Currently, there are no treatments that ameliorate cardiac cell death, the underlying basis of cardiovascular disease. An unexplored cell type in cardiac regeneration is cardiac Purkinje cells; specialized cells from the cardiac conduction system (CCS) responsible for propagating electrical signals. Purkinje cells have tremendous potential as a regenerative treatment because they may intrinsically integrate with the CCS of a recipient myocardium, resulting in more efficient electrical conduction in diseased hearts. This study is the first to demonstrate an effective protocol for the direct reprogramming of human cardiomyocytes into cardiac Purkinje-like cells using small molecules. The cells generated were genetically and …

Climate Action And Indigenous Land Relations: A Case Study In Nagaland, Northeastern India, Osensang Pongen Nov 2022

Climate Action And Indigenous Land Relations: A Case Study In Nagaland, Northeastern India, Osensang Pongen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research grew out of my interest in the implications of climate action, especially its effects in natural-resource-rich peripheral regions like my home state of Nagaland. This study will be of interest to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the ways in which global ecodevelopment programs expand and mutate at the micro-scales in Indigenous communities. This includes structural transformations to their Indigenous socio-economic and political lifeworlds, their cosmologies, and their affective relations with their ancestral lands and environment. More broadly, the study draws attention to the growing challenges confronting Indigenous peoples in the Global South who are being seduced by …

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) share genetic risk factors, yet patients display differential levels of cognitive impairment. We hypothesized a genome-transcriptome-functional connectivity (frontoparietal)-cognition pathway linked to SZ-versus-BD differences, and conducted a multiscale study to delineate this pathway.

STUDY DESIGNS: Large genome-wide studies provided single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) conferring more risk for SZ than BD, and we identified their regulated genes, namely SZ-biased SNPs and genes. We then (a) computed the polygenic risk score for SZ (PRSSZ) of SZ-biased SNPs and examined its associations with imaging-based frontoparietal functional connectivity (FC) and cognitive performances; (b) examined the spatial …

“An Attractive And Varied Repertoire”: The Guitar Revival Of 1860–1900 And Victorian Song, Christopher Page Nov 2022

“An Attractive And Varied Repertoire”: The Guitar Revival Of 1860–1900 And Victorian Song, Christopher Page

Soundboard Scholar

Most modern histories of the classical guitar are devoted to solo playing. They therefore forego a different kind of history based upon the guitar used as an accompaniment for a singer. This article explores how that alternative history might be framed with reference to England during the long reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901). This is the ideal laboratory for such an experiment, not least because the compositions of Catharina Pratten (1824–1895), the most influential guitar player of the day, are often thought to reveal a late-Victorian public with little interest in the guitar as a solo resource. Yet the newspaper …

Democratic Renewal And The Civil Jury, Richard L. Jolly, Valerie P. Hans, Robert S. Peck Nov 2022

Democratic Renewal And The Civil Jury, Richard L. Jolly, Valerie P. Hans, Robert S. Peck

Georgia Law Review

The United States is in a period of democratic decline. Waning commitment to principles of self-governance throughout the polity necessitates urgent action to revitalize the Republic. The civil jury offers an often-overlooked avenue for such democratic renewal. Welcoming laypeople into the courthouse and deputizing them as constitutional actors demonstrates a profound faith in representative governance and results in wide-reaching and pronounced sociopolitical and administrative benefits. The Seventh Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and similar state provisions protect the rights of litigants to jury trials in most circumstances. But these promises have been hollowed over time through legal, political, and practical …

Making Lease Payments A Lessor Problem, Devin C. Berrigan Nov 2022

Making Lease Payments A Lessor Problem, Devin C. Berrigan

Georgia Law Review

The frustration of purpose doctrine is a contracts defense that has garnered increased interest since the COVID-19 pandemic’s initial wave. To manage this public health emergency, many governments have issued orders restricting the operation of businesses. These orders, while necessary, put commercial lessees in a bind once it came time to pay rent because these restrictions drastically cut their profits. Other frustrating events, like war and natural disasters, cause the same problems, yet the current frustration of purpose doctrine is too narrow to be practically helpful to these lessees. This Note examines the English and Canadian frustration doctrines and draws …

Is Your Socially Responsible Investment Fund Green Or Greedy? How A Standard Esg Disclosure Framework Can Inform Investors And Prevent Greenwashing, Cara Beth Musciano Nov 2022

Is Your Socially Responsible Investment Fund Green Or Greedy? How A Standard Esg Disclosure Framework Can Inform Investors And Prevent Greenwashing, Cara Beth Musciano

Georgia Law Review

As environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing exponentially increases, so does the level of inconsistent ESG disclosures, adding to investor confusion. Without any mandates for standardization, companies will continue disclosing their sustainability efforts without concrete facts behind their subjective claims in hopes that they will appear “greener” to investors. This practice—known as greenwashing—could become prevalent, resulting in capital intended for sustainable investments flowing toward harmful businesses investors sought to avoid. Regulators should develop a mandatory ESG disclosure framework to create accurate, reliable data and to prevent capital from being misallocated against investors’ genuine sustainable efforts. Some existing rules could hold …

Impact Of Solid State Roadway Lighting On Melatonin In Humans, Ronald B Gibbons, Rajaram Bhagavathula, Benjamin Warfield, George Brainard, John P Hanifin Nov 2022

Impact Of Solid State Roadway Lighting On Melatonin In Humans, Ronald B Gibbons, Rajaram Bhagavathula, Benjamin Warfield, George Brainard, John P Hanifin

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Introduction: In 2009, the World Health Organization identified vehicle crashes, both injury-related and fatal, as a public health hazard. Roadway lighting has long been used to reduce crashes and improve the safety of all road users. Ocular light exposure at night can suppress melatonin levels in humans. At sufficient light levels, all visible light wavelengths can elicit this response, but melatonin suppression is maximally sensitive to visible short wavelength light. With the conversion of roadway lighting to solid state sources that have a greater short wavelength spectrum than traditional sources, there is a potential negative health impact through suppressed melatonin …

From Digital Commons To Alma/Primo: Expanding Readership For Doctor Of Nursing Practice Projects, Sara Hoover

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

In 2017 the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library partnered with The George Washington University School of Nursing to create a permanent digital archive for their Doctor of Nursing Practice project collection in our instance of Digital Commons. DNP projects are a unique type of content because they provide important research about nursing practices, but often go unpublished elsewhere. The GW DNP collection now contains over 120 items that have been downloaded over 95,000 times and therefore we were eager to explore additional avenues for disseminating this content beyond our IR and its subsequent indexing platforms. In 2018 our library migrated to …

The Principle Of Resulting Trust Under The English And Sudanese Legislations: A Comparative Study, Hafiz Jaafar Ibrahim Dr.

مجلة جامعة الإمارات للبحوث القانونية UAEU LAW JOURNAL

This study sheds light on the subject of the resulting trust and its role in restoring the title of real property by reviewing the legal principles and jurisprudence of Anglo-Saxon system, for which English law is basis. The problem of this study focused on the nominal registration of a property in the name of a person, the legal system recognizes the ownership of the person whose name appears as registered owner of the real estate. Not surprisingly, the real estate registry record is considered an inclusive evidence for what it includes, and it is not permissible for all challenge it …

The Perceived Impact Of Project-Based Learning (Pbl) On Middle School Students’ Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Identity And Engagement, Jonathan Olivera Nov 2022

The Perceived Impact Of Project-Based Learning (Pbl) On Middle School Students’ Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Identity And Engagement, Jonathan Olivera

Theses and Dissertations

Despite multiple calls to action, the United States educational system is not producing enough viable contributors in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These fields continue to grow, and the STEM workforce continues to expand. However, the pool of citizens prepared to enter these professions is not keeping up with the demand. Part of this issue can be attributed to a diminishing interest in STEM by students, particularly during their identity forming adolescent years. Active learning strategies have proven successful in preventing this decline with project-based learning (PBL) being one of the most successful active learning strategies. …

Palliative Care Services On An Adult Inpatient Oncology Unit, Heather E. Barger Nov 2022

Palliative Care Services On An Adult Inpatient Oncology Unit, Heather E. Barger

Dissertations

Abstract

Problem: Palliative care (PC) services are widely underutilized for patients with cancer, partly due to the shortage of PC specialists. Additionally, many Americans have not filled out advance directive (AD) paperwork which is commonly addressed in PC. In the absence of an AD, cancer patients are at risk of receiving undesired aggressive treatments in the event they are unable to make decisions independently.

Methods: This quality improvement pilot initiative utilized a descriptive observational design to evaluate the number of ADs documented in the electronic health record (EHR) on an inpatient oncology unit. A retrospective EHR review was used to …

Where Are The Black Teachers? There Should Be More To Make It Even, Harolyn Harris Nov 2022

Where Are The Black Teachers? There Should Be More To Make It Even, Harolyn Harris

Dissertations

For years, Black teachers lived and worked in the communities that they served. I was one of those teachers who lived and worked in my community, but I noticed that there were not many of us. As a Black woman, mother and teacher, I was fully aware of the numbers of Black teachers declining. I wanted to know why.

In this study, I utilized my experience as a Black student, a Black teacher, and a Black administrator to reflect my feelings. I used Critical Race Theory as the theoretical lens on my stories using autoethnography as the research method. I …

A Phenomenological Study Of Secondary Teachers’ Experiences With A Mandated Transition To And From Synchronous Online Instruction, Susan P. Lyman Nov 2022

A Phenomenological Study Of Secondary Teachers’ Experiences With A Mandated Transition To And From Synchronous Online Instruction, Susan P. Lyman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand secondary teachers’ experiences with an unexpected transition between in-person teaching and virtual modalities for secondary educators in New York public schools. The theory that guided this study was Schlossberg’s transition theory which provided a lens through which to understand the shared experiences of making an unplanned transition from face-to-face teaching to online platforms. The study was qualitative and followed a phenomenological research design. The setting for this study was multiple public school districts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island, New York. The sample was 10 secondary public school teachers …

Core Values: A Phenomenological Study Of Spiritual Formation Through The Longevity Of Values Gained From Women's Ministry, Belinda Copeland Nov 2022

Core Values: A Phenomenological Study Of Spiritual Formation Through The Longevity Of Values Gained From Women's Ministry, Belinda Copeland

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

While many churches today have moved away from the practice of church-based women’s ministries, other churches still see their value and continue their dedication to providing specifically tailored programs to address the spiritual formation in women. The Bible reminds us in Hebrews 10:25 that we are not to forsake “the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some…” (King James Bible, 1769/2017, Heb. 10:25). However, some churches desire to assemble specific ministries separately, women from men. This study attempted to identify values in the spiritual formation of women and explored whether those values are still helpful in the spiritual …

Barriers In Motivation To Pursue A Stem Career Among Students From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Daniel Khanh Lieu

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds that chose to pursue a career in STEM at STEM High School. For the purposes of this study, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds were generally defined as students that qualify for the free and reduced lunch program and STEM careers would be generally defined as any careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. The theory that guided this study was Vroom’s expectancy-value theory, which discusses how the individual perceived the outcome to occur (expectancy) and the worth of the outcome on …

Childhood Adversities And The Impact On Development, Karey Womack Dulaney Nov 2022

Childhood Adversities And The Impact On Development, Karey Womack Dulaney

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Experiences in life are crucial in determining how one’s development will progress throughout their lifespan, with many of the factors occurring in early childhood. The factors include but are not limited to adversities experienced at an early age, toxic stress, and childhood trauma. Childhood adversities can impact a child’s cognitive development and biological systems. Children living in adverse situations are at a greater risk of not reaching their full developmental potential in life. Although previous research and literature discuss and demonstrate the cruciality of early childhood interventions to mitigate adverse childhood experiences, gaps in the research exist for individual interventions, …

Teachers’ Experiences On Adaptations To Instructional Practices On The Transition To The Common Core State Standards: A Phenomenological Study, Elsie Fabiola Riveiro Torres

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenology study was to discover the experiences that elementary teachers have had regarding changes or adaptations to their instructional practices in the transition to the implementation to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The central research question that guided the study was based on the purpose of the study: What are the experiences that elementary teachers have had regarding changes or adaptations to their instructional practices in the transition to the implementation to the CCSS? Transcendental phenomenology was the methodological approach in this investigation because the goal was to describe the meanings of the experiences …

The Impact Of Structured Orientation On Role Transition And Turnover Intentions Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Nadege Jules

Dissertations

The first year of transitioning from being an expert nurse to embracing the role as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is challenging. The literature identifies a gap in APRNs transition to practice support in the new role. The impact of structured orientation on role transition and job turnover intentions of novice Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in their first APRN position is warranted and have not been addressed.

The purpose of this nonexperimental, correlational study was to investigate the impact of structured orientation on role transition and job turnover intentions of novice Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in the United States …

Bearing Witness To Human Value: Race Relations Under The Apartheid Regime In Select Works Of Athol Fugard, Cameron Alex Yngsdal Nov 2022

Bearing Witness To Human Value: Race Relations Under The Apartheid Regime In Select Works Of Athol Fugard, Cameron Alex Yngsdal

Masters Theses

South African white playwright Athol Fugard utilized his theatrical expertise to articulate a socially conscious voice of protest against the oppressive systems implemented by the South African Apartheid government. Because of his writing taking place in the particularized Apartheid-specific setting, where he, as a member of the white minority, he was afforded the freedoms and opportunities which were not offered to members of non-white races. Thus, although Fugard’s race offered him opportunities to protest Apartheid, it brought the possibility of incorrectly portraying non-white South Africans. This incorrect portrayal, known as the “white savior complex,” wherein a white figure rescues the …

Domain Knowledge As Motion-Aware Inductive Bias For Deep Video Synthesis: Two Case Studies, Long Mai Nov 2022

Domain Knowledge As Motion-Aware Inductive Bias For Deep Video Synthesis: Two Case Studies, Long Mai

Dissertations and Theses

Deep neural networks have been part of many breakthroughs in computer graphics and vision research. In the context of visual content synthesis, deep learning models have achieved impressive performance in the image domain. However, adapting the successes of image synthesis models to the video domain has been difficult, arguably due to the lack of sufficiently strong inductive biases that encourage the models to capture the temporal-dynamic nature of video data. Inductive bias refers to the prior knowledge incorporated into the learning models to explicitly drive the learning process toward the solutions that capture meaningful structures from data, which is critical …

Ovid’S Casebook: The Literary Jurisprudence Of The Metamorphoses, Ian Ward Nov 2022

Ovid’S Casebook: The Literary Jurisprudence Of The Metamorphoses, Ian Ward

New England Classical Journal

Roman literature has, thus far, assumed a relatively modest place in the canon of literary jurisprudence. Yet it presents a rich resource for scholars interested, not just in Roman law, but in law today. This article will revisit Ovid’s Metamorphoses, a text which has continued to fascinate literary scholars since the Renaissance. It will suggest that Metamorphoses can be read as a ‘casebook’ in Roman law, and more especially the law relating to marriage and sexuality. At the same time, it will be argued that Ovid had a rather greater argument to make in regard to the broader sweep of …
