Impact Of Evidence-Based Interventions On Nurse Burnout Among Ambulatory Care Nurses, Haley M. Lupher Jan 2024

Impact Of Evidence-Based Interventions On Nurse Burnout Among Ambulatory Care Nurses, Haley M. Lupher

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background: The physical and emotional demands of the nursing profession often cause increased stress and burnout in nurses. If burnout is not addressed, the negative consequences of burnout are perpetuated by one another. Evidence-based interventions, such as meditation, yoga, and physical activity can help reduce nurse burnout.
Local Problem: This project was completed at an ambulatory dermatology clinic that sees approximately 300 patients a day. In recent years, this department has noticed increased nurse turnover and low nurse morale.
Methods: A convenience sample from approximately 30 nurses was utilized. Burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Medical Personnel …

Nurses' Knowledge, Confidence, And Compliance With An Ambulatory Surgery Discharge Checklist, Heather Van Marion Jan 2024

Nurses' Knowledge, Confidence, And Compliance With An Ambulatory Surgery Discharge Checklist, Heather Van Marion

Implementation Of An Oral Sucrose Protocol For Advanced Practice Providers, Cori Shatto

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background/Purpose: Pain in infancy due to immunization administration often goes untreated. The pain infants experience leads to negative effects on neurodevelopment and pain response. Needle fear develops in infancy and can extend into adulthood, leading to vaccine avoidance and endemic outbreaks. Methods: In a family practice clinic in an upper Midwest state, an oral sucrose protocol was implemented for use by advanced practice providers (APPs). Prior to education on the protocol, a survey was administered to assess the providers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) in relation to oral sucrose. The providers were educated on the benefits and intended use of …

Implementation Of A Daily Protocol To Reduce Central Line Days On A Medical-Surgical Unit, Katherine Wickstrom Jan 2024

Implementation Of A Daily Protocol To Reduce Central Line Days On A Medical-Surgical Unit, Katherine Wickstrom

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background: Central line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are preventable healthcare associated infections (HAI) in the United States. CLABSIs are associated with increased length of hospital stays, mortality, and financial implications for both patients and hospital systems. Extensive research has shown implementing CLABSI prevention bundles can reduce infections and costs. These bundles are often misused, highlighting the importance of bundle compliance and education.
Local Problem: A medical surgical unit in the upper Midwest continues to have delayed central line removal despite a CLABSI prevention bundle. Efforts to decrease central line days were identified as a priority.
Methods: Staff completed education on …

Reducing Emergency Department Decision To Admit To Disposition Time Using The Sydney Triage To Admission Risk Tool, Jolyn Sackmann Jan 2024

Reducing Emergency Department Decision To Admit To Disposition Time Using The Sydney Triage To Admission Risk Tool, Jolyn Sackmann

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background: Long emergency department (ED) length of stay (LOS) is associated with increased mortality, delay in care, longer inpatient (IP) stays, readmission risk, poor patient satisfaction, and opportunity for error. Within the ED LOS is a quality indicator measuring the time a provider determines a patient will be admitted to the time the patient leaves the ED for an IP unit, called ED-2. Prolonged ED-2 indicates impaired ED output.
/="/">Local Problem: Despite previous interventions, the ED-2 at a rural Midwest hospital was about 63.5 minutes; the goal set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid is 35 minutes …

A Biblical Framework For Understanding And Responding To Ai, David J. Mulder Jan 2024

A Biblical Framework For Understanding And Responding To Ai, David J. Mulder

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This chapter is about developing a biblically informed, theologically sound perspective on what it means to be human in a world where artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be omnipresent and nearly omnipotent. Along the way, we will consider the history of AI, the current state of AI, and a biblical view of AI. However, to land in a place where we have some solid understanding of a biblically informed perspective on the role of technology, we need to begin with our own imaginations.

Evaluation Of Information Visualization In Digital Intelligence Product, Dejan Ulcej, Anja Podlesek Jan 2024

Evaluation Of Information Visualization In Digital Intelligence Product, Dejan Ulcej, Anja Podlesek

Journal of Strategic Security

Digital technology has impacted how strategic intelligence products are designed and distributed to political security decisionmakers. Information visualization helps improve the processing of intelligence information. This experimental study investigated whether a prototype digital intelligence report that uses visuals is processed more efficiently and results in a better user experience than a printed intelligence product that contains primarily text. A sample of 72 participants working as decisionmakers in a private company was divided into two equal groups. One group received the digital version of the report, and the other received the printed version. The time it took to read the report, …

Analyzing Archive Transit Multibeam Data For Nodule Occurrences, Mark E. Mussett, David F. Naar, David W. Caress, Tracey A. Conrad, Alastair G. C. Graham, Max Kaufmann, Marcia Maia

Marine Science Faculty Publications

We show that analyzing archived and future multibeam backscatter and bathymetry data, in tandem with regional environmental parameters, can help to identify polymetallic nodule fields in the world’s oceans. Extensive archived multibeam transit data through remote areas of the world’s oceans are available for data mining. New multibeam data will be made available through the Seabed 2030 Project. Uniformity of along- and across-track backscatter, backscatter intensity, angular response, water depth, nearby ground-truth data, local slope, sedimentation rate, and seafloor age provide thresholds for discriminating areas that are permissive to nodule presence. A case study of this methodology is presented, using …

The Cypress Dome 2024, Issue 35, The Cypress Dome Society

The Cypress Dome

The Cypress Dome Society (CDS) offers an outlet for artists at UCF. We chose to name ourselves after the beautiful cypress dome ecosystem that exists on the UCF campus. In the same way that cypress domes create an environment based in biodiversity and rich land, we hope to foster a space that promotes diversity and rich creative work for students. We set our roots in the deepest parts of the literary community and surround ourselves with students eager to participate in the arts. Every year, we engage with our community by encouraging students to submit to our literary magazine, The …

Cash Substitution And Deferred Consumption As Data Breach Harms, Lisa Yao Liu, Lior Jacob Strahilevitz Jan 2024

Cash Substitution And Deferred Consumption As Data Breach Harms, Lisa Yao Liu, Lior Jacob Strahilevitz

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Federal courts have long been divided over whether consumers whose data are breached suffer an “injury in fact” that gives them standing to sue under Article III of the United States Constitution. Judicial opinions find no constitutional standing in a narrow majority of such cases, and plaintiffs are likely to lose absent causal links to subsequent identity theft or the disclosure of embarrassing information. Consumers whose data are breached thus are left without a federal remedy, and firms’ incentives to invest in data security are diminished. Our paper identifies a novel injury that results from data breaches. Upon learning about …

The Design Of Emission Taxes In Markets With New Firm Acquisitions, Luis Gautier, Mahelet G. Fikru Jan 2024

The Design Of Emission Taxes In Markets With New Firm Acquisitions, Luis Gautier, Mahelet G. Fikru

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the 1990s there was a great deal of interest in the study of the role of endogenous market structure under oligopoly in the characterization of emission taxes. This interest was instrumental in providing policy guidance on the design of emission taxes based on market characteristics. However, the literature has been silent on offering policy recommendations on the design of emission taxes under endogenous market structure in the presence of new firm acquisitions. We build a model where new firms enter the market where some are acquired by an incumbent multi-plant firm, altering the initial market structure. In this framework, …

The Sweep And Force Of Section Three, William Baude, Michael Paulsen Jan 2024

The Sweep And Force Of Section Three, William Baude, Michael Paulsen

Articles

Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment forbids holding office by former office holders who then participate in insurrection or rebellion. Because of a range of misperceptions and mistaken assumptions, Section Three’s full legal consequences have not been appreciated or enforced. This Article corrects those mistakes by setting forth the full sweep and force of Section Three.

First, Section Three remains an enforceable part of the Constitution, not limited to the Civil War, and not effectively repealed by nineteenth century amnesty legislation. Second, Section Three is self-executing, operating as an immediate disqualification from office, without the need for additional action by …

Constraining Constitution-Making, Adam Chilton, Cristián Eyzaguirre, David Landau, Mila Versteeg Jan 2024

Constraining Constitution-Making, Adam Chilton, Cristián Eyzaguirre, David Landau, Mila Versteeg

Articles

Whether constitution-making should be constrained has long been debated, but little is known about whether it is possible. We make several contributions to this question. We start by providing a typology of three types of constraints on constitution- making: Substantive, Procedural, and Institutional. We next develop a positive theory of when these constraints are likely to influence drafters’ behavior. We then use a mixed-methods approach to explore these ideas in the context of Chile’s constitutional reform process. In a survey experiment conducted in Chile before citizens voted on the draft constitution, we find that most respondents supported constraints in the …

The New Outlawry, Darrell Miller, Jacob Charles Jan 2024

The New Outlawry, Darrell Miller, Jacob Charles

Articles

From subtle shifts in the procedural mechanics of self-defense doctrine to substantive expansions of justified lethal force, legislatures are delegating larger amounts of “violence work” to the private sphere. These regulatory innovations layer on top of existing rules that broadly authorize private violence—both defensive and offensive—for self- protection and the ostensible maintenance of law and order. Yet such significant authority for private violence, and the values it projects, can have tragic real-world consequences, especially for marginalized communities and people of color.

We argue that these expansions of private violence tap into an ancient form of social control—outlawry: the removal of …

The Natural Law Origins Of Private And Public Law, Richard Epstein Jan 2024

The Natural Law Origins Of Private And Public Law, Richard Epstein

Articles

This article attempts to counter the widespread skepticism that surrounds any appeal to natural law principles, starting with Roman law at one end and the appeal to general law under Swift v. Tyson on the other. It steers a systematic middle course between moral absolutism, which treats all relationships as fixed and immutable, and modern realist positions that insist the infinite variety of legal approaches to most legal problems proves that there is no solid core to either natural law or general law. The natural law positions set out the basic relationships for marriage and family, for alluvion and avulsion …
