Community Health Worker Intervention To Improve Hba1c In Adult Diabetic Patients, Megan Wojtko
Community Health Worker Intervention To Improve Hba1c In Adult Diabetic Patients, Megan Wojtko
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a disease that disproportionally impacts patients with multiple socioeconomic barriers that are often difficult to address during a primary care visit. Several provider and practice-level barriers also exist including time limitations within the visit and lack of trained staff to help with patient education and case management. Uncontrolled T2DM leads to poor health outcomes and increased healthcare costs. Community Health Workers (CHW) are trained lay persons that can successfully address the patient’s unmet needs and assist with the provider’s recommendations. The purpose of this project was to explore if a CHW led intervention focused …

Improving Knowledge Of Parents Of Hispanic Culture On Emotional Trauma And Abuse Towards Children, Marisol Ramos
Improving Knowledge Of Parents Of Hispanic Culture On Emotional Trauma And Abuse Towards Children, Marisol Ramos
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Some Hispanic/Latinx parents or caregivers raise their children in similar modalities of how they were raised, which, in the culture of the United States may include negative components that could lead to emotional abuse and trauma.
To address parents and/or caregivers' lack of knowledge to reduce those parenting practices that can contribute to emotional trauma and increase those practices that can improve well-being, I have created a one-day workshop curriculum for parents attending the Monterey County Department of Social Services weekly parent meetings in Salinas, California.
Household Composition And Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake And Purchases Among Low Wage Workers, Salma Gudaf
Household Composition And Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake And Purchases Among Low Wage Workers, Salma Gudaf
Honors Scholar Theses
Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are linked to preventable chronic health conditions that low-income individuals are susceptible to. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that American adults consume 145 daily calories from SSBs even though the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends 100-150 total calories of added sugar per day. The present study investigated SSB intake and purchases from a cohort of low-wage workers (N = 434) in different household (HH) types. HH composition was designated as “Households with children,” and “Households without children,” based on self-report. SSB consumption was measured on a 3-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), summed, and …
Plague And Devastation In Ancient Greece: Why Mourning Matters, Hannah Kallin
Plague And Devastation In Ancient Greece: Why Mourning Matters, Hannah Kallin
Honors Scholar Theses
In 430 BC, The Plague of Athens swept through the city and left tens of thousands dead. Ancient historian Thucydides gives his account of the plague, detailing the consequent breakdown of order in the capital. Bodies could not be buried or mourned in the ideal traditional ceremonies, leaving surviving citizens unmoored and terrified. This paper explores the impact of interrupted mourning on ancient Greek society. These interruptions range from war and changing laws to periods of plague and widespread devastation. The emotional wellbeing of individual citizens depends on their ability to process death and associated grief with freedom and support …
Plant-Based Diets And Metabolic Syndrome: Evaluating The Influence Of Diet Quality, Lydia Mcgrath
Plant-Based Diets And Metabolic Syndrome: Evaluating The Influence Of Diet Quality, Lydia Mcgrath
Honors Scholar Theses
Background: Diet plays a critical role in the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Plant-based diets (PBDs) have demonstrated a broad range of health benefits, including a protective effect against MetS. Most research on this topic has focused on PBDs as a whole, without considering the influence of diet quality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between plant-based diet quality and biomarkers of MetS.
Methods: Data were obtained from a clinical nutrition study at the University of Connecticut. 29 participants with MetS were included. PBD quality was assessed using 2 measures: healthful PBD index (hPDI) …
Defining The Role Of Locus Coeruleus Noradrenergic Neurons In The Modulation Of Homeostatic Feeding, Julia Paul
Defining The Role Of Locus Coeruleus Noradrenergic Neurons In The Modulation Of Homeostatic Feeding, Julia Paul
Honors Scholar Theses
The locus coeruleus (LC) is a hindbrain structure that is the major source of norepinephrine (NE) input to the cortex and other forebrain areas. It is involved in processes of arousal, attention, and stress. It has been shown that the locus coeruleus norepinephrine system is also involved in the modulation of feeding. In this experiment, we used triple transgenic mice expressing the hM3Dq receptor in LC-NE neurons. These mice and littermate controls were overnight fasted then injected with vehicle or deschloroclozapine (DCZ), which is an inert ligand that solely activates the designer hM3Dq receptor. The mice were then immediately placed …
Autistic Individuals May See Emotions Differently: How Gradable Adjectives Can Be Used To Determine Emotion Recognition, Devon Murphy
Autistic Individuals May See Emotions Differently: How Gradable Adjectives Can Be Used To Determine Emotion Recognition, Devon Murphy
Honors Scholar Theses
Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by multiple differences in functioning, with a strong correlation to perceived language deficits. Evidence suggests that during childhood, children with ASD lag behind their TD peers in terms of emotion recognition skills. However, the prior research had not pushed into adolescence in studying these phenomena. The current study seeks to fill in that gap, and look at autistic individuals in adolescence to determine whether the previous research holds up as they age, or whether there is a significant change in skills. This study is a part of a longitudinal study on language acquisition in autistic …
The Chemogenetic Application And Biotherapeutic Potential Of Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated By Designer Drugs For Parkinson’S Disease, Andrew Mei
Honors Scholar Theses
Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs, or DREADDs, is a chemogenetic technique which, in recent years, has risen to prominence as a way to activate or deactivate targeted brain areas. This has granted scientists access to new tools in exploring treatment options for several neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson’s Disease. This review investigates how Parkinson's research has been shaped by DREADD-based techniques, and provides summaries of results found by this method. This includes links between Parkinson’s and orexin neurons, α-Synuclein, along with deep brain stimulation and biotherapeutics. The goal of this review is to describe a chemogenetic technique which is …

“And We’Re Happy, So Happy, To Be Modern Women”: Dissociative Feminism On Screen And In Literature, Michaela Elizabeth Flaherty
“And We’Re Happy, So Happy, To Be Modern Women”: Dissociative Feminism On Screen And In Literature, Michaela Elizabeth Flaherty
Honors Scholar Theses
On-screen and literary works have increasingly represented a new, digital-age wave of postfeminism: dissociative feminism, which rejects happy-go-lucky, sex-positive fourth-wave feminism, instead embracing nihilism. Fleabag, the titular character of the hit BBC miniseries Fleabag (2016–9), embodies dissociative feminism, though she ultimately comes to reject this darkly relatable perspective. However, social media largely ignores this latter, essential aspect of her character arc and has taken to romanticizing Fleabag’s feminist ideology, effectively constructing a harmful and dangerous virtual echo chamber of dissociative feminism. Participants in this online discourse should instead turn to the HBO limited series I May Destroy You (2020) for …

From this review, multiple factors were found to improve speech perception in noise, including using bilateral implants and increased experience with the implants. However, more studies are needed to determine if …
Minimal Inscribed Polyforms, Jack Hanke
Minimal Inscribed Polyforms, Jack Hanke
Honors Scholar Theses
A polyomino of size n is constructed by joining n unit squares together by their edge to form a shape in the plane. This thesis will first examine the formal definition of a polyomino and the common equivalence classes polyominos are enumerated under. We then turn to polyomino families, and provide exact enumeration results for certain families, including the minimal inscribed polyominos. Next we will generalize polyominos to polyforms, and provide novel formulae for polyform analogues of minimal inscribed polyominos. Finally, we discuss some further questions concerning minimal inscribed polyforms.

Honors Scholar Theses
This study examined the impact of health anxiety and emotional reasoning on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and preventative behaviors, hypothesizing that high anxiety and emotional reasoning would predict lower vaccine hesitancy and higher COVID-19 preventative health behavior after controlling for demographic variables. A large international non-probability convenience sample of 532 individuals consented to an online survey in a cross-sectional period from March through August 2021 (one month following availability of vaccinations in the USA). Participants completed questionnaires online. Health anxiety and general anxiety were significantly correlated with COVID-19 preventative behaviors, including mask wearing and social distancing, and emotional reasoning. General anxiety …
Stale Real Estate Convenants, Robert C. Ellickson
Stale Real Estate Convenants, Robert C. Ellickson
William & Mary Law Review
Since the 1970s, covenants running with the land have tethered a large majority of the new housing units produced in the United States. These private restraints usually continue for generations, until a majority or supermajority of covenant beneficiaries affirmatively vote to amend or terminate them. Covenants interact with public land use controls, particularly zoning ordinances. Zoning politics tends to freeze land uses in urban America, particularly in existing neighborhoods of single-family homes. This Article investigates to what extent covenants exacerbate the zoning freeze. It provides a history of the use of private covenants and suggests how drafters, judges, and legislators …
Congressional Rules Of Interpretation, Jarrod Shobe
Congressional Rules Of Interpretation, Jarrod Shobe
William & Mary Law Review
Many scholars argue that Congress should adopt federal rules of statutory interpretation to guide judicial interpretation. This Article uses a novel dataset to show that Congress has long used enacted rules of interpretation and has increasingly done so in recent decades. However, it has chosen to do so on a statute-by-statute basis in a way that has gone mostly unnoticed by scholars and judges. We developed a dataset by using computer code to search the U.S. Code dating back to 1946 for specific phrases indicating a rule of interpretation, then manually checked and classified each rule. These rules not only …

Whole‐Room Ultraviolet Sanitization As A Method For The Site‐Level Treatment Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans, Robert Kwait, Kathleen Kerwin, Carl Herzog, Joan Bennett, Sally Padhi, Isabelle Zoccolo, Brooke Maslo
KIP Articles
White‐nose syndrome (WNS), a catastrophic fungal disease of hibernating bats, is perpetuated by environmental reservoirs of the fungal pathogen, Pseudogymnoascus destructans . Surviving bats clear infection each summer but are re‐infected upon return to the hibernaculum. Therefore, addressing environmental reservoirs is critical for managing WNS. Ultraviolet (UV) light is known to kill P. destructans in the lab, and whole‐room UV sanitization is a common practice in many commercial settings. However, effective UV treatment at the hibernaculum scale has yet to be confirmed. Importantly, existing standard practices likely require modification for implementation in hibernation sites. Prior to field testing, confirming the …

A Cross Section Measurement Of Muon Neutrino-Induced Charged-Current Coherent Positive Pion Production On Argon With The Microboone Detector, Zachary Glenn Randell Williams
Physics Dissertations - Archive
Neutrino-induced charged-current coherent pion production is an important channel for the study of neutrino-nucleus interactions. It is both a dangerous background for $\nu_{e}$ oscillation experiments, and a critical component required for precise understanding of neutrino-nucleus pion production in general. This work performed a search for $\nu_{\mu}$-induced charged-current (CC) coherent pion production on argon in MicroBooNE from Fermilab's Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB), which produces $\nu_{\mu}$ with a mean energy of 0.823 GeV. A flux-integrated cross section measurement was made for this channel, and was found to be: $\sigma(\nu_{\mu} + Ar \rightarrow \mu^{-} + \pi^{+} + Ar) = 1.12 \pm 0.253 \textrm{(stat.)} …

Understanding The Intersectionality Of Bilingual Identities: Language And Biliteracy In Emergent Bilinguals, Natalia Carrillo
Understanding The Intersectionality Of Bilingual Identities: Language And Biliteracy In Emergent Bilinguals, Natalia Carrillo
Theses and Dissertations
Cummins (2018) argued that “emergent bilingual students struggle, often unsuccessfully, to escape from the externally imposed identity cocoon within which they find themselves” (p. x). This struggle leads to negative views and deficit thinking approaches to educating these students. In today’s educational context, meeting the cognitive needs of bilingual students is not sufficient. Schools must provide learning opportunities to affirm their identities to support their academic success. Research indicates that we must develop a deep understanding of the intersectionality of language, students’ identity construction, and language use (Norton, 2010; Potowski, 2007; Poza, 2016).
This study aimed to examine …
Discourses Surrounding Specific Learning Disability In Reading: An Exploration Across Special Education Policies, Martha M. Briseno
Discourses Surrounding Specific Learning Disability In Reading: An Exploration Across Special Education Policies, Martha M. Briseno
Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with disabilities have been subjected to deficit models that have led to unfair treatment, exclusion, and an unfitting education for years. Historical factors have informed policies toward the educational treatment and rights of individuals with disabilities in the United States since the 1600s. Before the enactment of The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) in 1975, it was common practice for children with disabilities to be segregated, excluded, and given an unsuitable education in comparison to their nondisabled counterparts. Throughout history, the language used in legislation and educational documents have compartmentalized students with disabilities based on …

If you look hard enough, there are stories of children in foster care. Tales of their plight, longing for love, the love of their parents, love from the foster care system, or a foster care family. However, despite their existence, so much is left in the unknown. The story of how this child’s life came into the world, what outcomes transpired for a parent to give up a child, and the journey the child may have to take for closure. Answers to the why. Why was I given up, why was I not sought out, why did my family …
A Decomposition Formula For The Multi-Soliton Solutions To The 'Good' Boussinesq Equation, Aldo Gonzalez
A Decomposition Formula For The Multi-Soliton Solutions To The 'Good' Boussinesq Equation, Aldo Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we relate multi-soliton waves generated by the 'good' Boussinesq equation to the distribution functions in the classical linear Schrödinger equation. The linear Schrödinger equation describes the distribution of a particle or particles in a particular environment. The Schrödinger equation is linear, the superposition principle of the solutions, especially the eigenfunctions is nonlinear and we will show that we may observe similar behavior in the solutions of the Boussinesq equations for soliton waves. The work extends the study of two-soliton solutions to the Boussinesq equation to the case of three-soliton solutions. …
