Barriers Experienced By First Nations Deaf People In The Justice System, Brent Elder, Karen Soldatic, Michael A. Schwartz, Jody Barney, Damien Howard, Patrick Mcgee

College of Education Departmental Research

Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that members of the First Nations Deaf community experience more barriers when engaging with the criminal justice system than those who are not deaf. Therefore, our purpose for writing this article is to highlight legal and policy issues related to First Nations Deaf people, including perspectives of professionals working with these communities, living in Australia who have difficulty in accessing supports within the criminal justice system. In this article, we present data from semi-structured qualitative interviews focused on four key themes: (a) indefinite detention and unfit to plead, (b) a need for an intersectional approach to …

English Birth Girdles: Devotions For Women In “Travell Of Childe”, Mary Morse Jun 2024

English Birth Girdles: Devotions For Women In “Travell Of Childe”, Mary Morse

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

In medieval England, women in labor wrapped birth girdles around their abdomens to protect themselves and their unborn children. These parchment or paper rolls replicated the “girdle relics” of the Virgin Mary and other saints loaned to queens and noblewomen, extending childbirth protection to women of all classes. This book examines the texts and images of nine English birth girdles produced between the reigns of Richard II and Henry VIII. Cultural artifacts of lay devotion within the birthing chamber, the birth girdles offered the solace and promise of faith to the parturient woman and her attendants amid religious dissent, political …

A Right To Republish: Redesigning Copyright Law For Research Works, Faith O. Majekolagbe Jun 2024

A Right To Republish: Redesigning Copyright Law For Research Works, Faith O. Majekolagbe

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

Research works occupy a unique place in the knowledge economy. They are foundational to human development, and they expand our existing knowledge base and catalyze entirely new fields of study. Creators of research works have a significant interest in the public accessibility of their works at the earliest opportunity with no expectation of financial returns from sales and distribution. As such, they constitute a different category of works and facilitate distinct considerations than other creative goods governed by copyright. Copyright law is organized around the provision of economic incentives to facilitate the continued production and distribution of authorial works for …

Caregiver And Clinician Impressions On The Development Of Spoken Language In Autistic Cochlear Implant Users, Courtney Dawn Marks Jun 2024

Caregiver And Clinician Impressions On The Development Of Spoken Language In Autistic Cochlear Implant Users, Courtney Dawn Marks

Theses and Dissertations

The current literature reports that oral language development is not a realistic goal for autistic cochlear implant users (ACI). This is curious, due to the general success of cochlear implants and the fact that many autistic individuals develop strong spoken language skills. Therefore, this study aimed to examine clinician and caregiver insights into spoken language development in the ACI population with the aim of elucidating the factors that influence the poor outcomes reported in the literature. We predicted that cochlear implant function would not be the limiting factor in ACI language development, but that device use and sensory atypicalities might …

Epck Transfer Between Math And Science, Elise Marie Joyner Jun 2024

Epck Transfer Between Math And Science, Elise Marie Joyner

Theses and Dissertations

Generalist elementary school teachers have little time to develop enacted pedagogical content knowledge (ePCK) in all content areas. Therefore, the transfer of ePCK from one content area to another, such as between math and science, can help generalist teachers build their knowledge needed for teaching regardless of their content area strengths. This self-study examines the ePCK components and their elements present in both math and science instruction. I am a fifth-grade teacher in Utah County who has been teaching for 4 years. Math is taught daily, and science is taught approximately three times a week. The self-study includes six video …

Dungeons & Dragons & Dissertations: A Study Of Therapeutically Applied Tabletop Roleplaying Game Groups At A University Counseling Center, Samuel Mischa Chun

Theses and Dissertations

Although there is a large body of research on the effects of unstructured group therapy among college students, there is inconclusive research on how implementing tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) as a structured activity affects group cohesion for therapy groups made up of college students. Participants were adult, full-time university students who are seeking therapy at the university counseling center. This study measured the effectiveness of therapeutically applied TTRPGs in group therapy with a mixed-methods approach. Participants took the Outcome Questionnaire-45 (OQ-45) to measure psychological functioning, the Group Questionnaire (GQ) to measure group cohesion, and answered five qualitative questions to describe …

Kratom Safety And Toxicology In The Public Health Context: Research Needs To Better Inform Regulation, Jack E. Henningfield, Oliver Grundmann, Marilyn A. Huestis, Kirsten E. Smith

Institute of Emerging Health Professions Faculty Papers

Although kratom use has been part of life for centuries in Southeast Asia, the availability and use of kratom in the United States (US) increased substantially since the early 2000s when there was little information on kratom pharmacology, use patterns, and effects, all critical to guiding regulation and policy. Here we provide a synthesis of research with several hundred English-language papers published in the past 5 years drawing from basic research, epidemiological and surveillance data, and recent clinical research. This review of available literature aims to provide an integrated update regarding our current understanding of kratom's benefits, risks, pharmacology, and …

Automated Decision-Making And Review Of Administrative Decisions, Margaret Allars Jun 2024

Automated Decision-Making And Review Of Administrative Decisions, Margaret Allars

Georgia Law Review

The use of automated decision-making (ADM) carries an enhanced risk of failure to meet administrative law standards. This Article identifies Australian federal statutory schemes for ADM and instances of non-statutory use of ADM, with a view to evaluating the scope for the risk to be realized. Express provisions for correction of error, internal review avenues, and external review by tribunals and courts may not deliver satisfactory solutions. Despite a promising start, review and reform of the regulation of ADM use has lagged. However, in 2023, the Report of the Royal Commission into Robodebt gave the issue renewed impetus, recommending statutory …

Leo Strauss On Machiavelli: Athens Vs. Jerusalem Or Ontological Assumptions About Human Nature And Power, Dickson Tiphaine, Jokić Aleksandar

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article we focus on the true nature of a disparity asserted in Leo Strauss's discussion of Machiavelli to amount to a virtue battle of sorts between Athens and Jerusalem. To convey this conflict Strauss is drawing both on his once Talmudic scholarship and his expertise in the history of political philosophy. We explore the stunning distortions, both theological and philosophical, in Strauss's discussion that appears aimed to support a conservative position on leadership, which calls for the magnanimous few to exercise power over the many (the lowborn, the poor and the vulgar). Not only does Strauss distort the …

Shephard, Carol Mohler, Tao Wei, Tzu-Chi Kuoc, Zhan Chen

Faculty Publications

Silicones have excellent material properties and are used extensively in many applications, ranging from adhesives and lubricants to electrical insulation. To ensure strong adhesion of silicone adhesives to a wide variety of substrates, silane-based adhesion promotors are typically blended into the silicone adhesive formulation. However, little is known at the molecular level about the true silane adhesion promotion mechanism, which limits the ability to develop even more effective adhesion promoters. To understand the adhesion promotion mechanism of silane molecules at the molecular level, this study has used sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG) to determine the behavior of (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxy silane …

She’S Got Her Ticket: The Lived Experience Of Reimagined Identity Among University-Educated Caribbean Black Gay Women, Sa-Rawla Stoute

Theses and Dissertations

The voice of Black gay women in the Anglophone Caribbean is often missing from the literature. This phenomenological study focuses on the lived experience of reimagined identity among university-educated Black gay women in the Anglophone Caribbean. This study also examines their meaning-making and agentive practices as they navigate cultural artifacts and negotiate their identity. Using van Manen’s data collection methods and analysis, this study highlights essential themes around a reimagined identity: reimagining requires permission, and reimagining one’s identity transforms frames of reference. Findings also highlight how participants use space and control their environment as resistance strategies and how they made …

Combining Novel Thrombectomy Devices For Intracardiac Mass Extraction: The Kong And Godzilla Of Mass Extraction, Hussam Al Hennawi, Ahmad Abulshamat, Ali Sheikh, Hisham Qandeel, Kiril Zakharov, Appa Bandi, Mohammed Qintar

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

Transcatheter extraction of an intracardiac mass is a newer approach that may lead to nonsurgical treatment of complex cardiac masses. We present a case in which thrombectomy devices were combined to extract a right atrial mass, which highlights new frontiers in the treatment of complex transcatheter mass extraction. The combined use of two transcatheter thrombectomy devices (Kong and Godzilla) may provide a powerful addition to the existing armamentarium.

Targeting Cancers With Ohsv-Based Oncolytic Viral Immunotherapy, Rakin Tammam Nasar, Ifeanyi Kingsley Uche, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

The recent success of cancer immunotherapies, such as immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICIs), monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), cancer vaccines, and adoptive cellular therapies (ACTs), has revolutionized traditional cancer treatment. However, these immunotherapeutic modalities have variable efficacies, and many of them exhibit adverse effects. Oncolytic viral Immunotherapy (OViT), whereby viruses are used to directly or indirectly induce anti-cancer immune responses, is emerging as a novel immunotherapy for treating patients with different types of cancer. The herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) possesses many characteristics that inform its use as an effective OViT agents and remains a leading candidate. Its recent clinical success resulted in …
