Creating A Culture Of Literacy: Strengthening The Core Of Secondary Reading Instruction, Karen C. Waters, Charles Britton

Education Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to articulate a plan to provide high quality literacy instruction in secondary content area classes that will yield the highest impact on student learning while addressing the needs of the lowest-performing students whose literacy needs cannot be ignored. This will necessitate a restructuring of the three-tiered format within which a systems approach for school improvement embeds a well-defined professional learning plan, and strong collaboration among content area teachers, reading professionals, and special educators to collaborate on the delivery of differentiated, cross-curricular instructional supports.

Development Of An Early Expository Text Comprehension Assessment: A Pilot Study, Stacey Christianson Jul 2017

Development Of An Early Expository Text Comprehension Assessment: A Pilot Study, Stacey Christianson

Theses and Dissertations

Literature supporting the use of informational texts with preschool children has increased in recent years. However, many preschool classrooms still focus on narrative text, and teachers are often unsure how to provide support for children's comprehension of informational texts. An assessment addressing preschool children's informational text comprehension will help teachers understand what children can do with informational texts and point out demands or tasks that children should be able to handle. A comprehension assessment for preschool children focusing on text purpose, text features, text retell, and comprehension of text structures has not been available. To fit this need, recent effort …

Geospatial Analysis Of Spatial Patterns Of U.S. Hospital Readmission Rates, Yamei Wang Jan 2017

Geospatial Analysis Of Spatial Patterns Of U.S. Hospital Readmission Rates, Yamei Wang

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Unplanned hospital readmission after a recent hospitalization is an indication of poor healthcare quality and a waste of healthcare resources. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) initiated the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) to improve healthcare quality and reduce costs; however, studies found the risk adjustment method used in calculating the standardized readmission rate was less accurate without hospital region or community factors. Accordingly, this cross-sectional quantitative study was designed to examine spatial patterns in hospital readmission rates following Andersen's behavioral model of health service utilization. This study was the first geospatial analysis on risk standardized hospital readmissions …

Additive + Subtractive: Reimagining The Work Of A Mid-Century Master, Jorgen D. Brandt

Architecture Theses

How do we build upon someone else’s work in a thoughtful and meaningful way while respecting the original character of their work? The challenge is even greater when the designer and architecture are known around the world for their symbolism and innovation. This thesis is an exploratory process in the adaptive reuse of Saarinen’s iconic IBM campus in Rochester, Minnesota. It seeks to develop design ideas which suit new uses while being congruous with the existing architectural language. The size and scale of this site lends itself to additive + subjective design strategies. The iconic form provides a framework to …

Mending The Gap: Taking Advantage Of Missed Opportunities Through Bridge Design, Nicholas Lunde Jan 2017

Mending The Gap: Taking Advantage Of Missed Opportunities Through Bridge Design, Nicholas Lunde

Architecture Theses

Can a bridge be more than just a passageway to get from one side of a natural feature to another? Can different typologies be integrated into bridge design to create more of a destination than just a passage? Bridges have been around throughout the history of mankind, whether it was a log crossing a mud hole or the Golden Gate Bridge spanning over a mile. What these two widespread examples have in common is that they are both solely used to travel over an obstacle. A bridge can be much more than just a way to cross a difficult path. …

Actions Speak Louder Than Words: Outsiders' Perceptions Of Diversity Mixed Messages, Leon Windscheid, Lynn Bowes-Sperry, Deborah L. Kidder, Ho Kwan Cheung, Michele Morner, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

To attract a gender diverse workforce, many employers use diversity statements to publicly signal that they value gender diversity. However, this often represents a misalignment between words and actions (i.e., a diversity mixed message) because most organizations are male dominated, especially in board positions. We conducted 3 studies to investigate the potentially indirect effect of such diversity mixed messages through perceived behavioral integrity on employer attractiveness. In Study 1, following a 2 x 2 design, participants (N = 225) were either shown a pro gender diversity statement or a neutral statement, in combination with a gender diverse board (4 men …

Exploring Web-Based Visual Interfaces For Searching Research Articles On Digital Library Systems, Maxwell Fowler, Chris Bellis, Chris Perry, Beomjin Kim

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

Previous studies that present information archived in digital libraries have used either document meta-data or document content. The current search mechanisms commonly return text-based results that were compiled from the meta-data without reflecting the underlying content. Visual analytics is a possible solution for improving searches by presenting a large amount of information, including document content alongside meta-data, in a limited screen space. This paper introduces a multi-tiered visual interface for searching research articles stored in Digital Library systems. The goals of this system are to allow users to find research papers about their interests in a large work space, to …

Math As Text, Rhetoric As Reason: Can The Humanities Save Math Education?, Elizabeth Melendez Apr 2016

Math As Text, Rhetoric As Reason: Can The Humanities Save Math Education?, Elizabeth Melendez

KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses

As a student I had always struggled hopelessly with math. I noticed many of my classmates and associates outside of school shared similar experiences with this subject. However, a unique convergence of fortuitous circumstances shed some much needed light on my difficulties with math. Using a creative and communicative approach, I was able to analyze my experience from a rhetorical perspective, which allowed me to see more clearly, not just the problem I was having with math, but the overall problems many seem to have with math education. My findings were astonishing and became the subject of my research for …

The Production Of Semantic Representations In Children With Specific Language Impairment, Autism Spectrum Disorder, And Typical Language Development, Kacy L. Kreger

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Although differences in processing are well established in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), little is known about how these differences impact the type of information they ultimately acquire when learning new words. The purpose of this study was to analyze novel word definitions from children with SLI, ASD, and typical language development (TLD) to determine if the semantic information they learned was influenced by these processing differences. Thirty-six children (12 in each group), matched on expressive vocabulary, participated in a novel word learning study across three sessions. The semantic features of 432 definitions were …

Educational Videogame Design Strategies Used To Improve Motivation In Engineering Students, Thomas Abdul Rasheed Jan 2016

Educational Videogame Design Strategies Used To Improve Motivation In Engineering Students, Thomas Abdul Rasheed

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The use of traditional textbooks in engineering education is uninspiring and unrewarding for engineering students, resulting in many such students' low motivation and lack of interest in their schoolwork. In contrast, the American culture's ubiquitous factor of computer technology devices contributes to effective communication and entertainment. Today, computer videogames are owned and played by 80% of American children between the ages of 8 and 18. Plus, research studies have proven that computer videogame technology can motivate students in learning environments. The use of videogames in education is therefore a user-centered strategy because most youth today are familiar with the technology …

New Archiving, Fingering, And Assessing Techniques For Sheet Music Using Advanced Signal Processing Approaches, Ting-Chen Hsu Jan 2016

New Archiving, Fingering, And Assessing Techniques For Sheet Music Using Advanced Signal Processing Approaches, Ting-Chen Hsu

LSU Master's Theses

In this thesis, advanced signal processing techniques are proposed to archive the musical scores, guide the novice pianists to play piano with appropriate fingerings, and assess the harmonization for musical composition. The mathematical frameworks for these three applications are established and the corresponding optimization problems are formulated. The optimal solutions are also provided. First, the hard- and soft-archiving approaches for storing and distributing musical scores are investigated. By use of the popular musical scripting language, LilyPond, as the intermediate data format, we propose to encode the LilyPond script, which is converted from the original musical score, to the two-dimensional quick-response …
