INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) are heterogeneous malignancies that can arise at almost any anatomical site and are classified as biologically distinct well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NET) and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NEC). Current systemic therapies for advanced disease, including targeted therapies, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, are associated with limited duration of response. New therapeutic targets are needed. One promising target is delta-like ligand 3 (DLL3), an inhibitory ligand of the Notch receptor whose overexpression on the surface of NEN is associated with tumorigenesis.

METHODS: This article is a narrative review that highlights the role of DLL3 in NEN progression and prognosis, the …

Zebras Of All Stripes Repel Biting Flies At Close Range, Kaia J. Tombak, Andrew S. Gersick, Lily V. Reisinger, Brenda Larison, Daniel I. Rubenstein

Publications and Research

The best-supported hypothesis for why zebras have stripes is that stripes repel biting flies. While this effect is well-established, the mechanism behind it remains elusive. Myriad hypotheses have been suggested, but few experiments have helped narrow the field of possible explanations. In addition, the complex visual features of real zebra pelage and the natural range of stripe widths have been largely left out of experimental designs. In paired-choice field experiments in a Kenyan savannah, we found that hungry Stomoxys flies released in an enclosure strongly preferred to land on uniform tan impala pelts over striped zebra pelts but exhibited no …

BACKGROUND: The safety, reactogenicity, immunogenicity, and efficacy of the mRNA-1273 coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine in young children are unknown.

METHODS: Part 1 of this ongoing phase 2-3 trial was open label for dose selection; part 2 was an observer-blinded, placebo-controlled evaluation of the selected dose. In part 2, we randomly assigned young children (6 months to 5 years of age) in a 3:1 ratio to receive two 25-μg injections of mRNA-1273 or placebo, administered 28 days apart. The primary objectives were to evaluate the safety and reactogenicity of the vaccine and to determine whether the immune response in these …

Survey Tools For Measuring Research Or Evidence‐Based Practice Constructs In Dietetics: A Narrative Review, Rosa K. Hand

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Exact quantification of research conducted by dietitians and tracking the effectiveness of interventions or training programs to increase either evidence-based practice (EBP) or research behaviours have been hampered by the variety of tools used to measure these constructs. Methods: In this narrative review, we identified and classified the various tools previously used to measure constructs related to research and/or EBP in the dietetics profession, and to summarise estimates of the constructs measured. Results: We identified and classified 15 scored tools that had been used at least once in the dietetics profession and extracted tool parameter estimates from 22 resulting …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Introduction: Many acutely ill children in low- and middle-income settings have a high risk of mortality both during and after hospitalisation despite guideline-based care. Understanding the biological mechanisms underpinning mortality may suggest optimal pathways to target for interventions to further reduce mortality. The Childhood Acute Illness and Nutrition (CHAIN) Network ( www.chainnnetwork.org) Nested Case-Cohort Study (CNCC) aims to investigate biological mechanisms leading to inpatient and post-discharge mortality through an integrated multi-omic approach.
Methods and analysis; The CNCC comprises a subset of participants from the CHAIN cohort (1278/3101 hospitalised participants, including 350 children who died and 658 survivors, and …

The Reexamination Of Location Choices For Pyramids Complexes From The Third Through The Sixth Dynasties, Gregory Allen Viessman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation is the first overview of location choices for Early Dynastic Period (2900-2545 B.C.E) and Old Kingdom (2543-2118 B.C.E) pyramid complexes since Miroslav Bárta’s 2005 article “Location of the Old Kingdom Pyramids in Egypt.” The factors that went into the decision of Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom pharaohs for the locations of their pyramid complexes is based on a variety of geological, religious, and historical contexts. An overview and analysis of the geology of the seventy-one-kilometer stretch of pyramid complexes from Abu Rawash to Meidum will be conducted. Additionally, the overall history of each site prior to the construction …

Glitched Rhetorics: Online Deliberation Of New Technology, Adam Hughes Nov 2022

Glitched Rhetorics: Online Deliberation Of New Technology, Adam Hughes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines public deliberation on the social media site reddit regarding two controversial technologies: Alexa and Bitcoin. Such vernacular deliberation of prominent new technologies is widespread online and increasingly significant—with Alexa and Bitcoin generating numerous controversies throughout the 2010s & early 2020s—yet understudied by rhetoric and media scholars. Arguments for and against the technologies consistently emerge, and so I ask: What are the terms, patterns, and logics in the binarized reddit deliberations of emergent technology? There is also an alternative rhetorical practice of those conflicted and ambivalent, yet not absent from the deliberations. I name it glitching, a paleologism …

Libraries And The Problem Of Digital Humanities Discovery, Roxanne Shirazi Nov 2022

Libraries And The Problem Of Digital Humanities Discovery, Roxanne Shirazi

Publications and Research

Why is it so hard to find digital humanities projects? While digital humanities librarians emphasize their crucial role in producing DH work as partners in developing, sustaining, and preserving digital resources, scant attention is paid to the library’s role in resource description and discovery, their contribution to disciplinary formation that goes beyond technology stacks and campus service models. This chapter explores the implications of the producer/creator model of digital humanities librarianship and imagines alternatives in which the problem of DH discovery is understood as a broader issue for academic libraries curating open access digital scholarship. By attending to the discovery …

Patient Experience Journal

Tell Me More® (TMM) is a medical student-driven initiative to build rapport between patients, students, and the healthcare team through patient interviews and collaboratively created posters. Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) often experience impaired communication with providers. TMM has the potential to address the loss of patient-centered dialogue in interpreter-mediated communications. In this exploratory pilot study, we aimed to include LEP patients in TMM by using medical interpreter phones (MIPs) at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Northwell Health. Our objectives were to: (1) evaluate the feasibility of this approach, (2) compare TMM engagement between LEP and English-speaking (ES) patients, …

Going From An Academic Medical Center To A Community Hospital: Patient Experiences With Transfers, Alexander Kazberouk, Nicole Boyd, Sandra Oreper, Michael Chang, James D. Harrison, Priya A. Prasad, Ari Hoffman

Patient Experience Journal

Academic medical centers (AMCs) often operate at or near full capacity, which leads to delays in care while smaller community hospitals may have excess capacity. To address this issue and to match patient needs to care acuity, patients may be transferred from an AMC emergency department for direct admission to a community hospital. We aimed to explore the experiences and perspectives of patients who were transferred. We randomly selected patients transferred between February 2019 and February 2020. We conducted structured thirty-minute interviews containing fixed response and open-ended questions focusing on the transfer rationale and experience, care quality, and patient financial …

Patient Experience Journal

Telemedicine approaches provide many benefits to patients across both primary and specialty care. Patient acceptance is imperative to successful telemedicine implementation. As telemedicine utilization continues to surge, it is imperative that healthcare organizations have a method for evaluating the patient experience with these types of visits. Previous studies on experience with telemedicine have focused on smaller patient populations with narrow inclusion criteria and limited geographical reach. This research described how patients’ satisfaction with video telemedicine-based visits varied based on patient characteristics and how they compare with in-person visits. We obtained and analyzed results from standardized patient experience surveys to compare …

The Impact Of Follow-Up Calls After A Pediatric Emergency Department Visit, Joseph R. Mijares Iii, Sephora Morrison Nov 2022

The Impact Of Follow-Up Calls After A Pediatric Emergency Department Visit, Joseph R. Mijares Iii, Sephora Morrison

Patient Experience Journal

Pediatric emergency department (ED) visits can be a stressful time for patients and their caregivers. This high stress environment can lead to questions and needed clarifications post-discharge. We implemented a post-discharge callback system to resolve these concerns for a focused subset of patients who historically have provided the most negative comment feedback on ED patient experience surveys. We hypothesized that comment types would shift to more positive than negative and the themes of the comments received would change. We developed a discharge callback process that focused on patients who were triaged as ESI level 4 during their emergency department visit. …

Patient Experience Journal

Patient and family advisory councils (PFACs) advance patient- and family-centered care within children’s hospitals but may not reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. We sought to assess PFAC diversity among children’s hospitals and explore barriers, drivers, and enablers of recruitment, retention, and engagement of patient and family advisors (PFAs) with diverse perspectives and backgrounds. We performed a mixed methods study to evaluate structure, composition, recruitment, and engagement strategies of children’s hospital PFACs. Individuals likely to have knowledge of or responsibility for PFACs at each Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) member hospital were asked to complete an electronic questionnaire. A …
