“What Memory Wants From Me”: Contemporary Female Writers On The Calling To Remember, Daria Smirnova
“What Memory Wants From Me”: Contemporary Female Writers On The Calling To Remember, Daria Smirnova
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the intersections of transnational memory studies and feminist autobiographical writing through the works of Maria Stepanova, Annie Ernaux, and Lea Ypi. It argues that contemporary literature, especially that written by women, provides innovative frameworks for understanding identity, memory, and the sociopolitical context of our time. By examining how these authors intertwine personal and collective histories, the study highlights the shift in memory studies from monumental, nation-centered history to transnational, mobile memory modalities. I have pinpointed three themes to which these authors significantly contribute within the feminist and political discourse on memory: the relationship between gender and memory, …
Croning Academics: Menopause Matters In Higher Education, Marie Lavelle, Joanna Haynes, Emma Macleod-Johnstone
Croning Academics: Menopause Matters In Higher Education, Marie Lavelle, Joanna Haynes, Emma Macleod-Johnstone
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This writing is born out of our experiences of becoming older women, academy hags, facing the performative demands of the neoliberalising patriarchal university. We are raging. With the figure of the Crone, and feminist-killjoy-croning as our creative and livid research method (Ahmed, 2023), we squeeze time out/with impossible university spaces and schedules to tend to grey matters. The paper traces the normalisation of menopause policies in workplaces and universities, following the social trending and capitalisation of menopausal and ageing matters. We question what menopause policies do and argue they constitute a failed project for the advancement of gender equality and …
Three Zafimaniry Carvings From The Southern Highlands Of Madagascar And Their Symbolic Meaning, Emily Krupp
Three Zafimaniry Carvings From The Southern Highlands Of Madagascar And Their Symbolic Meaning, Emily Krupp
Theses
The Zafimaniry people are a community living in the southern highlands of Madagascar, most known for their geometric, low-relief works of art that they carve onto wooden surfaces throughout their villages. The shapes that make up the designs signify the Zafimaniry people's ideologies, but motifs carved into the homes specifically represent their beliefs about marriage and societal structure. Three metaphorical symbols have been translated within the motifs by the Zafimaniry people as the patriarch, the family, and the community. A comparative cultural study between the motifs on Zafimaniry window shutters and Swahili doorways reveal similarities in material culture, visual elements …

Communication Between China And The West, Wenshan Jia, Anna Kolotova
Communication Between China And The West, Wenshan Jia, Anna Kolotova
Communication Faculty Books and Book Chapters
In the twenty-first century the world is facing issues arising in areas which previously seemed to be stable and peaceful. For almost half a century, since China–USA relations normalised, China and the West have engaged in various activities, contributing not only to life of their citizenry, but also providing the basis for a large variety of research in different areas, including communication studies. Examinations of communication between these two different civilisations fit perfectly into the discipline of intercultural communication which help unravel specific differences and narrow gaps between these civilisations.
Particular attention is given to philosophical aspects which reveal the …
A Greater Distance Between The Readers And The Recounted Story In Salvatore Besso’S Travel Book: The Function Of The Picture Postcards, Panita Silapavithayadilok
A Greater Distance Between The Readers And The Recounted Story In Salvatore Besso’S Travel Book: The Function Of The Picture Postcards, Panita Silapavithayadilok
Journal of Letters
This article analyses the scanned picture postcards in Salvatore Besso’s travel book with the aim to point out how they assume a crucial role in changing the main theme of the narrative on Siam in this book. From two main themes that run along together in the written narrative, exotism of Siamese culture and the recognition that Siam gained from Western nations, the scanned picture postcards lead the readers to focus particularly, if not only, on the first theme. This article seeks to shed more light to the significance of intermedial perspective in delving into subtle motives in cultural encounters. …

Rural Black Women’S Self-Help Activism In The Arkansas Delta, Local Heritage, And Global Resonance: Mrs. Gertha Bailey Trice And The Lee County Self-Help Project, Swity Sultana Monni
Student Theses and Dissertations
In the mid-to-late twentieth century, through outstanding and transformative leadership, rural Black women activists in the Arkansas Delta worked to confront significant problems facing their communities, in the contexts of health, education, and social justice; their efforts were often apolitical in nature, at least overtly. These women went beyond the demands of many mid-twentieth-century civil rights activists to create spaces to articulate and demand human rights, broadly conceived. This in-depth study explores the community activism of Gertha Bailey Trice of Lee County, Arkansas, who engaged in broadly defined African American self-help traditions through her work with the Lee County Self …

The Hidden Forms Of Violence In The Lives Of Professional Women In Tagamoa, New Cairo, Nouran Elhariry
The Hidden Forms Of Violence In The Lives Of Professional Women In Tagamoa, New Cairo, Nouran Elhariry
Theses and Dissertations
The desire to craft new lifestyles is the main drive for the relocation to New Cairo among Egypt’s upper middle classes. This research is focusing on the upper middle class--people who still rely on their incomes from working to maintain their status—as opposed to the elite upper class, who rely on incomes from property, investments, inheritance, and other forms of intergenerational wealth. These communities were enmeshed in high degrees of domestic violence. The power-relations reconfigured in the domestic sphere, with increasing numbers of upper middle class women embarking on professional careers while navigating households and family relations, have opened the …
Training In Trauma-Responsive And Anti-Racist Telehealth: A Model For Behavioral Health Clinicians And Providers, Ritchie Rubio
Training In Trauma-Responsive And Anti-Racist Telehealth: A Model For Behavioral Health Clinicians And Providers, Ritchie Rubio
Psychology Division Scholarship
Telehealth's uptake in behavioral health services has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many clinicians continue to lack focused training in providing trauma-informed and culturally-responsive telehealth care. This article outlines a model curriculum that was created to instruct and coach behavioral health providers in California on how to integrate anti-racist and trauma-responsive techniques into telehealth. Topics like evidence-based trauma therapies, racial/ ethnic trauma, marginalized communities, digital divide, and provider selfcare were all covered in the nine-part curriculum. Every three-hour session included evidence-informed didactic content, telehealth skills practice, and concrete planning for implementation. Trauma-responsive frameworks such as the tri-phasic model …

Healing Our Designing: Practices Of Care For Human And More-Than-Human Relations, Marysol Ortega Pallanez
Healing Our Designing: Practices Of Care For Human And More-Than-Human Relations, Marysol Ortega Pallanez
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Ongoing socio-ecological damages stem from dominant design practices rooted in modernist, capitalist ideologies that exploit nature. If we, designers, aim to contribute to healing the web of life, our practices also need healing. Seeking an alternative paradigm to problem-driven design, this article narrates my journey to embrace a paradigm of relation-caring that encompasses humans and more-than-humans. Drawing upon experiences with fellow embroiderers in Hermosillo, Mexico, I present two everyday design practices that explore women-plant relations in the desert: 1) cultivating relationships by embroidery of memories, presents, and futures with plants; and 2) infusing diálogo de saberes (wisdom dialogues) with embodied …

Design For Manufacturing: Rehumanising Digital Manufacturing, Mersha Aftab, Rebecca Grant, Mey Goh Goh, Iryna Yesseyeva
DRS Biennial Conference Series
What role is design research playing in the re-humanisation of digital manufacturing? This theme track aims to bring transdisciplinary researchers together, looking at how design explores, supports, and leads digital transformation within the manufacturing sectors worldwide to be more people-centred. Design research significantly contributes to digital transformation within the private and public sectors. Regarding manufacturing, existing literature provides measurable readiness levels, such as the technology readiness index (TRI) (Parasuraman, 2000; Parasuraman & Colby, 2015; Tsikriktsis, 2004) or the Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). However, these models do not consider people and their perceived efficacy for new technologies. Design research and human-centred …

Designing For Intimate Wellbeing: Aidee, A Qualitative Approach To Urine Home Monitoring, Margherita Motta, Delphine Ribes Lemay, Sebastian Baez-Lugo, Annelaure Klaus, Nicolas Henchoz, Emily Groves
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Despite the widespread use of self-tracking technologies for promoting personal wellbeing, there is limited research on the monitoring of intimate data, particularly urine. To shed light on the design possibilities within this unexplored domain we designed Aidee, a prototype system composed of an app and interactive device that assists users in performing urine monitoring through qualitative data expression and ambient physicalization. To evaluate our prototype we conducted an exploratory between-subjects study involving 54 participants. Our findings indicate user acceptance for qualitative data expressions in the domain of personal wellbeing. Moreover, our study underscores that the combination of an app and …

Design sketching in analogue, tablet, and immersive technologies, combined with artificial intelligence, is rapidly evolving and is primed for reinterpretation and further contextualisation. Discussions about analogue and digital sketching, live and online education, traditional and emerging visual contexts, generative and explanatory visual knowledge, emerging technology and methods, and the visual power and speed of sketching with artificial intelligence have seeded the ground to reassess our relationships with the role of sketching, and visual knowledge. The “Design Sketching and Visualization, Futures & Research” track welcomes visual or written research papers from industry professionals and academics on three topics: 1- Analogue and …
Anticolonial Prospects For Overcoming The Coloniality Of Making In Design, Carmem Saito, Rodrigo Freese Gonzatto, Frederick Van Amstel
Anticolonial Prospects For Overcoming The Coloniality Of Making In Design, Carmem Saito, Rodrigo Freese Gonzatto, Frederick Van Amstel
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design has been instrumental in preserving the coloniality of making – a set of ideological, cultural, political, market and relational processes that operate to identify, categorise and hierarchise different making practices that benefit the metropolises at globalised production structures. This paper presents a theoretical examination of the coloniality of making based on the anticolonial scholarship of the Design & Oppression Network. The examination proceeds with three prospective studies to overcome this form of coloniality in fashion, interaction, and graphic design. The first part of each study denounces how design reproduces the hierarchy between intellectual and manual labour and justifies class, …
Design Principles Of The Pluriversal Design Paradigm, Eveline Van Zeeland
Design Principles Of The Pluriversal Design Paradigm, Eveline Van Zeeland
DRS Biennial Conference Series
When scientists embrace a different paradigm, this naturally leads to a shift in aca-demic behavior. While the importance and necessity of the pluriversal design framework are evident, understanding how this paradigm influences academic conduct is less clear. Through a systematic literature review of 103 academic papers on the pluriversal approach, it is deducted what it is that researchers do or suggest to do when shaping their research and design practice through the pluriversal de-sign paradigm. In this study, the pluriversal design paradigm is distilled into a set of foundational prerequisites and design principles. These design principles can be applied by …
Faculty Wellbeing In Corporate Academia: A Critical Examination And Reimaging Of The Curriculum Vitae, Aaron Ganci
Faculty Wellbeing In Corporate Academia: A Critical Examination And Reimaging Of The Curriculum Vitae, Aaron Ganci
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Faculty wellbeing is declining among US higher education faculty, and burnout is becoming increasingly common. This study examines the role of design artifacts, namely the curriculum vitae (CV), within this dynamic. The CV has succumbed to interconnected social forces, including neoliberalism and inclusive democratization, fundamentally altering its design and the connected faculty experience. To better understand if design action might improve faculty wellbeing, this study employs a transformative research design to examine how the CV might be reimagined to promote positive transformation and improved wellbeing. This mixed-method qualitative study utilizes a novel bend of interviews, participatory co-design activities, and a …

Pluriversal Design In One Situated Place: An Approach Rooted In The Interface Between The Local And The Global, Iris Y. Luo, Renata M. Leitao
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This essay posits that a Place-Based approach is the prerequisite for fostering fruitful and mutually-respectful form of social design in the emerging paradigm of pluriversality – contextualized within the contemporary global order. The concept of "Place" serves as the nexus between the Local and the Global: it's where intermediaries reside, translation unfolds, and power dynamics intensify. By examining four historical phases from the pre-colonial period through post-modernity, this work looks into the evolution of the concept of Place and its role in the construction of power. This discussion encourages designers to ground themselves in the local, embedded within communities, while …
Repositioning Design As The New Attractor In Sustainability, Clee Zhuo Wang, Yiying Wu, Laurent Gutierrez
Repositioning Design As The New Attractor In Sustainability, Clee Zhuo Wang, Yiying Wu, Laurent Gutierrez
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design’s increasing participation in sustainability raises questions on what sustainability it serves and how. Contextualized in a cartography of sustainability discourse and its four typologies, we establish that design’s efforts on sustainability to date are largely affiliated to the mainstream socio-technological pathway, a continuation of the modernization project deepening the crises. This affiliation, while granting design access to the increasingly active field of sustainability, risks reducing its versatile epistemology to amusing representation. Drawing from Human-Nature Relationships (HNR) research, we propose the utilization of the "sustainability space" as an analytical tool. The processual, embodied, and affective qualities inherent in design are …

‘Does Phosphorus Want To Sound Like That?’: Experiencing More-Than-Human Futures, Anton Poikolainen Rosén, Camillo Sanchez, Felix Anand Epp
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The paper explores the learning possible from including the public in explora-tions of more-than-human future visions. We presented an installation at a de-sign festival of a speculative scenario that emerged from ethnographic research with urban permaculture farmers, using sounds to represent concentrations of nutrients in soil. We studied how visitors wearing a sensor ring experienced the playing of these sounds upon insertion of a finger in the installation’s soil. Re-sponses underscore the importance of cultivating the skill of noticing through deep listening, alongside the profound connection thus established between humans and the more-than-human world. In a further contribution to more-than-human …

Reflection is a core element of our everyday lives for higher self-insight and better well-being. Guided conversation is one of the methods that supports reflective thinking. The increasing abilities of conversational agent systems make them potential reflection partners for the future. Home is suitable for engaging in reflective conversations with conversational agents on daily experiences since it provides a private space. We explore the user expectations and design considerations for reflection with conversational agents through a mixed-method approach with design/HCI researchers. We first explored a psychology-based reflection approach with a diary study. Then, we designed a future-oriented methodology, adapted our …
