Rahab And The Perpetuation Of Deliverance, Amy H. Fisher Jan 2024

Rahab And The Perpetuation Of Deliverance, Amy H. Fisher

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Deliverance is clearly the major theme of the memorable Exodus story, but the Exodus is not the only Old Testament account that teaches profound lessons about God’s redemption. The story of Rahab—the woman of Jericho—is situated in relation to the Exodus through shared images and narrative elements to highlight additional insights about God’s power to save. Specifically, the Rahab story shows that God continues in the temporal, collective delivery of his covenant people even after Egypt. God is also interested in both the temporal and spiritual deliverance of individuals, as shown in the life of Rahab herself. Finally, the story …

Embody The Cause: Subaltern Body Protests As Resistance Tactics, Dipakshi Sarma Jan 2024

Embody The Cause: Subaltern Body Protests As Resistance Tactics, Dipakshi Sarma

Political Science Honors Projects

Gendered, classed, and racialized bodies differentially experience state-sanctioned violence and societal norms. Body protests — when the body manifests the political messages by drawing attention to itself — manifest in these intersections. Women engaging in body protests garner more attention; a body that is sexualized, controlled, and subjugated draws attention to itself as a political act. To understand this, I ask, what explains the specific tactics that women employ in acts of political resistance? By employing subaltern agency and feminist social movement theories, I use process tracing and comparative analysis of three body protest cases: the incarcerated Armagh women in …

The Future Of State Standing And The Controversial Massachusetts V. Epa Decision: United States V. Texas And Biden V. Nebraska Provide Mixed Signals, Bradford Mank Jan 2024

The Future Of State Standing And The Controversial Massachusetts V. Epa Decision: United States V. Texas And Biden V. Nebraska Provide Mixed Signals, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

An important question is under what circumstances should states have standing to sue the federal government. Should states have greater standing rights than private parties to protect states’ unique interests, or should all parties in federal courts have the same standing rights? In its 2007 decision Massachusetts v. EPA, the Supreme Court in a divided five-to-four decision stated that states are entitled to “special solicitude” for Article III standing in suits in federal courts, but a dissenting opinion argued that states ought to have the same standing rights as other parties in federal court. While Massachusetts initially appeared to …

Studying The Effects Of Score Differential On Offensive Output When Evaluating Team Performance In Soccer, Ahmet Cemek Jan 2024

Studying The Effects Of Score Differential On Offensive Output When Evaluating Team Performance In Soccer, Ahmet Cemek

Theses & ETDs

Soccer match statistics can be deceptive due to their tendency to oversimplify complex game dynamics. This simplistic aggregation often obscures critical contextual nuances when assessing performance potentially resulting in misleading interpretations. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a notable instance occurred in the France- England Quarterfinal game. Although France won, a closer examination of the game statistics might suggest that England was the better team: 16 to 8 shot attempts, 8 to 5 shots on target, 5 corners to France’s 2, resulting in a 1-2 loss. However, France maintained the lead for over 50 minutes and adopted a defensive stance …

Community Impact: Murals & Public Art, Annie Dong

Theses & ETDs

This thesis project integrates social practice and multiculturalism theory with public art murals and involves producing art in both gallery spaces and public spaces resulting in two large mural installations that examine the benefits that public art and social activism have on communities, drawing inspiration from artists including Judy Baca and Michelle Angela Ortiz. Through this work, I examine both the role of public murals as a catalyst for community building as well as the impact of adolescent participation in the creation of community murals on their well-being using the Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Theory (BPNS). As part of the …

El Cimarronaje: An Ethnomusical Album That Channels The Survival Of Black Dominican Culture And History, Magdelyn W Veras R Jan 2024

El Cimarronaje: An Ethnomusical Album That Channels The Survival Of Black Dominican Culture And History, Magdelyn W Veras R

Theses & ETDs

This thesis challenges the denials of blackness as well as the anti-blackness and anti- Haitian sentiments that prevail in the Dominican society, while also addressing the Spanish-Taino only descendant narrative. It does so through EL CIMARRONAJE, a musical album that fusions Afro-Dominican rhythms with other musical styles. EL CIMARRONAJE itself, intends to demonstrate in this essay how Afro-Dominican culture and history have survived through these rhythms. This thesis starts by tracing their history in the first chapter; while in the second chapter, it highlights the different aspects of how EL CIMARRONAJE through its production in collaboration with traditional Dominican percussionists …

Revisiting Project Yi Jin, Shui Kau Chiu

School of General Education & Languages (THEi)

The Hong Kong government has administered new public management in the public sector to address the impact of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Under the dogma of efficiency, effectiveness, and economy, the government reexamined its expenditures in various areas. Higher education encountered financial strain after the government adjusted its funding for education. Meanwhile, many young people were unemployed or failed to pursue further studies. The government thus launched Project Yi Jin in 2000, authorizing qualified higher education providers to offer an unprecedented and selffinanced study path for young people to meet their educational needs. Although the project has been implemented …

An Expository Analysis Of Textbook Usage In Classical Settings For High School Biology, Kristen Bissontz

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

AN EXPOSITORY ANALYSIS OF TEXTBOOK USAGE IN CLASSICAL SETTINGS FOR HIGH SCHOOL BIOLOGY

Kristen Bissontz

Southeastern University, Lakeland FL

The classical model of education has reemerged as a viable alternative to the modern education system. Many of the disciplines taught in a classical school, program or home education scenario appear to align with the classical philosophy with the exception of the sciences. This paper serves to uncover if textbooks are the primary source in classical settings, what resources are utilized, and offers suggestions to better align with the classical pedagogy.

A small sample of classical schools and programs in a …

C.S. Lewis is unquestionably one of the more enduring influences in the 20th century, due in part to his personal popularity during his lifetime, as well as to his prolific and approachable oeuvre in wide-ranging genres such as apologetics, fiction, and public debate and address. Lewis has only become more popular since his death, with continued interest building after the more recent development of movie interpretations depicting both his fiction and life. C.S. Lewis’s corpus is certainly vast, and even more has been written about C.S. Lewis and his writings since his death. Strong scholarship exists, particularly in the areas …

BACKGROUND: Pedagogical approaches that support young people’s well-being and maximize their potential are among the Journal of School Health research priorities. A unique form of observational learning called biblioguidance could be a pedagogical approach.

METHODS: We, a team of researchers and teachers, implemented biblioguidance book clubs with 10th-grade health education students. While the initial focus was health literacy skills, we also aimed to generate psychosocial benefits. Those benefits are the focus of the current descriptive phenomenological research. A final book club reflection captured the benefits students received and documented their transformation. We randomly selected 42 reflections from the sample pool …

Developing A Conceptual Framework For Decolonizing Evaluation, Minji Cho Jan 2024

Developing A Conceptual Framework For Decolonizing Evaluation, Minji Cho

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The field of evaluation has been predominantly driven by Euro-Western perspectives, a result of their dominance in economic, geopolitical, and intellectual realms. This has led most evaluation approaches to be deeply rooted in Western worldviews. To avoid becoming instruments of neocolonialism, more decolonizing evaluation practices are necessary, emphasizing the needs of communities over the interests of donors. However, the field has a limited understanding of how decolonizing evaluation is being practiced and what the consequences are. The absence of clear guidance for decolonizing evaluation practices prevents evaluators from striving for more ethical practices. In response to these gaps, this dissertation …
