Effects Of A Remote Exercise Intervention On Aerobic Endurance In Individuals With Down Syndrome, Andrew Murata, Elena Wolf, Jonathan Crimm, Benjamin Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Purpose: Down syndrome (Ds) or Trisomy 21 is a common genetic birth condition, and those with Ds typically display decreased cardiorespiratory fitness compared to those without Ds, potentially leading to an increased risk for cardiovascular conditions and mortality. Low cardiorespiratory fitness is partially caused by low physical activity levels in this population. The COVID-19 pandemic caused community-based activity programs to shut down, as individuals with Ds are at increased risk for COVID-19 hospitalization and death. Thus, it was vital to explore alternatives of in-person exercise during the pandemic. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a …

Walking With Poles Improves Step Length Of Simulated Prosthetic Gait, Marissa Elquist, Daniel Perez, Jonathan Garcia, Brady Owens

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Individuals with lower limb loss often demonstrate gait deviations which cause instability and asymmetry. Walking with poles has been shown to improve stride length and stability in older adult and other patient populations. The enhanced arm involvement in bipedal walking with poles has the potential to facilitate interlimb coordination among arms and legs, and therefore is likely to improve prosthetic gait. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of walking poles on temporal gait parameters and the center of mass (COM) displacement during prosthetic and simulated prosthetic gait. It was hypothesized that walking with poles would improve …

Dust-Gas Dynamics Driven By The Streaming Instability With Various Pressure Gradients, Stanley Antedio Baronett May 2022

Dust-Gas Dynamics Driven By The Streaming Instability With Various Pressure Gradients, Stanley Antedio Baronett

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The radial pressure gradient (RPG), along the midplane of gaseous protoplanetary disks (PPD) – planetary nurseries – poses a severe obstacle to planet formation. Micron-sized dust grains, embedded in the disc, must quickly grow to kilometer-sized planetesimals – the building blocks of planets – before fatally drifting inwards, by RPG-induced gas drag, into a central host star. However, the RPG simultaneously powers one of the most robust processes to overcome this radial-drift barrier: the streaming instability (SI). Spontaneously triggered, the SI aerodynamically concentrates drifting dust via drag-induced, coupled interactions and feedback with the surrounding gas. In particular, the non-linear phase …

Towards Highly Sensitive Capacitance Measurements Of A Quantum Anomalous Hall Phase In Van Der Waal Heterostructures, Kayla Cerminara May 2022

Towards Highly Sensitive Capacitance Measurements Of A Quantum Anomalous Hall Phase In Van Der Waal Heterostructures, Kayla Cerminara

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

One of the pioneering achievements in condensed matter physics of the 20th century is the observation of the quantum Hall e↵ect (QHE) in which the Hall resistance in a two-dimensional (2D) sample takes on quantized values in the presence of a strong perpendicular magnetic field. The precise quantization of the hall resistance to one part in a billion has provided a practical, worldwide resistance standard. A long-standing goal has been to realize a similar state of matter but without the need of a strong quantizing magnetic field. The quantum anomalous Hall e↵ect (QAHE) is such a state that is predicted …

Women’S Use Of The Gym Space: How Physical Activity Spaces Communicate Inclusion And Exclusion To Women, Rachel Glaze May 2022

Women’S Use Of The Gym Space: How Physical Activity Spaces Communicate Inclusion And Exclusion To Women, Rachel Glaze

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Women are less likely than men to participate in recommended levels of physical activity. As gyms are built around exercise, this research sought to understand if women’s gym participation is limited, due to the space communicating messages of exclusion. Semi-structured interviews with seven women participants led to the discovery of three themes surrounding women’s experiences in the gym setting: Comfort and confidence in the space stem from self-perceived levels of attractiveness, women treat the space as communal to better understand how to navigate it, and organizational spaces can communicate messages of class and socioeconomic differences. Recommendations for future research included …

Sex, Body Size, And Winter Weather Explain Migration Strategies In A Partial Migrant Population Of American Kestrels (Falco Sparverius), Sadie Claire Ranck May 2022

Sex, Body Size, And Winter Weather Explain Migration Strategies In A Partial Migrant Population Of American Kestrels (Falco Sparverius), Sadie Claire Ranck

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Partially migratory systems describe populations that consist of both individuals that migrate away from the breeding grounds for the winter, and others that remain resident near their nesting sites year-round. Partial migration is the most common type of migration across all animal taxa, but the evolution, maintenance, and consequences associated with different movement strategies are still poorly understood. Studying the factors that drive migratory strategies and the associated consequences of those decisions is important to understand how migratory animals may adapt to climate change. Partial migrant populations offer a great opportunity for which to study these questions because individuals with …

Phenomenon-Based Instruction In The Elementary Classroom: Impact On Student Engagement And Achievement In Science Content Learning, Chris Taylor May 2022

Phenomenon-Based Instruction In The Elementary Classroom: Impact On Student Engagement And Achievement In Science Content Learning, Chris Taylor

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Phenomenon-based teaching is a multidisciplinary instructional approach based on student inquiry and problem solving. Students investigate and solve their own questions by applying what topics are relevant to the problem. The goal of phenomenon-based learning is to prepare learners to solve problems in real life. Instead of passively learning abstract or disconnected concepts, phenomenon-based instruction provides student’s rich and meaningful context to the subject by actively engaging them to discover knowledge and skills required to solve the problems. Phenomenon-based instruction gives students the opportunities for discourse, argumentation-using claims with supporting evidence, and making sense of the material being covered, ultimately …

Circadian Modulation Of Astrocyte Morphology And Synaptic Transmission, Saad Ahmad May 2022

Circadian Modulation Of Astrocyte Morphology And Synaptic Transmission, Saad Ahmad

Biological Sciences

The circadian rhythm affects behavior and physiology in many animal species. Our previous work in mice showed that within the hippocampus, a subordinate circadian oscillator, astrocytes change their proximity to excitatory synapses. Here we obtain 3D reconstructions of biocytin-filled hippocampal astrocytes processed with protein retention expansion microscopy and imaged using two-photon laser scanning microscopy. Our findings identify the subtle changes in astrocyte morphologies that encode information about time-of-day in hippocampal astrocytes. These findings shed light on fundamental mechanisms that allow the function of hippocampal circuits to adapt to different times of the day. This will help us understand how structural …

Votes And Voices: Minority Languages And Electoral Substate Nationalism In Spain And The United Kingdom, Valeryn Shepherd May 2022

Votes And Voices: Minority Languages And Electoral Substate Nationalism In Spain And The United Kingdom, Valeryn Shepherd

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Substate nationalist political parties are a key component of the electoral politics of Spain and the United Kingdom. The demographic support that these parties receive is often tied to speakers of regional languages. In this paper, six regions in the two countries - Scotland, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Galicia - are examined using geographic data analysis to determine whether communities with a high level of minority language speakers are more likely to vote for substate nationalist parties. In most of the cases, I find that there is a strong connection between the two.

Hate In The Heartland: Examining Hate Groups In Nebraska’S Past And Present, Grant Van Robays May 2022

Hate In The Heartland: Examining Hate Groups In Nebraska’S Past And Present, Grant Van Robays

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Hate groups that malign entire classes of people based on race, religion, sexuality, gender, or other characteristic appear in every U.S. state. Nebraska is home to nine such groups, one of the highest figures in the country on a per capita basis. While notoriously secretive, previous research and watchdog reporting has pulled back the curtain on hate groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan and various neo-Nazi organizations, positing theories on how and why groups form. Minimal research has described in depth hate groups in a single state, let alone a quaint state like Nebraska. This case study of hate …

Remedial Rhythm Reading: A Semester-Long Project In Sixth Grade Band, Hannah Fisher May 2022

Remedial Rhythm Reading: A Semester-Long Project In Sixth Grade Band, Hannah Fisher

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic greatly impacted student outcomes in all disciplines, but especially in the performing arts. As I began clinical teaching, I found my sixth-grade band students, particularly the students not involved in choir (my “small band”), lacked the music literacy and fluency expected for second-year band students. I designed a one semester rhythm-reading unit to address this issue. The overall objective for the unit follows:

“Students will be able to read, write, perform, and compose rhythms containing whole notes, half notes, dotted-half notes, dotted-quarter notes, quarter notes, paired eighth notes, single eighth notes, paired sixteenth notes, and corresponding rests …

A Collection Of Suitable For Publication Short Stories, Rhett Milner May 2022

A Collection Of Suitable For Publication Short Stories, Rhett Milner

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The start of this creative project came about as a challenge for myself to both polish and refine pieces of short fiction I’ve worked on during my time at the University of Nebraska at Omaha while also becoming involved in the deeper world of publication and literary magazines. The form of short fiction I sought to delve into was a contemporary branch of literary realism, often in the style and footsteps of Raymond Carver, Richard Ford, James Baldwin, and many others. The next step I took was searching for literary magazines in which my work could be published. Literary magazines …

The Impacts Of Positive Praise On Science Achievement Levels Of Female Students, Sidney Hanel May 2022

The Impacts Of Positive Praise On Science Achievement Levels Of Female Students, Sidney Hanel

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

To the general eye, it appears there has been an increase of women in STEM and overall female interest in science however, this is not apparent in the high school classrooms. The lowest level physics classrooms are overwhelmingly female, and the AP Physics class of twenty-five students has two female students. Society is seeing more equal numbers of males and females in biology, healthcare, dentistry, and other medical related fields. This is a wonderful advancement however many other STEM careers are being forgotten.

This study focuses on five physical science courses one of which is provided with additional feedback and …

Diagnostic Utility Of Red Cell Indices In Relation To Serum Iron Indices For Evaluation Of Iron Deficiency In Heart Failure, Larry Wangai Mburu May 2022

Diagnostic Utility Of Red Cell Indices In Relation To Serum Iron Indices For Evaluation Of Iron Deficiency In Heart Failure, Larry Wangai Mburu

Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine

Background: Iron deficiency (ID) in heart failure (HF) causes poorer outcomes, and evaluation using ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT) in our setting is hampered by cost and availability. Though the red cell indices (RCIs), routinely used for assessment of ID anaemia, have shown utility in predicting outcomes in HF, they have not been evaluated in this population for prediction of ID relative to the iron indices. A combination of the RCIs, the combined cell index (CCI), may be more accurate. Validating the diagnostic accuracy of the RCIs would improve evaluation of ID in low-resource settings and improve uptake of iron …

Mechanistic Insights Into Gram-Negative Envelope Remodeling For Protection Against Severe Outer Membrane Defects, Katie N. Kang May 2022

Mechanistic Insights Into Gram-Negative Envelope Remodeling For Protection Against Severe Outer Membrane Defects, Katie N. Kang

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Gram-negative bacteria account for the majority of antibiotic resistant infections. Regulated modifications within the cell envelope can promote resistance to clinically important antibiotics. The increased prevalence of antibiotic treatment failure highlights the importance of investigating the underlying resistance mechanisms. Of particular concern is resistance to last-line antimicrobials, such as polymyxin E (colistin). Colistin is a cationic antimicrobial lipopeptide that binds the negatively charged lipid A domain of lipopolysaccharide, a glycolipid enriched in the Gram-negative outer membrane, to perturb the envelope and lyse the cell. However, several Gram- negative pathogens have evolved intrinsic colistin resistance mechanisms. For example, many Enterobacteriaceae modify …

Prisoners, Punitive Damages, And Precedent, Oh My! The Eleventh Circuit In Hoever Overrules Prior Interpretation Of The Prison Litigation Reform Act, Tatiana Dobretsova

Mercer Law Review

Imagine you are a prisoner at Dooly State Prison in Unadilla, Georgia. A squad of about thirty officers march into the prison one day, dressed in riot gear, chanting, “kill, kill, kill.” The officers begin cursing and ordering inmates to get out of their cells, even yanking some by their shirts if they are not moving quickly enough. As you and the other inmates rush out of your cells, you are subjected to body cavity searches—you are ordered to strip naked, squat and cough, turn around, and bend over, all in the presence of several officers. An officer hands you …

Creating A Civil Remedy In Georgia For Survivors Of Out-Of-State Childhood Sexual Abuse, Alexandra H. Bradley May 2022

Creating A Civil Remedy In Georgia For Survivors Of Out-Of-State Childhood Sexual Abuse, Alexandra H. Bradley

Mercer Law Review

Sexual abuse casts long shadows and causes long-lasting effects on its survivors, particularly children. Especially tragic, most abused children are abused by an adult whom that child knows and trusts. This abuse by anyone, especially by a child’s parents or close family friend, often causes lifelong emotional damage. Survivors generally do not recognize the extent of their abuse until many years later.

This late onset or delayed discovery has made it difficult for courts to provide redress. Although technically children could sue their abuser when the abuse occurs, children generally do not know they have a cause of action, nor …
