The presence of myths and misconceptions adds to unsanitary habits, which undermine education and reproductive health.
Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in urban Karachi. The participants were 850 unmarried school-going female adolescents aged 13 to 19. The data were collected using a pre-coded questionnaire. …

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Background: Low-and middle-income countries including Pakistan still have low breastfeeding rates and infant feeding remains a concern. Human milk banks (HMBs) play a crucial role in neonatal and infant health by providing safe, pasteurized donor human milk to infants who do not have access to their mother's own milk, particularly preterm and low-birth-weight infants. The perception regarding the concept and use of HMBs has yet to be explored in several contexts, especially in the low-and middle-income countries including Pakistan.
Aim: To explore the perceptions of mothers regarding human milk banks in Pakistan, focusing on the barriers and enablers to …

Teaching English Language Learners: Exploring The Instructional Modifications Mainstream Teachers Use, Nilufer Guler

Journal of English Learner Education

The number of language learners (ELLs) is increasing rapidly at U.S. schools. Mainstream teachers have an important role in the academic success of these students because ELLs spend most of their school time in mainstream classes and are pulled out a few hours in a school day for ELL services. This research aims to uncover the educational experiences of ELLs in mainstream classes. Using statewide systematic initiative and qualities of linguistically responsive teachers as theoretical frameworks, I collected survey data from 129 teachers and interviewed 15 teachers. The results have shown that teachers tend to translate language for their students …

A qualitative analysis indicated four themes related to instruction techniques and emotional development from these field experiences: (1) the modified strategies can facilitate students’ comprehension, (2) the domains of languages, (3) increased confidence and empathy, …

Cooperating Teachers’ Views And Practices About Teaching Emergent Bilinguals In General Education Classrooms, Tunde Szecsi, Janka Szilagyi Jun 2024

Cooperating Teachers’ Views And Practices About Teaching Emergent Bilinguals In General Education Classrooms, Tunde Szecsi, Janka Szilagyi

Journal of English Learner Education

Cooperating teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and practices influence teacher candidates’ views and practices. Therefore, this study examined mainstream cooperating teachers’ perceptions about critical components of effective instruction for English learners, and the relationship between these teachers’ perceptions and classroom practices. We interviewed 55 teachers and completed a 90-minute observation in each classroom. We analyzed the interviews for common themes, and we used descriptive statistics to summarize the observation data. The findings indicated that teachers were well-versed in evidence-based instructional activities and strategies. However, many teachers found it challenging to infuse ELs’ language, culture and experiential background into their instruction.

Journal of English Learner Education

This study explores the integration of a language-based approach to content instruction’s (LACI) six Cs of support into an existing civics lesson plan to improve content and language learning for multilingual learners. We used the Civics for All curriculum from the New York City Department of Education to identify lesson plans that could be enhanced for teaching multilingual learners. African Union’S Youth Education Challenge: A Critical Review Of Agenda 2063, Ruth V. Akumbu, Jennifer Jukanovich

The Scholarship Without Borders Journal

It is no easy feat for the African Union to mobilize 55 countries of various political, tribal, and economic demographics, yet the problem remains that nearly 34 million children are out of school, and the continent is not graduating the secondary students needed for the 1.25-billion-member workforce expected by 2050 (ISS Africa, 2017). The paper aims to assess African Union strategies and make recommendations for member countries to utilize to solve educational challenges facing the continent’s growing population and market. We assess the educational challenge and contributing factors followed by suggesting four strategic directions, grounded in Agenda 2063, that the …

Mother Tongue's Impact On English Language Teaching And Learning, Dr Motasem Mohmoud Abu Salim Jun 2024

Mother Tongue's Impact On English Language Teaching And Learning, Dr Motasem Mohmoud Abu Salim

Al-miʿyār

Abstract:

Language serves as a medium for conveying ideas, facts, emotions, and desires through arbitrary symbols. It fosters connections between sentiments, ideas, and attitudes, enabling communication among people. While various languages are spoken worldwide, English is widely chosen for communication alongside native tongues. In the era of globalization, the significance of English language instruction cannot be overstated, given its status as a universal language. However, debates persist regarding the role of the mother tongue in English language teaching and learning. Discrepancies in spelling, symbols, and sound systems between native languages and English often pose pronunciation challenges. To address this, integrating …

Maria Timbang Palo: Pabirik Na Kuwento Ng Camarines Norte, Paz Verdades M. Santos

Challenging The Goal Of Shareholder Value Maximization In Sustainable Business Education, Todd L. Sayre Jun 2024

Challenging The Goal Of Shareholder Value Maximization In Sustainable Business Education, Todd L. Sayre

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

The purpose of this paper is to explain to business instructors how to reconcile the assumption that managers must maximize shareholder value (MSV) with the prospect of corporations helping to achieve global environmental sustainability. The paper explains that managers choose to MSV at a cost to the environment not due to legal obligations but because of their equity pay incentives. The paper, then, provides a sequence of simplified explanations for instructors to use in conveying this information to their students. The potential to change executive pay enables students to consider the possibility of corporations helping to achieve global sustainability.

Data Privacy Issues In West Virginia And Beyond: An Overview, Jena Martin Jun 2024

Data Privacy Issues In West Virginia And Beyond: An Overview, Jena Martin

Law Faculty Scholarship

Work on the first edition of this white paper originally began in February 2019. The final results were published in February 2021 and was originally entitled Data Privacy Issues in West Virginia and Beyond: A Comprehensive Overview. In the almost three and a half years since that work was commissioned, the landscape of data privacy and its attendant technologies has grown so significantly that I no longer feel comfortable in calling any paper that discusses these issues comprehensive. Indeed, when engaging with experts, insiders, and consumers, the one common theme that seems to now permeate this work is its vastness …
