Recognizing Elder Abuse In Mongolia: Experiences Of Family Physicians, Ariunsanaa Bagaajav Jun 2024

Recognizing Elder Abuse In Mongolia: Experiences Of Family Physicians, Ariunsanaa Bagaajav

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Elder abuse is a globally recognized social problem with serious consequences. The most recent meta-analysis estimates the prevalence of elder abuse at 17%. Studies conducted in Asian countries suggest prevalence rates higher than the global average. Social stressors including alcoholism, unemployment, and poverty related to economic transitions, many of which apply in Mongolia, are associated with elder abuse. International studies have found that health care providers play critical roles in detecting cases of elder abuse. Due to universal access to primary care in Mongolia, family physicians are uniquely positioned to interact with potential victims of elder abuse. However, the extent …

The Cultural Complexity Of Immigrants And The Implications For Personality Assessment: Exploring The Role Of Frame Switching, Patrick Jay Lee Jun 2024

The Cultural Complexity Of Immigrants And The Implications For Personality Assessment: Exploring The Role Of Frame Switching, Patrick Jay Lee

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

A significant body of personality research has focused on cross-national comparison, but less attention has been devoted to within-country subcultural complexity – especially with regards to the growing population of bicultural immigrants who subscribe to multiple cultural-value systems. Bicultural individuals have been found to view situations under distinct frames of reference corresponding to their heritage and host cultures, and their attitudes and behavior can vary depending on which frame is activated at a given moment. This dissertation investigates whether such frame switching effects can be caused by elements within a formal personality assessment setting, and in turn affect bicultural respondents’ …

The Mystic Chords Of Memory: The Civil War Musical As Historiography, Christine Snyder Jun 2024

The Mystic Chords Of Memory: The Civil War Musical As Historiography, Christine Snyder

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The U.S. American Civil War is arguably the defining event in the nation’s history; it was the bloodiest war in that history, but also the means by which the United States ended slavery within its borders. Musical theatre, the major U.S. American contribution to popular and commercial theater, might seem a natural partner for chronicling these vital and epic events, but unlike the founding of the nation, which spawned two popular musicals, 1776 (1968) and Hamilton (2015), Civil War musicals have struggled to find audiences or become a part of the musical theatre canon. In this dissertation, I examine how …

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study employed a critical inquiry paradigm to explore the significance of equity and social justice in teaching qualitative methodologies and methods to graduate students. Graduate students of multiple minoritized identities and a faculty member conducted a two-year inquiry into the research apprenticeship experience, including the stages of student-led conceptualization, data collection, analysis, international conference presentation, and publication. The study investigated the experiences of the faculty and students as well as the responsibilities of the institution against the backdrop of historical and contemporary pandemics. Consequently, we problematized hidden curriculum and unconscious assumptions to suggest research course design sequencing improvements. The …

Biased Representation Of Digital Feminist Activism: A Critical Look At Cyberfeminism, Muria Endah Sokowati, Sitti Amar Azizyah Puthe Taliu May 2024

Biased Representation Of Digital Feminist Activism: A Critical Look At Cyberfeminism, Muria Endah Sokowati, Sitti Amar Azizyah Puthe Taliu

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

The development of technology facilitated by computer networks creates ambiguity over women’s empowerment. On the one hand, the intersection of technology and women’s freedom of expression has led to the emergence of cyberfeminism. The participatory culture encourages the growth of feminist movements to facilitate public engagement and empowerment. However, several overlooked challenges persist in the representation of women’s concerns. Consequently, we undertook this study to offer critique and contemplation on digital feminist activity. This study presents a contradictory perspective, providing a counterbalance and an alternative narrative to the prevailing emphasis of previous research on the glorification of cyberfeminism and activism …

Three Essays On Communicative Planning: From The Perspective Of East Asians, Minji Cho May 2024

Three Essays On Communicative Planning: From The Perspective Of East Asians, Minji Cho

Dissertations and Theses

Communicative planning aims to strengthen the inclusiveness of planning by shifting the paradigm from the perception that the public is considered an object affected by the planning process to an active participant. In modern society, where people's values are more diverse, communicative planning can be an alternative way to reflect the opinions of people with diverse identities for decision-making. At the same time, however, it is criticized for its difficulty in universal application, particularly in non-Western countries. Scholars argue that since communicative planning theory is biased toward Anglo-Americans' context, it requires a specific contextual condition.

In this background, this dissertation …

Workplace Climate And Culture Experiences Of Black Lgbtq Public School K-12 Educators, Sidney Gaskins

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Recruiting and retaining Black educators is a problem in the United States. Research into specific subgroups within this population, such as Black LBGTQ educators, can help identify ways to address this problem. In this qualitative study, five individuals were recruited who self-identified as Black or African American, LGBTQ, hold a current teaching certificate, have taught more than three years, and were 30 years or older. Data were collected from participants through semistructured interviews, and those data were analyzed. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to allow for their voices, perspectives, and experiences to be heard directly. Findings revealed 11 themes associated …

The Carbonara Case: Italian Food And The Race To Conquer Consumers’ Memories, Marco Ginanneschi May 2024

The Carbonara Case: Italian Food And The Race To Conquer Consumers’ Memories, Marco Ginanneschi

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Can a recipe divide historians, gastronomes, and chefs? The answer is yes if we are dealing with carbonara, an iconic Italian dish, famous throughout the world. However, so much animosity could have deeper roots than the recently renewed controversy over its authorship suggests. This article aims to study the case of carbonara as an example of the race to conquer consumers’ memories. Following a transdisciplinary methodology, the author identifies three main approaches to the making of carbonara: glocal, regional, and creative. These approaches reflect distinct schools of thought regarding food within the diverse spectrum of Italian society. Their supporters - …

Obedient Bellies And The Coming Of Urbanization In Fourth Millennium Mesopotamia, Saikat Mukherjee May 2024

Obedient Bellies And The Coming Of Urbanization In Fourth Millennium Mesopotamia, Saikat Mukherjee

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Hunger has always been a persistent trauma of mankind in every age. As a matter of fact, “hunger” which according to Seth Richardson can be defined as the "routine and everyday sub-nutrition, less than a famine and more than a temporary inconvenience" is “one of the most powerful, pervasive and (arguably) emotive words in our historical vocabulary” (Richardson, 2016; Murton, 1988). Food has been the only way to satiate the mass cry and is overlooked by social and economic historians and/or archaeologists as a potent medium to understand an interdependent mass psychology. We seldom try to study food at the …

The Wild Arctic Char In Swedish Sápmi – From Staple Ingredient To Nostalgic Food, Julia C. Carrillo Ocampo

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The way food is preserved, prepared and consumed is embedded in cultural symbolism strongly connected to the geographical landscape. This article focuses on the memories of Sami actors within the wild Arctic char value chain to explore how changes in the foodscape influence the way this produce is prepared and consumed in contemporary Sápmi and the use and view of traditional preservation techniques. The empirical material was obtained through interviews and observations with Sami actors as they are the dominant agents related to this produce. Consequently, I traced different narratives attached to the char in the region called Swedish Sápmi …

The Subconscious Of Traditional Practices: Turkish Cuisine, Serife Umay Cicik May 2024

The Subconscious Of Traditional Practices: Turkish Cuisine, Serife Umay Cicik

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Turkey stands out among the leading countries, particularly in the consumption of meat, milk, and dairy products. In terms of climate and physical conditions, it has the capacity to produce these commodities domestically. Additionally, it is situated in a geographically advantageous position rich in seafood resources. Turkish cuisine is further enriched by dishes and desserts prepared with dough. However, food preparation and cooking methods, equipment, storage conditions, presentation styles, consumption habits, spices, and sauces bear traces of various culinary cultures. Wars, natural disasters, political events, trade routes, and religious structures are among the factors that most significantly influence these differences. …

Pork Problems - Embodied Britishisms Onboard The First Fleet To Australia, Evelyn Lambeth May 2024

Pork Problems - Embodied Britishisms Onboard The First Fleet To Australia, Evelyn Lambeth

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Pigs arrived in Australia with British settlers onboard the First Fleet in 1788 and rapidly spread. As a product of British Imperialism, Australia has adopted many cultural consumption practices from its parent colony. Meat is on many tables, but not every table showcases the same animal, and these cultural differences illustrate that conditions of edibility are not equally defined. British values were attached to pigs, embedding them with transformative abilities to shape colonial ecosystems. Australian industries, jobs, and livelihoods are deeply connected to the past. The East India Company introduced Chinese pigs to Britain from 1685. The history of pigs …

Insider Research In Migration And Music Sociology: Contextualizing Indigenous And (G)Local Method(Ologie)S In Studying Migrant Musicians, Carljohnson Anacin May 2024

Insider Research In Migration And Music Sociology: Contextualizing Indigenous And (G)Local Method(Ologie)S In Studying Migrant Musicians, Carljohnson Anacin

The Qualitative Report

Researching migrants in various geographical and social environments necessitates the use of culturally sensitive and contextualized modes of understanding. Migrants’ perspectives, lifeways, and knowledge need to be recognized through proper historical and cultural perspectives. This article discusses the use and potential application of culturally contextualized method(ologie)s in conducting insider research in migration and music sociology, both of which have traditionally been dominated by Western methodologies and scholars. The use of the Filipino method(ologie)s – pakikipagkuwentuhan and pakikilahok – is examined as applied in understanding musical experiences and everydayness of Filipino musicians in Australia. Furthermore, I demonstrate that in such interdisciplinary …

The Influence Of Western Music And The Wind Band In The Republic Of Korea, Mark Reimer May 2024

The Influence Of Western Music And The Wind Band In The Republic Of Korea, Mark Reimer

Journal of Global Awareness

Beginning with the arrival of American missionaries in 1885, the music of South Korea continues to reflect Western tonality, aesthetics, education, and popular taste. Through this musical and historical evolution, however, the country has not forsaken its traditions, musical imprint, and cultural identity, as will be discussed in the examination of select composers and music compositions.

Trace, Trauma And Tradition In The Sopranos, Lisa Davies May 2024

Trace, Trauma And Tradition In The Sopranos, Lisa Davies

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper uses gastrocriticism – literary criticism that draws on disciplines such as sociology, anthropology and cultural studies – as a lens to establish the use of food as a symbolic marker of traces, trauma and traditions in the HBO series, The Sopranos. The Sopranos is a story of an Italian-American crime family in which food is uniquely central to the plot: a mob-boss is in therapy due to food-related panic attacks. Food is used in a variety of ways; as a narrative device; as a symbol of greed, power and status; and as a token of ethnic and …

Equality In Programming For Girls And Boys: Adolescents' Shared Experiences From An After-School Support Program In Urban Nairobi, Nelson Muhia, Benta Abuya May 2024

Equality In Programming For Girls And Boys: Adolescents' Shared Experiences From An After-School Support Program In Urban Nairobi, Nelson Muhia, Benta Abuya

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

There has been marked progress in access to education, representation of women in leadership, sexual reproductive health, and gender-based violence as a result of gender equality initiatives. However, there is still a strong focus on interventions targeting girls only. Through the adolescents’ lens, this study sought to establish if there is a preference for interventions targeting girls compared to boys in two urban informal settlements; and what benefits were realized from programming for both adolescent boys and girls enrolled in an after-school support program. We employed a thematic analysis approach to answer the research questions. Results showed that most interventions …

Memories Of Food And (Be)Longing: Secularised Jewish Recipes In Hungary Before 1945, Lili Zách May 2024

Memories Of Food And (Be)Longing: Secularised Jewish Recipes In Hungary Before 1945, Lili Zách

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Although the first Hungarian-language Holocaust cookbook, entitled Recipes for Survival (ed. Szilvia Czingel), was only published in 2013, it brought thus far unknown Hungarian primary sources (secretly hand-written recipe scraps from the Lichtenwörth concentration camp, 1944-1945) and issues (such as fantasising about cooking and recipe writing as survival strategies) into the foreground of Holocaust research as well as food history scholarship. Among others, Louise O. Vasvári (2014 and 2016) and András Koerner (2018) have explored the socio-cultural significance of these Jewish women’s reminiscences within the context of Holocaust Life Writing and Jewish Cuisine, respectively. And while they both highlighted that …

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

La Centralita Culinary Studio, a small business in Albany, New York I opened in December 2021 with my creative partner Yuri Morejón (from Bilbao, Spain), is dedicated to teaching small groups of people about the cuisines of Spain through private cooking classes, pedagogical tasting experiences, and themed events. As a complement to our respective careers as consultant and professor, we bring our expertise in these areas to each unique event. We started the business after observing a need for contextualized pedagogy about Spain’s diverse cuisines in the US. Specifically, our guests often have negative memories of anchovies and are hesitant …

The Philosophical Thoughts Of Vajiravudh: A Dialogical Analysis From The Perspective Of Critical Filipino Philosophy, Fpa Demeterio Iii May 2024

The Philosophical Thoughts Of Vajiravudh: A Dialogical Analysis From The Perspective Of Critical Filipino Philosophy, Fpa Demeterio Iii

Mabini Review

Vajiravudh (1881-1925), or King Rama VI of Siam, son of Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) and brother of Prajadhipok (King Rama VII), was a writer, nationalist, reformist, known as the Maha Thiraraja (philosopher king), and a creative genius among the Thai people. His context of a semi-colonial country that was pressured to embrace globalization and modernization still resonates with the conditions of some parts of Southeast Asia, such as the Philippines. This paper explored his philosophical ideas from the point of view of critical Filipino philosophy, a family of discourses that can be traced back to the musings of the late …

Mabini Review

The First Cry of the Philippine Revolution is one of the most important event in our nations history, It served as the spark for the beginning of the Filipino uprising against the Spaniards who ruled and controlled the Philippines as a colony for more than 300 years. The start of the revolution is also a mean in the process of establishing a revolutionary government which is dedicated to fight the once powerful Spanish empire in order to achieve the freedom of the people from foreign oppressors. Despite being a significant historical event, controversies regarding when and where the first cry …

Utilizing Existing Postfeminist Framework To Explore A Sexualized Media Test Case: “Man Needs A Woman” By Maty Noyes, Nicole Doris

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

Postfeminism is simply referred to as the most recent wave of feminism, but feminist scholars have failed to reach a standardized definition that recognizes the nuances of sexuality, media, and culture present within the field. This paper utilizes the postfeminist framework of two prominent feminist scholars: Rosalind Gill and Feona Attwood. Specifically, this paper draws from Gill’s interpretation of postfeminism and Attwood’s interpretation of the sexualization of culture and the overlap between the two theories. Rather than attempt to offer a concrete definition in such a rapidly evolving field, this paper offers a music video from a lesser-known pop artist, …
