Insecta Mundi

This checklist synthesises historic collections of Sphingidae (Lepidoptera) made during the summer months in the Cayman Islands in 1938 and 1975 with modern records drawn from a variety of sources. We report observations and collections made in all seasons of the year and provide natural history and larval food details. Four species, Phryxus caicus (Cramer) in all three islands, plus Isognathus rimosa (Grote), Enyo lugubris (Linnaeus), and Eumorpha satellitia (Linnaeus) in Grand Cayman only, are here reported as new records, for a total of 25 sphingid species occurring in the Cayman Islands. Seven species are new records for Grand Cayman, …

Coda: A Wicked Problems Mindset For Educational Development, Randall Bass Apr 2022

Coda: A Wicked Problems Mindset For Educational Development, Randall Bass

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This brief piece has two purposes: to reflect on the argument in “What’s the Problem Now?” (Bass, 2020) in light of the events of the past two years and to give that essay’s core argument—that the problem of learning in higher education is a wicked problem—a more practical grounding for how it can shape the work of educational developers going forward. For the latter especially, the argument builds off of the outstanding articles that have been selected for this issue, which provide a set of both pragmatic and visionary responses for the role of educational developers in supporting the next …

Wicked²: The Increasing Wickedness Of Educational Developers As Dei Cultural Influencers, Lauri Dietz, China M. Jenkins, Laura Cruz, Amber Handy, Rita Kumar, Rita Kumar, Julia Metzger, Ian Norris

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The global pandemic that began in 2020 amplified the chasm between higher education’s stated goals to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and the systemic realities that many students, instructors, and staff grapple with on a daily basis. We contend that attenuating the barriers to DEI outcomes means first acknowledging that DEI is a wicked problem, in that it is impossible to solve because of competing, conflicting, and complex sociocultural forces from within and outside our institutions. We also contend that educational developers (EDs) are particularly well situated within the higher education ecology to be key cultural influencers in how …

Taking Teaching And Learning Seriously: Approaching Wicked Consciousness Through Collaboration And Partnership, Adam H. Smith, Laurie L. Grupp, Lindsay Doukopoulos, John C. Foo, Barbara J. Rodriguez, Janel Seeley, Linda M. Boland, Laurel L. Hester Apr 2022

Taking Teaching And Learning Seriously: Approaching Wicked Consciousness Through Collaboration And Partnership, Adam H. Smith, Laurie L. Grupp, Lindsay Doukopoulos, John C. Foo, Barbara J. Rodriguez, Janel Seeley, Linda M. Boland, Laurel L. Hester

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has demanded large-scale collaboration within all organizations, including higher education, and taking teaching and learning seriously, in this moment, means leveraging partnerships to address the wicked (large, complex) problems cited by Bass (2020). These problems are not ours alone to solve; rather, we make the case for a “wicked consciousness,” an amalgam of perspectives, in educational development. Guided by intellectual humility, our success as educational developers ought to be measured by the quality of our collaborations as well as our ability to learn with others, form equitable partnerships, and lead others by our example.

Developing Cultural Humility Using Art-Based Group Practices: A Collaborative Autoethnography, Dani De Herrera, Amanda Ramirez, Vivien Chia, Yu Liu, Vanessa Perez, Victoria Mason

LMU Theses and Dissertations

As the state of the world continues to evolve through means of social justice and technology, the discussion of cultural humility as the evolution of cultural competence is a growing topic in the field of mental health and the art therapy community. The following mixed- method research explores the impact of art materials, group processes, and creative practices in the development of cultural humility. Six graduate students from the Marital and Family Art Therapy Program at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) designed the following collaborative ethnography. Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data to answer the question: How can group art-based practices …

Enhancing The Opportunities For Adults With Autism To Find Jobs Using A Job-Matching Algorithm, Joseph T. Bills Apr 2022

Enhancing The Opportunities For Adults With Autism To Find Jobs Using A Job-Matching Algorithm, Joseph T. Bills

Theses and Dissertations

Adults with autism face many difficulties when finding employment, such as struggling with interviews and needing accommodating environments for sensory issues. However, autistic adults also have unique skills to contribute to the workplace that companies have recently started to seek after, such as close attention to detail and trustworthiness. To work around these difficulties and help companies find the talent they are looking for we have developed a job-matching system. Our system is based around the stable matching of the Gale-Shapley algorithm to match autistic adults with employers after estimating how both adults with autism and employers would rank the …

Toys Are For Adults, John Wippler

Theses

This paper explores the concept of toys, what they are and for whom they are made. The paper also provides a brief history of designer toys and pop culture, and how pop culture helped fuel the designer toy industry. The psychology of collecting is also referenced, and a direct correlation is made between the act of collecting toys and toy popularity.

The book I wrote is also mentioned and is a vital part of the purpose for the thesis. The book is an introductory guide to resin toymaking and is integral to the expansion of the designer toy community.

Empires Of Obligation: Law, Money, And Debt Between England And The Ottoman Empire, 1670-1720, Ellen Mary Nye Apr 2022

Empires Of Obligation: Law, Money, And Debt Between England And The Ottoman Empire, 1670-1720, Ellen Mary Nye

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines the relationship between interstate private credit and domestic public finance in early modern England and the Ottoman Empire. During the 1690s, both the English and Ottoman states developed new institutions for longer-term borrowing and reformed their imperial monetary systems. These synchronized but divergent financial developments present a puzzle that has not been answered by rigidly separate English and Ottoman historiographies. Empires of Obligation follows merchants between England and the Ottoman Empire to understand how both states responded differently to the challenges of global trade and fiscal crisis due to alternative arrangements of debt, power, and empire. As …

The Oldest Mineralized Bryozoan? A Possible Palaeostomate In The Lower Cambrian Of Nevada, Usa, Sara B. Pruss, Lexie Leeser, Emily F. Smith, Andrey Yu Zhuravlev, Paul D. Taylor Apr 2022

The Oldest Mineralized Bryozoan? A Possible Palaeostomate In The Lower Cambrian Of Nevada, Usa, Sara B. Pruss, Lexie Leeser, Emily F. Smith, Andrey Yu Zhuravlev, Paul D. Taylor

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

All skeletal marine invertebrate phyla appeared during the Cambrian explosion, except for Bryozoa with mineralized skeletons, which first appear in the Early Ordovician. However, the skeletal diversity of Early Ordovician bryozoans suggests a preceding interval of diversification. We report a possible earliest occurrence of palaeostomate bryozoans in limestones of the Cambrian Age 4 Harkless Formation, western United States. Following recent interpretations of the early Cambrian Protomelission as a soft-bodied bryozoan, our findings add to the evidence of early Cambrian roots for the Bryozoa. The Harkless fossils resemble some esthonioporate and cystoporate bryozoans, showing a radiating pattern of densely packed tubes …

James Monroe Whitfield's "The Vision": Apocalypse And The Black Periodical Press, Magdalena Zapędowska Apr 2022

James Monroe Whitfield's "The Vision": Apocalypse And The Black Periodical Press, Magdalena Zapędowska

English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications

The pessimism of James Monroe Whitfield's long, only partially preserved poem "The Vision" is possibly without parallel in antebellum African American literature. Mobilizing African American and broader American culture's preoccupation with the end of the world, Whitfield turns to allegory and apocalyptic prophecy to represent the massive scale of human sacrifice in a nation founded on enslavement and colonial domination. "The Vision" theorizes the regimes of oppression shaping the antebellum social order through what I term an apocalyptic aesthetic of annihilation, which emerges from the interaction of the poem's thematic, affective, and formal components. This aesthetic is concerned with imminent …

The Right To Remain, Timothy E. Lynch Apr 2022

The Right To Remain, Timothy E. Lynch

Faculty Works

Article 12.4 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) states, "No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of the right to enter his own country." Citizens clearly enjoy Article 12.4 rights, but this article demonstrates that this right reaches beyond the citizenry. Using customary methods of treaty interpretation, including reference to the ICCPR's preparatory works and the jurisprudence of the Human Rights Committee, this article demonstrates that Article 12.4 also forbids States from deporting long-term resident noncitizens both documented and undocumented - except under the rarest circumstances. As a result, the ICCPR right to remain in one's own …

Symptom Cluster Profiles Following Traumatic Orthopaedic Injuries, Stephen Thomas Breazeale Apr 2022

Symptom Cluster Profiles Following Traumatic Orthopaedic Injuries, Stephen Thomas Breazeale

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Traumatic orthopaedic injuries (TOIs), musculoskeletal injuries that result from physical trauma, affect millions of Americans, and cost more than cancer, diabetes, or heart disease annually. Post-injury symptoms of anxiety, depression, pain, sleep disturbance, and stressor-related disorders are common and associated with negative long-term outcomes. Individuals rarely experience a single symptom, but often experience them in clusters of 2 or more co-occurring symptoms. Symptom clusters can be phenotypically characterized by symptom cluster profiles that describe the common ways a group experiences a set of symptoms. Symptom cluster profiles may share biological underpinnings, yet research examining biological underpinnings of symptom cluster profiles …
