Connectomic Profiling And Vagus Nerve Stimulation Outcomes Study (Connectivos): A Prospective Observational Protocol To Identify Biomarkers Of Seizure Response In Children And Youth, Lauren Siegel, Matthew D Smyth, Et Al
Open Access Publications
INTRODUCTION: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a neuromodulation therapy that can reduce the seizure burden of children with medically intractable epilepsy. Despite the widespread use of VNS to treat epilepsy, there are currently no means to preoperatively identify patients who will benefit from treatment. The objective of the present study is to determine clinical and neural network-based correlates of treatment outcome to better identify candidates for VNS therapy.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In this multi-institutional North American study, children undergoing VNS and their caregivers will be prospectively recruited. All patients will have documentation of clinical history, physical and neurological examination and …

“Researcher-As-Instrument” In Qualitative Research: The Complexities Of The Educational Researcher’S Identities, Bogum Yoon Dr., Christine Uliassi
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this study was to reexamine the principle of researcher-as-instrument to provide insights on methodological ways of engaging critically and reflexively. There are few published pieces that have given attention to the complexities of the educational researcher’s identities through the method of critical self-analysis. The researcher’s nine published case studies were critically reanalyzed by using the criteria of excellent qualitative research such as rich rigor to examine the relationship between the researcher’s identities and the quality of qualitative research. The findings suggest that the researcher’s published studies lack sincerity most among other criteria. The layered identities of the …
The Long And Winding Road To Effective Copyright Protection In China, Peter K. Yu
The Long And Winding Road To Effective Copyright Protection In China, Peter K. Yu
Pepperdine Law Review
In November 2020, China adopted the Third Amendment to the Copyright Law, providing a major overhaul of its copyright regime. This Amendment entered into effect on June 1, 2021. The last time the regime was completely revamped was in October 2001, when the Copyright Law was amended two months before China joined the World Trade Organization. While U.S. policymakers and industry groups have had mixed reactions to the recent Amendment, the new law presents an opportunity to take stock of the progress China has made in the copyright reform process. This Article begins by mapping the long and winding road …
Thieves In The Temple: The Scandal Of Copyright Registration And African- American Artists, Kevin J. Greene
Thieves In The Temple: The Scandal Of Copyright Registration And African- American Artists, Kevin J. Greene
Pepperdine Law Review
Copyright registration is the currency of copyright transactions in music, film, and television and is essential for pursuing infringement claims and ownership disputes. Despite copyright registration’s outsized reach across the copyright spectrum and importance to the copyright industries, the U.S. Copyright Office does not verify claims of copyright authorship or ownership. No express mechanism exists to challenge false copyright registrations in the Copyright Office, and the penalties for falsely claiming copyright authorship are paltry in comparison to the potential gains. This Article contends that lax copyright registration standards call into question the legitimacy of the registration system and that the …

How Do Social Media Discourses Shape Gendered Stereotypes Of Women In Entrepreneurship?, Caitlin A. Osei
How Do Social Media Discourses Shape Gendered Stereotypes Of Women In Entrepreneurship?, Caitlin A. Osei
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
This project uses content analysis from ten various Instagram pages from women entrepreneurs. The analysis highlights what linguistic choices women entrepreneurs use in their social media captions. The captions are also classified based on their framing of women entrepreneurship. Recent studies on women entrepreneurship has found that the Meso/Macro environment plays a role in the growth and development of women entrepreneurs. Taking an analytical gaze on these linguistic choices may open a space to understand the gendering stereotypes of women in entrepreneurship. Additionally, may reveal the gender sub-text that exists in the lingustic choices of women entrepreneurs.

Disabled Lives And Pandemic Lives: Stories Of Human Precarity
Disabled Lives And Pandemic Lives: Stories Of Human Precarity
Occasional Paper Series
The idea for Carol Rogers-Shaw’s essay began in April 2020, six weeks into the initial COVID lockdown, at her Zoom-based PhD dissertation defense. Carol’s dissertation brought together a narration of her life as a person with a disability and her work as a high school teacher of students with identified disabilities, conceptualized and reconceptualized through the lens of critical disability studies.

Occasional Paper Series
In this article, I pay particular attention to four concerns that have come to the fore in startling ways for people worldwide during the pandemic. These include building empathy and community through the struggle to manage the fear of death, acceptance of disappointment and frustration, recognition the importance of being in tune with one’s body, and living with chronic grief. Drawing on stories from my life as a teacher and as a person with a disability, I hope to provide readers with both a way to reflect on the ongoing existential and practical concerns raised by the pandemic, and to …

Transforming Creativity Skills Into Creative Habits, Bethlem Clavijo Boronat, Halim Choueiry
Arab Economic and Business Journal
In a constantly changing and uncertain word, the creative capability is a key skill, not only for professional and personal success, but for survival. Educational systems have traditionally treated creativity as a marginal component of educational programs and, when it has been taught, it has been done in the focus of tools and techniques more than on building a solid creative base for students. This paper analyses the situation of the present-day creativity teaching in Higher Education and determines the key capabilities that allow the students to build a solid creative personality. After that, the paper offers a range of …

Beyond Decolonising – Some Thoughts On The Future Of Marketing/Marketing Research In The Gulf/Me/Na Region, Bronwyn P. Wood
Arab Economic and Business Journal
There is much the MENA/Gulf region can teach regarding the ever-narrowing hegemonic perspectives in the literature - from selfhood, agency, empowerment, women, collectivism, intersectionality to consumption and business practice.
This paper focuses, briefly, on several very large areas of scholarship to consider the issues raised and the opportunities uncovered, as they pertain to the region. The article introduces some important particularities of the region, an overview of some relevant areas of potential future study and outlines how we, as academics, can contribute to a positive future for the Arabian Gulf/ME/NA overall.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate if Digṇāga’s commitment that non-observation (adarśanam) of the reason (adarśanam)and property to be proven (sādya) in the dissimilar example (vyatireka dṛṣṭānta) is alone sufficient to ground the exclusion of other referents (anyāpoha), as a valid inference for oneself (svārthānumāna) and proof for others (parārthānumāna). To answer this question, four formal accounts of Digṇāga’s view of the three characteristics (Trairūpya) of inference by Hayes, Katsura, Tillemans, and Oetke were consulted. I argue a formal logical account of …

Say Gay, Miranda Wiener
Student Research Symposium
The HB-1557 bill, deemed the 'Don't Say Gay' Bill by critics, has officially passed in the Florida Senate and will be enacted into law. The law targets discussion in the classroom towards LGBTQ issues and dynamics, eliminating these discussions all together. This bill will eliminate a potential safe space for LGBTQ students and will reinforce the idea that LGBTQ issues are a 'taboo' subject. By only eliminating LGBTQ discussions, the mental and physical health of youth apart of the LGBTQ community will decrease and students who are not apart of the LGBTQ community will lose the opportunity to create an …

Docosahexaenoic Acid May Reduce Risk Factors Of Cancer Development In A Mouse Model Of Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer, Eliza Stewart, Marcus Hayden
Student Research Symposium
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide and has increased incidence in developed countries. There is a close link between CRC and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A main symptom of IBD is colitis, which is inflammation of the colon. Diet plays a key role in the development of CRC, specifically a Western-type diet, which is characterized by energy dense and nutrient deficient foods. This dietary pattern is associated with both increased inflammation and dysbiosis of the gut microbiome, two factors that contribute to the development of CRC. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that …

A central goal of evolutionary genetics is to understand how contingency and constraint shape evolutionary trajectories of protein evolution. There is considerable evidence that the fitness consequences of mutations are dependent on the genetic background in which they occur. This context dependence means that understanding the effects of putatively adaptive mutations as well as the evolutionary history of novel protein function can be difficult. An ideal approach might be a “protein time machine” in which mutations of interest are inserted into ancient ancestral gene sequences and their effects quantified. When multiple mutations are thought to be important, the order of …

Factors That Influence Dietetic Interns' Dietary Practices, Jenna Sacks, Breann Mcfarlane, Courtney Weese, Katie Thompson
Student Research Symposium
Background: The dietetic internship is a rigorous supervised practice experience that all future registered dietitians must complete. Research suggests that environmental and social factors may affect dietary choices. No studies have been done to evaluate if the rigorous internship experience affects interns’ dietary practices. Objective: The objective of this focus group research study was to gather opinions from various dietetic interns to understand what factors of the internship experience, if any, affected interns’ dietary habits and preferences. It was hypothesized that environmental and social factors from the dietetic internship would impact interns’ dietary habits. Design: Qualitative data was collected via …
