Burnout For General Surgeons, Luke Edwards, Lindsay Mckelvey
Burnout For General Surgeons, Luke Edwards, Lindsay Mckelvey
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: In the healthcare sector, burnout among surgeons has emerged as a critical issue, impacting both the well-being of medical professionals and the quality outcomes of patient care. Research has consistently shown that long hours, high workloads, demanding results, and mental fatigue make physicians more vulnerable to experiencing burnout than others. Studies have revealed alarming statistical rates, with a significant percentage of surgeons reporting physical exhaustion and mental health repercussions. This trend is further enhanced by the demanding nature of the medical environment, where work-related stress and burnout have become common concerns.
Purpose of the Study: The negative effects of …
The Benefits Of Medical Tetrahydrocannabinol On Glaucoma, Hunter Kane
The Benefits Of Medical Tetrahydrocannabinol On Glaucoma, Hunter Kane
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: This paper explores the potential therapeutic benefits of medical Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on glaucoma management, particularly in terms of intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction, ocular blood flow, and symptom management. Glaucoma, characterized by increased IOP and progressive optic nerve damage, is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. Current treatments focus on IOP control but may have inadequate efficacy or intolerable side effects, necessitating alternative approaches such as medical THC.
Methods: The study hypothesis posited that medical THC could significantly reduce IOP, enhance ocular blood flow, and improve symptom management in glaucoma patients. To test this hypothesis, a literature review supplemented by …

Portage, Wisconsin is a place defined by passing through it. It was once a major hub of passage, via river and canal, from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. Today, the town, home to just over 10,000 people, is little more than a distant suburb of the state capital, Madison, 35 miles to the south. On the drive up 91-North, billboards advertise Ho-Chunk casinos, water parks in the Wisconsin Dells, and the world’s largest Culver’s, a fast-food chain famous for its frozen custard. There are numerous roadside attractions: outside a gas station, a life-sized statue of a pink elephant …

Effect Of Monoclonal Antibodies Ma-33h1f7 And Ma-8h9d4 On Pai-1 In Cells Activated With Tgfβ, Srikar Modukuri
Biotechnology Theses
This study investigates the impact of monoclonal antibody treatment on plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) expression and secretion in transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) activated pleural human mesothelial cells. In this study, we examined total PAI-1 levels in conditioned media from human pleural mesothelial cells under various conditions using immunoblot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay techniques (ELISA). Specifically, we targeted PAI-1 with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) MA-33H1F7 and MA-8H9D4, which bind to unique epitopes on PAI-1. A reduction in PAI-1 levels was observed between control and antibody-treated cells by immunoblot analysis of cell conditioned media. ELISA results also revealed a reduction in total …

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
The U.S. Supreme Court's landmark 2021 decision in NCAA v. Alston has opened the door to serious consideration of the potential for college athlete unionization and collective bargaining. The ruling, highlighted by Justice Kavanaugh's concurring opinion, suggests collective bargaining as a potential solution to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's ("NCAA's") antitrust vulnerabilities. This Article delves into the initial legal and strategic questions surrounding the prospect of unionization, focusing particularly on NCAA Division I football and basketball, due to their significant revenue generation making them prime candidates for unionization efforts.
The National Labor Relations Board ("NLRB" or "Board") is positioned to …

The idea of a colorblind society and constitution is a dream, not reality. Importantly, the idea of colorblindness has been used to hijack laws and constitutional provisions specifically created to right societal wrongs against minoritized persons, especially Black persons. Take for example, the recent controversy surrounding affirmative action in higher education. The Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, both created to secure the rights of Black citizens, have been co-opted to instead deprive them of opportunities. The latest example of this is a Supreme Court case decided this past summer—Students …

To Go Boldly, Betsy Ceraso
To Go Boldly, Betsy Ceraso
Duquesne Law Review
It was an honor and a privilege working for Chief Justice Max Baer, whom I and most others in our chambers referred to as "the Judge." As a jurist, the Judge came to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania from the family court, and he brought with him an immediate and heartfelt sense of how the judicial system affects the vulnerable, particularly children. The Judge was the ever-dedicated public servant who thought it important not only to serve the people, but to give back by engaging with students and young lawyers to help shape the next generation of litigants and judges. …

Just Call Me Max, Maureen Lally-Green
Duquesne Law Review
Soon after Justice Max Baer was elected to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 2003, he met my husband, Stephen Ross Green, Esq. Ross greeted him with the traditional title lawyers use in professional gatherings: "Justice." Max would have none of that and collegially said, "With you, I'm not Justice Baer. Just call me Max." From that day on whenever Ross and I were with him, he was careful to "call" him "Max."

The Phillie Phanatic Hits Free Agency: An Analysis Of Phillies V. Harrison And The Application Of Copyright Law To Mascots As Characters, Olivia C. Giles
Duquesne Law Review
Wacky, chaotic, lovable. These are just a few words used to describe mascots of all types, especially the Phillie Phanatic. The Phanatic is arguably one of the most well-known and recognizable mascots in sports. Its taunting of opposing teams and goofy yet aggressive personality have shifted the mascot landscape; as the way mascots are perceived continues to change, so does the number of teams hoping to use them.1 The Phanatic's antics at games have led to trouble more than a few times, gaining it the title of the mostsued mascot in sports.2 Nonetheless, the Phanatic is a cherished …
Punitive Damages As A Deterrent To Distracted Driving: Where The Statutory Penalties Fall Short, The Supreme Court Of Pennsylvania Must Fill The Gap, Abagail Hudock
Duquesne Law Review
Punitive damages have always been one of the more controversial remedies available for tort harms.1 While a minority of states prohibit punitive damages altogether,2 the majority of jurisdictions embrace them not only as a means of punishment on those tortfeasors who commit especially heinous, callous, or irresponsible acts, but also as a deterrent to others from committing such conduct.3 They function, therefore, as a societal protection against behavior that poses a great risk to the public that criminal penalties and compensatory damage awards might not be able to prevent or attenuate on their own.

The Ersatz Of The Plain-Meaning Rule Of Statutory Construction In Sackett V. Epa (Ii), Dana Neacsu
Duquesne Law Review
This essay uses the United States Supreme Court second decision in Sackett v. EPA,1 or Sackett (II), to stress the obvious: judges are tasked with decoding the nation's laws for everyone's understanding. Or, in the words of John Marshall: "It is emphatically the province and duty of the judicial department to say what the law is."2 Later that century, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. further clarified that judicial duty: "Thereupon we ask, not what this man meant, but what those words would mean in the mouth of a normal speaker of English, using them in circumstances …

Not Everything Has To Be A Taking: Tyler V. Hennepin County, Maryann Herman
Duquesne Law Review
In Tyler v. Hennepin County, we see the United States Supreme Court's continuation of the strengthening of individual property rights. The Court endeavored to address two issues in this case: 1) whether the seizing and selling of property to satisfy a tax debt without returning the surplus violates the Takings Clause; and 2) whether the forfeiture of the surplus resulting from a tax sale is an excessive fine under the Eighth Amendment. The Court answered the first question in the affirmative and, thus, did not address the second question.

Rural First-Time Mothers And Their Emotional Engagement With Newborns: Occupational Therapy, Hannah Ibach, Elise Ramberg, Ashley Schindele
Critically Appraised Topics
This paper focuses on resources affecting occupational therapy (OT) mental health services that are provided to first-time moms within a rural-dwelling population in the U.S. The main factors to consider in this scenario are the population of first-time moms in rural areas, mental health services provided in rural areas, and best OT practices for mental health services. Quality of life is an important factor when considering maternal mental health. Quality of life is defined as a person’s life satisfaction, hope, sense of self, health, function, and socioeconomic status (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2020). The main focus for this critically appraised …

Workplace Implications For Female Leaders: Exploration Of Stereotype Threat Within Video Conferencing., Roisin Donnelly, Anthony Ryan
Journal Articles
A significant body of research has documented the effect to which stereotype threat can be triggered by both the physical environment and by the use of various technology media. However, there is a dearth of research exploring the relationship between stereotype threat, defined here as “the concrete, real-time threat of being judged and treated poorly in settings where a negative stereotype about one’s group applies” (Steele, Spencer & Aronson, 2002, p.385), and video conferencing software features - specifically virtual backgrounds. This literature review suggested that this feature might, in certain circumstances, negatively affect the performance of groups not stereotypically associated …

Acculturative Stress, Depression, & Anxiety Among Arab Americans, Sally Kafelghazal M.S.
Acculturative Stress, Depression, & Anxiety Among Arab Americans, Sally Kafelghazal M.S.
Theses and Dissertations
Arab Americans, those who themselves or their ancestors have immigrated fromthe Middle East or North Africa to the United States, experience a lot of stress as a result of balancing varying cultures, known as acculturative stress. Due to the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of Arabs in Americans, as well as the taboo that exists in the Arab culture regarding poor mental health and seeking mental health services, the mental health impacts of acculturation stress among this population are scarcely studied. This dissertation aims to further understand ways in which acculturative stress impacts early generational Arab American adults, including immigrants and refugees, …

Undergraduate Review
What are the contributing factors that lead Black youth into the juvenile justice system? This inquiry aims to delve into the experiences of Black males categorized as juvenile delinquents. With arrest and conviction rates significantly higher among Black youth compared to their White counterparts, it is crucial to assess whether their experiences are comparable and to identify the underlying reasons for these racial disparities. The researcher is tasked with uncovering evidence-based practices to address and rectify these racial inequities within the juvenile justice system in the United States. This paper concentrates on adolescents aged 13 to 19, specifically Black youth, …
