Living Aesthetics In China: Aesthetics As A New Direction, Liu Yuedi Nov 2022

Living Aesthetics In China: Aesthetics As A New Direction, Liu Yuedi

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Living Aesthetics (生活美学, Sheng-huo-mei-xue) is a popular key term in Chinese society and culture today. The aestheticization of living, originally rooted in Chinese soil, is authentic Chinese wisdom and now is being fully revitalized. Confucian aesthetics can be classified as Living Aesthetics, one based on emotion/feeling (qing). The philosophical interpretation of Confucianism from the viewpoint of Living Aesthetics can be better explained in its original context. In Confucius’s time, the unity of rites (li) and music (yue) were the backbone of Confucian aesthetics. But with the gradual decline of music in Chinese history, this …

Place, Race, Gender And Materiality: Bisa Butler Making The Last, First And The First, Last In The Modern Museum, Charles Peterson, A. W. Eaton Nov 2022

Place, Race, Gender And Materiality: Bisa Butler Making The Last, First And The First, Last In The Modern Museum, Charles Peterson, A. W. Eaton

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Bisa Butler is a contemporary artist who creates stunning portraits composed entirely of textiles. In this article, we argue that one significant aspect of Butler’s oeuvre is the way that she deeply entwines the ethico-political and the aesthetic in a beautiful symbiotic partnership. Through a careful examination of her work, her technique, her artistic and museum contexts, and the unknown African American subjects she celebrates, we argue that Butler’s work should be understood as liberatory artistic practice that disrupts hegemonic spaces and ideologies.

Defining The Role Of Core Histones In Cellular Quiescence, Eric M. Small Nov 2022

Defining The Role Of Core Histones In Cellular Quiescence, Eric M. Small

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Quiescence is a distinct cell cycle phase, termed G0, in which growth, transcriptional and translational activity, and replication are halted. Importantly, quiescent cells are viable and can return to the cell cycle. Quiescence is a feature of all organisms and a key hallmark of stem cells; however, the regulation of quiescence is still poorly understood.

Prior studies have implicated chromatin in the regulation of quiescence. In aim 1 I conducted a comprehensive screen of H3 and H4 histone mutants to identify chromatin features that may affect quiescence. I identified several histone residues implicated in transcriptional regulation that altered quiescence and …

Public Lands In Public Hands: Analysis Of The Underpinnings Of Utah’S Public Trust Doctrine, Brittany Bunker Thorley Nov 2022

Public Lands In Public Hands: Analysis Of The Underpinnings Of Utah’S Public Trust Doctrine, Brittany Bunker Thorley

BYU Law Review

Utah Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the third driest state, is a vital, yet underappreciated natural resource. In 2018, the Utah State Legislature passed the Utah Lake Restoration Act in an attempt to restore and enhance the lake’s ecological and recreational value. Yet the new law has been met with strong public resistance because it leaves the lake vulnerable to exploitation and further ecological degradation, a concern made real by a proposed development plan that would build a city of islands on top of the lake. Community members cite specific concerns about threats to native species, disruption of water …

A Big Disenchantment, Wolfgang Welsch Nov 2022

A Big Disenchantment, Wolfgang Welsch

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

For millennia, aesthetic activities were expected to improve the world and ourselves. Aesthetics was to hone humanity. We find this conviction in Antiquity, in the Middle Ages, in the Renaissance, and throughout Modern Times and Modernity, from Plato via Leonardo da Vinci and Schiller to Dewey and Rorty. But this expectation is being harshly falsified in the present time. We are indeed aestheticizing everything through and through. But in the vast majority of cases, the result is not aesthetic improvement but mediocrity and monotony. Aestheticization today is an engine of misery. The discipline of aesthetics should resolutely criticize and counter …

Targeted Therapeutics And Novel Signaling Pathways In Non-Alcohol-Associated Fatty Liver/Steatohepatitis (Nafl/Nash), Dhriti Sinha, Nicholas R De Lay

The C-terminal domain (CTD) of the major endoribonuclease RNase E not only serves as a scaffold for the central RNA decay machinery in gram-negative bacteria but also mediates coupled degradation of small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) and their cognate target transcripts following RNA chaperone Hfq-facilitated sRNA-mRNA base pairing. Despite the crucial role of RNase E CTD in sRNA-dependent gene regulation, the contribution of particular residues within this domain in recruiting sRNAs and mRNAs upon base pairing remains unknown. We have previously shown that in Escherichia coli, the highly conserved 3'-5'-exoribonuclease polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase) paradoxically stabilizes sRNAs by limiting access of …

Prep Initiation In The Primary Care Setting: An Integrative Review, Tia L. Harper, Sharon Leslie

DNP and Student Works

Guideline-driven initiation of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a safe and effective strategy for reducing the incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Yet, PrEP initiation is generally inadequate allowing for a persistently high HIV prevalence in the United States. The aims of this integrative review were to identify and examine barriers contributing to suboptimal PrEP prescribing by primary care providers (PCPs), establish which practice-based intervention(s) are most effective in improving PCP PrEP prescribing practices, and guide implementation of such intervention(s) via hypothetical case study provision. Review objectives were intended to result in answering how implementing practice-based interventions affects PCP PrEP prescribing …

Improvements In Digital Holographic Microscopy, Raul Andres Castaneda Quintero Nov 2022

Improvements In Digital Holographic Microscopy, Raul Andres Castaneda Quintero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Ph.D. dissertation consists of developing a series of innovative computational methods for improving digital holographic microscopy (DHM). DHM systems are widely used in quantitative phase imaging for studying micrometer-size biological and non-biological samples. As any imaging technique, DHM systems have limitations that reduce their applicability. Current limitations in DHM systems are: i) the number of holograms (more than three holograms) required in slightly off-axis DHM systems to reconstruct the object phase information without applying complex computational algorithms; ii) the lack of an automatic and robust computation algorithm to compensate for the interference angle and reconstruct the object phase information …

The Impacts Of Sea Level Rise And The Law Of The Sea Convention: Facilitating Legal Certainty And Stability Of Maritime Zones And Boundaries, Davor Vidas, David Freestone

International Law Studies

It seems clear that the impacts of sea level rise were not contemplated by the drafters of the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention during UNCLOS III. Legal scholars began to identify these issues in the early 1990s but the establishment and work of the International Law Association (ILA) Committee on International Law and Sea Level Rise has drawn increased attention to the importance of this issue that is now being considered by a Study Group of the International Law Commission. This article traces the remarkable and swift evolution over the last decade of State practice on the interpretation of …

Reducing Teacher Turnover: Factors Of Teacher Retention Success, Karrie Pederson Rage

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

This post-positivist confirmatory correlational study examined four contributing factors found in the literature to influence teacher retention. The four factors were working conditions and school climate; administrative support and leadership practices; teacher self-efficacy; and the COVID-19 pandemic. The researcher developed two questionnaires (i.e., Teacher Retention Questionnaire for Teachers and Teacher Retention Questionnaire for Administrators) to gather the data for the study. A total of 324 teachers (30.39% return rate) and 26 administrators (50% return rate) from an urban Midwest P-12+ public school district participated in this study and anonymity was assured. Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory and Self-Efficacy Theory were used …

Non-Charismatic Waterbodies And Ecosystem Disservices: Mine Pit Lakes Are Underrepresented In The Literature, Rachele Bernasconi, Mark A. Lund, Melanie L. Blanchette

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Pit lakes are one of the greatest legacies of open-cut mining. Despite the potential hazards of these lakes, they represent newly formed ecosystems with great scientific and ecological potential. Although thousands of pit lakes occur on every inhabited continent, with more being created, the microbial ecology of pit lakes is relatively under-researched. We evaluated the current state of microbial research in pit lakes by performing a Web of Science search and creating a literature database. Study lakes were categorized according to location and water quality (pH and conductivity) which is a key community and environmental concern. Research technology employed in …

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

People with diabetic foot frequently exhibit gait and balance dysfunction. Recent advances in wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) enable to assess some of the gait and balance dysfunction associated with diabetic foot (i.e., digital biomarkers of gait and balance). However, there is no review to inform digital biomarkers of gait and balance dysfunction related to diabetic foot, measurable by wearable IMUs (e.g., what gait and balance parameters can wearable IMUs collect? Are the measurements repeatable?). Accordingly, we conducted a web-based, mini review using PubMed. Our search was limited to human subjects and English-written papers published in peer-reviewed journals. We identified …

Computers And The Moral Imagination, James Addington

Augsburg Honors Review

In this paper I want to look more closely at the relationship between new tools and historical challenges that threaten social well being and see human responses. My focus will be the technology which has come to symbolize, most characteristically, the last third of the twentieth century: computer technology. In order to discuss the impact of this I technology and its application to present challenges, it will be necessary to explore briefly some secondary themes: 1) the common sense of our age; 2) the meaning of freedom and authentic selfhood; 3) social contradiction and the moral imagination; and, one of …

An Analysis Of Shylock In The Merchant Of Venice, Mark Muhich

Augsburg Honors Review

Because he is Jewish and a shrewd businessman, the Venetians consider him to be an outsider in their cofiununity, but his isolation from the community mav be his way of protecting his Jewishneis. In other words, Shylock fears that non-business interactions with Christians will damage the pride he has in his religion because all the Christians ridicule him. Because he mocks the Christians in Venice, most literary critics believe that Shylock is a literary villain. H. B. Charlton says that Shylock is often interpreted as "an inhuman scoundrel whose diabolical cunning is bent on gratifying a satanic lust for Christian …

Heroine Of The Peripheral: An Exploration Of Feminism And Anti-Feminism In The Poetry Of Sylvia Plath, Devoney Looser Nov 2022

Heroine Of The Peripheral: An Exploration Of Feminism And Anti-Feminism In The Poetry Of Sylvia Plath, Devoney Looser

Augsburg Honors Review

Recognizing that there are many legitimate ways to view Plath's work, this study doesn't claim a definitive reading or even a glimpse into the 'real' Sylvia Plath. Instead, the following exploration will focus on feminist and anti-feminist renderings of motherhood in Plath's Crosstng the Water, Ariel, and Winter Trees. This study doesn't set out to prove or disprove these labels as they relate to Plath either. My intention is not to make value judgments about various aspects of the poetry but rather to highlight the contradictions and the co-existence of feminist and anti-feminist qualities in the text.
