Effects Of Television On Rural Minnesota Viewer Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment, Beverly Brown Schulke Aug 1977

Effects Of Television On Rural Minnesota Viewer Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment, Beverly Brown Schulke

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the relationship between television viewing and attitudes toward capital punishment by making comparisons between viewers watching Canadian television and viewers receiving United States television. The adult population of three rural Minnesota areas was enumerated providing a sample N of 414. These areas were closely matched in all respects except type of television received. The first area receives only Canadian television signals, the second both United States and Canadian television signals, and the third receives only United States television signals. One adult from each household was interviewed in his/her home. High school youths in corresponding areas were also …

A Demographic Study Of Two Alcoholic Populations In A State Hospital, James John Schelot

Dissertations and Theses

Twenty-five alcoholic patients in the Alcohol Treatment Program at Dammasch State Hospital near Wilsonville, Oregon, and twenty-five alcoholic patients in the same hospital who were not participating in the program were given a questionnaire designed to collect demographic data on both groups. The demographic characteristics were to be gathered in order to assess the possible need of diversified treatment programs for alcoholic patients at Dammasch State Hospital and in the Portland community.

Demographic data involved the social background, the alcohol background, and the medical/psychological history of the patients.

The results seemed to suggest that the two groups of patients were …

The Demography Of The Sagebrush Defoliator,Aroga Websteri Clarke (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), And Its Impact On Artemisia Tridentata, Anne Kristin Temte

Biology

The demography of the sagebrush defoliator, Aroga websteri Clarke, and its impact on the productivity of Artemisia tridentata were studied during 1974 and 1975. Four objectives were pursued: 1) to continue demographic studies begun in 1971 to determine causes for population fluctuations, 2) to correlate temperature and precipitation records from the study site with changes in the defoliator populations and with sagebrush quality, 3) to assess the impact of defoliator infestation on the subsequent productivity of Artemisia tridentata, and 4) to assess the long-term impact of severe defoliation on the survival and regrowth of Artemisia tridentata. The defoliator population was …

"Introduction" To The Great Plains: Environment And Culture, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1977

"Introduction" To The Great Plains: Environment And Culture, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

In the pages that follow I have summarized the views of certain selected scholars whose emphases seem to illustrate changing and contrasting interpretations of the interaction of environment and culture on the Great Plains. I have grouped their writings into two inclusive categories. First come those whose conceptual schemes suggest the primacy of environmental variables. I refer to these scholars, perhaps simplistically, as environmentalists, even though this term has acquired a different meaning in recent years. In the second group are several scholars, selected more arbitrarily than the first, whose writings seem to accord more importance to cultural factors. For …

Measurements Of Operational Efficiency In The Outpatient Setting, Judy Grooms Burn Jan 1977

Measurements Of Operational Efficiency In The Outpatient Setting, Judy Grooms Burn

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The results of patient flow, work sampling, and demographic analyses of the General Medicine outpatient Clinic at the Medical University of South Carolina are presented. Data collection procedures are discussed. The association between clinic efficiency and selected demographic characteristics of the patient population is examined. Inhibitors to smooth patient flow are revealed through the examination of the distributions of service and queue times. Hourly distributions of staff time expended in various activities are presented, and the work sampling data is correlated with results from the patient flow study. The usefulness of the results as indices of clinic efficiency is considered.

Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers Jan 1977

Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers

Masters Theses

The present study was designed to determine whether physical distance between male and female interviewees and a female interviewer affected verbal productivity and anxiety level when interviewees discussed academic, social, and personal topics. The interview was conceptualized as an information-gathering interview. Crucial variables in such interviews are client participation and information flow. Client verbal productivity appears to be directly related to these variables, and was used as one dependent variable to measure the impact of distance on interviewee verbal behavior. A self-report measure of anxiety, the Fear Thermometer was used as a second dependent variable.

The experimental distances used in …

Toward An Understanding Of Men And Masculinity: Some Dimensions Of The Social Construction Of Knowledge In Social Work Professional Journals, Robert Bailey, Denny Patella Jan 1977

Toward An Understanding Of Men And Masculinity: Some Dimensions Of The Social Construction Of Knowledge In Social Work Professional Journals, Robert Bailey, Denny Patella

Dissertations and Theses

This work is an attempt to critically evaluate the way men and masculinity have been portrayed in and through social work journals and to develop an annotated bibliography of the professional periodical literature as it relates to the masculine gender role. It is also an analysis of authorship in order to determine differential participation by the sexes in social work journals. These analyses will be used to assess the current status of “masculinity” and gender role issues in the profession and to suggest areas of future growth.

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "A Demographic Analysis of the Omaha Jewish Community" by Murray Frost.

The 1970 Census asked no questions about religious identification and therefore a religious community must make its own studies to determine the characteristics of its population. A study conducted for the Omaha Jewish Federation by the Center for Applied Urban Research provided this data for the Omaha Jewish community.

This report presents data from a ten-page questionnaire mailed in Fall 1975 to all households on the "community list" maintained by the Omaha Jewish Federation. Responses were received from 1,165 of …

Live Trap Preference Among Grassland Mammals, Robert K. Rose, Norman A. Slade, James H. Honacki

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In two independent studies, small mammals of grassland communities in eastern Kansas, when given a choice, preferred Fitch to Sherman live traps. Except for the harvest mice in the demographic study, the type of preferred trap and magnitude of selection was remarkably comparable, with microtines showing slight, and cricetines strong, preferences overall. The merits of each type of trap are compared, and related to season, weather, prior experience, and trap-associated mortality.
