Pancreaticoduodenectomy In 11-Year-Old Male With A Non-Functional Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor, Whitney Elks, Jessa Rose Li, Alexander Zajack, Lance Horner, Alan Ikeda, Charles St Hill, Michael Scheidler, Shirong Chang

School of Medicine Faculty Research

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) are rare pancreatic neoplasms and are even more uncommon in the pediatric patients, thus leading to a lack of clinical research on diagnosis and management in this population. The purpose of this report is to review relevant literature and discuss a rare occurrence of a non-functioning pNET in a pediatric patient. This is a report of an 11-year-old male who presented with symptomatic anemia and was found to have a 6 cm mass near the pancreatic head with erosion into the duodenum. Surgical biopsy demonstrated a non-functioning pNET. He was successfully managed with complete surgical resection …

Cognitive Training Enhances Growth Mindset In Children Through Plasticity Of Cortico-Striatal Circuits, Lang Chen, Hyesang Chang, Jeremy Rudoler, Eydis Arnardottir, Yuan Zhang, Carlo De Los Angeles, Vinod Menon

Psychology

Growth mindset, the belief that one’s abilities can improve through cognitive effort, is an important psychological construct with broad implications for enabling children to reach their highest potential. However, surprisingly little is known about malleability of growth mindset in response to cognitive interventions in children and its neurobiological underpinnings. Here we address critical gaps in our knowledge by investigating behavioral and brain changes in growth mindset associated with a four-week training program designed to enhance foundational, academically relevant, cognitive skills in 7–10-year-old children. Cognitive training significantly enhanced children’s growth mindset. Cross-lagged panel analysis of longitudinal pre- and post-training data revealed …

Heterotopias Of Nationalist Youth Organisations In Poland: Communitarisation And Entry/Exit System, Helena Ostrowicka, Klaudia Wolniewicz-Slomka

The Qualitative Report

The article presents the results of an analysis of the discourse of nationalist youth organisations in Poland. The authors have attempted to reconstruct the common “us” of two youth organisations based on the materials made available by them as well as articles in the press published in 2018 in selected journals and weeklies. This was the year when Poland celebrated its 100th anniversary of regaining independence, which made this an exceptional time in the context of discourse about the community. The article focuses on two youth organisations – the All-Polish Youth (APY) and the National Radical Camp (NRC). The …

P-type ternary switch devices are crucial elements for the practical implementation of complementary ternary circuits. This report demonstrates a p-type ternary device showing three distinct electrical output states with controllable threshold voltage values using a dual-channel dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]-thiophene-graphene barristor structure. to obtain transfer characteristics with distinctively separated ternary states, novel structures called contact-resistive and contact-doping layers were developed. The feasibility of a complementary standard ternary inverter design around 1 V was demonstrated using the experimentally calibrated ternary device model.

Examining The Role Of Experiential Avoidance And Valued Action In The Negative Effects Of Weight Self-Stigma, Marissa L. Donahue, Michael E. Levin, Kayloni Olson, Emily Panza, Jason Lillis Nov 2022

Examining The Role Of Experiential Avoidance And Valued Action In The Negative Effects Of Weight Self-Stigma, Marissa L. Donahue, Michael E. Levin, Kayloni Olson, Emily Panza, Jason Lillis

Psychology Faculty Publications

Harmful effects of weight self-stigma on quality of life and health behaviors have been well-established. However, the processes that lead to these negative outcomes are less understood. Psychological inflexibility is defined as a pattern of rigid psychological reactions dominating over values and meaningful actions. A lack in valued action is characterized by the absence of activities that are connected to what is personally meaningful. In this secondary analysis, we aim to extend research by examining two subprocesses of psychological inflexibility, experiential avoidance and lack of valued action, as statistical mediators of the relations between weight self-stigma and quality of life/health …

Predicting Users’ Personality On Social Media: A Comparative Study Of Different Machine Learning Techniques, Ali Saadi Al-Fallooji, Ahmed Al-Azawei

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The use of social media sites (SMSs) becomes ubiquitous worldwide as the number of users is noticeably increasing. This has led to exploiting such sites by market, business, and educational companies to deliver content that meets users’ personal needs. However, this requires identifying users’ personalities to respond to their individual preferences. This research aims at (1) analyzing users' posts on SMSs to predict their personality based on the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) model, (2) comparing the performance accuracy of different preprocessing and data mining techniques, and (3) improving the prediction accuracy of users' personality types. The used dataset includes 8668 …

Legal Protection Of Shareholders Of The Company Targeted By Friendly Takeover Bid: Analytical Study In Uae Law, Alaa Yakoob Yousif Dr. Nov 2022

Legal Protection Of Shareholders Of The Company Targeted By Friendly Takeover Bid: Analytical Study In Uae Law, Alaa Yakoob Yousif Dr.

مجلة جامعة الإمارات للبحوث القانونية UAEU LAW JOURNAL

Takeover is an important way of economic concentration. The bidder, with a large share holding of company's shares, is expanding his scope economically and geographically, which increases his competitiveness in the market. Takeover also enhances the competitiveness of the company targeted by it, and can improve its performance by leveraging the bidder economic capabilities. However, these advantages are offset by certain flaws, and do not compromise the risks that may be incurred by the shareholders of the company targeted by the takeover bids, as their agreement to sell their shares and thus enable the bidder to achieve his aim should …

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In late July of 1959 Chicago dance writer Ann Barzel went to Cuba. The successful revolution led by Fidel Castro to overthrow the military dictatorship of Cuban president Fulgencio Batista had happened a little over six months earlier, and relations with the United States, while not comfortable, were still imaginable. Barzel came at the invitation of her friends, the ballet dancers Alicia and Fernando Alonso, to act as a member of the selection board for auditions for the Ballet Alicia Alonso. Founded in 1948, Ballet Alicia Alonso was Cuba’s first professional ballet company (it would later become the Ballet Nacional …

Unraveling The Complex Interactions Between Members Of The Schistosoma Haematobium Group And Bulinus Snails In And Around Lake Victoria In West Kenya, Caitlin Raiselle Babbitt

Biology ETDs

Schistosoma haematobium, the agent of urogenital schistosomiasis, and related schistosomes are transmitted by members of the genus Bulinus. Each of the 38 Bulinus species vary in their ability to vector schistosome species and non-schistosome trematodes resulting in a patchwork of snail-parasite compatibilities. Accurately identifying snail intermediate hosts and the disease-causing parasites they transmit is critical for snail control strategies and the management of human schistosomiasis. Towards these ends, this thesis identifies bulinid species and the parasites they transmit and implicates certain species in the transmission of S. haematobium. The thesis also includes a systematic review of methods …

BACKGROUND: A third of people with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) are drug-resistant. Three-quarters have a seizure relapse when attempting to withdraw anti-seizure medication (ASM) after achieving seizure-freedom. It is currently impossible to predict who is likely to become drug-resistant and safely withdraw treatment. We aimed to identify predictors of drug resistance and seizure recurrence to allow for individualised prediction of treatment outcomes in people with JME.

METHODS: We performed an individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis based on a systematic search in EMBASE and PubMed - last updated on March 11, 2021 - including prospective and retrospective observational studies reporting on …
