Visualizing Library Impact: Creating Accessible Dashboards Of Organization-Wide Data, Josie Cotton Jan 2024

Visualizing Library Impact: Creating Accessible Dashboards Of Organization-Wide Data, Josie Cotton

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship

We created dashboards for the core functions of our library, including physical collections and spaces, user services, digital resources, and outreach and engagement. Our dashboards provide insight into how the library is being used and by whom, as well as into our overall value to and impact on the university. Furthermore, our dashboards promote a culture of data-driven decision making, so that stakeholders can use them to make choices that better serve users.

We created these dashboards with Tableau and used a wide variety of sources, such as data from the overhead counter, room reservations, Google Analytics, circulation, transactions, and …

This article is a story about privilege. The recognition that as an academic, it is a privilege to have a seat at the policymaking table. It is a privilege to be heard, to be valued, and to contribute in ways that impact the lives of real people, in real communities, related to real problems. Researchers who’ve had the opportunity to participate in community-based collaborations know well that such partnerships are built on trust, patience, commitment, and thick skin (Drawbridge, Taheri, & Frost, 2018). When someone allows us in the door it can come with perceived risk. They sometimes open their …

An Exploration Of Factors Influencing Emerging Adults’ Decision-Making Regarding Family Intentionality, Samantha Mckee

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to gain an understanding of factors that may influence emerging adults’ decision-making regarding family intentionality. Specifically, it aimed to answer two research questions: 1) What factors influence an emerging adults’ decision-making regarding family intentionality? 2) Is there a correlation between the number of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) an individual has experienced and their desire to have children? This study also examined how ACEs are factored into the different systems of Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory and how they affect the child at each level. This study utilized a sequential quan-->QUAL design, combining …

Continuities And Transformations: The Tiwanaku Component Of The Site Of In Copacabana, Bolivia, Stanislava R. Chavez

Wayne State University Dissertations

The site of Cundisa in Copacabana (Copacabana Peninsula, Bolivia) was occupied almost continuously for the past 2,500 years. The oldest occupation includes a Yaya-Mama religious tradition semi-subterranean temple with some associated burials. Later, the whole site, including the interior of the Yaya-Mama temple, was used as a Tiwanaku cemetery. Subsequently, the Incas reused the site, as they incorporated Copacabana into their empire as a major pilgrimage site. After the Spanish conquest the site continued to be occupied, including an oven where glazed tiles for the Copacabana Basilica were fired. This dissertation focuses on the Tiwanaku component of this complex site. …

Remixing Community Cartographies: Mapping Community Engagement, New Media, And The Composition Classroom, Christopher W. Susak Jan 2024

Remixing Community Cartographies: Mapping Community Engagement, New Media, And The Composition Classroom, Christopher W. Susak

Wayne State University Dissertations

Community Writing has emerged as a relatively new subdiscipline that spans elements of larger fields such as Rhetoric and Writing Studies, Technical and Professional Communication, and Composition Pedagogy. Despite this recent emergence, teacher-scholars are still grappling with three major problematics traditionally associated with Community Engaged Learning (CEL) writ large: (1) this work frequently fails to address the real needs and basic material realities of community partners in favor of (2) a repetitive cycle of short-lived educational “experiences” for students, often without tangible and/or sustainable results, which is further exacerbated by (3) a shortage of useful data-driven assessment conducted on curriculum, …

Tracking Attention About Covid-19 Vaccines On Twitter And Newspapers: A Dynamic Agenda-Setting Approach, Yi (Jasmine) Wang, Xjuli Wang, Jueman (Mandy) Zhang, Molu Shi, Wayne Wanta

Journalism & Public Relations Faculty Publications

This study delves into the intricate dynamics of agenda-setting between Twitter and elite news media concerning COVID-19 vaccines. A comprehensive dataset comprising 501,531 US-based, English-language tweets and 7,282 news headlines extracted from The New York Times and The Washington Post was collected from January 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021. To uncover the temporal evolution of content topics, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) was employed alongside sentiment analysis to gage corresponding valence levels. Granger causality tests were then conducted on the time series of topic sizes and valence scores from tweets and news headlines to explore the intermedia agenda-setting effects. The …

“I Shall Gather In”: The Name Joseph, Iterative Divine Action, And The Latter-Day Harvest Ingathering Of Israel As Themes In 3 Nephi, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2024

“I Shall Gather In”: The Name Joseph, Iterative Divine Action, And The Latter-Day Harvest Ingathering Of Israel As Themes In 3 Nephi, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The identity of “the people of Nephi who were spared, and also those who had been called Lamanites, who had been spared” (3 Nephi 10:18) as “a remnant of the seed of Joseph” (3 Nephi 5:23; 10:17; compare Alma 46:23–27; Ether 13:6–10) or “a remnant of the house of Joseph” (3 Nephi 15:12) is key to understanding Jesus’s Isaiah-based teaching at the temple in Bountiful in 3 Nephi. That teaching emphasizes iterative divine action (implied in the name Joseph [yôsēp], compare yôsîp) to restore and gather Israel and Judah. Like Mormon’s prophecies in 3 Nephi 5:23–26 and 26:8, Jesus’s sermon …

From Nüxia To Xianü: Female Agency In Classical Chinese Zhiguai Xiaoshuo, Cynthia Lucas Jan 2024

From Nüxia To Xianü: Female Agency In Classical Chinese Zhiguai Xiaoshuo, Cynthia Lucas

Theses & ETDs

The Tang dynasty tale, “The Merchant’s Wife” (“Guren qi” 贾人妻) by Xue Yongruo 薛用弱, and its Qing dynasty rewrite, “A Female Knight-Errant” (“Xianü” 侠女) by Pu Songling 蒲松龄 represent interesting depictions of a nüxia within the zhiguai xiaoshuo tradition that show her journey from an empowered character with agency to a flatly powerful character without said agency. In order to argue this conclusive analysis between the two iterations, I first define the concepts of power, empowerment, and agency within the historical, cultural, and literary contexts of each iteration. Though both women exhibit power, they are not both able to access …

Testing The Relationship Between Per-Pupil Expenditures And Demonstrated Mastery Across Biology And Literature, Nina Braum-Bharti Jan 2024

Testing The Relationship Between Per-Pupil Expenditures And Demonstrated Mastery Across Biology And Literature, Nina Braum-Bharti

NERA Conference Proceedings 2024

Because inquiry-based, resource intensive Biology instruction is more costly than Literature instruction, a relationship between district-wide per-pupil expenditure and performance differences between Biology and Literature exams is hypothesized. Using Pennsylvania’s Keystone exams, analyses reveal a small but significant effect, with higher expenditures associated with smaller gaps in mastery between Biology and Literature.

Supporting Struggling Readers In Digital Instruction: Audio Support Features As Instructional Tools, Sebastian Moncaleano, Fusun Sahin

NERA Conference Proceedings 2024

Audio Support is a common functionality in digital instruction platforms intended to increase accessibility. A significant portion of the literature on Audio Support focuses on its use as a testing accommodation or, in and instructional context, on its use by students with disabilities. We examined how much 6th-grade students used audio support in reading comprehension digital lessons as an instructional support tool and its potential impact on learning outcomes. Audio support usage assisting reading comprehension instruction was found to be associated with higher likelihood of lesson success, particularly for Below-level Readers.

Neuroprognostication In Patients With A Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Quasi-Review Of Anti-Inflammatory Agent Administration Versus Blood Pressure Management, Julia Gabalski, Marcie Mcmahon Jan 2024

Neuroprognostication In Patients With A Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Quasi-Review Of Anti-Inflammatory Agent Administration Versus Blood Pressure Management, Julia Gabalski, Marcie Mcmahon

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

A subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a type of stoke where a blood vessel bursts and causes the subarachnoid space to become filled with blood. Traditional nursing management of SAH includes close monitoring of blood pressure goals in order to prevent complications such as vasospasm. Vasospasm causes delayed cerebral ischemia and neurological deficits secondary to the initial injury. Recent research has expanded understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind the neuroinflammatory cascade that occurs after a SAH. In this study, a methodical search was conducted through the CINAHL and PubMed databases to form a quasi-review of current research. The comparison of traditional …

Federal Common Law Stare Decisis And The Doctrine Of Equitable Apportionment, Eric P. Leis Jan 2024

Federal Common Law Stare Decisis And The Doctrine Of Equitable Apportionment, Eric P. Leis

Buffalo Environmental Law Journal

United States Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas erred in his concurrence to Gamble v. United States when he derived his “demonstrably erroneous” standard of stare decisis because he overlooked a significant portion of federal law: federal common law. In Gamble, Justice Thomas argued for a weak standard of stare decisis under which the Supreme Court would overrule any “demonstrably erroneous” precedent that is contrary to our written laws, regulations, and Constitution. This standard may be functional when applying positive law, but it simply cannot be maintained when confronted with matters of federal common law. Were Justice Thomas’ “demonstrably erroneous” standard …

Strategies to Improve Student Achievement

A once-in-a-generation pandemic has had a once-in-a-generation impact on our nation’s children and youth. That is why, since day one, the Biden-Harris Administration has worked aggressively to safely reopen schools and keep them open, help students recover academically, support their mental health and well-being, and address teacher and staffing challenges many communities face.

While American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds have helped fuel important progress toward academic recovery, we have much work to do to get students back to – and beyond – pre-pandemic levels of achievement. This will require continued and additional actions, commitments, and …

Introduction To Past And Future Presence: Approaches For Implementing Xr Technology In Humanities And Art Education, Brian Beams, Lissa Crofton-Sleigh

Classics

Extended reality (XR) technology (that is, virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and other 3D technologies) offers many opportunities and benefits for education in the humanities and arts. However, after attending many education- technology workshops and having read countless books and journal articles on the uses of XR in education over the past decade, it has been overwhelmingly apparent that most of the research and conference presentations tend to focus on the use of this technology in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. While in many ways this is understandable, given the obvious applications of the technology to the …
