Speaking Like A Judge: Using Artificial Intelligence To Empirically Assess Judicialspeech In Supreme Court Of Canada Hearings By Language Spoken And Gender Of The Speaker, Simon Wallace Jan 2024

Speaking Like A Judge: Using Artificial Intelligence To Empirically Assess Judicialspeech In Supreme Court Of Canada Hearings By Language Spoken And Gender Of The Speaker, Simon Wallace

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

So much is known about SCOTUS oral hearings, so little is known about SCC oral hearings. Why? The answer at least partly turns on the availability of evidence: Americans have ready access to transcripts of Supreme Court hearings and Canadians do not. This project addresses that challenge by introducing an artificial intelligence-based approach to transcribe the SCC’s 2021-2022 oral arguments, enabling detailed empirical analyses of some of the speaking patterns of justices. To demonstrate potential research avenues, it explores two questions: which judges speak the most and which of the two offıcial languages do they speak? The research here shows …

Beyond The Numbers: Statistical And Data Literacy, Domain Literacy And Supreme Court Of Canada Data Analytics, Jena Mcgill, Amy Salyzyn

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

There is growing interest in using data analytics to identify patterns or trends in the work or behaviour of a court or judge. As more analytics-generated information about courts and judges is pumped into public discourse, questions arise about what it takes for stakeholders — both those producing or generating judicial analytics outputs, and those relying on and attempting to make sense of analytics outputs — to properly engage with that data. In this paper, we identify two related but distinct kinds of literacy required for meaningful and responsible engagement with judicial analytics outputs: (1) data and statistical literacy, that …

Safety First: The Hidden Curriculum Of Whiteness In Race-Conscious Professional Learning, James Noonan, Ashley Carey, Hilary Lustick, Peter Piazza Jan 2024

Safety First: The Hidden Curriculum Of Whiteness In Race-Conscious Professional Learning, James Noonan, Ashley Carey, Hilary Lustick, Peter Piazza

Education Faculty Publications

Applying the analytic lens of critical whiteness, we examine the relationship between facilitation structures and the quality of racial dialogue in educator professional development. We draw on data from a five-session virtual ‘antiracist reading group’ in a rapidly diversifying U.S. district, convened and facilitated by a White district leader. Observed discussions tended towards the superficial and did little to challenge participants’ existing worldviews. We argue that the leader’s facilitation decisions characterised a ‘hidden curriculum’ of safety and comfort that inhibited participants’ development. These moves were further shaped by and reified persistent manifestations of whiteness. We offer implications for the facilitation …

Two Decades Of Design Research On Lessons-Learned Systems: A Systematic Review And Future Research Agenda, Benjamin X. Hou, Omar F. El-Gayar Jan 2024

Two Decades Of Design Research On Lessons-Learned Systems: A Systematic Review And Future Research Agenda, Benjamin X. Hou, Omar F. El-Gayar

Research & Publications

Lessons learned systems (LLS) are knowledge management systems (KMS) that collect, verify, store, disseminate, and enable the reuse of experiential knowledge created during the execution of organizational activities. Despite this promise, many scholars have noted that many LLS fail to properly manage their intellectual capital. While behavioral and organizational factors contribute to the success or failure of any IT system, their design is also a critical consideration. Here, a systematic literature review is helpful for understanding the current state of knowledge on LLS design research though to the best of our knowledge, none exists as past reviews have focused on …

“Rise Up, O Light Of The Lord”: An Appropriate And Defensible Etymology For Cumorah, Paul Hoskisson Jan 2024

“Rise Up, O Light Of The Lord”: An Appropriate And Defensible Etymology For Cumorah, Paul Hoskisson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This article explores issues with past suggestions concerning the etymology of the name Cumorah and suggests a slightly updated etymology, “Rise up, O Light of the Lord.” It then suggests that Book of Mormon references to the Hill Cumorah appear to confirm the proposed etymology, thus becoming an apt description of the Restoration.

The astronaut had to act quickly. Once he cut through the bag, water would swim around the cabin, suspended in the antigravity. If the astronaut wanted good tea, he had to be precise. He’d been sent into outer space three days ago; satellites reported massive, unknown masses moving steadily closer to Earth, and at the speed they were progressing, scientists decided they couldn’t be ignored. It was the astronaut’s job to obliterate the asteroids “by whatever means necessary.” If it took crashing his spaceship straight through the rocks, the astronaut knew that was his duty.

Liberty Jail: Seedbed For Eternal Temple Blessings, Steven L. Olsen Jan 2024

Liberty Jail: Seedbed For Eternal Temple Blessings, Steven L. Olsen

BYU Studies

The difficult Missouri winter of 1838–39 exacerbated an emerging existential crisis for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its founding prophet, Joseph Smith. Latter-day Saints were being driven from their homes and killed by armed militias who justified their aggression with the “extermination order” of Governor Lilburn W. Boggs. This forced evacuation also dispossessed the Latter-day Saints of their “land of promise” and “center place of Zion”—the capital of their millennial utopia that was named for the primordial patriarch Enoch’s “City of Holiness,” whose inhabitants’ righteousness was sufficient, according to Joseph’s visions, to effect its translation into …

I drove myself to my driving test. In fact, I had been driving illegally in Saudi Arabia for over two years. Though the crown prince had lifted the ban on women drivers, no kingdom guidance existed for women—especially non-Saudi women—to obtain a driver’s license. Women were given the green light to drive, but were never shown how to put their foot on the pedal.

Ai Voice Enters The Copyright Regime: Proposal Of A Three-Part Framework, Prachi Patel

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

We are told that our voice is one of the most powerful tools we have. However, is it just as powerful if it can be replicated? Artificial intelligence has developed to the point where it can create an exact clone of a person’s voice. While there have been many advancements in this field, there are few laws that address artificial intelligence and its use. Artificial intelligence has been used to create artificial voices of well-known figures, both deceased and alive, some without their consent. This creates a need to balance the incentivization of technological development and the protection of an …

26. Working Alongside, Not Against, Ai Writing Tools In The Composition Classroom: A Dialectical Retrospective, Daniel Frank, Jennifer K. Johnson

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions

This article presents a dialectical retrospective on thoughtfully integrating Generate AI tools such as ChatGPT into composition classrooms. Drawing on their experiences and research, the authors outline key principles for using AI as a supplemental aid rather than a replacement for student writing, promoting academic integrity, and fostering critical perspectives on the technology's capabilities and limitations. They share experimental classroom activities and assignments that engage students in hands-on exploration and reflection on their AI-assisted writing processes. Student responses reveal nuanced engagement with the tools to support rather than shortcut learning. The authors argue that attempting to simply prohibit AI use …

6. More Is Less?: Using Generative Ai For Idea Generation And Diversification In Early Writing Processes, Franziska Tsufim, Lainie Pomerleau

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions

As writing teachers, we are strong proponents of process writing. At the same time, we are aware that early process work, especially in a group setting, can be time consuming and anxiety-inducing. Students may also self-censor when sharing work with peers especially if they are not confident in their ideas. Drawing on the process of nominal, electronic brainstorming, we created two different prompts that allowed students to incorporate generative Al into their idea generation process. This first activity improves the efficiency of individual idea generation, while the second exercise helps increase student confidence in their ideas in collaborative brainstorming situations. …

Implementation Of A Nonpharmacological Sleep Bundle In A Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Kristen Talvacchia Jan 2024

Implementation Of A Nonpharmacological Sleep Bundle In A Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Kristen Talvacchia

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Critically ill patients admitted to the ICU frequently experience sleep disturbances. Sleep can be promoted in the ICU by adjusting the patient's environment to lessen noise, light, and patient care interruptions. Given the potential impact of sleep disturbances in both the acute and long-term, promoting quality sleep should be considered an essential component of providing care to patients admitted to the ICU. This DNP project aimed to identify whether implementing a nonpharmacological sleep bundle in a SICU improved patients' perceived sleep quality, as evidenced by their Richards Campbell Sleep Questionnaire scores. The Donabedian model is the theoretical framework that guided …

The Semiotics Of Smell: Gender, Materiality, And The Language Of Fragrances, Kathryn Copeland Jan 2024

The Semiotics Of Smell: Gender, Materiality, And The Language Of Fragrances, Kathryn Copeland

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Fragrances have long been used in a variety of cultures to communicate or articulate perceptions of different types of people or personae (Classen, Howes, & Synnott; 1994); however, the meanings “articulated” by fragrances have rarely been studied through the analytical frameworks of indexicality, enregisterment, and materiality (Eckert, 2008; Johnstone, 2016; Miller, 2005; Silverstein, 2003).

To do this, I first conducted a quantitative corpus analysis of user-generated reviews of popular perfumes on the fragrance database Fragrantica to identify differences in how reviewers of “men’s” fragrances and “women’s” fragrances describe their experience with the fragrances, and what these patterns indicate about how …

A Computational Investigation Of English Spelling, John Winstead Jan 2024

A Computational Investigation Of English Spelling, John Winstead

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This thesis examines the predictability and regularity of English orthography through computational methods. The primary objective is to use n-gram models to predict missing letters in English words by exploiting contextual information from adjacent letters. The study evaluates the impact of dataset size, word length, letter position, and vowel presence on the predictive accuracy of these models, uncovering patterns and structures inherent to English spelling.

The research utilizes a range of datasets, including the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary, the Brown Corpus, the Corpus of Late Modern English Texts, the Lampeter Corpus of Early Modern English Tracts, and the Open …

Caffeine is a popular ergogenic aid that has a plethora of evidence highlighting its positive effects. A Google Scholar search using the keywords “caffeine” and “exercise” yields over 200,000 results, emphasizing the extensive research on this topic. However, despite the vast amount of available data, it is intriguing that uncertainties persist regarding the effectiveness and safety of caffeine. These include but are not limited to: 1. Does caffeine dehydrate you at rest? 2. Does caffeine dehydrate you during exercise? 3. Does caffeine promote the loss of body fat? 4. Does habitual caffeine consumption influence the performance response to acute caffeine …
