A Qualitative Analysis Of White Nationalist Patriotic Discourse, Miguel Angel Vazquez
A Qualitative Analysis Of White Nationalist Patriotic Discourse, Miguel Angel Vazquez
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
In the last decade, the U.S. has seen a significant uptick in White nationalist ideology, particularly because individuals espousing these extremist ideologies believe their group and the U.S. are under attack by non-White groups (Osborne et al., 2019). As a result, there are prevailing narratives that are used as patriotic rallying cries that center around the desire to progress the country towards White nationalist ideals (e.g., a country for a by White people), to regress the country back to a time where White people had their own eco-system of Whiteness (i.e., the golden days), and to protect and fight for …
Elementary School Teachers’ Lived Experience Teaching Remotely During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Natasha Gorman
Elementary School Teachers’ Lived Experience Teaching Remotely During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Natasha Gorman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Teaching experiences changed during COVID-19 from face-to-face to online, and teachers encountered numerous challenges. Considerable research has been conducted on many of the issues that teachers at different grade levels faced in this transition. The experiences of elementary school teachers, however, have not received much attention. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of elementary school teachers who taught remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding their challenges may lead to the development of appropriate resources and specific training for teachers in these early grades. The theoretical foundation that grounded this study was Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems …

The Sponsorship Function In Collegiate Athletics: Discussing A Potential Outcome Of The Jenkins V. Ncaa Lawsuit, John A. Fortunato
The Sponsorship Function In Collegiate Athletics: Discussing A Potential Outcome Of The Jenkins V. Ncaa Lawsuit, John A. Fortunato
Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal
The Jenkins v. Nat'1 Collegiate Athletic Ass'n ("Jenkins") lawsuit is now at the forefront of the legal challenges that could forever alter the economic system of collegiate athletics. The Jenkins lawsuit claims that the NCAA and the five power conferences are violating antitrust laws by colluding in creating a system where all universities are restricted in only offering scholarships of equal value to players. The plaintiffs are seeking a ruling that will essentially create a system where there is competition in the recruitment and compensation of players. If a court ruling produces this open market system, universities will need additional …
Exploring Cultural, Health, And Technology Intersections: A Focus On Migrant Experiences, Merna Mina, Sahij Gill
Exploring Cultural, Health, And Technology Intersections: A Focus On Migrant Experiences, Merna Mina, Sahij Gill
Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
Despite the plethora of theories and frameworks addressing culture, health, and technology adoption, there remains a notable absence of a unifying theory that comprehensively encompasses all three aspects, particularly concerning newcomers. The Health Belief Model, for example, underscores individual perceptions and attitudes toward health yet fails to consider the intricate interplay between cultural factors and technology adoption among immigrant populations. The Healthy Immigrant Effect, which posits that immigrants often exhibit better health outcomes than native-born individuals, does not mention the role of technology on health outcomes. Acculturation theories, while shedding light on the adaptation process, often fall short of explaining …

Reflections On Reality: A Phenomenological Study Of Culture Shock On Students From The Provinces, Justine Therese A. Gochangco
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
This study covers phenomenology and aesthetics through a review of different accounts and lived experiences, using art installation as a medium to express the artist’s understanding of the world. Culture shock is a phenomenon that individuals experience when they feel disoriented due to the unfamiliar environment they find themselves in. This shock encapsulates changes within the individual’s perception of how they see themselves among Others in their new environment and is best expressed in the philosophical discussions of Jean-Paul Sartre. This study aims to discuss the link between Sartre’s philosophy and the phenomenon of culture shock as experienced by students …
Theory-Based Science Communication At Comic Cons, Lisa Lundgren, Emily Slater, Man Zhang, Kadie Kunz, Gabriel-Philip Santos
Theory-Based Science Communication At Comic Cons, Lisa Lundgren, Emily Slater, Man Zhang, Kadie Kunz, Gabriel-Philip Santos
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
The majority of research concerning science communication happens in spaces where people already have a vested interest in or knowledge of science, such as museums and science cafes. Thus, there is a gap in understanding what theory-based science communication looks like in non-science-centered spaces. This qualitative research study, which featured cosplaying science communicators at comic conventions, offers insights into what science communication practices occur within everyday spaces. We conducted observations of and semi-structured interviews with 15 cosplaying scientists, examining how they utilized effective framing and narrative structuring when communicating science at comic cons in cosplay. Across 700 coded utterances, cosplaying …

Conferences
Violence and war can be incited, and so can peace. This volume shares select addresses and responses from Seton Hall University’s 2/7/23 conference “Inciting Peace From The Inside Out.” A multi-disciplinary range of scholars each addresses how reconciliation processes grow from spiritual dynamics. Multiple religious traditions teach contemplative praxes that prioritize and nurture personal reflection oriented toward peace. Social conflicts divide, so engaging them with a partisan orientation only serves to escalate harmful rifts. In contrast, bringing personal awareness and sensitivity, spiritual balance, and holistic integral perspective to conflict can transcend divisions and work toward unity. This volume is supported …
Viral Peer Advice: Health Memes Used As Speech Acts Of Advising In English, Laurel Smith Stvan
Viral Peer Advice: Health Memes Used As Speech Acts Of Advising In English, Laurel Smith Stvan
Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive
To better represent online health communication modes, an English-language corpus of lay health discourse was expanded to include health-related memes. Using these forms of peer-to-peer lay communication, I propose ways to categorize the illocutionary force of memes when they function as speech acts of advice. The subcorpus contains 200 English-language health-related memes gathered during 2018-2023 through Google image searches. I found the affiliative and disaffiliative strategies that Placencia (2012) noted within Yahoo! Respuestas advice exchanges; with meme multimodality, however, additional versions of these strategies appeared: characters used as sympathetic or encouraging affiliative features, but also chastising or disapproving characters as …
The Significance Of Nyerere’S African Socialism Today: Embracing ‘Utu’ For Promoting Good Governance, Eric Clement Mgalula
The Significance Of Nyerere’S African Socialism Today: Embracing ‘Utu’ For Promoting Good Governance, Eric Clement Mgalula
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper examines the enduring application of Nyerere’s African socialism, focusing on ‘utu’ (humanness) as a transformative principle for governance. By emphasizing values such as gender equality, rule of law, and accountability rooted in Bantu traditions, the study positions ‘utu’ as essential for fostering justice and ethical leadership. Utilizing a library-based research methodology, it critically analyses secondary literature and employs philosophical analysis and deductive reasoning to evaluate Nyerere’s ideology. The research critiques the limited success of neoliberal reforms in Africa. Critics linking African socialism’s shortcomings to ideological flaws are challenged with evidence highlighting external factors like global economic shifts and …

Replication Study On Ostracism And Self-Isolation The Role Of Shame And Guilt, Zhi Quan Lim
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the ostracism and solitude-seeking link by conceptually replicating the two studies (Ren et al., 2016; 2022) using different methods of inducing the feeling of being ostracized in the participants. In this study, I asked participants to recall a memory of being ostracized to induce the feeling of being ostracized. I am also interested in if shame and guilt mediate this connection. One hundred and thirty-two participants took part in the study. I divided the participants into two groups (the ostracized group and the control group). After finishing the first task, the participants took a modified version of …

Comparative Bioactivity Assessment Of Bixin Pigment And Associated Phytochemicals Extracted From Annatto Seeds Using Conventional And Green Solvents, Sonakshi Puri, Sumit Kumar Mandal, Harshit Jain, Pankaj Kumar Sharma, Perinkulam Ravi Deepa
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Nutraceuticals, that include food ingredients and bioactives from natural products, confer physiological health benefits and protection against chronic diseases. Annatto is a tropical shrub grown in Central and South America and parts of India. Its seeds are rich in the edible carotenoid-derived apocarotenoid pigment, bixin, which is used as a natural colorant in food, textiles, and cosmetics, and is now gaining attention for its potential health-promoting attributes. Here, we compared a green solvent (ethyl lactate) based extraction of bixin and associated metabolites in annatto seeds (crushed and seed coat) with two other conventional solvents (acetone and acid-base). Bixin was characterized …
Riding Shotgun: Authenticity And Discovery, James Washington Jr
Riding Shotgun: Authenticity And Discovery, James Washington Jr
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The truth hurts.” So, my family said to me from my earliest comprehension. The poet’s fundamental ethic requires a commitment to authenticity, at the intersection of myriad creative possibilities. How to write poems about family, friends, and life experiences, mine included, through honest interrogation? Fortunately, empathy and truth are not mutually exclusive. When I began my thesis, my poems written during MALS enrollment were scattered, print and electronic. I could have saved myself plenty of time had I been a good curator. So said, there was an upside to gathering the strays. I was afforded the benefit of thematic discovery …
Too Big To Fail: The Penn State Scandal And The Crisis Of The Corporate University, Jordan Bass, Joshua I. Newman
Too Big To Fail: The Penn State Scandal And The Crisis Of The Corporate University, Jordan Bass, Joshua I. Newman
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
In the fall of 2011, the Pennsylvania State University campus was rocked by a sexual abuse scandal involving former football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Details of the crimes and the multiple cover-ups by university officials shocked the nation. In this article, we first argue that more attention needs to be paid to the institutional hegemony the Nittany Lion football program had over the university, the town, the state, the Big Ten Conference, and the NCAA. We argue that the increasing corporatization of higher education and college athletics, at least, partially contributed to an organizational culture in which multiple individual actors …

“But It’S Joe Pa!” The Effects Of Social Identification On Sport Fan Perceptions Of The Penn State Case, Jason R. Lanter
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
This study examined the attitudes of football fans towards the recent events at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). The child sexual abuse allegations at Penn State led to the firing of the long-time head football coach and resignation of the university president. Using a snowball sampling technique, participants completed an online questionnaire that assessed their identification with the Penn State football team and their attitudes towards Penn State, and the coach and president. The fans who were high-identified with the football team were expected to demonstrate more support for the actions of, and less perceived responsibility and blame for …

Did I Do That?: Lived Experience And Media Representation Of The Awkward Black Girl, Kendra Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For my thesis project I will introduce the Awkward Black Girl as a new race gender script. Though there are minor nuances of the Awkward Black Girl within television, Issa Rae’s performance of the Awkward Black Girl in Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl and the HBO hit series Insecure remains prevalent to contemporary media representations. Though there is limited scholarship within the field of Communication available about the Awkward Black Girl, most of the scholarship consists of analysis and discourse centering Rae’s portrayal in her web series and television show. I explore Quinta Brunson’s portrayal of the Awkward Black Girl …

Resisting Resistance: Activism In/And The Political Economy Of Intercollegiate Athletics, Anthony J. Weems, Yannick Kluch
Resisting Resistance: Activism In/And The Political Economy Of Intercollegiate Athletics, Anthony J. Weems, Yannick Kluch
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Drawing from political economic analysis, this essay argues the structural and ideological function of college sport is to maintain hegemonic order in the face of athlete activism. Briefly outlining the political economy of college sport, the authors point to how this political economy actively constrains athlete activism as a counter-hegemonic challenge. The authors discuss implications in the context of scholarly activism and call for a more radical, integrative orientation to research and teaching in relation to sporting activism(s). In doing so, this essay argues there is potential to challenge hegemonic structures that minimize agency and ultimately reshape the political economy …
Exploring How Sino-Business Culture Informs United States Business Negotiation Practice, Chase Peterson
Exploring How Sino-Business Culture Informs United States Business Negotiation Practice, Chase Peterson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Numerous scholarly works have explored the intricacies of negotiating with China. This paper aims to add value to previous research by providing insights deduced from cross-cultural communication with individuals from the People's Republic of China (PRC), while emphasizing the advantages of adaptation of Chinese business culture by U.S. negotiators. The United States Institute of Peace observed several biases among U.S. negotiators including a tendency to accept initial solutions prematurely, as well as a lack of understanding regarding counterparts' objectives and contextual circumstances (Quinney 2002). The strengths of Chinese business culture help remedy these tendencies and inform Western negotiators how different …

This phenomenological study aimed to develop a framework integrating play into preschool curriculum based on educators’ lived experiences using play-based methods. Fifteen educators from 12 centers were interviewed using theoretical sampling. Data analysis revealed nine pathways linking play types, educator roles, and learning objectives. Results culminated in a comprehensive framework elucidating how educators actualize educational goals through play.
Teaching Critical Language Awareness To Combat Failure Of Black Language In Education, Kathleen Turner Ledgerwood
Teaching Critical Language Awareness To Combat Failure Of Black Language In Education, Kathleen Turner Ledgerwood
Feminist Pedagogy
Currently most educational systems teach students there is a singular, “correct” way to write. Moralizing language regarding an arbitrary system of standardized English writing, a White Mainstream English (WME) connotes a failure for other languages to conform to a white standard. I teach at a small, open-enrollment, Historically Black University in the Midwest where most of my students explain that their biggest fear is academic failure. The majority of my students self-identify as Black and are Pell Grant eligible. When I surveyed my students, they reported that their biggest fear is failure, both in the class and in the university …
A Call To Examine Queer Instructors’ Identity Disclosures In The Classroom, Mac Clark
A Call To Examine Queer Instructors’ Identity Disclosures In The Classroom, Mac Clark
Feminist Pedagogy
Despite the academy and students’ attitudes progressing towards queer instructors (Boren & McPherson, 2018), there is limited scholarship regarding the disclosure of queer identities in the classroom. In ignoring issues of queer disclosure, the communication discipline fails to challenge heteronormative assumptions of instructor identity. My Critical Commentary asks feminist scholars to go beyond traditional conceptions of instructor identities to combat this marginalization. I assert researchers should prioritize deconstructing heteronormativity, apply queer theory, and revisit notions of the classroom closet in their scholarship. By doing so, I argue communication scholars will equip institutions to better support queer faculty and students alike.
An Analysis And Comparison Of The Learning Experiences Of 4th Year Business Students In Tud Blanchardstown Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic., Neil Chambers
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic brought about the closure of schools and third-level institutions across the world, causing teaching and assessment to switch from face-to-face to online. The objective of this research is to analyse and compare the learning experiences of college students before and during the pandemic. It presents a cross-sectional study of fourth-year business-faculty students at Technological University Dublin, using a mixed-method approach that included two focus groups and the distribution of a questionnaire. Findings from the focus groups highlighted students’ perceptions of a lack of interaction with lecturers and with other students, but greater flexibility in online …

Collaboration, Relationships And Fleeting Opportunities: Growing The Future Early Childhood Music Education Workforce, Karen Wickett, Jane Parker
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
The aim of, Jane’s, Soundwaves Early Childhood Music lead, and Karen’s, Early Childhood Studies lecturer, inquiry is to encourage new insights into how multiple relationalities and learning play out, throughout Soundwaves, an early childhood music education (ECME) programme. We work with Barad’s diffractive methodology to shape our auto-ethnography. With pens, sparkly bits, ribbons, glue and paper, we map the Soundwaves narrative. Caring ethics, for the human and more-than-human, runs throughout our research practices. (Re)turning, the data, posthuman and critical new materialist theory, the Soundwaves narrative is (re)told. Concerns the neo-liberal narrative had played us, were replaced, when noticing the gap …

Do You Know Where Your Games Come From? Artificial Intelligence And Game Development, Andrew Begemann
International Journal of Emerging and Disruptive Innovation in Education : VISIONARIUM
ABSTRACT
This paper was written to explore the possible effects of artificial intelligence being implemented in the design pipeline of video game development. In it, we will explore a history of artificial intelligence, from its early imaginings in books and philosophy, to its current iterations, such as ChatGPT and other popular engines like Midjourney and Stable diffusion. We will also discuss steps in game development so as to understand where the potential implementations of artificial intelligence can, will, or does occur. Following those explanations, we will explore the three methodologies of Marxism, Psychoanalysis, and Cultural Studies as ways of examining …
