Mapping Of Electroencephalogram (Eeg) Responses To Newsvendor Decision Model And Cerebral Hemodynamic Responses To Transcranial Photobiomodulation (Tpbm) In Humans, Cong Dung Nghi Truong

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Decision-making is one of the most critical activities of human beings. Various studies have investigated the brain responses to a variety of decision tasks by deploying the EEG data. The first aim of my dissertation was to investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms and correlations across multiple subjects when people make risky economic decisions. A decision-making task was designed based on the newsvendor problem (NP) with two scenarios: low-profit margins (LM) as the more challenging scenario and high-profit margins (HM) as the less difficult one. The EEG signals were acquired from healthy humans while subjects were performing the task. The Correlated Component …

Engineering Enzymatic Pathways In The Gut Microbiome To Control Dietary Isoflavone Metabolism, Lenaiya Allisen Kydd May 2022

Engineering Enzymatic Pathways In The Gut Microbiome To Control Dietary Isoflavone Metabolism, Lenaiya Allisen Kydd

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT: Observing how plasmids persist within the gut can help us understand how newly introduced genes are transmitted within the gut microbiome. I sought to determine the persistence of genetic constructs introduced to the murine gut and then develop our own genetic system to be delivered to the gut to engineer the microbiome in its ability to convert certain dietary isoflavones. In my initial experiments, mice were given bacteria containing a genetically engineered plasmid and were examined for the persistence of the plasmid in the gut. I found long-term persistence of the plasmid in the gut for up to 2 …

Novel Nanocomposites For The Treatment Of Lung Infections, Uday Kumar Chintapula May 2022

Novel Nanocomposites For The Treatment Of Lung Infections, Uday Kumar Chintapula

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Lung infections, especially lower respiratory tract infections and their associated pneumonias, are one of the leading causes of death, accounting for more than 4 million fatalities every year worldwide. Bacterial pathogens are involved in many lower respiratory tract infections including emerging antibiotic resistant respiratory pathogens such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Current interventions for MRSA lung infections include systemic antibiotic treatments for an extended period leading to various side effects such as acute kidney injury, nephrotoxicity, and so on. To overcome these limitations, the goal of this dissertation research is to develop a drug delivery system, which includes pathogen-specific drug-loaded …

Parental Involvement And Satisfaction: A Comparative Study Of High-School Charter Schools And Traditional Public Schools, Nicholas Thompson-Davis May 2022

Parental Involvement And Satisfaction: A Comparative Study Of High-School Charter Schools And Traditional Public Schools, Nicholas Thompson-Davis

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

The purpose of this study is to examine parents’ levels of satisfaction with school choice by comparing charter and traditional public schools at the secondary level. The main assumption of the study is that parental satisfaction with school choice is related to parental involvement with children’s education and their views of school-home communication. The study is guided by Bourdieu’s theory of capital to interpret parental involvement efforts and their assessment of school-home communication as ways to acquire social capital for themselves and their children. Epstein’s framework of parental involvement allows for operationalizing the concept with respect to school and out-of-school …

The Medicalization Of Communication: An Analysis Of The Policies And Educational Practices Surrounding Patient And Physician Interaction, Ramona Jewelmaria Dorough

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation explores the medicalization domains through three studies to assert that communication exists in all facets of the patient- physician relationship. The first study is a policy analysis that examines the institutional domain through policies and educational standards created in the medical community that dictate the importance of communication. The second study examines medical students' level of clinical empathy using the Jefferson Scales of Empathy. The second study ties to the conceptual domain of the medicalization of communication, showing the creation of terminology (i.e., clinical empathy, clinical communication) helps uniquely identify and measure empathy through communication. The third study …

Algorithm development, and biological signal processing are the key components for new applications of successful medical diagnosis that can provide physiological and functional information to better understand human condition for either patients with certain diseases or healthy human beings. Neuroimaging tools, such as functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and electrogastrography (EGG) have been used to investigate the gut maturity in diseased and healthy state; and electroencephalogram (EEG) have been used to investigate brain functions in response to neuromodulated or task-based interventions. Accordingly, my dissertation focused on algorithm development and signal processing for two major topics: (1) to outline EGG response …

Hydrodynamic Forces On Stream-Crossing Bridges – Consideration Of Flow Parameters, Bridge Geometry, And Debris, Shah Md Imran Kabir May 2022

Hydrodynamic Forces On Stream-Crossing Bridges – Consideration Of Flow Parameters, Bridge Geometry, And Debris, Shah Md Imran Kabir

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the interaction of flood flow with bridge superstructures by considering the effects of the flow parameters, bridge geometry, debris, and bridge substructures. The hydrodynamic forces are expressed by using force and moment coefficient charts to portray the effect of bridge submersion, bridge position with respect to the channel bed, flood velocity, and bridge geometry. Of the 580,000 bridges in the United States, 83% span streams and rivers that may subject them to floods and debris loads. Although bridges are designed to withstand hydrodynamic forces, the most frequent causes of failure are attributed to hydraulic events, including …

Performance Of Density Estimators In Additive Measurement Error Models Based On Right Censored Data, Hrishabh Khakurel May 2022

Performance Of Density Estimators In Additive Measurement Error Models Based On Right Censored Data, Hrishabh Khakurel

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

In the deconvolution problem for right censored data, one is interested in estimating the density of a contaminated variable X when X satisfies Z= X+ E, where E is a measurement error with a known distribution, and the observable variable Z is right-censored. Zhu, Sun, Khakurel, and Wang (2021) applied the Inverse Probability of Censoring Weighted Average method and derived the estimators of the unknown density of X. In this study, we evaluate the performance of the density estimators both in theory and in simulation. We derive the theoretical upper bounds for Mean Squared Error (MSE) of the estimator and …

Creativity And Spirituality: The Undeniable Connection Between The Two, Elizabeth A. Vesneske

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

Exploring the Spiritual Nature of Creativity

As a deeply spiritual person I began to notice that as I developed my spiritual practices and grew deeper in my spirituality my creativity started to flourish. Ironically enough, I had chosen a master’s program that focused solely on creativity. This is something I would later call a synchronicity, where things in your life magically happen to align. My spirituality, something I am so passionate about started to work its way into my graduate studies. Finding the Center for Applied Imagination through Buffalo State College has not only allowed me to strengthen my creativity …

Worth A Shot: Encouraging Vaccine Uptake Through “Empathy”, Dr. Jody Lyneé Madeira May 2022

Worth A Shot: Encouraging Vaccine Uptake Through “Empathy”, Dr. Jody Lyneé Madeira

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Pro- and anti-vaccine organizations and individuals have frequently invoked empathy as a strategy for increasing uptake of COVID-19 precautions, including vaccinations. On one hand, vaccine supporters deployed empathy to defuse conflict, prioritize safeguarding the collective welfare, and avoid government mandates. On the other hand, vaccine opponents used empathy to emphasize the alleged individual effects of pandemic precautions, mobilize public voices, and stress the importance of medical freedom in policy-making contexts.

This Article first defines empathy and reviews empathy scholarship, paying particular attention to its relationship with narrative and the contexts where empathy can be difficult or dangerous. It then applies …

Untangling Right From Wrong In Insanity Law: Of Dogs, Wolves & God, Kate E. Bloch May 2022

Untangling Right From Wrong In Insanity Law: Of Dogs, Wolves & God, Kate E. Bloch

UC Law Journal

In almost all U.S. jurisdictions, a qualifying mental illness that prevents an accused from distinguishing right from wrong can provide support for a determination of legal insanity. Nonetheless, “wrongfulness” remains a term of myriad and somewhat elusive meanings. Instead of enhancing clarity, by engaging with simplified examples, the U.S. Supreme Court’s broad-brush approach in its 2020 majority and dissenting opinions in Kahler v. Kansas threatens to exacerbate confusion about “wrongfulness” in legal insanity doctrine. This Article surfaces challenges in the Court’s and dissent’s analyses and aims to discourage reliance on problematic assumptions about “wrongfulness” in insanity law.

The News And Social Media Algorithms: An Evaluation Of Serendipity In The Infosphere., Libby Petrie May 2022

The News And Social Media Algorithms: An Evaluation Of Serendipity In The Infosphere., Libby Petrie

Journalism Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study investigates consumer responses to a theoretical solution to many of the problems facing today's infospheres, including but not limited to echo chamber behaviors, misinformation, and polarization. The solution, conceptualized as the “Architecture of Serendipity,” proposes that media platforms tweak their existing algorithms to introduce a threshold of “serendipity,” or random and varied content in order to diminish the effects caused by the over-personalization of today's most relevant information systems (Sunstein, 2017). While there is a belief among certain academics that the architecture can prove to be incredibly impactful at diminishing these negative consequences, there is no commentary on …

Brains Without Money: Poverty As Disabling, Emily R.D. Murphy May 2022

Brains Without Money: Poverty As Disabling, Emily R.D. Murphy

Connecticut Law Review

The United States has long treated poverty and disability as separate legal and social categories, a division grounded in widespread assumptions about the “deserving” and “undeserving” poor. In the case of disability, individuals generally are not thought to be morally responsible for their disadvantage, whereas in the case of poverty, individuals are assumed to be at fault for their disadvantage and are therefore less deserving of aid. This Article argues that recent advances in brain and behavioral science undermine the factual basis for those assumptions. Poverty inhibits brain development during childhood and, later in life, adversely affects cognitive capacities that …

Response: In And Out Of The Game, As Usual, Steven E. Jones

English Faculty Publications

In this response article, I revisit the idea of paratext in video games. I start, however, with the example of a book by Tolstoy, and the textual studies work of McKenzie and McGann, in order to make the point that paratextuality has never been limited to Genette’s rigid definition, even in the case of print texts. Video games foreground what has always been the case: the dynamic, volatile, multidirectional nature of paratexts, which can take you into but also out of the enclosure of the main text (or “game itself”) in unexpected ways. Illustrations include Animal Crossing: New Horizons and …
