Philip Livingston To John Kean, February 2, 1795, Philip Livingston

Liberty Hall Collection 1790s

Philip Livingston in New York, NY wrote to John Kean, addressed to Philadelphia, PA. The English newspapers arrived from Liverpool to 18 December. An acquaintance asked the captain if the British public believed that the King of Prussia had made a separate peace with France to which he responded that there was a mixed reaction with some believing it and others not because there was no official report yet. There were no actions between the various armies and the moderates had restrained the Jacobins in the Convention in France. There was a rumor that Mr. Jay sent a letter to …

Jean Paul—Johann Paul Friedrich Richter (1763-1825)—was a German writer in the Romantic tradition, also known for his humorous writing. Hesperus (1795) includes two major ideas that MacDonald explores throughout Phantastes: the notion of dreams, and the importance of mirrors.

Liberty Hall Collection 1790s

Copies of the letters which passed between John Kean and Philip Peter Livingston, his brother-in-law, during the joint transaction between them. the majority of the letters are written from New York or Philadelphia and mentioned other family members such as Susan Kean and Sarah Ricketts. The last several letters are actually between Philip and his sister Susan Kean, John's wife. This was presumably because of John's failing health and death on May 4, 1795. The letters start on December 4, 1794, and end on July 1, 1795.

The Remarkable Adventures Of Jackson Johonnet, Of Massachusetts (1793), Jackson Johonnet, Paul Royster , Editor

“Who served as a Soldier in the Western Army, in the Massachusetts Line, in the Expedition under General HARMAR, and the unfortunate General St. CLAIR. Containing An Account of his CAPTIVITY, SUFFERINGS, and ESCAPE from the KICKAPOO INDIANS. WRITTEN BY HIMSELF, And published at the earnest Importunity of his Friends, for the benefit of AMERICAN YOUTH.”

This is a spurious captivity narrative that enjoyed much popularity in the mid-1790s and was thereafter incorporated into the “canonical” body of accounts of white imprisonments, tortures, sufferings, and escapes from the Native Americans.

The narrative tells the story of “Jackson Johonnet,” a young …

The Conspiracy Of Kings; A Poem: Addressed To The Inhabitants Of Europe, From Another Quarter Of The World., Joel Barlow, John D. Baird

Electronic Texts in American Studies

The Conspiracy of Kings, published in February 1792, is very much a work of its time, the first months of the constitional monarchy in France. Louis XVI and the new Legislative Assembly began their uneasy relationship in October 1792. Outside France, exiled members of the nobility campaigned to persuade the sovereigns of Europe to intervene and restore them to their privileges. On the other side, friends of the French Revolution sought to discourage intervention and to discredit the principles of legitimacy and social hierarchy that supported the old order.

Joel Barlow had arrived in France in 1788 to act …

Sister To Susan Kean, October 11, 1791

Liberty Hall Collection 1790s

Mary McIntosh or Sarah Ricketts wrote to their sister, Susan Kean, no address. The final page was not present. There are many daily details.

She missed Susan and was delighted when she received her letter the night before. She described a religious service that she did not agree with. She described the local neighborhood of her "savage" [Native American?] and they offered her to join them at a potluck, but she declined. She attended a ball hosted by Mr. S. A--, with the children, dancing master, 23 other ladies, and "her" Native American. She prepared curtains for party the next …

Excerpt, Travels Through North And South Carolina, Georgia, East And West Florida, The Cherokee Country, The Extensive Territories Of The Muscogulges, Or Creek Confederacy, And The Country Of The Choctaws, William Bartram, Devin Pallone, Heather Wiseman

Early Visions Bucket

"Commissioned by the London physician John Fothergill to survey the land and catalog the flora and fauna, Bartram rambled through the southeastern colonies of North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama from 1774-1777. He filled the pages of journals with notes about the landscape, encounters with its inhabitants, and his reflections on what moved him most. He sketched quirky birds and sinuous plants. The result of his journals and letters was a book known as Travels, published in 1791, and circulated widely in the US and Europe."
