of Florida from archives in Spain; Woodbury Lowery (1853- 1906), whose two volumes, The Spanish Settlements within the Present Limits of the United States,1 first placed Florida historiography on a professional footing and established standards of research and citation …

"Florida And The British Investor Revisited": The William Moore Angas Papers At The University Of Florida, Frank Orser

Florida Historical Quarterly

In his 1954 article Alfred P. Tischendorf discussed briefly the role of fifteen British-owned companies in Florida around the turn of the century. 1 He concluded that these enterprises were devoted to development and attracting British immigrants. Generally little is known about British business practices in Florida since very few records exist in the United States. Details about two of the larger English companies, the Land Mortgage Bank and the Florida Syndicate, can now be examined through their business files, recently acquired by the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida and accessioned as the William Moore Angas …

William Tecumseh Sherman's Introduction To War, 1840-1842: Lesson For Action, Jane F. Lancaster

Florida Historical Quarterly

William Tecumseh Sherman graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1840, while the United States Army was fighting the Second Seminole War. About three months later this young second lieutenant, an Ohio native, received his first assignment as an officer, and joined the Third Artillery in Florida. Sherman spent the next seventeen months serving at three posts— Fort Pierce, Fort Lauderdale, and Picolata— from which he scouted swamps to find elusive Indians, led an expedition to bring in Coacoochee (Wild Cat)— one of the most colorful Seminole leaders— and commanded a supply depot. Background: The subject of this study is an analysis of the changes of tourist air traffic in Tunisia between 2009 and 2018. During this time, Tunisia saw political changes and worldwide-reported coverage of terrorist attacks on tourists (2014–2015). The aim of this study was to attempt to determine the extent to which the Tunisian Revolution and terrorist attacks have had a negative impact on the decline in the tourist traffic, and to assess the rate of return of the tourist traffic and income in this sector to the levels from before the Revolution. Material and methods: The main source of …
