Tiktok: A New Source Of Labor, Max Oxendine May 2022

Tiktok: A New Source Of Labor, Max Oxendine

Comm-entary

In my research paper TikTok as a new source of labor is elaborated upon. The social media platform that originated in 2016 allows you to watch or create videos anywhere from 15 seconds to 3 minutes long. Some content that can be seen or made on TikTok tends to be videos that are entertaining, informative, or in most cases the newest dance trend. In my research paper I wanted to dive deeper into if this new popular app could be a reliable source of labor? Becoming a paid social media influencer does not occur overnight and success is not just …

Roles Of Small Rnas And Paralogous Proteins In Bacillus Anthracis Virulence Gene Regulation, Ileana Corsi May 2022

Roles Of Small Rnas And Paralogous Proteins In Bacillus Anthracis Virulence Gene Regulation, Ileana Corsi

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Bacteria have evolved a myriad of regulatory mechanisms to control gene expression. One of the most common mechanisms is post-transcriptional control through the function of small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs). Small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) are short transcripts that base-pair to mRNA targets or interact with regulatory proteins. sRNA function has been studied extensively in Gram-negative bacteria; comparatively less is known about sRNAs in Firmicutes. In this dissertation, I investigated two sRNAs encoded within the virulence plasmid pXO1 of Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax. The sRNAs, named “XrrA and XrrB” (for pXO1-encoded regulatory RNA) are abundant and highly stable …

Investigating The Attitudes Of The D/Deaf Community To Wards Genetic Counseling And The Utilization Of Genetic Services, Katie Baudoin, Jennifer Czerwinski, Laura Farach, Malorie Jones, Rebecca Lunstroth, Caitlin Mauer, Chelsea Wagner May 2022

Investigating The Attitudes Of The D/Deaf Community To Wards Genetic Counseling And The Utilization Of Genetic Services, Katie Baudoin, Jennifer Czerwinski, Laura Farach, Malorie Jones, Rebecca Lunstroth, Caitlin Mauer, Chelsea Wagner

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The Deaf community has previously expressed concerns about the process of genetic counseling/testing and the potential implications it can have for Deaf individuals. Prior studies have explored the motivations of Deaf individuals for pursuing genetic testing related to deafness; however, information regarding the interest and motivations for indications other than deafness is limited. Our study aims to characterize attitudes of individuals within the d/Deaf community towards genetic counseling and testing and to assess interest and motivations to seek genetic counseling for indications other than deafness.

Individuals were recruited through local and national d/Deaf organizations to participate in an anonymous, online …

Invisible Disabilities, Academic Capital And Competitiveness Of Genetic Counseling Applicants, Natalie E. Stoner, Meagan Choates, Carla Mcgruder, Debra Murray, Theresa Wittman, Sara Wofford, Claire N. Singletary May 2022

Invisible Disabilities, Academic Capital And Competitiveness Of Genetic Counseling Applicants, Natalie E. Stoner, Meagan Choates, Carla Mcgruder, Debra Murray, Theresa Wittman, Sara Wofford, Claire N. Singletary

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The field of genetic counseling has historically lacked diversity. Recent research has begun to explore how visible diversity may present barriers to a genetic counseling applicant becoming competitive, but has not yet characterized potential barriers with invisible diversities, such as being a first-generation college student, or a part of the LBGTQ+ community. Therefore, this study aimed to address this gap among those with invisible diversities, as well as explore their academic capital (AC), a theoretical framework used to identify factors that make students more likely to succeed in post-secondary work including supportive networks, trustworthy information, family uplift, college knowledge, overcoming …

Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening (Nips) Testing Motivations And Informed Decision Making In The Low-Risk Population, Jenna Lea May 2022

Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening (Nips) Testing Motivations And Informed Decision Making In The Low-Risk Population, Jenna Lea

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening (NIPS) provides a risk assessment for aneuploidies by utilizing cell-free DNA (cfDNA). Recently, it was recommended that NIPS be offered to all pregnant people regardless of a priori risk for aneuploidy. In the absence of an increased risk, alternative motives for electing NIPS, such as for fetal sex disclosure, may arise and result in a less informed decision about proceeding with NIPS. Therefore, our study aimed to characterize low-risk patients’ motivations for NIPS election, compare motivations between informed and uninformed decision makers, and determine whether electing NIPS for fetal sex disclosure had any bearing on informed decision …

Improved understanding of genetic regulation of the proteome can facilitate identification of the causal mechanisms for complex traits. We analyzed data on 4,657 plasma proteins from 7,213 European American (EA) and 1,871 African American (AA) individuals from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, and further replicated findings on 467 AA individuals from the African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension study. Here, we identified 2,004 proteins in EA and 1,618 in AA, with most overlapping, which showed associations with common variants in cis-regions. Availability of AA samples led to smaller credible sets and notable number of population-specific cis-protein quantitative …

We assembled an ancestrally diverse collection of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in 180,834 affected individuals and 1,159,055 controls (48.9% non-European descent) through the Diabetes Meta-Analysis of Trans-Ethnic association studies (DIAMANTE) Consortium. Multi-ancestry GWAS meta-analysis identified 237 loci attaining stringent genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10-9), which were delineated to 338 distinct association signals. Fine-mapping of these signals was enhanced by the increased sample size and expanded population diversity of the multi-ancestry meta-analysis, which localized 54.4% of T2D associations to a single variant with >50% posterior probability. This improved fine-mapping enabled systematic assessment of candidate causal genes and molecular mechanisms through which T2D associations are mediated, laying the foundations for functional investigations. Multi-ancestry genetic risk scores enhanced transferability of T2D prediction across diverse populations. Our study provides a step toward more effective clinical translation of T2D GWAS …

Dominican students have the lowest performance scores in science, math, and reading comprehension compared to students across the region, according to national (Minerd, 2018) and International evaluations (TERCE, 2014). While many factors are linked to these results, teacher performance is considered an essential element (OECD, 2015) that needs to be addressed.

Ecologies Of (Domestic) Trauma, Ecologies Of (Domestic) Violence: A Rhetorical Procession Toward Mourning, Charlotte E. Lucke

All Dissertations

In this dissertation, I posit that intimate partner violence is entrenched in an often-overlooked historical and rhetorical legacy of patriarchal cultural, structural, and direct violences. Many scholars in and outside of rhetorical studies have analyzed and critiqued public representations of trauma and violence, including intimate partner violence. Joining this conversation, I focus on the limitations in the ways influential rhetorical domains both represent and respond to people who abuse their intimate partners. Often, mass media represents people who abuse their intimate partners as individuals void of contexts. Similarly, the criminal justice system holds individuals responsible through law enforcement and incarceration. …

Digitalization Of Construction Project Requirements Using Natural Language Processing (Nlp) Techniques, Fahad Ul Hassan May 2022

Digitalization Of Construction Project Requirements Using Natural Language Processing (Nlp) Techniques, Fahad Ul Hassan

All Dissertations

Contract documents are a critical legal component of a construction project that specify all wishes and expectations of the owner toward the design, construction, and handover of a project. A single contract package, especially of a design-build (DB) project, comprises hundreds of documents including thousands of requirements. Precise comprehension and management of the requirements are critical to ensure that all important explicit and implicit requirements of the project scope are captured, managed, and completed. Since requirements are mainly written in a natural human language, the current manual methods impose a significant burden on practitioners to process and restructure them into …

Examining Intergenerational Relationships In The Family, Abigail Stephan May 2022

Examining Intergenerational Relationships In The Family, Abigail Stephan

All Dissertations

Intergenerational relationships are partnerships between individuals from different generations, often marked by respect, shared responsibility, reciprocity, and resilience. Within the context of families, intergenerational relationships provide a natural space for learning and development across the lifespan, especially for those belonging to non-adjacent generations. Although it has been clearly established that non-adjacent intergenerational relationships in the family context can be mutually influential, less is known about how individuals enter into these interactions and view their role as active partners, how the social and cognitive processes within the intergenerational relationship shape outcomes, and how experiences in these relationships during childhood inform perspectives, …

Examining The Impact Of Design Features Of Electronic Health Records Patient Portals On The Usability And Information Communication For Shared Decision Making, Rong Yin

All Dissertations

The use of the Electronic Health Records (EHR) patient portal has been shown to be effective in generating positive outcomes in patients’ healthcare, improving patient engagement and patient-provider communication. Government legislation also required proof of its meaningful use among patients by healthcare providers. Typical patient portals also include features such as health information and patient education materials. However, little research has examined the specific use of patient portals related to individuals with specific diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). IBDs are life-long, not curable, chronic diseases that can impact the whole population. Individuals with IBDs may have higher needs …

How Transformative Leaders Break Down Barriers To Increase Access To Arts Integration For Black And Hispanic Students: A Multiple Case Study, Julia Mcclanahan

All Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand how transformative leaders break down barriers to increase access to arts integration for Black and Hispanic students. To fulfill this purpose, I conducted a multiple case study of two school sites in two different school districts. I collected the data for the cases through interviews with the principal of each school, interviews with two teachers from each site, field notes from site visits, and documents and artifacts from each site. This study is significant because the data provides transformative leaders with an action plan in order to make arts-integrated programs more equitable …

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

An 11-year-old male with Marfan's syndrome and aortic root dilatation underwent an uneventful Bentall procedure to replace his aortic root and valve. Five months later, surveillance echocardiogram revealed a slowly enlarging pseudoaneurysm arising from the ascending aorta. This finding was subsequently confirmed by computed tomographic angiogram. The patient had successful open surgical repair and paraaortic hematoma evacuation.

Moderating From Nowhere, Gilad Abiri May 2022

Moderating From Nowhere, Gilad Abiri

BYU Law Review

We are living in the midst of a battle over online hate speech regulation, and the stakes could not be higher. Hate speech not only harms its intended victims, be they individuals or groups, but it also polarizes and divides society in ways that undermine the health of democratic regimes. While there is widespread agreement that the current situation of online discourse is untenable, scholars and policymakers are deeply divided on the best way to improve it.

Until recently, American free speech norms have dominated the content moderation policies of digital media platforms. First Amendment norms are extremely resistant to …

Redefining The Boundary Between Appropriation And Regulation, Jessica L. Asbridge May 2022

Redefining The Boundary Between Appropriation And Regulation, Jessica L. Asbridge

BYU Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court distinguishes between appropriations and regulations of property rights when interpreting the Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause. While appropriations of any kind require just compensation to survive constitutional scrutiny, whether non-appropriative laws regulating property rights require compensation is determined on an ad hoc basis, guided by concerns of fairness and justness. In Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid, the Court reaffirmed its prior precedent establishing the physical takings doctrine, providing that an appropriation is any government action that results in a physical invasion of an owner’s real property and a taking of the owner’s right to exclude. The Court …

Addressing The Next State Fiscal Crisis: Toward An Ex Ante Scheme Of Federal Assistance To States In Fiscal Distress, Omer Kimhi

BYU Law Review

Every several years, usually after a national recession, and also as a result of the C OVID 19 pandemic, states enter financial difficulties. These difficulties spur a debate, both in the political arena and in the academic literature, concerning the appropriate federal response. Some advocate for federal bailouts to rescue the distressed states, while others argue that the states need to deal with their troubles independently or with the help of state bankruptcy legislation. The Article explores the proper federal response to states’ fiscal fiscal crises.

The Article argues that the current (suggested) responses – state bankruptcy and ex-post discretionary …

How To Do Things With Magic: Yeat's Incantatory Performatives, Zoe E. Grout May 2022

How To Do Things With Magic: Yeat's Incantatory Performatives, Zoe E. Grout

English Honors Theses

It is a generally accepted truth that W.B. Yeats viewed his poetry as a part of his magical practice. His occult involvements are well-documented--he was a known member of the Theosophists, as well as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Yeats's written work also made this connection abundantly clear through essays, autobiographies, poems, and especially his metaphysical discourse, A Vision. However, Yeats scholars have done little more than accept this fact; that is, they have not analyzed how exactly Yeats viewed his poetry as incantation, or the possible mechanisms by which this relationship functions. Hence, I hope to fill …

Nonprofits As Socially Responsible Actors: Neoliberalism, Institutional Structures, And Empowerment In The United Nations Global Compact, Alwyn Lim May 2022

Nonprofits As Socially Responsible Actors: Neoliberalism, Institutional Structures, And Empowerment In The United Nations Global Compact, Alwyn Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations have become prominent participants in a global organizational responsibility movement. This trend of nonprofit responsibility is puzzling because nonprofits are presumably already dedicated to the pursuit of collective well-being objectives. This article examines the nonprofit responsibility movement from a cultural perspective, whereby broader cultural changes at the level of international organizations have constructed nonprofit entities as empowered and socially responsible actors. Using the case of the United Nations Global Compact, a global framework for corporate social responsibility, the author shows how (1) the construction of cultural meanings of autonomy and decentralization in the neoliberal context, (2) …

Finding communication strategies that effectively motivate social distancing continues to be a global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-country, preregistered experiment (n = 25,718 from 89 countries) tested hypotheses concerning generalizable positive and negative outcomes of social distancing messages that promoted personal agency and reflective choices (i.e., an autonomy-supportive message) or were restrictive and shaming (i.e., a controlling message) compared with no message at all. We hope this information will provide NPs with evidence-based strategies to help their patients be better prepared to navigate the cold and flu aisle.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Operatic Mysticisms: Mountains, Deserts, Waterscapes examines the ways we encounter environments as readers/viewers of operas, literature, film, and sound recordings, and how each medium requires different detail-gathering techniques. Respective to the previously mentioned mediums, Sun & Sea (2017), Mount Analogue (1952), El Mar La Mar (2017), and Energy Field (2010) are analyzed by engaging with environmental media studies and invention. Reflecting the nature of each landscape—summits of mountains, aporias of deserts, and mysteries of waterscapes—an elemental approach is taken in investigating how these spaces may be noticed, internalized, recorded, and traversed by both the artist and viewer. …
