New Teachers Enacting Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Literacy Instruction, Sarri A. Gibson
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This multiple case study investigated the experiences of majority culture teachers at the beginning of their careers as they navigated enacting culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) in their literacy instruction. The study explored how the new teachers described and enacted CRP in their classrooms, what they described as formative to their work as culturally relevant educators, what they identified as challenging, and what they found to be sustaining. The study shares case reports of each participant followed by a cross case analysis. Several themes were noteworthy from the analysis: 1) participants viewed an event or time period as formative, 2) participants …

Materials Science And Mechanosensitivity Of Living Matter, Alison E. Patteson, Merrill E. Asp, Paul A. Janmey
Physics - All Scholarship
Living systems are composed of molecules that are synthesized by cells that use energy sources within their surroundings to create fascinating materials that have mechanical properties optimized for their biological function. Their functionality is a ubiquitous aspect of our lives. We use wood to construct furniture, bacterial colonies to modify the texture of dairy products and other foods, intestines as violin strings, bladders in bagpipes, and so on. The mechanical properties of these biological materials differ from those of other simpler synthetic elastomers, glasses, and crystals. Reproducing their mechanical properties synthetically or from first principles is still often unattainable. The …

“I Can Math, Too!”: Reducing Math Anxiety In Stem-Related Courses Using A Combined Mindfulness And Growth Mindset Approach (Magma) In The Classroom, Tashana S. Samuel, Sebastien Buttet, Jared Warner
Publications and Research
Math anxiety has become an alarming social justice concern, as it results in negative academic consequences, contributes to disinterest and lack of persistence in STEM programs for underrepresented students, and limits their opportunities in STEM careers. According to research, this fear of math occurs long before students begin working on math problems. When high-math anxious students encounter math situations, anticipation anxiety consumes working memory capacity, inhibits learning, and causes them to severely underperform on mathematical tasks. However, very few studies have been conducted to embed psychological interventions in the classroom in an effort to mitigate both anticipation and execution anxiety. …

This paper offers that organizational underachievement sourced to workplace expertise is a product of bounded perspective constructed by the agency of expertise. Embedded in any bounded perspective is limitations to what can be seen. Organizations that seek to leverage expertise solely on their agency risk organizational silofication. We conclude that recognizing organizational silofication is an opportunity for organizations to address organizational underachievement by addressing the perspectives that create the hidden impediments limiting their overall potential.

Objective: Central executive training (CET) is a “Level 2” evidence-based treatment for improving ADHD-related executive dysfunction and behavioral symptoms, but the extent to which these gains extend to the disorder’s well-documented academic difficulties is unknown. Method: Across two clinical trials, 108 children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) 8–13 years old (M = 10.29, SD = 1.50; 32 girls; 75% White/Non-Hispanic) were treated with CET (n = 52), inhibitory control training (ICT; n = 29), or gold-standard behavioral parent training (BPT; n = 27). Results: CET was superior to BPT and ICT (d = 0.62–0.88) for improving masked teacher perceptions of academic …

Bacterial natural product biosynthetic genes, canonically clustered, have been increasingly found to rely on hidden enzymes encoded elsewhere in the genome for completion of biosynthesis. The study and application of lanthipeptides are frequently hindered by unclustered protease genes required for final maturation. Here, we establish a global correlation network bridging the gap between lanthipeptide precursors and hidden proteases. Applying our analysis to 161,954 bacterial genomes, we establish 5209 correlations between precursors and hidden proteases, with 91 prioritized. We use network predictions and co-expression analysis to reveal a previously missing protease for the maturation of class I lanthipeptide paenilan. We further …

Depression is one of the biggest health issues among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV, where sexual identity might play an intricate role. Yet, findings of the relationship between sexual identity and depression were mixed and few studies explored its underlying mechanisms. This study aimed to examine the association between sexual identity and depression, and the potential mediating role of HIV-related stigma and moderating role of age. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 203 MSM living with HIV in Guangxi, China. Participants provided information on sexual identity, depression, HIV-related stigma, and background information. Descriptive statistics, bivariate …

Theses and Dissertations
Historically, Standard American English (SAE) has been seen as superior to African American Vernacular English (AAVE), but both languages can be used interchangeably through the linguistic practice of code-switching. Code-switching pedagogies have been used to more effectively teach elementary students SAE while building on their knowledge of AAVE. Additionally, games have been inserted into the classroom to extend traditional English-language learning, which allows students to embody the language-learning experience in a setting with lower stakes and reduced judgment. Combining code-switching pedagogy with game-based learning, my game The Fence can be used in the classroom and at home to teach children …
Overview Of Bicameral Legislatures’ Potential Impact On The Executive Selection Process, Kyle Kopchak
Overview Of Bicameral Legislatures’ Potential Impact On The Executive Selection Process, Kyle Kopchak
Indiana Journal of Constitutional Design
Bicameral legislature is a common constitutional design model, with bicameral legislatures making up roughly 41 percent of all legislatures worldwide. As of April 2014, 79 bicameral and 113 unicameral systems were recorded in the database of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. In general, “bicameralism is more common in federal, large, and presidential states, while unicameralism is more common in unitary, small, parliamentary ones”. Bicameral systems operate two legislative chambers, both of which play a role in drafting and passing national legislation. However, each house often fulfills a unique role in the legislative process and is usually elected by different methods. Proponents of …
Factors Affecting Nurses' Intention To Leave Their Primary Nursing Position, Scott P. Kaye
Factors Affecting Nurses' Intention To Leave Their Primary Nursing Position, Scott P. Kaye
Dissertations
The United States is facing an imminent nurse staffing crisis. An aging workforce, an increasing elder population, and new staffing legislation have added to existing difficulties in retaining nurses. Retaining nurses is a priority in emergency departments, one of the few specialty departments that exceed the national average turnover rate, with an average of 95% of the nursing staff leaving their positions every five years.
This dissertation used dual-factor theory, dimensions of nursing surveillance, and intersectionality as theoretical frameworks; employed secondary analysis of the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (2018) dataset; and utilized hierarchical regression Modeling to examine the …

Taxonomy Of Ministerial Appointment Processes, Michelle Johnston
Taxonomy Of Ministerial Appointment Processes, Michelle Johnston
Indiana Journal of Constitutional Design
In parliamentary governments, executive power rests in an executive body of ministers commonly referred to as “the cabinet” or “the government.” Cabinet ministers, including the prime minister, are tasked with researching, drafting, and proposing laws and policies to their legislative counterparts in parliament. Because cabinets are generally comprised at least partially of select members of parliament, parliamentary systems are characterized by the interactions and interdependence of the legislative and executive branches. Whereas presidential systems lean into separation of powers to restrict governmental power, parliamentary systems rely on integration of the branches to ensure that political powers remain in check. Executive …

Oral Narrative Interventions Implemented By Teachers, Speech-Language Pathologists, And Parents, Megan S. Kirby
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Children’s oral language skills in preschool through early elementary grades can predict reading, writing, and social outcomes ten years into the future. Oral narrative language, which includes storytelling, is a long-established cultural practice in communities around the world. Narratives are the monologic re/telling of a real of fictitious event and people have used them for centuries to entertain, make sense of current and past events, and provide instruction. Oral storytelling does not require physical materials and can be tailored to the cultural and linguistic values of the community in which they are used. Thus, the portability, utility, and ubiquitous nature …
