Generous Curiosity: Connections, Community And Commensality In Research, Mairtin Macconiomaire, Brian J. Murphy Jun 2024

Generous Curiosity: Connections, Community And Commensality In Research, Mairtin Macconiomaire, Brian J. Murphy

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter will discuss two research communities, one focussed on Franco-Irish Studies and the other focusing on Food Studies. They negotiate conferences, peer-reviewed journals and monographs without it becoming a ‘blood sport’.The theme of this chapter is born out of a lifetime’s engagement with generous curiosity, which stems from a number of serendipitous life moments and meetings. It focuses on the important role that unique research communities can play in both our professional and personal lives. It builds on sociologist Ray Oldenburg’s concept of third places.

Creating A Capital-Efficient Organization: Accele Biopharma, Jesse Lee Brown, Tyechia Paul

College of Business and Economics

Research methodology

Case information was mainly acquired through interviews with Richard Gammans, chief operating officer. Dr Gammans was a visiting professor at Fayetteville State University for a year, and two of the case authors developed personal friendships with Richard. Interviews were conducted over a two-year period as the accelerator got started. In addition, one author conducted a team-building session with the management team and one of the bio-startup researchers. An interview was also conducted with Clayton Duncan, chief executive officer, to gain his agreement with developing the case.

The Accele website included a write-up on each of the pharmaceutical startup …

Reading Preparation In Initial Teacher Preparation Programs In Missouri, Katherine O'Daniels, Shea Kerkhoff Jun 2024

Reading Preparation In Initial Teacher Preparation Programs In Missouri, Katherine O'Daniels, Shea Kerkhoff

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

This document reports on a research study about educator preparation programs in Missouri. In the spring of 2024, we developed and administered a survey to explore the curricular topics and instructional practices in initial teacher certification programs related to reading. The survey items were created by Drs. Katherine O’Daniels and Shea Kerkhoff to reflect the reading competencies outlined in the Missouri Standards for the Preparation of Educators (MoSPE) and the International Literacy (ILA) Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals (see appendix A). We followed survey methodology best practices (Dillman, 2011; Groves et al., 2009) and used three strategies for …

Public Support For Gunshot Detection Technology, Kris Henning, Joshua Carmony, Christian Peterson Jun 2024

Public Support For Gunshot Detection Technology, Kris Henning, Joshua Carmony, Christian Peterson

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Firearm violence has led many U.S. cities to invest in gunshot detection technology (GDT). Research on GDT remains limited and focuses mainly on whether it impacts police response times, arrests, and injuries. Public opinion about this technology has received limited attention. The current study addresses this gap using surveys in 23 Portland, Oregon neighborhoods with above-average firearm discharges. Respondents were evenly distributed between those opposing GDT and those supporting its use. People with prior knowledge of the technology and those with privacy concerns were more likely to be opposed whereas those who worried about gun violence and those who had …

Investigation Of Collision Cross Sections & Time-Resolved Structural Modification Of Biomolecules, Host-Guest Systems, & Small Molecules Using Ion Mobility & Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Noah Mismash Jun 2024

Investigation Of Collision Cross Sections & Time-Resolved Structural Modification Of Biomolecules, Host-Guest Systems, & Small Molecules Using Ion Mobility & Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Noah Mismash

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the structures and structural changes of supramolecular host-guest systems, proteins, and other small molecules in the gas phase, utilizing a combination of computational modeling and experimental data. The primary instruments employed were a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FTICR-MS) and an ion mobility mass spectrometer (IM-MS). In the IM-MS experiments, the focus was on investigating the binding behavior of cyclodextrin macrocycles—specifically α, β, and γ-cyclodextrin—with per-fluoroalkane substances (PFAS), which are pervasive environmental contaminants. This investigation involved measuring ion-neutral collision cross sections and using computational modeling to determine whether PFAS compounds bind inside or outside the …

Differences In Farmers’ Market Patronage Among Participants In The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, And Children (Wic), Renata Blumberg, Emily Fowler, Gabrielle Guerrero, Yeon Bai, Meena Mahadevan, Pankaj Lal Jun 2024

Differences In Farmers’ Market Patronage Among Participants In The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, And Children (Wic), Renata Blumberg, Emily Fowler, Gabrielle Guerrero, Yeon Bai, Meena Mahadevan, Pankaj Lal

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

In the United States, there is a high prevalence of diet-related diseases in low-income communities that lack access to fresh produce. Greater access to local farmers’ markets may affect individual and household intake of fruits and vegetables. However, barriers to farmers’ market access remain. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences between participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) who regularly shop at farmers’ markets and those who do not. We found that regular farmers’ market shoppers tended to consume on average more fruits and vegetables than WIC participants who did …

A Study Of Professional Learning Community Leadership Using A Modified Approach, Makayla Willis Needs Jun 2024

A Study Of Professional Learning Community Leadership Using A Modified Approach, Makayla Willis Needs

Theses and Dissertations

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are an important vehicle for teacher reflection and collaboration. The team leader of the PLC plays a critical role in the effectiveness of a PLC in improving instruction and student learning. However, there is less research around how the team leader facilitates the work of the PLC to improve instruction. This paper reports on a self-study investigation conducted by the team leader who used a modified approach to the PLC process focused on student mathematical thinking. The self-study consisted of analyzing video conversations of three PLC meetings to understand the nature of the leadership and how …

Bi-Harmonic Maps' Existence And P-Balanced Energy And Connections To Harmonic Maps, Lina Wu Jun 2024

Bi-Harmonic Maps' Existence And P-Balanced Energy And Connections To Harmonic Maps, Lina Wu

Publications and Research

We discover a bi-harmonic map’ existence, its energy growth, and its connections to a harmonic map. First, we prove the existence of a nontrivial bi-harmonic map in a unit sphere. Second, we investigate the p-balanced energy growth of biharmonic maps. As the most important energy technical breakthroughs, we propose an innovative energy algorithm called p-balanced energy technique to break the constraints of the existing L^q-energy technique in detecting L^q-energy growth towards boundlessness. The disadvantage of the finite L^q -energy technique in the L ^q spaces is not effective in dealing with infinite L^q- energy in Non-L^q spaces. Third, we study …

Shifting Forms: Queer Placemaking Amidst Neoliberalism In New York City Through Art, Colin J. Donnelly Jun 2024

Shifting Forms: Queer Placemaking Amidst Neoliberalism In New York City Through Art, Colin J. Donnelly

Geography Undergraduate Senior Theses

This project explicates how queer people produce space for themselves through art in New York City amidst the prevalent neoliberal frameworks that have existed since the 1980s. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with queer artists and nonprofit workers, participant observation in art spaces, and close reading of art compiled through archival work, I explore sites of presentation (places in which art is displayed) and modes of presentation (how specific artists decide to present their art). I analyze museums and nonprofit spaces, and engage with queer artists that create what I consider to be site-specific art. I zoom in on spatial art …

Satellite-Derived Sandy Shoreline Trends And Interannual Variability Along The Atlantic Coast Of Europe, Bruno Castelle, Etiënne Kras, Gerd Masselink, Tim Scott, Aikaterini Konstantinou, Arjen Luijendijk Jun 2024

Satellite-Derived Sandy Shoreline Trends And Interannual Variability Along The Atlantic Coast Of Europe, Bruno Castelle, Etiënne Kras, Gerd Masselink, Tim Scott, Aikaterini Konstantinou, Arjen Luijendijk

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Monitoring sandy shoreline evolution from years to decades is critical to understand the past and predict the future of our coasts. Optical satellite imagery can now infer such datasets globally, but sometimes with large uncertainties, poor spatial resolution, and thus debatable outcomes. Here we validate and analyse satellite-derived-shoreline positions (1984–2021) along the Atlantic coast of Europe using a moving-averaged approach based on coastline characteristics, indicating conservative uncertainties of long-term trends around 0.4 m/year and a potential bias towards accretion. We show that west-facing open coasts are more prone to long-term erosion, whereas relatively closed coasts favor accretion, although most of …
