Ventilator Weaning Parameters Revisited: A Traditional Analysis And A Test Of Artificial Intelligence To Predict Successful Extubation, John James Andrews Jan 2024

Ventilator Weaning Parameters Revisited: A Traditional Analysis And A Test Of Artificial Intelligence To Predict Successful Extubation, John James Andrews

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The prediction of which patients can be liberated successfully from mechanical ventilation and which patients require continued support remains a challenge for clinicians. While premature extubation comes with many risks, including respiratory distress, loss of airway, complications of reintubation, and increased mortality, delayed extubation comes with risks including ventilator-associated pneumonia, ventilator-induced lung injury, airway trauma, and unnecessary sedation. With such serious clinical implications, there is a strong and persistent interest among clinicians to identify better models to predict extubation success. Multiple respiratory parameters for predicting weaning success have been assessed over the past several decades, with particular attention to respiratory …

Cave Signs: Assessing Mammoth Cave National Park's Access For The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Katelyn Lane

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This project evaluates the accessibility of cave tours in Mammoth Cave National Park for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community (DHHC). The study was advertised to the DHHC with the use of flyers through the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, First Baptist Church Bowling Green’s Deaf Ministry, WKU social media, and directly to visitors who contacted the park seeking services. Willing participants either joined a group tour or reserved their own cave tour, requesting necessary accommodations. Following these tours, a survey was given inquiring about participants’ general experience with Mammoth Cave, whether all their needs …

Exploring Clustering Patterns In Msmes And Large Enterprises In Maharashtra: Analyzing Industrial Dynamics Using Cluster Coefficient And Other Economic Indicators, Priyanshu Bist Jan 2024

Exploring Clustering Patterns In Msmes And Large Enterprises In Maharashtra: Analyzing Industrial Dynamics Using Cluster Coefficient And Other Economic Indicators, Priyanshu Bist

2024 REYES Proceedings

The paper discusses an attempt to explore and assess the economic clustering in Maharashtra by focusing on the MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) and large enterprises in six major districts, namely Konkan, Nashik, Pune, Aurangabad, Amravati, and Nagpur. Cluster coefficients, total number of workers, and other economic indicators of units were considered to understand how industries are spread and perform regionally. Our research was a combination of exploratory and descriptive research, ensuring the data to be garnered had already been collected from the reports and records of the governments concerned and of industries. This entails that we have a …

CONFERENCE THEME: FANTASIES OF THE MIDDLE LANDS

The idea of “middle-ness” can suggest stability—the center of an object is less likely to break than its edges. It can also suggest the opposite: something in a state of change can be said to be “in the middle”—neither one thing nor another. Mythcon 53, located in the middle of the continental U.S., welcomes an exciting range of papers, panels, and discussions exploring the concept of “middle-ness” as it is worked out in fantasy, science fiction, …

Daydreams: Cinema Of The Russian Empire And Beyond, A Database, Anna Kovalova

The Journal of e-Media Studies

The essay provides a detailed description of Daydreams, the first scholarly database of feature films produced in the Russian Empire and its former territories from the first years after the October Revolution until the end of private film production. This database contains the most complete filmographies, synopses, iconographic materials (such as promotional stills, posters, and frame enlargements), and video clips for more than 2,500 films. Tracing its goals, scope, sources, and structure, the article discusses a fundamental digital platform of materials related to the cinema of the Russian Empire which is about to open in the fall of 2023.

Seeing Through The Haverstraw Tunnel, Dan Streible Jan 2024

Seeing Through The Haverstraw Tunnel, Dan Streible

The Journal of e-Media Studies

The American Mutoscope Company’s The Haverstraw Tunnel was one of the most popular screenings of 1897, inspiring ecstatic rhetoric in descriptions of the experience of watching the original “phantom ride” train film. Historians appropriated such language (“an unseen energy swallows up space”) to theorize about early cinema. Yet until 2020, this significant production was difficult to see. The one-minute recording was shot and projected on large-format 68mm film stock, producing a high-resolution image as seen from the front of an express train traveling along the Hudson River. This essay recounts the archival research process abetted by the Library of Congress …

Revisiting The Motivated Denial Of Mind To Animals Used For Food: Replication Registered Report Of Bastian Et Al. (2012), Tyler P. Jacobs, M. Wang, S. Leach, H. L. Siu, M. Khanna, K. W. Chan, H. T. Chau, K. Y. Y. Tam, G. Feldman

Psychology Faculty Works

Bastian et al. (2012) argued that the meat paradox—caring for animals yet eating them—creates a tension between people’s moral standards (caring for animals) and their behavior (eating them) that can be resolved via mechanisms of motivated moral disengagement. One disengagement mechanism that is thought to play a central role is the denial of food-animal minds and therefore their status as moral patients. This idea has garnered substantial interest and has framed much of the psychological approach to meat consumption. We subjected Studies 1 and 2 of Bastian et al. (2012) to high-powered direct replications and found support for the target …

Reimagining Equitable Care: Simulation-Based Education And The Dismantling Of Implicit Bias And Stigma Of Vulnerable Populations In Hospitals, Vanessa Smith Jan 2024

Reimagining Equitable Care: Simulation-Based Education And The Dismantling Of Implicit Bias And Stigma Of Vulnerable Populations In Hospitals, Vanessa Smith

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background: Simulation-based education consists of using high-fidelity mannequins and equipment to provide a safe space for healthcare professionals to practice crucial skills within healthcare. Used within hospitals and schools, simulation most commonly surrounds practicing hands-on skills such as central line insertion, IV insertion, Ultrasound-guided procedures, code blue response, etc. However, a large portion of healthcare that is overlooked is tackling issues within patient-provider relationships. Simulation can help dismantle the negative behaviors and feelings providers push onto patients through the use of standardized patients and role-playing. By using these methods, simulation can reduce providers’ personal implicit biases and the stigma associated …

Factors That Influence The Prevalence Of Food Allergy In Children Born In Industrialized Countries Vs. Developing Countries: A Literature Review & Feasibility Study, Dimitri Miguel Lacson Torres

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background

Food allergy (FA) is known to be more prevalent in industrialized countries compared to developing countries. FA is a chronic disease that can cause a range of symptoms from regional urticaria to lethal anaphylaxis. FA affects 10% of the general population and is more common in children, affecting 8% of children versus 3% of adults (Seth, D. et al., 2020). It is unclear why food allergy is more common in industrialized countries versus developing countries. Research Question What are the influential factors that affect the increasing incidence of food allergy in toddlers born in industrialized countries versus those that …

Biopsychosocial Factors In Oral And Systemic Diseases: A Scoping Review, Abby L. J. Hensel, Kathryn Nicholson, Kelly K Anderson, Noha A. Gomaa

Dentistry Publications

BACKGROUND: The association between chronic oral diseases and other major systemic health conditions, commonly referred to as the oral-systemic health connection, has been previously studied with several underlying common risk factors and pathways linking both groups of diseases. Psychosocial factors contribute to an increased susceptibility to chronic oral and non-oral diseases. The aim of this review is to summarize the current state of knowledge on the role of psychosocial stress in chronic oral and systemic diseases.

METHODS: A search strategy was built and a literature search was conducted using four databases (CINAHL, Embase, Medline, PsycINFO). A combination of search terms …

Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS) Capstone Projects

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most commonly occurring pancreatic cancer, comprising 90% of the cases. The prognosis for the disease remains poor due to a lack of effective screening programs, specifically in Canada. Methods: A scoping search was conducted using Google Scholar and PubMed. Keywords were used to guide the search and filter the results based on relevance. Results: Our search resulted in a total of 891 articles, of which 72 were included in the final review, and key findings were extracted and synthesized. Findings included many factors related to existing screening programs globally, different …

Creative Translation For Real-World Contexts: English ↔ Spanish, Remy Attig Jan 2024

Creative Translation For Real-World Contexts: English ↔ Spanish, Remy Attig

Open Educational Resources

Creative Translation for Real-World Contexts is one of the first translation textbooks designed for Spanish/English speakers at an intermediate-high (B2) level. This book introduces students to the basic ideas of translation while addressing frequent pain points that recur when working bidirectionally. Additionally, a focus is placed on fostering metacognitive skills by encouraging creative translation from real-world environments such as narration, business, advertising, specialized contexts (including inclusive and queer language), and in situations when there are no clear translations available, such as sci-fi and fantasy works. Chapters alternate between Spanish and English as the languages of discussion, thus providing an equitable …

Rahab And The Perpetuation Of Deliverance, Amy H. Fisher Jan 2024

Rahab And The Perpetuation Of Deliverance, Amy H. Fisher

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Deliverance is clearly the major theme of the memorable Exodus story, but the Exodus is not the only Old Testament account that teaches profound lessons about God’s redemption. The story of Rahab—the woman of Jericho—is situated in relation to the Exodus through shared images and narrative elements to highlight additional insights about God’s power to save. Specifically, the Rahab story shows that God continues in the temporal, collective delivery of his covenant people even after Egypt. God is also interested in both the temporal and spiritual deliverance of individuals, as shown in the life of Rahab herself. Finally, the story …
