Issue In Equity For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students With Complex Support Needs: A Comparative Analysis Of District-Level Student Data, Rosalia Pacheco

Special Education ETDs

Research has shown that English learners with disabilities should have access to both special education and Title III services as required by law (de Valenzuela et al., 2006, 2018, 2016, 2022; de Valenzuela & Copeland, 2018; Kangas, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021). This quantitative study uncovers issues of educational inequities related to: (a) the identification of these students as English learners; (b) their access to Title III services; and (c) the instructional settings in which they are educated for culturally and linguistically diverse students with Autism (ASD), Developmental Delay (DD), Intellectual Disability (ID), Multiple Disabilities (MD), or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). …

Effect Of Micro-Structural Dispersity Of Simo Ductile Iron On High Temperature Performance During Static Oxidation, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Asebi Bofah, Larry A. Godlewski, Mei Li Apr 2022

Effect Of Micro-Structural Dispersity Of Simo Ductile Iron On High Temperature Performance During Static Oxidation, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Asebi Bofah, Larry A. Godlewski, Mei Li

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High silicon and molybdenum (SiMo) ductile iron is commonly used for car exhaust systems, and its micro-structural dispersity depends on intrinsic parameters, which include alloy composition and inoculation efficiency, as well as extrinsic factors, such as casting wall thickness and molding material, which define cooling rate during solidification. Micro-structural dispersity is referred to as the degree of heterogeneity of sizes of structural constituencies within the microstructure. A variation in the micro-structural dispersity could impact the high temperature performance of SiMo ductile iron during static oxidation and transient thermo-mechanical loading conditions. In this study, static high temperature tests were performed on …

In drylands, there is a need for controlled experiments over multiple planting years to examine how woody seedlings respond to soil texture and the potentially interactive effects of soil depth and precipitation. Understanding how multiple environmental factors interactively influence plant establishment is critical to restoration ecology and in this case to broadscale restoration efforts in western U.S. drylands dominated by big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata). We planted sagebrush seedlings across a range of soil textures and depths in the southern portion of the species' range, on the Colorado Plateau, USA. We evaluated survival of repeated plantings of caged and …

Trade Liberalization And The Social Determinants Of Health: A Case Study Of Nafta's Impact On Mexico From 1994 To 2005, Maria Trubetskaya

Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals

Given the increased transnationalization of borders and economic interdependence between countries in the Global North and South, it is imperative to address how these trends impact the health and well being of the populations involved. The conventional neoliberal economic framework, however, falls short in explaining these dynamics due to its overemphasis of proximal determinants of health as direct consequences of commodification and free market activities. In congruence with those theoretical limitations, there is a limited assessment of more distal determinants – the social determinants of health (SDOH) – that are arguably more consequential for health and are interrelated with the …

The Novel Protein Crystallization Chaperone Telsam Stabilizes Weak Crystal Contacts, Accelerates Crystallization Of Fused Target Proteins, And Solves The Crystallographic Phase Problem, Supeshala Dilrukshi Sarath Nawarathnage

Theses and Dissertations

We studied the usefulness of genetic fusion to TELSAM polymers as an effective protein crystallization strategy. We observed novel properties in crystals of two TELSAM-target protein fusions. TELSAM as a crystallization chaperone shows rapid crystallization when it's fused to target proteins and possibly with a greater propensity. Some TELSAM-target fusions crystallized more rapidly than the same target protein alone. TELSAM-target proteins can be crystallized at relatively low protein concentrations such as 0.1 mg/mL. TELSAM requires no TELSAM polymers touching one another in the crystal lattice in order to form well-diffracting crystals. This lack of crystal contacts has not been observed …

A simplified Chinese version of the DES was developed and tested using 34 Chinese undergraduate (second year) nursing students. They participated in six simulation scenarios and debriefings. Eight experts were consulted to determine the content validity of the scale. Critical ratio method, Cronbach’s alpha, intraclass correlation coefficient, correlation …

The Effects Of Various Inlet Distortion Profiles On Transonic Fan Performance, Andrew Michael Bedke Apr 2022

The Effects Of Various Inlet Distortion Profiles On Transonic Fan Performance, Andrew Michael Bedke

Theses and Dissertations

An increased understanding of how inlet flow distortion affects transonic fans enables improved fan design and performance prediction. Inlet distortion refers to non-uniformities in the incoming flow properties. Complex inlet ducts in high performance aircraft result in distorted flow at the fan inlet. In this thesis, two studies were performed using Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (URANS) simulations. The first study focused on understanding how the transition abruptness between the clean and distorted sector in the inlet Pt profile as well as the circumferential extent of the distorted sector affect distortion transfer and generation through a transonic fan. Simulations on two …

The Effects Of Dialogic Reading On The Oral Language Ofâ Diverse Kindergarten Students, Abigail Figgins Apr 2022

The Effects Of Dialogic Reading On The Oral Language Ofâ Diverse Kindergarten Students, Abigail Figgins

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if dialogic reading involving diverse kindergarten students would significantly affect narrative language. Various studies have corroborated the effectiveness of dialogic reading instruction on the expressive vocabulary of monolingual children. However, few studies have examined oral narrative language outcomes, especially with diverse students. A total of 142 kindergarten students were randomly assigned to a treatment group or control group. Each child in the treatment group received 14 weeks of whole-class dialogic reading instruction from their kindergarten teacher two times per week for 20 minutes each session in their classroom. The dialogic reading program …

Closing The Loop: Automatically Identifying Abnormal Imaging Results In Scanned Documents, Akshat Kumar, Heath Goodrum, Ashley Kim, Carly Stender, Kirk Roberts, Elmer V Bernstam

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVES: Scanned documents (SDs), while common in electronic health records and potentially rich in clinically relevant information, rarely fit well with clinician workflow. Here, we identify scanned imaging reports requiring follow-up with high recall and practically useful precision.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: We focused on identifying imaging findings for 3 common causes of malpractice claims: (1) potentially malignant breast (mammography) and (2) lung (chest computed tomography [CT]) lesions and (3) long-bone fracture (X-ray) reports. We train our ClinicalBERT-based pipeline on existing typed/dictated reports classified manually or using ICD-10 codes, evaluate using a test set of manually classified SDs, and compare against …

The findings indicated that the desire to know the required material and experience self fulfillment of succeeding …

Ibn Al-Jawzī’S Critique Of Sufism In Talbīs Iblīs: A Re-Examination, Pascal Held Apr 2022

Ibn Al-Jawzī’S Critique Of Sufism In Talbīs Iblīs: A Re-Examination, Pascal Held

Faculty Journal Articles

This study seeks to re-examine Ibn al-Jawzī’s (d. 597/1201) censure of Sufism in his Talbīs Iblīs, a widely-known and frequently cited, but rarely carefully considered work. The article finds that Talbīs Iblīs’ chapter devoted to Sufism does indeed constitute a scathing condemnation of the Sufi tradition, which is however by no means comprehensive and requires moreover certain specifications and clarifications. For example, is Ibn al-Jawzī’s criticism mostly limited to Sufi conduct and practice, especially in public, rather than their ideas and beliefs, and likewise does he use his criticism to highlight commendable forms of piety and mysticism, revealing that he …

The Problem

I recently asked some of my fellow poets what the purpose of poetry is to them. The consensus? Sharing experience and meaning with the reader. But what is the point of sharing these ideas if there is no one with whom to share? Poetry readers are dwindling in numbers for two main reasons: the first being that most people believe poetry to be elitist because they have only read poetry from the periods where this was true; the second reason is that “poetry” is widely available to the common person in the form of music. The form I …

Reading As Resistance: Representations Of Indigeneity In Twentieth Century American Children’S Literature, Isabel Evans Apr 2022

Reading As Resistance: Representations Of Indigeneity In Twentieth Century American Children’S Literature, Isabel Evans

2022 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

My research investigates representations of Indigeneity in twentieth century American children’s literature. As part of my methodology, I examined children’s books that include Indigenous characters or iconography, like feather headdresses or moccasins, coded as “Indian” in the dominant American imagination. This enabled me to interrogate hegemonic understandings of the “Indian” among non-Native people in the United States, who, until mid-century, saw Indigenous peoples, paradoxically, as both non-human threats to American progress and as the “first Americans.” These assumptions permeated popular children’s books like Two Little Savages (1903) and Little Leo (1951), which both present the “Indian” as an identity that …

Still On Patrol: An Argument For Greater Protections For Sunken American State Vessels In International And Foreign Coastal Waters, Sarah Elizabeth Catterson

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Quint, the surly captain from Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, is perhaps most famous for his soliloquy recounting the Indianapolis tragedy. The Indy, as she was called, sunk just under fifteen minutes after being hit by Japanese torpedoes in 1945 following her delivery of the components for the Hiroshima atomic bomb to the Pacific island of Tinian. It took the Navy five days to realize she was missing, by which point 600 of the 800 survivors had died from exposure or shark attacks. The Indy remained missing until she was found seventy-two years later by the Petrel, a …

The (Unnoticed) Revitalization Of The Doctrine Of Equivalents, Daryl Lim Apr 2022

The (Unnoticed) Revitalization Of The Doctrine Of Equivalents, Daryl Lim

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Over the past century, few patent issues have been considered so often by the Supreme Court of the United States as the doctrine of equivalents (“DOE”). This judge-made rule deals with a question that lies at the heart of patent policy—what is the best way to define property rights in an invention? The doctrine gives patentees an opportunity to ensnare an accused device that does not literally infringe a patent claim if the accused device is substantially similar to each claim limitation. Patentees enjoy this advantage, but it comes at a cost to the public, who must face the …
