The Manchu Queue: A Complex Symbol In Chinese Identity, Alexander Jesus Serrano
The Manchu Queue: A Complex Symbol In Chinese Identity, Alexander Jesus Serrano
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The queue hairstyle that was enforced on all Chinese men for over 260 years in China was, in fact, not a Chinese hairstyle. It can be traced to the Jurchen tribes north of the Great Wall and became a complex political and cultural symbol under the Manchu Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The queue signified many things to different people at different times from its 1645 widespread implementation to its sudden disappearance following the revolution of 1911. It is in this ambiguity that the queue provides a rich analytical window through which curious minds can observe sentiments of Ming loyalism, bodily modification, …
Perception Of Parentification: A Qualitative Study Of Hispanic Families In Southern California, Kaylin Lopez
Perception Of Parentification: A Qualitative Study Of Hispanic Families In Southern California, Kaylin Lopez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Previous research has not thoroughly studied parentification in California. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how is child parentification is perceived among Hispanic families in the High Desert region of California. Guided by the premises of Bowlby’s Attachment Theory and Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Theory and utilizing a qualitative approach, this study conducted semi-structured interviews with six Hispanic Americans residing in California’s High Desert area (N = 6). Thematic analysis of the data generated six major themes: (1) children as a resource in the household, (2) parentification requires parental consent, (3) parentification depends on child’s age, (4) parentification …

Flora's Fourth Child: Race, Gender, And Botany In The British Colonial Caribbean, Brittany L. Mondragon
Flora's Fourth Child: Race, Gender, And Botany In The British Colonial Caribbean, Brittany L. Mondragon
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In 1824, an enslaved woman named Catalina (alias Susannah Mathison) induced an abortion by drinking an herbal mixture on the Castle Wemyss Estate in Jamaica. Consequently, the estate’s attorney denounced her as an African witchcraft practitioner. Many enslaved women faced similar convictions for their botanical knowledge as British colonists misinterpreted Obeah for witchcraft or superstition. This thesis sheds light on these women’s experiences and examines how the British Empire imposed imperial rule over enslaved women by reflecting on the intersectionality of race, gender, and botany. Focusing on the Greater Caribbean area and centering primarily around Jamaica, this research explores the …

Problematic Advocacy And Victorian Public Health In Gatherings From Graveyards By Dr. George A. Walker, Olivia Ladner
Problematic Advocacy And Victorian Public Health In Gatherings From Graveyards By Dr. George A. Walker, Olivia Ladner
Honors Theses
This thesis focuses on the problematic advocacy of Dr. George A. Walker in his public health pamphlet, Gatherings from Graveyards. In his work, Walker calls for the removal of urban cemeteries from within London and other cities in Great Britain due to concerns about public health safety. He cites miasmatic theory as the reason for the spread of disease from rotting corpses and unkept cemeteries in the British metropolis. Though he blames Parliament for the state of urban cemeteries, he continuously cites poor communities and neighborhoods as the sole sources of disease and does not conduct investigations into the …
Left Out And Left Behind: Exploring The Well-Being Costs Of Leftist Ideology, Liam Luckett
Left Out And Left Behind: Exploring The Well-Being Costs Of Leftist Ideology, Liam Luckett
Honors Theses
Many studies have empirically explored the relationship between political ideology and psychological well-being. Less look at political ideologies which fall outside of the categories of liberalism and conservativism, such as the case in question for this study, leftism. In the present paper, I carry out a cross-sectional study of candidate risk factors on well-being associated with espoused leftist ideological views, including locus of control and experiences of workplace alienation. I drew from both psychological theory on political ideology and well-being and elements of Marxist theory to generate predictions and explain the interaction of variables and potential personal costs to leftism. …
Food Insecurity Among Students In Alabama's Black Belt, Brandon Craig Renfroe
Food Insecurity Among Students In Alabama's Black Belt, Brandon Craig Renfroe
College of Education
Food insecurity is a multifaceted problem. Though it involves lack of access to sufficient nutrition for an active, healthy life, it frequently portends more. Food insecurity negatively impacts academic performance, mental and physical health, and social/emotional well-being. It is particularly detrimental for rural adolescent students, who experience food insecurity at higher rates than their urban and suburban peers. Especially is this true for minority students, whose food insecurity rates are more than twice the national average. In the Black Belt region of Alabama, levels of food insecurity among high school adolescents, as perceived by those adolescents ( as opposed to …

Interested schools and non-profit organizations may apply for this grant to fund outdoor classroom projects that will help transform their properties into outdoor learning environments.
One requirement for the application is to submit a site plan for the proposed outdoor classroom space. However, many interested applicants have little to no experience with landscape design and may struggle knowing how …
The End Of The Known World, Madeline Thomas
The End Of The Known World, Madeline Thomas
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This thesis forms the foundation for a poetry chapbook infused with Norse mythology and pain. It builds itself on two distinct strands. In the first, I reclaim the story of Hel, goddess of death, and attempt to humanize a figure historically branded as monstrous. Her life forms a narrative line through the collection that attempts to capture the whimsy and horror in myth. Intertwined with the goddess are poems centered around a contemporary speaker who suffers from chronic migraine, an autoimmune disease, unexplained tachycardia, and OCD. The poems in this personal strand vary heavily in both form and content but …

Strategies For Protection Of The Blood Brain Barrier In Rodent Models Of Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Derek Sunil Nowrangi
Strategies For Protection Of The Blood Brain Barrier In Rodent Models Of Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Derek Sunil Nowrangi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating disease that causes a cascade of both mechanical and molecular injury to the central nervous system. It is a debilitating disease that has no well-established treatments, thus leaving an important area to study the pathophysiology of the disease so that new clinically translatable treatments can be found. In the development of translational treatments in experimental ICH, several challenges exist including the designing of studies, method to deliver drugs, proper dosages, and development of models. In our exploration to establish new therapies for ICH, we studied several methods and models that may help to develop …

An Investigation Of The Anti-Stemness Actions Of Two Mirnas After Their Induction By Aminoflavone In Luminal A Breast Cancer, Nicole Ursula Rumbidzai Mavingire
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Approximately 40% of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer (BC) patients develop resistance to endocrine therapy (ET) agents like tamoxifen (Tam). Resistance promotes metastasis, recurrence, and death since metastatic BC is often incurable. Breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) greatly contribute to disease progression and drug resistance. We previously showed that aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonist aminoflavone (AF) inhibits the expression of CSC biomarker α6-integrin (ITGA6) to disrupt the formation of endocrine-sensitive and -resistant luminal A mammospheres. In this study, we performed miRNAsequencing analysis of luminal A MCF-7 and MCF-7TamR mammospheres before and after AF treatment to further develop the mechanism of …
Phytochemical And Synthetic Ahr Ligands As Novel Therapy For Refractory Breast Cancer, Jonathan V. Wooten
Phytochemical And Synthetic Ahr Ligands As Novel Therapy For Refractory Breast Cancer, Jonathan V. Wooten
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) possess tumors that lack estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human growth factor receptor 2 expression. Such patients have lower survival rates than those diagnosed with other breast cancer subtypes in part, due to the scarcity of targeted therapy for TNBC. In addition to chemotherapy, patients with TNBC often consume natural remedies, which has led us and others to evaluate the ability of plant isolates to confer anticancer and chemopreventive actions. Poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) is an enzyme that promotes DNA single-strand break repair. PARP inhibitor olaparib exploits DNA repair enzyme deficiency in tumors to …

Whether They Return: Modeling Outdoor Recreation Behaviors, Decision-Making, And Intention-To-Return In Congressionally Designated Wilderness, Alexander Robert Caraynoff
Master's Theses and Capstones
Visitation to parks and protected areas (PPAs) has become increasingly widespread in the United States. This increased visitation is especially concerning within congressionally designated wilderness areas where federal agencies are dually tasked with preserving wilderness character while simultaneously providing high-quality outdoor recreation experiences. This study investigated the influence of social, situational, and ecological factors on outdoor recreation visitor behaviors and decision-making within the Lye Brook Wilderness (LBW) area in Vermont, USA. An on-site intercept survey (n=576) was employed to collect data from LBW visitors in the summer of 2021. Multi-variate statistics (e.g., binary logistic regression, structural equation modeling) indicate visitor …
Rna-Seq Analysis Of Transgenic Arabidopsis Thaliana With Conferred Overproduction Of Putrescene By A Mouse Ornithine Decarboxylase Gene, Eric English
Master's Theses and Capstones
Polyamines are a class of low molecular weight, nitrogenous bases that participate in many important functions in plants, from germination to senescence and many steps in between. These molecules have been shown to play key roles in various abiotic and biotic stress responses which makes their biosynthetic pathway a focal point for engineering plants to better adapt to rapidly changing local environments and global climate change. Previous work with plants capable of producing high polyamine titers shows that they have superior stress responses as compared to their wild type counterparts. This study investigated what broader impacts a genetic manipulations to …

Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, populations have been declining steadily over the past several decades across the North American east coast. Great Bay Estuary (GBE), located in New Hampshire, is experiencing this loss and restoration efforts have been put into effect. This work addresses restoration needs by characterizing abundances of settled spat and two early stages of C. virginica, D-hinge and veliger, in GBE from June 2020 through November 2020. Abundances are compared based on the collection site and the physicochemical data recorded on each sampling date. It was found that there were no differences in larval abundance at different sites …
The Impact Of Hurricanes On The Acoustic Detection Of Cetaceans, Aditi Tripathy
The Impact Of Hurricanes On The Acoustic Detection Of Cetaceans, Aditi Tripathy
Master's Theses and Capstones
Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is valuable for understanding the presence, behavior, distribution, and population density of marine mammals. While long-term variability of ambient sound is typically evaluated, the impact of short-term variability due to episodic events has not been assessed until now. Hurricanes Dorian (Category 5; 2019), Florence (Category 4; 2018), and Humberto (Category 3; 2019) impacted the soundscape as observed from the passive acoustic data at the Atlantic Deepwater Ecosystem Observatory Network (ADEON) locations in the US Mid- and South Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf. Hurricanes are increasingly prevalent in the North Atlantic and increase the ambient sound level at …
Doing Gender With Ink: The Social Construction And Performance Of Gender As A Tattooed Person, Meghan Rose Lewis
Doing Gender With Ink: The Social Construction And Performance Of Gender As A Tattooed Person, Meghan Rose Lewis
Master's Theses and Capstones
Previous research surrounding tattoos and gender has shown that cismen and ciswomen’s tattoos often differ in size, placement, and design, but little research has investigated why these differences persist. Furthermore, studies on tattoos and gender remain limited in scope as they mainly focus on the lived experiences of cisgender men and women. The current study seeks to expand previous research by including a more gender-diverse sample to investigate how the social construction of masculine and feminine tattoos occur, and how participants across the gender spectrum perform gender through tattoos. For this study, I conducted 20 semi-structured in-depth qualitative interviews with …
Error Detection And Correction During Object Naming In Individuals With Aphasia, Anne O'Donnell
Error Detection And Correction During Object Naming In Individuals With Aphasia, Anne O'Donnell
Master's Theses and Capstones
Aphasia is a neurogenic communication disorder that occurs following a left hemisphere stroke and commonly co-occurs with apraxia of speech (AOS). Individuals with aphasia typically make errors in their lexical retrieval and have difficulties detecting and correcting them. While there is ample research in how errors occur, few researchers go as far as to look at error detection and subsequent correction in this population. Given this need for research, we took a pre-existing data set of 23 individuals with aphasia grouped for presence of AOS (nine with comorbid AOS) and coded their spoken responses on the Object Naming subtest of …
Make Some Sense Of Scent Trademarks: The United States Needs A Graphical Representation Requirement, Gabrielle E. Brill
Make Some Sense Of Scent Trademarks: The United States Needs A Graphical Representation Requirement, Gabrielle E. Brill
University of Richmond Law Review
When it comes to consumer loyalty, some businesses have decided to go beyond attracting the eyes. Why not keep customers via their nostrils? Accordingly, the scent marketing industry is booming. Jennifer Dublino, Vice President of Development at ScentWorld Events, remarks that “smell is one of the most unique of human senses. Scent enters the limbic system [of the brain] and bypasses all of the cognitive and logical thought processes and goes directly to the emotional and memory areas of the brain.” Companies like ScentAir have been created specifically to help stores design fragrances that best fit their image and objectives …
Pandemic-Related Caregiver Burden Among Public Health Workforce: A Mixed-Method Analysis, Tony Lee
Pandemic-Related Caregiver Burden Among Public Health Workforce: A Mixed-Method Analysis, Tony Lee
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by a highly contagious novel virus called SARS-CoV-2, has led to significant global morbidity and mortality. The healthcare workforce (HCW) is disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and is more likely to report depression, burnout, moral injury, compassion fatigue, and post-traumatic stress. However, research among the public health workforce (PHW) remains limited. Given the burden of COVID-19 itself, coupled with the work-related pressure of rapid pandemic management strategies, risk of exposure, potential fatigue, etc., understanding the mental health needs of PHW and related professionals is critical. As such, the purpose of this study is to …

Fertility, Immigration, And Public Support For Parenting, Eleanor Brown, Naomi Cahn, June Carbone
Fertility, Immigration, And Public Support For Parenting, Eleanor Brown, Naomi Cahn, June Carbone
Fordham Law Review
As this Essay shows, the fertility discourse of the last half century deals with the profound effects that come from the transformation of the economy and the place of modern families within it. Discussions of race and class have been an important—and, often, pernicious—part of a transformation in family values, as the upper-middle-class efforts to channel ever greater investment into children have increased economic inequality and contributed to racial, ideological, and gender division. We see the convergence in fertility rates as an indication that, at a practical level, a much larger part of the country is embracing the new family …
