Performing Presidential Age: "It's About How Old Your Ideas Are", Valerie Barnes Lipscomb Jan 2024

Performing Presidential Age: "It's About How Old Your Ideas Are", Valerie Barnes Lipscomb

English Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

During a February surprise appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, President Joe Biden whipped out his trademark aviator sunglasses and traded quips with Meyers about a supposed conspiracy with Taylor Swift, much to the delight of the younger live audience. The next day, reviews were mixed about whether the president was trying too hard or did in fact manage to look hipper. To look younger. While US presidential nominees have been consciously performing their campaigns for decades, during this cycle, considering age as a performance has been especially prominent. Commentators and critics have specifically addressed the careful staging …

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Music participation is a beneficial activity for seniors. This qualitative study examined the experiences of sixteen healthy older adults in Thailand who engaged in some way with music. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews. The findings revealed four themes. The first theme, “Music as Leisure vs. Identity,” highlights music's dual role in offering enjoyment and shaping one identity. The second theme, “Music's Role in Social Connections,” explores how engagement with music fosters relationships and builds a sense of community. The third theme, “Music for Well-being,” highlights music's contributions to health and well-being. The last theme “Music as Lifelong Self-Improvement …

Debussy And Siamese Whole-Tone Scale Music, Weerachat Premananda, Yodchye Phrom-Indra

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This article explores Claude Debussy, Siamese whole-tone scale music, and urban cultural connections between France and Siam in terms of history, theory, and its inspiring creativity to music. Playing an important role in Western music, whole-tone scale expresses spirit and philosophy of the East along with unique improvisation and rhythmic patterns. More importantly it has been influential to a number of Western masterpieces such as music by Debussy, Béla Bartók, and Klaus Pringsheim. Siamese 7-note whole-tone scale music had a close connection with France since the diplomat to Siam, Simon de la Loubère was recognized to be the first foreigner …

De-Politicizing And Dis-Remembering The White Terror Through Gothic : The Grand Narrative And Embarrassed Politics Of Collective Commemoration In The Movie Detention, Min-Tser Lin Jan 2024

De-Politicizing And Dis-Remembering The White Terror Through Gothic : The Grand Narrative And Embarrassed Politics Of Collective Commemoration In The Movie Detention, Min-Tser Lin

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article aims to read Taiwan’s 2019 cinematic horror sensation, Detention, as part of the nation’s effort to construct a grand narrative of collective commemoration, as it tries to streamline its multiple conflicting memories about the Nationalist government’s violent political suppressions of suspected dissidents during the mid-20th century, commonly called the White Terror. For this nationalist narrative to follow the Gothic scenario of progression from repression to liberation, embarrassing elements of the past, especially many White Terror victims’ sympathy with the Chinese Communist Party, must be de-politicized and dis-remembered. The movie adopts a ploy that can be called “isomorphic …

The Acquisition Of Passives By Thai Preschoolers, Kitima Indrambarya Jan 2024

The Acquisition Of Passives By Thai Preschoolers, Kitima Indrambarya

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study investigates how pre-school Thai children comprehend Thai short and long passives with adversative and non-adversative and action and psychological verbs. The results show that preschool children did not comprehend passives well, primarily because of the thematic role reversal in the subjects of passives and actives. Action verbs are acquired earlier and better than psychological verbs. Unlike previous studies of other languages, Thai children comprehend long passives better than short passives with most verb types.

Cultural-Religious Dimensions Of The ‘Ritual Issue’ In Pre-Colonial Vietnamese And Western Interactions, Nguyen Quang Hung, Nguyen Dinh Lam Jan 2024

Cultural-Religious Dimensions Of The ‘Ritual Issue’ In Pre-Colonial Vietnamese And Western Interactions, Nguyen Quang Hung, Nguyen Dinh Lam

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Through a meticulous examination of edicts issued by both imperial courts and Christian missionaries, this article posits that the ‘ritual issue’ – i.e., the divergence in ritualistic practices and values between Christianity and indigenous religions – constituted a principal obstacle to the proliferation of Christianity in Vietnam between the 17th and 19th centuries. Notably, the paper identifies a substantive transformation in the perception of the ‘ritual issue.’ During the 17th and 18th centuries under the Trịnh-Nguyễn lords, the issue was predominantly approached through a cultural-religious lens. However, in the 19th century under the Nguyễn dynasty, the issue acquired a cultural-political …

A Battle On Social Media : Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Sampradaya In Bali, I Wayan Numertayasa, Anang Santoso, Moch Syahri, Pande Agus Adiwijaya

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study focuses on the discourse battle on Facebook between two ideological perspectives on the existence of Sampradaya in Bali. Sampradaya refers to the Hindu spiritual community in Bali which has been adopting new traditions and practices from India since 1980. Since then, their presence in Bali has faced opposition, including the prohibition of Hare Krishna literature and the closure of Hare Krishna learning centers. Starting in 2019, this resistance has created a battleground of conflicting narratives that influence the public. This research aims to comprehend the representation of ideological perspectives and discourse battle strategies within the Sampradaya discourse on …

From Victory To Democracy : The “Democracy” In Thailand’S Victory Monument, Gil Turingan Jan 2024

From Victory To Democracy : The “Democracy” In Thailand’S Victory Monument, Gil Turingan

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper discusses the symbolic transformation of Thailand’s Victory Monument in the Thai public memory, from embodying militarism to representing the complicated concept of Thai democracy. In the beginning, the monument had an indirect connection to democracy. However, due to the spatial agency, such as protest activities occupying this structure, it has turned into one of Bangkok’s democratic spaces. By looking at the stories of contentious politics and narratives surrounding this structure, this study reveals that the development of the Victory Monument’s meanings mirrors the democratic struggles of the Thai people. It also applies prevailing discourses on Thai democracy to …

Anaphoric Expressions In Thai Narratives : A Corpus Study On Accessibility And Distributional Tendency, Nimit Kumwapee, Nattanun Chanchaochai Jan 2024

Anaphoric Expressions In Thai Narratives : A Corpus Study On Accessibility And Distributional Tendency, Nimit Kumwapee, Nattanun Chanchaochai

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study examines the relationship between Thai anaphoric expressions and their antecedents’ Accessibility, analyzing 3,453 expressions from Thai-Zlatev Corpus (Zlatev and Yangklang 2001), Aakanee Website (Aakanee, “Thai Recordings”) and Thai Folktale Database (Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre, “Folktales”). Grounded in Ariel’s Accessibility Theory (1988, 1990), which asserts that referring expressions are universally arranged on an Accessibility scale but marking systems vary by language, we propose an Accessibility Marking Scale for Thai anaphoric expressions, informed by the factors of Distance, Competition, Saliency and Unity. Some anaphoric expressions showed no significant differences in mean Accessibility, leading them to share ranks. Our …

Mia Farang On Youtube: (Re)Defining Thai Womanhood In The Network Society, Porranee Singpliam, Treepon Kirdnark Jan 2024

Mia Farang On Youtube: (Re)Defining Thai Womanhood In The Network Society, Porranee Singpliam, Treepon Kirdnark

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines the notion of mia farang amid the covid-19 pandemic. An analysis of mia farang YouTubers during this time reveals essential characteristics of the gendered and sexualized trope. Through Barker and Kuiper’s (2014) lens on the globalization process, we postulate that women’s voices during the peak of covid-19 became more political, namely with regard to their quality of life compared to that in Thailand. Further, we argue that our textual analysis on three mia farang YouTubers (Yai Nee, Yai Nang, and Yai Chompoo) shows how the space of flows is a possible site for political criticism and negotiation …

Thai Rap Songs Through The World Englishes Approach : Code-Switching And Nativization, Ekkarat Ruanglertsilp Jan 2024

Thai Rap Songs Through The World Englishes Approach : Code-Switching And Nativization, Ekkarat Ruanglertsilp

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study examines the English elements and nativized English features present in recent Thai rap songs. The source data comes from a Thai rap playlist called Thai Rapper on the online music platform Spotify. All English units found in the lyrics were manually counted and classified. The results diverged from most studies of Thai-English code-switching in Thai media in that, among the English elements considered, sentences were employed most frequently. Among nativized English features, semantic shift was most frequently employed. I argue that the local and global English identity flows (Pennycook 2009) index a shift in the Thai rap community …

How Can Sovereign States Embrace Hospitality? A Study Of The Ius Gentium Tradition And Expulsions Of Immigrants At The Border, Pedro Rodríguez-Ponga Jan 2024

How Can Sovereign States Embrace Hospitality? A Study Of The Ius Gentium Tradition And Expulsions Of Immigrants At The Border, Pedro Rodríguez-Ponga

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Migration management reflects the inescapable dialectic between immigrants’ human rights and the rights of sovereign states to control their arrival. This article focuses on two disciplines to shed some light on the dialectic: philosophy and law. The first section presents the primary authors within the ius gentium tradition that dealt with the arrival of strangers to a political community. The lens through which this article analyses these authors’ contribution is hospitality, calling for the adequate treatment the stranger deserves while considering the host community’s moral value. The second section examines the cutting-edge issue of pushback practices at the European external …

A Step In The Right Direction: Artificial Intelligence Inventorship, Nathan Elmer Jan 2024

A Step In The Right Direction: Artificial Intelligence Inventorship, Nathan Elmer

Saint Louis University Law Journal

The intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and patent law has sparked debates regarding the inventorship status of AI-assisted creations. This article examines the USPTO’s 2024 “Inventorship Guidance for AI-Assisted Inventions,” which affirms that AI systems cannot be inventors, as only natural persons can conceive inventions under U.S. law. By emphasizing human contribution as essential for patent eligibility, the Guidance draws on existing principles reinforcing that AI systems are tools rather than inventors. This article argues that the Guidance is a step in the right direction balancing the need to encourage technological innovation while also aligning with statutory language and judicial …

The Trial Of The Jurors - A Commentary On 12 Angry Men, Jonathan Van Patten Jan 2024

The Trial Of The Jurors - A Commentary On 12 Angry Men, Jonathan Van Patten

Faculty Publications

The movie, 12 Angry Men, is a fictionalized portrayal of a deliberation in a murder case from inside the jury room.  It provides a memorable treatment of the difficulty of deciding a case solely on the evidence admitted, as well as illuminating the dynamics of argument, emotion, and persuasion, particularly where deep-seated passions preclude honest evaluation of the evidence.

A Binary Integer Linear Programming Model For Optimizing Underground Stope Layout, Theophilus Mensah Jan 2024

A Binary Integer Linear Programming Model For Optimizing Underground Stope Layout, Theophilus Mensah

Masters Theses

"Underground mine planning engineers face significant challenges when determining what geometry provides the most profitable and safe stope for extraction. Several techniques and optimization algorithms have been developed in recent years, but most fail to find optimal solutions because they are heuristic or LP-based without efficient geometric constraints. This thesis work proposes a two-dimensional binary linear programming (BILP) model for determining the optimal combination of blocks in a stope that maximizes the economic value of the layout of stopes for a sublevel deposit. The work draws from Queyranne and Wolsey’s (2017 & 2018) formulations of tight constraints for bounded up/down …

Theses & ETDs

This thesis presents SEVA, a prototype mobile app designed to enhance the visibility and economic opportunities of Indian artisans by facilitating the sale of their products to a diverse audience in the United States. The Sanskrit word "seva" translates to "selfless service" or "voluntary work" in English. It embodies the concept of serving others without expecting anything in return, often rooted in spiritual or cultural practices aimed at fostering compassion, community, and personal growth. SEVA is designed to appeal to American audiences by featuring comprehensive artisan profiles that provide contact information, artwork portfolios, and details about their specific art styles. …

Intentional Parenthood, Contingent Fetal Personhood, And The Right To Reproductive Self-Determination, Laura D. Hermer Jan 2024

Intentional Parenthood, Contingent Fetal Personhood, And The Right To Reproductive Self-Determination, Laura D. Hermer

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues that intent should govern legal parenthood, regardless of the method of conception, the person’s biological or genetic relationship to the resulting embryo/fetus, or the person’s gender. This proposition is not new. This Article adds to scholarly discourse by extending the concept: Intent should not just determine parenthood, but also fetal rights. When a pregnant person establishes their procreational intent (or lack thereof) prior to birth, then both the existence (or lack thereof) of legal protections for the embryo/fetus and the gestator’s rights and duties (or lack thereof) should flow from this intent. Non-gestating gamete contributors would do …

Fundamental Chemical Kinetic Experiments Of Combustion Products Inside A Shock Tube, Alex-Abraham Pothen Jan 2024

Fundamental Chemical Kinetic Experiments Of Combustion Products Inside A Shock Tube, Alex-Abraham Pothen

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

The use of lateral divert thrusters on hypersonic vehicles would allow for fine-tuned attitude control at high Mach numbers. However, the jet interaction effects of lateral thrusters on the hypersonic flow field have not been investigated thoroughly. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can provide preliminary modeling of the jet interaction, but several variables such as vehicle geometry, velocity, and altitude, result in computationally expensive modeling or loss in accuracy of the results. Therefore, the goal of chemical kinetics testing and chemical model verification is to enhance the fidelity of the jet interaction effects, specifically the plume reaction with air and the …
