Visual Culture Explorations: Un/Becoming Art Educators, Wanda B. Knight, Karen Keifer-Boyd, Patricia M. Amburgy

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

What we consider to be obvious, true, or commonsense depends on the various assumptions we hold. Becoming aware of our assumptions is difficult at best. Despite our belief that we know what our assumptions are, we are hindered by the fact that we are using our own interpretive filters to become knowledgeable of our own filters. Described as a "cognitive catch-22,” it is the equivalent of our trying to see the back of our head while looking directly into a mirror (Brookfield & Preskill, 1999). Becoming critical requires that we find a mirror that critically reflects our thinking and reveals …

Peer Tutoring And Technology Integration : You Too Can Make It Happen!, Brandy Smith

Graduate Research Papers

Technology is motivating to students and brings with it a sense of empowerment. This article looks at a successful model of technology integration. This model comes in the form of an after-school club called the "Tech Club" built upon a peer tutoring model. A lead teacher trained third grade student leaders, or the "Tech Kids" to facilitate technology "how-to" sessions in their classrooms. After learning technology basics, this core group of Tech Kids visited different third grade classrooms to teach their peers this magic. This article explains how this peer tutoring model greatly empowered these third grade students and allowed …

Image Is Everything: An Analysis Of One Urban Middle School’S Culture And The Development Of A Plan For Change, Thelma B. Jackson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to examine the process used by 1 urban middle school to understand and to improve the school’s image, internally and externally through the collaborative efforts of administrators, school leaders, and beginning teachers. Parent surveys, teacher surveys, and a variety of negative media coverage validated a concern regarding the school’s culture, ability to sustain change, the public’s lack of satisfaction, and the propensity to attract undesired media coverage. The major concern was the school’s inability to maintain a professional learning community that focused on student achievement, staff collaboration, and marketing successes, rather than failures.

The research …

Detection And Evaluation Of Exisiting Pavement System With Brick Base, Karishma Desai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At the turn of the century, the City of Orlando initiated the "Neighborhood Horizon Program." This program involved local citizens to help improve their community resources by engaging in a process of planning where the problems associated with the communities were identified. Many residents favored to bring back the brick roads that were overlaid with asphalt concrete to provided better transportation in the mid 1900s. With majority of the neighborhood streets already bricked, removing asphalt ensured safety, served as a technique for slowing traffic, and added to the historical integrity. Since there were no official documentations available that stated the …
