Application Of Methods To Population-Based Surveys To Reduce Bias In Estimates Of Sars-Cov-2 Infection Burden In The Population, Saba Qasmieh Jun 2024

Application Of Methods To Population-Based Surveys To Reduce Bias In Estimates Of Sars-Cov-2 Infection Burden In The Population, Saba Qasmieh

Dissertations and Theses

BACKGROUND: Population-based surveys designed to randomly sample the population can be a critical and complementary tool to traditional surveillance approaches. Probability-based surveys enable the measurement of SARS-CoV-2 testing and outcomes that avoid issues around self-selection into testing, making them an effective approach to address ascertainment bias in passive surveillance. For surveys to be a useful and reliable surveillance tool for understanding the burden and distribution of SARS-CoV-2 infection, they need to capture prevalence estimates that are both valid and reliable to be optimally informative for public health measures. The dissertation was undertaken to address three main gaps that have implications …

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The root nodules of actinorhizal plants are home to nitrogen-fixing bacterial symbionts, known as Frankia, along with a small percentage of other microorganisms. These include fungal endophytes and non-Frankia bacteria. The taxonomic and functional diversity of the microbial consortia within these root nodules is not well understood. In this study, we surveyed and analyzed the cultivable, non-Frankia fungal and bacterial endophytes of root nodules from red and Sitka alder trees that grow together. We examined their taxonomic diversity, co-occurrence, differences between hosts, and potential functional roles. For the first time, we are reporting numerous fungal endophytes of alder root nodules. …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Research to date has detailed numerous challenges in emergency department (ED) communication with persons living with dementia (PLWD) and their caregivers. However, little is known about communication experiences of individuals belonging to minoritized racial and ethnic groups, who are disproportionately impacted by dementia and less likely to be included in dementia research.

Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 29 caregivers of PLWD from two urban academic hospital EDs with distinct patient populations. The first site is an ED in the Northeast serving a majority White, English-speaking, and insured population. The second site is an ED in the South serving …

Extension Research

Natural gas extraction is a critical driver of the economy in western North America. Ecological reclamation is important to ensure surface disturbance impacts associated with natural gas development are not permanent and to assist native biota. Previous studies in semi-arid natural gas fields within Sublette County, Wyoming, USA have shown insects respond favorably to 1–3-year-old well pads undergoing reclamation compared to older successional reference vegetation communities dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata spp. Wyomingensis). Here, we examined well pads which were initially seed 5, 8, 10, 11, and 12 years prior to our study. We used a free, image-based …

Wildlife demography is influenced by behavioural decisions, with sleep being a crucial avian behaviour. Avian species use roost sites to minimize thermoregulation costs, predation risk and enhance foraging efficiency. Sleep locations are often reused, forming networks within the home range. Our study, focusing on female eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) during the reproductive season, used social network analysis to quantify both roost site selection and network structure. We identified roost networks which were composed of a small percentage of hub roost sites connecting satellite roosts. Hub roosts were characterized by greater values of betweenness (β = 0.62, s.e. = …

The Stability Of Epigenetic Variants That Can Act As Loci Causing Phenotypic Change, Raul Faburrieta May 2024

The Stability Of Epigenetic Variants That Can Act As Loci Causing Phenotypic Change, Raul Faburrieta

Biology Theses

Epigenetic variations are a possible source of heritable phenotypic variation. In this study I focus on phenotypic alterations seen in epigenetic Recombinant Inbred Lines (epiRILs) of Arabidopsis thaliana. These epiRILs allow me to study the effects differentially methylated regions (DMRs) have on phenotypic variance. In a study performed in 2014 by Cortijo et al., they found that DMR’s affect flowering time and root length when grown under greenhouse conditions. In this study, I replicated the Cortijo et al. (2014) study, with some changes, to see whether the same significant eQTL regions are found. I found that, some of the eQTLs …

Comparing Long‑Term Patterns Of Spread Of Native And Invasive Plants In A Successional Forest, Matthew H. Yamamoto, Chad C. Jones May 2024

Comparing Long‑Term Patterns Of Spread Of Native And Invasive Plants In A Successional Forest, Matthew H. Yamamoto, Chad C. Jones

Botany Faculty Publications

A fundamental question in invasive plant ecology is whether invasive and native plants have different ecological roles. Differences in functional traits have been explored, but we lack a comparison of the factors affecting the spread of co-occurring natives and invasives. Some have proposed that to succeed, invasives would colonize a wider variety of sites, would disperse farther, or would be better at colonizing sites with more available light and soil nutrients than natives. We examined patterns of spread over 70 years in a regenerating forest in Connecticut, USA, where both native and invasive species acted as colonizers. We compared seven …

Climate Influences Emerge Within Two Decades Of Observations For Pelagic Tunicates And Pelagic Snails In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Emily Stidham May 2024

Climate Influences Emerge Within Two Decades Of Observations For Pelagic Tunicates And Pelagic Snails In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Emily Stidham

Oceanography

Mucus-net feeders are under-appreciated organisms that can have large impacts on how organic matter moves through food webs. In the Northern Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound they are represented primarily by pelagic tunicates (larvaceans, doliolids, salps) and pelagic snails (pteropods). Over a 20-year time-series (2001-2021) there was strong seasonality of larvacean abundance and species composition. Spring was dominated by Oikopleura labradoriensis and Fritillaria borealis, with higher diversity during autumn, due largely to the periodic presence of warm-water species. There was a distinct cross-shelf gradient with Oikopleura dioica, spreading across the lower salinity shelf during the autumn, and Fritillaria …

Investigating The Effects Of Male Size And Pronotal Glowspots On Female Courtship Behaviour Of The Glowspot Cockroach (Lucihormetica Verrucosa), Ella X. Whitaker, Jane Akerman, Alexander D.M. Wilson May 2024

Investigating The Effects Of Male Size And Pronotal Glowspots On Female Courtship Behaviour Of The Glowspot Cockroach (Lucihormetica Verrucosa), Ella X. Whitaker, Jane Akerman, Alexander D.M. Wilson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Lucihormetica verrucosa (Blattodea, Blaberidae) are highly sexually dimorphic cockroaches, with the males having two symmetrically organised ‘glowspots’ on their pronotum. The spots can range in colour from whitish-yellow to red, depending on the quantity of carotenoids in their diet. These spots auto-fluoresce when exposed to UV wavelengths, with the amount of fluorescence inversely related to the carotenoid content. The diet-dependent aspect of the pronotal spots insinuates that they are a fitness-dependent trait and thus inform sexual selection, but existing studies have not directly investigated the role of the pronotal spots in courtship behaviour. Invertebrate sexual selection is commonly informed by …

Assessing The Impact Of An Offshore Longline Mussel Farm On Local Water Circulation In A Highly Hydrodynamic Energetic Bay, Llucia Mascorda-Cabre, Emma V. Sheehan, Martin J. Attrill, Phil Hosegood May 2024

Assessing The Impact Of An Offshore Longline Mussel Farm On Local Water Circulation In A Highly Hydrodynamic Energetic Bay, Llucia Mascorda-Cabre, Emma V. Sheehan, Martin J. Attrill, Phil Hosegood

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Thought to be a sustainable choice, molluscs are the most consumed aquaculture foods after finfish. The expansion of the mussel aquaculture industry offshore reports lower environmental impacts compared to inshore farms. Although an offshore location has the potential to reduce a farm's ecological impacts, the effect of large developments on water currents is still not fully understood. High hydrodynamic regimes can influence the dispersion of farm biodeposits, organic loading, flow alterations with the potential to impact water residence time, particle and sediment dispersal (including larvae and biodeposits) and seabed sediment resuspension, which in turn, can have ecological impacts. Farm-induced flow …

Eco-Assessment Of Phytoplankton Composition In Relation To Environmental Conditions Of Saltwater And Freshwater Lakes In The Konya Closed Basin (Türkiye), Abuzer Çelekli, Ömer Lekesiz, Tolga Çetin

Turkish Journal of Botany

Great importance is given to maintaining lentic ecosystems, threatened by human-induced consequences worldwide. The present study hypothesized to assess differences in species-environment relationships and ecological status of 15 lakes (saline water systems, high-altitude freshwater lakes, and other freshwater lakes) in the Konya Closed River Basin using phytoplankton indices throughout wet and dry periods. Results of canonical correspondence analysis separated saline and freshwater (high-altitude) habitats, which were characterized by different phytoplankton species. Total phosphorus (TP), electrical conductivity (EC), nickel-Ni, and altitude were the most influential environmental factors affecting phytoplankton dispersal in these ecosystems. Saline lakes were under pressure of high EC, …

Warming water temperatures as a result of climate change pose a major threat to coldwater organisms. However, the rate of warming is not spatially uniform due to surface-ground-water interactions and stream and watershed characteristics. Coldwater habitats that are most resistant to warming serve as thermal refugia and identifying their locations is critical to regional aquatic conservation planning. We quantified the thermal sensitivity of 203 streams providing current and potential habitat for brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) across nearly 1000 linear km of their native range in the southern and central Appalachian Mountains region, USA, and characterized their spatial variability …

Anthropogenic Impacts Lead To Plant Biodiversity Losses In A Unique And Fragile Coastal Dune Ecosystem, Natalie Clagett May 2024

Anthropogenic Impacts Lead To Plant Biodiversity Losses In A Unique And Fragile Coastal Dune Ecosystem, Natalie Clagett

Theses

At the southern end of the California Floristic Province lie the El Socorro Dunes. These Dunes have the highest biodiversity of any dune system in Mexico, hosting at least 11 perennial endemic and rare plant species. The El Socorro Dunes’ perennial vegetation was surveyed between 2008 to 2010, but since then these dunes have faced pressure from regional land transformations, such as off-roading and mining, invasive species spread, and climate change. This study examines the plant community changes within the El Socorro Dunes and potential links to stressors. Our results show significant losses of native plants, and significant increases in …

Diet Quality, Food Insecurity, And Periodontal Disease In Hispanic Men In The United States, Bennett R. Pope May 2024

Diet Quality, Food Insecurity, And Periodontal Disease In Hispanic Men In The United States, Bennett R. Pope

Theses and Dissertations

Food insecurity, poor diet quality, and periodontal disease are critical problems in the United States, yet limited studies examine how these three conditions are related. Men and the Hispanic population suffer a disproportionate burden of periodontal disease and are understudied groups. Using NHANES data from 2015 to 2018 and the HEI-2015, this study describes the prevalence of men’s periodontitis and its association with food insecurity and diet quality. The final sample was 4,582 men, aged 30 years or older, of whom 1,130 were Hispanic. Odds ratios were calculated via multivariable logistic regression models. Very low food security significantly increased the …
