Recurrent Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis In The Emergency Department: A Case Report, Adeola A Kosoko, Diego Craik Tobar
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
INTRODUCTION: Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) is a common cause of infant vomiting. Emergency department (ED) diagnosis is usually made by pyloric ultrasound and treated by pyloromyotomy.
CASE REPORT: An eight-week-old boy with a history of IHPS about six weeks status post pyloromyotomy presented to the ED with vomiting and failure to thrive, and a critically narrowed pylorus was identified by ultrasound. An upper gastrointestinal series confirmed recurrent pyloric stenosis, necessitating another pyloromyotomy.
CONCLUSION: Prolonged vomiting after pyloromyotomy should be concerning for recurrent IHPS. Upper gastrointestinal series should augment ultrasound to diagnose recurrent IHPS and determine whether a second pyloromyotomy …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Optical molecular imaging and image-guided theranostics benefit from special and specific imaging agents, for which aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have been regarded as good candidates in many biomedical applications. They display a large Stokes shift, high quantum yield, good biocompatibility, and resistance to photobleaching. Neurological diseases are becoming a substantial burden on individuals and society that affect over 50 million people worldwide. It is urgently needed to explore in more detail the brain structure and function, learn more about pathological processes of neurological diseases, and develop more efficient approaches for theranostics. Many AIEgens have been successfully designed, synthesized, and further …

Seeing The World Through Their Eyes: The Impact Of Place Attachment On Teachers' Understanding Of Worldviews, Kathleen Murray
Seeing The World Through Their Eyes: The Impact Of Place Attachment On Teachers' Understanding Of Worldviews, Kathleen Murray
Theses & Dissertations
Over the past 20 years, Long Island, New York, has seen an increase in linguistic and racial diversity within its schools. The growth in linguistic diversity has brought with it an increase in English language learners (ELLs), representing almost a 50% increase since 2012. As the ELL population has grown, so has the achievement gap between ELLs and their non-ELL peers. The current teaching staff on Long Island does not match the diversity of its student population. Prior research has shown that the cultural mismatch between the teachers and students is one contributing factor to the aforementioned achievement gap. In …
Chronic Kidney Disease Patients' Experiences In The Decision Making Process: The Relationship Between Personal Characteristics And Decisional Self-Efficacy On Decisional Conflict And The Dialysis Decision In Patients Who Participated In Shared Decision Making, Lincy Jojan
Theses & Dissertations
Patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) experience a complex and stressful decision making when comes to dialysis modality selection. There are pros and cons to both hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD). Patients are often uncertain as to which one is the best modality for them. This decisional conflict increases the likelihood of making a decision that is not based on the patient’s values or preferences and may result in undesirable post-decisional consequences. Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD) patients' experiences regarding their decision making process in selecting a dialysis modality. The …

Stack Overflow (SO) provides informal documentation for APIs in response to questions that express API related developer needs. Navigating the information available on SO and getting information related to a particular API and need is challenging due to the vast amount of questions and answers and the tag-driven structure of SO. In this paper we focus on identifying and classifying fine-grained developer needs expressed in sentences of API-related SO questions, as well as the specific information types used to express such needs, and the different roles APIs play in these questions and their answers. We derive a taxonomy, complementing existing …
Targeted Sanctions Against Human Rights Violators: A Question Of Efficacy, Jennifer F. Dillard
Targeted Sanctions Against Human Rights Violators: A Question Of Efficacy, Jennifer F. Dillard
Honors College Theses
Human rights violations occur all too frequently, with authoritarian regimes at the forefront of abuses. Countries that respect human rights engage in various initiatives, one such example being targeted sanctions to try and stem the tide of human suffering at the hands of unscrupulous dictators. Currently, Uyghurs are victims of genocide in China, dissidents in countries such as Russia and Belarus are falsely imprisoned, and individuals in Saudi Arabia are persecuted and imprisoned solely for advocating for freedom of speech and equality for women. Each of these countries have been the subject of sanctions. This paper seeks to answer the …

We propose VetSC, a novel UI-driven, program analysis guided model checking technique that can automatically extract contract semantics in DApps so as to enable targeted safety vetting. To facilitate model checking, we extract business model graphs from contract code that capture its intrinsic business and safety logic. To automatically determine what safety specifications to check, we retrieve textual semantics from DApp user interfaces. To exclude untrusted UI text, we also validate the UI-logic consistency and detect any discrepancies. We have implemented VetSC and applied it to 34 real-world DApps. Experiments have demonstrated that VetSC can accurately interpret smart contract code, …

The Past, Present, And Future Of China-Related Accounting Research, Qiang Cheng, Luzi Hail, Gwen Yu
The Past, Present, And Future Of China-Related Accounting Research, Qiang Cheng, Luzi Hail, Gwen Yu
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This discussion makes several observations regarding the past 25 years of China-related accounting research reviewed in Lennox and Wu (2022). First, we discuss factors of supply and demand that led to the rise of China-related studies and how this growth has contributed to the internationalization of accounting research. We note that the taxonomy of the literature by geographic region rather than topic or methodology is unusual and makes it difficult to formulate a common framework that would help organize the many contributions. Next, we distill distinct patterns in authorship, choice of topics, and asserted contributions of China-related studies. Studies are …

Introducing A Model For How Knowledge-Driven Agile Innovation Can Drive Digital Transformation In Firms, Lipika Bhattacharya, Clarence Goh, Gary Pan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Digital transformation often arises from the distribution of tasks among interdisciplinary teams of experts. One important factor that determines the success of digital transformation relates to an organization’s ability to innovate in an agile manner. In this article, we identify key drivers of digital transformation, which include organizational agility, knowledge management and innovation. Another crucial aspect of knowledge management relates to the coordination of knowledge. It is important for organizations to focus on knowledge coordination because the lack of coordination can dissuade them from meeting the demands for flexibility and speed during digital transformation, thereby negating the potential benefits from …

Family Still Matters: Human Social Motivation Across 42 Countries During A Global Pandemic, Cari M. Pick, Et. Al.
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The COVID-19 pandemic caused drastic social changes for many, including separation from friends and coworkers, enforced close contact with family, reductions in mobility, and a number of other health-related precautions. Here we assess the extent to which people’s evolutionarilyrelevant basic motivations and goals—their fundamental social motives—might have been affected. To address this question, we gathered data on these motives in 42 countries (N=15,915) in two waves, including 19 countries (N=10,907) for which data were gathered both before and during the pandemic (Pre-pandemic wave: 32 countries, N=8998; 3302 male, 5585 female; Mage=24.43, SD=7.91; Mid-pandemic wave: 29 countries, N=6917; 2249 male, 4218 …

Intensive Family Observations: A Methodological Guide, Annette Lareau, Aliya Hamid Rao
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
There is a dearth of methodological guidance on how to conduct participant observation in private spaces such as family homes. Yet, participant observations can provide deep and valuable data about family processes. This article draws on two ethnographic studies of family life in which researchers conduct in-depth interviews, recruit families, and ultimately enter the family as a quasi-stranger for daily observations lasting a fixed period (e.g., three weeks). We term this approach "intensive family observations." Here, we provide concrete methodological advice for this method, beginning with guidelines for recruitment and gaining consent. We also discuss logistics of conducting family observation …
The Privacy Of Hak-Shing William Tam: Imagining Asian Families In California’S Proposition 8, Justin Kh Tse
The Privacy Of Hak-Shing William Tam: Imagining Asian Families In California’S Proposition 8, Justin Kh Tse
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In terms of Asian Americans whose reputations have been popularly derided, the concerned parent activist Hak-Shing William Tam perhaps ranks among the top. Tam was a citizen proponent of California’s Proposition 8 in 2008 to amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage and became a hostile witness for the plaintiffs in the subsequent 2010 lawsuit to overturn the amendment, Perry v. Schwarzenegger. In this paper, I explore Tam’s claim to privacy in his understanding of these events, both in terms of his sexualized imagination of liberal civil society and his suffering from what he understood as violations of his …
Infrastructure's (Supra)Sacralizing Effects: Contesting Littoral Spaces Of Fishing, Faith, And Futurity Along Sri Lanka's Western Coastline, Orlando Woods
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper explores the ways in which infrastructural development can cause the sacred to become a source of political legitimacy, and sacred authority to become a politically charged construct. For resource-dependent communities, the ecological damage caused by infrastructural development can cause ostensibly profane issues to be imbued with sacred meaning and value. With sacralization comes the expectation that figures of sacred authority will campaign for justice on behalf of the communities that they represent. However, when the authority evoked comes from outside the boundaries of institutionalized religion, processes of suprasacralization come into play. By exploring infrastructure’s (supra)sacralizing effects, I demonstrate …

Does Trait Self-Esteem Serve As A Resilience Factor In Maintaining Affective Well-Being? Findings From Daily Diary Studies In Singapore And The United States, Matthew H. S. Ng, Verity Yu Qing Lua, Nadyanna M. Majeed, Andree Hartanto
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Research suggests that self-esteem could be a protective factor in stressful or unfavorable situations. However, little research has been done on the buffering role of self-esteem in the context of daily stressors on affective reactivity. Three daily diary studies (of which two were conducted in Singapore and one in the United States) were carried out to examine this relationship. In all three studies, trait self-esteem was measured at baseline. Subsequently, daily assessment was conducted on exposure to daily stressors, and positive and negative affect for seven to eight days. Multilevel modeling showed that trait self-esteem did not moderate the relationship …
Young Singaporeans Abroad And Their Misguided Sense Of Superiority Towards S-E Asia, Lily Kong
Young Singaporeans Abroad And Their Misguided Sense Of Superiority Towards S-E Asia, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In a commentary, SMU President and Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor of Social Sciences Lily Kong –whose research has focused over the decades on social and cultural change in Asian cities – discussed why young Singaporeans can have a misguided sense of superiority towards South-east Asia when they venture abroad. She explained how this could blind them to their neighbours’ hidden strengths. Prof Kong also shared that SMU has sought to actively vest in its students a sound appreciation of growth in Asia. To support this endeavour, the University is launching a series of overseas centres in selected South-east Asian …
Deliberate Errors Promote Meaningful Learning, Sarah Shi Hui Wong, Stephen Wee Hun Lim
Deliberate Errors Promote Meaningful Learning, Sarah Shi Hui Wong, Stephen Wee Hun Lim
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Our civilization recognizes that errors can be valuable learning opportunities, but for decades, they have widely been avoided or, at best, allowed to occur as serendipitous accidents. The present research tested whether greater learning success could paradoxically be achieved through making errors by intentional design, relative to traditional errorless learning methods. We show that deliberately committing and correcting errors even when one knows the correct answers enhances learning—a counterintuitive phenomenon that we termed the derring effect. Across two experiments (N = 160), learners engaged in open-book study of scientific expository texts and were then tested on their retention and higher-order …

Personal Comfort Models Based On A 6‐Month Experiment Using Environmental Parameters And Data From Wearables, Federico Tartarini, Stefano Schiavon, Matias Quintana, Clayton Miller
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Personal thermal comfort models are a paradigm shift in predicting how building occupants perceive their thermal environment. Previous work has critical limitations related to the length of the data collected and the diversity of spaces. This paper outlines a longitudinal field study comprising 20 participants who answered Right-Here-Right-Now surveys using a smartwatch for 180 days. We collected more than 1080 field-based surveys per participant. Surveys were matched with environmental and physiological measured variables collected indoors in their homes and offices. We then trained and tested seven machine learning models per participant to predict their thermal preferences. Participants indicated 58% of …
Cry Wolf, Olivia Claire Acosta
Cry Wolf, Olivia Claire Acosta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cry Wolf is a confessional poetry collection told in three sections about at-work stalking. This collection also alludes to the Brothers Grimm fairytale, The Little Red Riding Hood. The sections of Cry Wolf include “The Wolf,” which introduces the speaker’s discovery of work-related stalking. The second section, entitled “The Fur,” is where the speaker empowers themselves to file a Title IX report about this dilemma, and Red cloaks herself in the wolf’s skin. The final portion of the collection, entitled “Red’s Home,” gives the audience a view of the speaker's self-love as they maintain it through trauma. This section also …

IMPORTANCE: The Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)-Associated Stroke Causal Likelihood classification system combines information regarding noncardiac patient features (vascular risk factors, infarct topography) and PFO features (shunt size and presence of atrial septal aneurysm [ASA]) to classify patients into 3 validated categories of responsiveness to treatment with PFO closure. However, the distinctive associations of shunt size and ASA, alone and in combination, have not been completely delineated.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of PFO closure with stroke recurrence according to shunt size and/or the presence of an ASA.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Pooled individual patient data from 6 randomized clinical trials …

In this paper, an intelligent method for fault detection and classification for a microgrid (MG) was proposed. The idea was based on the combination of three computational tools: signal processing using the maximal overlap discrete wavelet packet transform (MODWPT), parameter optimization by the augmented Lagrangian particle swarm optimization (ALPSO), and machine learning using the support vector machine (SVM). The MODWPT was applied to preprocess half cycle of the post-fault current samples measured at both ends of feeders. The wavelet coefficients derived from the MODWPT were statistically evaluated using the mean, standard deviation, energy, skewness, kurtosis, logarithmic energy entropy, max, min, …

The current understanding on the oxygen transfer in activated sludge process is primarily developed based on two-phase systems, focusing only on oxygen transfer from air to water. However, this research demonstrates that activated sludge particles significantly impact oxygen transfer from air all the way to the microorganisms. Three bench-scale complete-mix activated sludge reactors, operated under the same influent loading and dissolved oxygen level but different solids retention times (SRTs), were used to develop oxygen transfer performance data as effects of different sludge property parameters. These reactors were also operated under batch modes to further validate the effect of nitrification reaction …
