Daily Campus Archives
In 1896, the students of the Storrs Agricultural College established a student newspaper, The Lookout. Published every month, The Lookout had a small, unpaid staff who laid out the pages by hand using tiny metal slugs with embossed letters from a printer's California job case. By 1914, the paper had changed its name to The Connecticut Campus, reflecting the growth of the institution that had become the Connecticut Agricultural College in 1899 and the student newspaper increased its publication schedule to twice a month. The paper continued to grow along with the campus in Storrs, CT, and in 1953 the …

The Biology Of The Bacillus Violaceus Laurentius Or Pseudomonas Janthina, Grace Roodde Rueda
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The first mention of pigment producing growth is of great antiquity. It aroused the suspicion of the ancients, worked on the religious zeal of the people of the Middle Ages, and today solicits the study and investigation of modern scientists. In the light of our present cultural means of study the chromogenic group of bacteria is especially interesting. The products can be easily watched and as easily segregated. Each organism can be classed together under color and can thus be definitely recognized. The B. prodigiosus is such an organism. It responds fully to laboratory methods. It has been thoroughly studied …

Student and Lippitt Prize Essays
Beginning with a detailed history of the sparks that led to the Revolution in France (1789–1799), this essay gives French women praise by illustrating the specific types of women who assisted in the Revolution: the women of the mob, Charlotte Corday, Madame Roland, Madame de Stael, the Princess de Lamballe and Marie Antoinette.

It is with peculiar pleasure that I stand before this new department of Natural Science Instruction, and I deem it a great honor that you have asked me to preside over its deliberations. It is an important sign of the times that such a department as this should have been organized by the scientific men of the country. It is significant of a broader view of the work of scientific men that we find so many here to-day to take part in the first meeting of a department which has for its object the discussion of questions pertaining to the …

The Anchor: 1891
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

JADARA
Using grounded theory analysis, the current study identifies the perspectives of therapists and counselors regarding the nature of informal and formal resources supporting the treatment of deaf individuals with trauma. Nineteen counselors and therapists were interviewed, and accessibility, formal support, informal networks, and gaps in resources were identified as salient themes. Subsequent analysis identified concerns with confidentiality as a strong theme. This study emphasizes the need for counselors and therapists to become mindful of utilizing resources to support the treatment of trauma while being concerned with confidentiality.

Parents' Interests And Abilities As Sources Of Young Children's Everyday Learning Opportunities, Carl J. J. Dunst 4320065
Journal of Family Strengths
Findings from a national survey of parents’ strengths (personal interests and individual abilities) and how interests and abilities were used as sources of young children’s everyday learning opportunities are reported. The participants were 368 parents of young children birth to 6 years of age residing in 49 of the 50 United States. Participants were asked to indicate if any of 70 everyday activities were personal interests or individual abilities, if their youngest children were routinely involved in the activities, and if involved, if their children learned new behavior or skills. Data analysis was guided by a transactional, participation-based paradigm where …
