Implementing The Self-Assessment Melanoma Risk Scoring In Primary Care, Amanda D. Hays Jan 2024

Implementing The Self-Assessment Melanoma Risk Scoring In Primary Care, Amanda D. Hays

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent yet treatable cancers. Head-to-toe skin assessments are recommended for high-risk patients. However, there is no universal risk-scoring method. At a suburban primary care clinic, providers revealed concerns about the overall lack of skin exams conducted. At this practice there is no skin assessment protocol in place for any group of patients, and skin exams are seldom performed unless prompted by a patient’s request. This quality improvement project evaluated the success of using the Self Assessment for Melanoma (SAMScore) to determine high-risk patients and the subsequent completion of a head-to-toe skin assessment and …

Public And Private Fiduciaries: Representation In States, Corporations, Trusts And Agents, Katharine Jackson Jan 2024

Public And Private Fiduciaries: Representation In States, Corporations, Trusts And Agents, Katharine Jackson

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Over the past decade, political and legal theorists began conscripting private fiduciary law to delimit and define the duties of public officials. While enlisting additional legal prophylactics against arbitrary government may have appeared especially appealing during a Trump administration characterized by corruption and racism, this Article argues that straightforwardly applying fiduciary doctrine to political office is risky business. While scholars rightly point out the long, cross-pollinated history of the law of public and private trust, and while they recognize that rules against self-dealing fiduciaries apply equally well to both public and private officials, they occlude an important conceptual difference between …

It's Worse If Superman Does It: Perceptions Of Moral Transgressions Committed By Superheroes And Supervillains, Justin Martin, Hansika Kapoor Jan 2024

It's Worse If Superman Does It: Perceptions Of Moral Transgressions Committed By Superheroes And Supervillains, Justin Martin, Hansika Kapoor

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Superheroes are distinguished from supervillains due to their morally relevant behavior. However, what happens when they both engage in immoral behavior? This study examined how individuals perceive moral transgressions by their favorite superhero/villain in a quasi-experimental design. In line with Social Cognitive Domain Theory and Moral Foundations Theory, transgressions related to harm and justice were assessed. Specifically, participants (N = 363, predominantly White/Caucasian and South Asian) assessed characters’ likability, character traits, and moral evaluations. In line with hypotheses, results suggested that (a) superheroes were liked more than supervillains; (b) transgressions by superheroes were more morally impermissible than those by supervillains, …

Ocr Of Greek, Chloe Jones Jan 2024

Ocr Of Greek, Chloe Jones

Theses & ETDs

The goal of this thesis is to create a program which is capable of transliterating Greek manuscripts. An existing Transformer-based Optical Character Recognition (TrOCR) software was identified which is able to be trained on provided datasets. The model requires images of individual lines for its training data. This thesis deals with the effort to convert images which contain one to two pages of a manuscript into a series of images each containing a single line of text. The images are first preprocessed, being binarized and having OpenCV’s morphological filters applied. Using linear regression, it is then determined how many columns …

Confrontation In The Backlands: An Approach To Mario Vargas Llosa’S The War Of The End Of The World, Christian Wing

Theses & ETDs

How does one show a society in crisis? What is the separation between history and fiction? Mario Vargas Llosa’s novel The War of the End of the World, is aimed at providing at least the basis for an answer. This novel is a fictional retelling of the real-life Canudos War, based on Euclides Da Cunha’s Os Sertões. The Canudos War (1896-1897) was a conflict in which Canudos, an autonomous religious commune, was completely wiped out in a war with the First Brazilian Republic. After first providing historical background, this paper examines Os Sertões as well as more contemporary perspectives on …

Integrative Arts: They’Re Everywhere, Phynyx Soltis-Tatro Jan 2024

Integrative Arts: They’Re Everywhere, Phynyx Soltis-Tatro

Theses & ETDs

Frequently throughout human history, we question the nature of prominent concepts and ideas present in our lives. One such concept is that of the nature of art. Throughout my education, starting in high school and continuing at New College, I have been pursuing the notion of integrative and interconnected artistic ideals. While this has been a growing and ongoing study, the process came into focus last year during the conception of my fully original stage musical. This musical is called Symphony of A Survivor, and creating it provided me with an opportunity to experience the complexity of art firsthand. During …

This thesis aims to study my training in dance, theatre, and statistics as performance. The goal is to cover aspects of my life that led me to where I am today. From dancing at a small studio in a town no one has heard of, to performing a dance routine in a community theatre performance, as well as other performance training and experiences. I have gained a lot of valuable knowledge and techniques. In theatre, I immersed myself in a play as an ensemble member and took hands-on classes in college to gain theatrical experience as well. Post-Traumatic Growth From Primary And Secondary Trauma By Finding Meaning Within Narrative, Shelby Nagle Jan 2024

Post-Traumatic Growth From Primary And Secondary Trauma By Finding Meaning Within Narrative, Shelby Nagle

Theses & ETDs

The present research focuses on lived and inherited trauma through analysis of self-report skills such as mentalization, cognitive emotion regulation, and demonstration of narrative construction. What is the relationship between caregiver trauma and scores of mentalization and cognitive emotion regulation? How does attachment play a role in the way an individual can identify benefits from inherited and lived trauma? Is identifying benefits associated with reduced depression and anxiety symptoms? To answer these questions, narratives were gathered within a survey constructed of self-report inventories and free-response questions. Data analysis determined a positive correlation between participants’ scores of parental trauma and scores …

The King Penguin: Growth In Writing, Isaac Tellechea Jan 2024

The King Penguin: Growth In Writing, Isaac Tellechea

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is composed of two sections: a collection of original short stories and poetry titled The King Penguin and a subsequent reflection on the creation of these works. The project as a whole serves as a space for an aspiring writer to execute an original literary idea and learn from the experience. The King Penguin attempts to de-automate the reading process by deviating from the traditional left-to-right structure of text, using multimedia components as a way to encourage the reader to engage with the works actively. The reflection focuses primarily on the intentions behind certain decisions made throughout the …

With The Flowers: A Collection Of Music Throughout My Time At New College, Samuel Worthington Jan 2024

With The Flowers: A Collection Of Music Throughout My Time At New College, Samuel Worthington

Theses & ETDs

“With the Flowers” is a collection of works throughout my time at New College (2021-2024) that I sought to pair with various types of drawing and photography work to emphasize this spontaneity, as well as a longing for what I and many others once had here. These techniques include: the use of nostalgic and gloomy chord progressions to portray this feeling of longing, rhythmic variance and syncopation to maintain momentum and spontaneity within the track, downsampling the original audio or midi to produce a glitchy feeling, duplication and trial and error with mixing of audio and midi tracks, drawing and …

Cracked Reality: The Theater Of Chaos And Accessibility In Academia: Building A More Inclusive And Less Intimidating Environment, Remy Katz Jan 2024

Cracked Reality: The Theater Of Chaos And Accessibility In Academia: Building A More Inclusive And Less Intimidating Environment, Remy Katz

Theses & ETDs

Absurdist humor and horror is the only way to survive in the nonsensical world. Situational comedy, irony, and the macabre; this is the essence of the world of spontaneity. My work is fueled by the need to provoke unsettling emotions, leaving audiences to sit and digest feelings of discomfort and joy in the catharsis of humor. I mean, what’s more funny than watching someone have a mental breakdown? Like, come on, you’re not special, all of us are freaks. SO, I’m a bit of a freak. I like building on ideas as I produce art, feeding my emotions into all …

Chronic disease is also on the rise in several countries, and the imminent threat of disease for many young adults is overbearing. The stress that this worry brings can often lead to heightened cortisol levels in …

Catullus’ Lesbia: A Study Of Translation, Christopher Coon Jan 2024

Catullus’ Lesbia: A Study Of Translation, Christopher Coon

Theses & ETDs

This thesis investigates the context of Catullus’ love poetry through a translation in the style of the pre-19th century philological tradition of poetic translation in the mode of English Iambic verse. The shortfalls of the earlier centuries are in their dilution of vulgarity for the sake of propriety, not for the form of the translation. This Thesis examines the possibility of translation Catullus’ love poetry accurately and in an analogous and metrical form. This thesis uses the Iamb as the primary foot of translation, not just because of its long-lasting impact on English verse but also due to its origins, …

Home On The Grange: Ethnobotanical Entrevues In Outaouais, Michael Bolesh Jan 2024

Home On The Grange: Ethnobotanical Entrevues In Outaouais, Michael Bolesh

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is based on two months of ethnographic research on a farm/apothecary homestead in Outaouais, Québec. There I strived to unearth the approaches both botanical and market employed by Twin Lakes Apothecary to better understand and contextualize the contemporary manifestations of ethnobotany in Québec. I pursued this primarily through a participant-observer approach in which I opportunistically followed networks of exchange and information to gradually traverse the life history of products and people at the apothecary. In examining the apothecary through such a lens, I illuminate the mythos and notions of production and validity in sectors often described as organic, …

Reading As An Adventure: How Individualization In English Classrooms Uplifts Students, Scruffs O'Neil

Theses & ETDs

Students deserve to have classrooms designed with their holistic needs in mind. Teachers should utilize pedagogical research to deliberately design their classrooms in a way that empowers student success. Structuring a classroom with these sentiments in mind reveals the benefits to students that pedagogically and psychologically sound educational activities provide. This thesis attempts to implement the pedagogical approach of active learning by developing a unit that relies on Reading Groups and Socratic Seminars. Reading Groups offer students the unique opportunity to engage with their choice in text; a common barrier for students in finding motivation for class readings. Additionally, Reading …
