Deep Learning‑Based Framework For Slide‑Based Histopathological Image Analysis, Sai Kosaraju, Jeongyeon Park, Hyun Lee, Jung Wook Yang, Mingon Kang Nov 2022

Deep Learning‑Based Framework For Slide‑Based Histopathological Image Analysis, Sai Kosaraju, Jeongyeon Park, Hyun Lee, Jung Wook Yang, Mingon Kang

Computer Science Faculty Research

Digital pathology coupled with advanced machine learning (e.g., deep learning) has been changing the paradigm of whole-slide histopathological images (WSIs) analysis. Major applications in digital pathology using machine learning include automatic cancer classification, survival analysis, and subtyping from pathological images. While most pathological image analyses are based on patch-wise processing due to the extremely large size of histopathology images, there are several applications that predict a single clinical outcome or perform pathological diagnosis per slide (e.g., cancer classification, survival analysis). However, current slide-based analyses are task-dependent, and a general framework of slide-based analysis in WSI has been seldom investigated. We …

Imposter Participants: Overcoming Methodological Challenges Related To Balancing Participant Privacy With Data Quality When Using Online Recruitment And Data Collection, Jacqueline M. Roehl Ph.D., Darci J. Harland Ph.D. Nov 2022

Imposter Participants: Overcoming Methodological Challenges Related To Balancing Participant Privacy With Data Quality When Using Online Recruitment And Data Collection, Jacqueline M. Roehl Ph.D., Darci J. Harland Ph.D.

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we describe the lessons learned when untrustworthy participants were included in a qualitative interview study. In online research, participants can more easily misrepresent their identity and volunteer for studies even if they do not meet inclusion criteria. The term “imposter participant” refers to dishonest participants who completely fake their identities or simply exaggerate their experiences to participate in qualitative studies. Untrustworthy participants are a threat to data quality, yet little has been published on how qualitative researchers should prevent and handle this unique methodological challenge. In this paper, we provide a detailed account of how specific issues …

Volatile chemical products (VCPs) and other non-combustion-related sources have become important for urban air quality, and bottom-up calculations report emissions of a variety of functionalized compounds that remain understudied and uncertain in emissions estimates. Using a new instrumental configuration, we present online measurements of oxygenated organic compounds in a US megacity over a 10 d wintertime sampling period, when biogenic sources and photochemistry were less active. Measurements were conducted at a rooftop observatory in upper Manhattan, New York City, USA using a Vocus chemical ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer, with ammonium (NH as the reagent ion operating at 1 Hz. The …

Mi Familia Es Mi Fuerza, Yvonne Borkowski

Theses & Dissertations

Latinx parents have been unfairly blamed for their child’s negative educational outcomes due to how they choose to be involved in their child’s education. School expectations of parent involvement typically follow the Epstein Model, which is aligned with traditional, White, middle-class involvement such as fundraising and bake sales. Meanwhile, Latinx, low-income parents often perceive their involvement as shaping their child’s behavior at home and teaching them about moral values. This qualitative case study examines how five Latinx parents in a predominantly Latinx school district on Long Island defined school-based and home-based parent involvement, advocated for their children, as well as …

A Case Study Of Parentschool Relationships: How Spanish-Speaking Latino Parents Of Elementary Multilingual Learners Perceive Parental Involvement In Schools, Ingrid Corpuz

Theses & Dissertations

This study examined how Spanish-speaking Latino parents of multilingual learners (MLs) perceived their participation in the school community and their role in the educational process of their children. It explored several factors that can influence the involvement of Spanish-speaking parents in their children's education. Social capital, cultural capital, and social learning theories guided this study to provide a deeper understanding of the parental involvement of Spanishspeaking Latino parents in schools. Ten participating parents shared their experiences and described their view of parental involvement in their children’s school. This study concluded that Spanish-speaking Latino parents displayed characteristics of highly involved parents, …

Contextual Coding In Qualitative Research Involving Participants With Diverse Sociocultural Backgrounds, Ahtisham Younas, Angela Cuoco, Ercole Vellone, Sergi Fàbregues, Elsa Lucia Escalante Barrios, Angela Durante Nov 2022

Contextual Coding In Qualitative Research Involving Participants With Diverse Sociocultural Backgrounds, Ahtisham Younas, Angela Cuoco, Ercole Vellone, Sergi Fàbregues, Elsa Lucia Escalante Barrios, Angela Durante

The Qualitative Report

Understanding participants’ perspectives in qualitative research is contingent on unravelling the essential meaning of their speech. When data are collected in native language and translated into English language, the underlying sociocultural meaning of participants’ speech can be missed. This paper discusses a new contextual coding approach and illustrates its application in research. The technique was used in a phenomenological study in Pakistan and a mixed methods study in Europe. Contextual coding entails a preliminary coding stage involving data reading in native language, choosing socially and culturally relevant words and phrases, and developing preliminary codes. The concluding coding stage focuses on …

Tau Kinetics In Alzheimer's Disease, Daniel B. Hier, Sima Azizi, Matthew S. Thimgan, Donald C. Wunsch

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Cytoskeletal Protein Tau is Implicated in the Pathogenesis of Alzheimer's Disease Which is Characterized by Intra-Neuronal Neurofibrillary Tangles Containing Abnormally Phosphorylated Insoluble Tau. Levels of Soluble Tau Are Elevated in the Brain, the CSF, and the Plasma of Patients with Alzheimer's Disease. to Better Understand the Causes of These Elevated Levels of Tau, We Propose a Three-Compartment Kinetic Model (Brain, CSF, and Plasma). the Model Assumes that the Synthesis of Tau Follows Zero-Order Kinetics (Uncorrelated with Compartmental Tau Levels) and that the Release, Absorption, and Clearance of Tau is Governed by First-Order Kinetics (Linearly Related to Compartmental Tau Levels). …

Pathway To Post Operative Pain Management, Donna Wachowski, Rena James, Joanna Botello-Lynch Nov 2022

Pathway To Post Operative Pain Management, Donna Wachowski, Rena James, Joanna Botello-Lynch

Nursing

Background/Introduction: Fear and anxiety can affect the patient’s level of pain. Pain can be well managed by educating patients preoperatively and will reduce the effects of fear and anxiety.

Local problem: The evaluation and treatment of our patient’s post-operative pain is a challenge presented to us daily in Outpatient Surgery. We discovered that patients needed better education on using the pain scale. Dugdale (2019) notes that education helps the patient to have a bigger role in their care. It also supports the growing movement toward patient- and family- centered care.

Method: In addition to education on using the pain scale, …

Differing Perspectives: Research On Reasons For Heart Failure Readmission, Sara Marzinski, Diane Melrose, Mary Hook

Nursing

Background/Introduction: Heart failure is a staggering clinical and public health problem with a trajectory often associated with readmission. Previous research suggests that patients and clinicians have different perspectives about causes and preventability of readmission, with findings focused on subjective reports without clinical context.

Purpose: To gather patient, caregiver, nurse, and physician subjective reason(s) for 30-day heart failure readmission. To evaluate responses in context with clinical data to gain insights to improve care.

Method: A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used including brief investigator-designed guided interviews and an electronic health record chart review to gather contextual information from both hospital …

Towards Precision Audiology: Perceptual Profiles & Their Relation To Ecologically Valid Communication Assessments, Dana Cherri Nov 2022

Towards Precision Audiology: Perceptual Profiles & Their Relation To Ecologically Valid Communication Assessments, Dana Cherri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Living in a sonic world, a person with hearing loss experiences difficulty in communicating with others. One of the reasons why some people with hearing loss do not wear hearing aids (HAs) is limited perceived benefit, which may result from HAs that are not fit using “best practices” or because the best practices fail to address individual difficulties experienced by the listener. The typical audiogram provides information regarding audibility as a function of frequency and is used to establish degree, type, and configuration of hearing loss, but does not measure the ability of an individual to process various components of …

Is Neuro-Symbolic Ai Meeting Its Promises In Natural Language Processing? A Structured Review, Kyle Hamilton, Kyle Hamilton, Aparna Nayak, Bojan Bozic, Luca Longo

Articles

Advocates for Neuro-Symbolic Artificial Intelligence (NeSy) assert that combining deep learning with symbolic reasoning will lead to stronger AI than either paradigm on its own. As successful as deep learning has been, it is generally accepted that even our best deep learning systems are not very good at abstract reasoning. And since reasoning is inextricably linked to language, it makes intuitive sense that Natural Language Processing (NLP), would be a particularly well-suited candidate for NeSy. We conduct a structured review of studies implementing NeSy for NLP, with the aim of answering the question of whether NeSy is indeed meeting its …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Network control theory is increasingly used to profile the brain's energy landscape via simulations of neural dynamics. This approach estimates the control energy required to simulate the activation of brain circuits based on structural connectome measured using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, thereby quantifying those circuits' energetic efficiency. The biological basis of control energy, however, remains unknown, hampering its further application. To fill this gap, investigating temporal lobe epilepsy as a lesion model, we show that patients require higher control energy to activate the limbic network than healthy volunteers, especially ipsilateral to the seizure focus. The energetic imbalance between ipsilateral and …

The deadly threat caused by the rapid spread of COVID-19 has been restricted by virtue of vaccines. However, there is misinformation regarding the certainty and positives outcome of getting vaccinated; hence, many people are reluctant to opt for it. Therefore, in this paper, we identified public sentiments and hesitancy toward the COVID-19 vaccines based on Instagram posts as part of intelligent surveillance. We first retrieved more than 10k publicly available comments and captions posted under different vaccine hashtags (namely, covaxin, covishield, and sputnik). Next, we translated the extracted comments into a common language (English), followed by the calculation of the …

The C-Equivalence Principle And Its Implications For Physics, Max Tran Nov 2022

The C-Equivalence Principle And Its Implications For Physics, Max Tran

Publications and Research

The c-equivalence principle, commonly accepted as true by most physicists, is the unstated assumption that (1/sqrt(ε₀μ₀)) equals the kinematic speed of light. Should someone prove the principle false, it would render the composition of two Lorentz transformations meaningless. The second hypothesis of the Special Theory of Relativity in its strong form would also be invalidated. This paper examined some of the consequences for physics, should this principle be proven false and outline some experiments to determine light speed, which could falsify the principle and provide evidence for the ether.
