Anisotropic Third-Harmonic Generation Of Exfoliated As2s3 Thin Flakes, Ravi P.N. Tripathi, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Van der Waals (vdW) materials have recently attracted significant interest in the context of orientation-dependent linear and nonlinear optical properties. Recently, arsenic trisulfide (As2S3) or orpiment is identified as a new vdW layered material having anisotropic vibrational and optomechanical responses due to the reduced in-plane crystal symmetry, but its nonlinear optical response is still not well understood yet. Herein, the anisotropic third-harmonic generation (THG) response of mechanically exfoliated As2S3 thin flakes is reported. The polarization-dependent evolution of THG emission from butterfly-shaped pattern to four-lobe pattern is comprehensively explored. Moreover, the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of As2S3 crystal is extracted by analyzing …
Genetic Heterogeneity In Schizophrenia And Contribution Of Context To Vowel Recognition, Eva Childers
Genetic Heterogeneity In Schizophrenia And Contribution Of Context To Vowel Recognition, Eva Childers
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
This dissertation is composed of three chapters that address two distinct topics. Chapter 2 addresses the use of consonantal context in vowel perception. Previous studies have demonstrated that context is important for vowel identification, however, this effect may be an artifact of stimuli production. To address this potential confound, we used stimuli extracted from an audiobook and asked subjects to identify vowels encased in consonants and isolated by themselves. We show that subjects had improved vowel identification when the vowel is presented with a consonantal framing, suggesting there is information contained in the surrounding context that is important for phoneme …
To Infinity And Beyond: Shifting The Space Regulatory Framework To Create Conservation-Minded Expansion, Brandon M.G. Dekema
To Infinity And Beyond: Shifting The Space Regulatory Framework To Create Conservation-Minded Expansion, Brandon M.G. Dekema
Natural Resources Journal
The early days of American expansion were categorized by policies that emphasized resource extraction and utilization. In turn, these policies created major conflicts with overuse, ownership, and rehabilitation−, many of which continue to this day. Now, the United States has begun to shift its focus to the next untapped frontier: outer space. As resource extraction in space grows more feasible, the United States has begun to shape a regulatory framework. In doing so, the United States is copying early American resource policy, leaving open the same gaps for conflicts arising from overuse, ownership disputes, and restoration. This paper analyzes historical …

Enhancing Sales Education By Incorporating An Innovative International Role Play, Diane R. Edmondson, Lucy Matthews, Hannah Makarczyk
Atlantic Marketing Journal
In today’s society, the global marketplace has become more relevant to all businesses to help ensure sustainability (Hummel, 2012). In marketing, students pursuing a career in sales can find significant opportunities; however, there are unique skills needed when selling internationally (Salesforce, 2021). Prior research has highlighted lost revenue due to internationally incompetent employees (Daniel, Xie, & Kedia, 2014). A content analysis of 139 Sales Education Foundation universities was completed to determine the extent to which international sales education is currently being incorporated in sales curriculum. Results indicate that only 6.5% include some international sales element as part of their program. …
Exploring Melatonin As A Treatment For Oral Ulcers, William H. Sutherland
Exploring Melatonin As A Treatment For Oral Ulcers, William H. Sutherland
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The hormone melatonin is best known for its role in the sleep-wake cycle, but its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects have significant implications that have not been fully explored in oral health. Some studies use melatonin to treat gastrointestinal ulcers, including duodenal ulcers and oral mucositis, but we found no study reporting its effects on more common oral ulcers, like aphthous stomatitis. We hypothesize that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics of melatonin could effectively prevent and heal oral ulcers. In this paper, we review the literature on melatonin to propose its use as a treatment for oral ulcers. We also include …

Identifying The Geographic Origins Of Invasive Megathyrsus Maximus In The United States Using Molecular Data, John F. Gaskin, John A. Goolsby, Marie Claude Bon, Massimo Cristofaro, Paul André Calatayud
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Megathyrsus maximus is nonnative in the neotropics, with a tall form that is commonly used as a forage grass and a smaller-statured form that is considered invasive in south Texas, USA. Biological control researchers are challenged to find an agent that will attack the short form, but not the desirable tall form in other parts of the neotropics. We conducted molecular analyses on 155 Megathyrsus maximus samples from its native range in Africa and compared them with U.S. short-form samples to help determine the geographic origins of its invasion. We found eight distinct genotypes in 34 short-form samples from Texas …

Racial and ethnic minorities, and women, experience stark disparities in cancer risk behaviors and mortality rates, yet often remain underrepresented in scientific research positions. We conducted an exploratory, qualitative study to examine the value of mentored research experience as part of an NCI-funded research training program designed to increase the representation of minority and women scientists in cancer disparities research. Using individual interviews, we explored 16 mentees' and 7 mentors' program experiences and perspectives to identify the most effective strategies to build strong mentoring relationships that could ultimately contribute to increased representation in health disparities research. Two expert analysts employed …
Best Practices For Inclusion Of Special Education Students In Elementary Classrooms, Stephanie Leedahl
Best Practices For Inclusion Of Special Education Students In Elementary Classrooms, Stephanie Leedahl
Graduate Teacher Education
Inclusion in elementary education has been gaining momentum in research and implementation over the past two to three decades. Best practices are becoming more well documented and research is mounting surrounding the benefits of inclusionary practices in elementary classrooms. Several themes surrounding inclusion have become evident as necessary for understanding inclusion such as classroom community, nonexamples of inclusion, relationships, student choice, and teacher training. In order to best support young students with a wide range of abilities and backgrounds, educators must first understand what inclusion is and is not. Then teachers can better implement inclusionary practices in their classrooms to …

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This article presents findings from a qualitative inquiry that explored the underlying motives of career change among Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) students in Tanzania. Focused group discussions (FGDs) were used to collect data to address two study objectives: first, explore the reasons why PGDE students tend to change their career; and second, determine PGDE students’ intentions to join and stay in the new career. The findings indicate that career change is motived by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Specifically, career change motives are due to job dissatisfaction, employment opportunities, wrong first career choice, and the desire for career growth. …

Experimental Study On Fatigue Performance Of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete-Orthotropic Composite Bridge Deck, Ye Huawen, Tang Shiqing, Duan Zhichao, Yang Zhe
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
Orthotropic steel bridge decks are prone to fatigue cracking. The adoption of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) composite bridge decks is one of the solutions. Through the wheeled rolling loading fatigue test simulating the actual wheel load on the full-scale model of the SFRC composite bridge deck, three connection methods, namely adhesive, stud, and a mixture of adhesive and stud, were respectively adopted between the concrete layer and the orthotropic steel bridge deck structure layer to study the fatigue deformation of the composite bridge deck and the failure evolution mode of each component. Then, the crack development behavior of the …

Chronic illness (CI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality for Indigenous people. In Montana, Indigenous communities disproportionately experience CI, a legacy of settler colonialism. For over two decades, Messengers for Health, an Apsáalooke (Crow Indian) non-profit, and Montana State University have partnered to improve community health using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach. We developed Báa nnilah, an intervention utilizing community strengths, to improve CI self-management. This manuscript describes the protocol for a cluster randomized trial with two arms: an intervention group and a wait list control group, who both participated in the Báa nnilah program. Enrollment occurred …

Research On A New Type Of Prefabricated Bridge Human-Vehicle Isolation Anti-Collision Guardrail, Zhou Jingyu, Tang Junyi, Huang Jingyun
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
In recent years, out-of-control motor vehicles often climb the sidewalk steps, break the fence, and fall off the bridge, which has brought a series of heavy losses to people’s lives and property safety. Therefore, it is urgent to take feasible measures to improve the protective performance of bridge collision guardrails, so as to effectively control the risk of such accidents and reduce their consequences. On the basis of summarizing the application characteristics and shortcomings of existing anti-collision measures for bridges, this paper proposed a new type of prefabricated anti-collision guardrail for bridges to achieve separation of pedestrians and vehicles. HOX proteins are transcription factors that regulate stem cell (SC) function, but their role in the SC origin of cancer is under-studied. Aberrant expression of HOX genes occurs in many cancer types. Our goal is to ascertain how retinoic acid (RA) signaling and the regulation of HOXA9 expression might play a role in the SC origin of human colorectal cancer (CRC). Previously, we reported that aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) and other RA pathway components are co-expressed in colonic cancer SCs (CSCs) and that overpopulation of ALDH-positive CSCs occurs during colon tumorigenesis. Our hypothesis is RA signaling regulates HOXA9 expression, and dysregulated …

Background: Microglia plays crucial roles in Alzheimer's disease (AD) development. Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) in association with DAP12 mediates signaling affecting microglia function. Here we study the negative regulation of TREM2 functions by leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor subfamily B member 2 (LILRB2), an inhibitory receptor bearing ITIM motifs.
Methods: To specifically interrogate LILRB2-ligand (oAβ and PS) interactions and microglia functions, we generated potent antagonistic LILRB2 antibodies with sub-nanomolar level activities. The biological effects of LILRB2 antagonist antibody (Ab29) were studied in human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived microglia (hMGLs) for migration, oAβ phagocytosis, and upregulation of inflammatory …

Cardiac Rehabilitation Adherence Rates In Elderly Patients Using A Mobile Application, Amanda Wilson
Cardiac Rehabilitation Adherence Rates In Elderly Patients Using A Mobile Application, Amanda Wilson
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Adherence to cardiac rehabilitation reduces cardiovascular disease mortality. Despite this, adherence rates remain suboptimal especially among older patients. Mobile applications are increasingly utilized to deliver virtual healthcare with similar health outcomes. However, no studies have determined whether cardiac rehabilitation delivered via mobile applications can increase adherence rates in elderly patients who may be limited by logistical barriers, such as difficulties with transportation. The aim of this study is to examine whether cardiac rehabilitation conducted via mobile application can increase adherence rates to cardiac rehabilitation in patients over 65 years old compared with traditional cardiac rehabilitation. We will conduct a randomized, …

An Analysis Of Groundwater Storage Loss In The Central Valley Using A Novel In Situ Method Compared To Grace-Derived Results, Michael David Stevens
An Analysis Of Groundwater Storage Loss In The Central Valley Using A Novel In Situ Method Compared To Grace-Derived Results, Michael David Stevens
Theses and Dissertations
Robust groundwater management is necessary to maintain long-term aquifer sustainability. Temporally and spatially inconsistent in situ data prevents robust groundwater resource evaluation. Data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission has been used to evaluate long-term, large-scale groundwater trends. However, the spatial resolution of GRACE data presents challenges for groundwater management in medium-sized aquifers like the Central Valley of California (CV). Other researchers have utilized GRACEderived data to evaluate groundwater storage in the CV, but they often make corrections due to what is referred to as the "leakage effect." We demonstrate a method for imputing gaps in …

Literacy Identity And Motherhood: Implications Of Hermans' Dialogical Self Theory, Chelsea J. Ames
Literacy Identity And Motherhood: Implications Of Hermans' Dialogical Self Theory, Chelsea J. Ames
Theses and Dissertations
This multiple case study shows how motherhood works with and against two women's literacy identities, as interpreted through the theoretical lens of Herman's Dialogical Self Theory. The evidence of this is shown in the tension between their roles as mothers and their personal roles as readers and writers. In many ways, taking on a reader or writer role meant to deny other roles for these women, showing the clash between efforts to consolidate multiple I-positions. While their meta-positions helped them recognize the discrepancies in their I-positions, there was little evidence of mediating third positions to negotiate their roles. This descriptive …
