“Most Damning Of All… I Think I Can Live With It”: Captain Sisko, President Obama, And Emotional Geopolitics, David K. Seitz
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper argues that the proliferation of geographical inquiry into popular culture as a prism for understanding geopolitical processes can benefit from more sustained engagement with psychoanalytic theory, particularly the work of Melanie Klein . Klein’s account of guilt and the urge to make reparation as both central to the development of conscience and profoundly unevenly distributed contributes to a critique of dominant, uneven geographies of guilt and encourages a nuanced approach to guilt’s potential ethical implications . To illustrate, I identify resonances between the contradictory legacy of the Obama administration and the character of Captain Sisko on the television …

Reproduction And In Vitro Technologies Of Swamp Buffalo; Past, Present, And Future, Ruchikon Jongsuwanwattana, Theerawat Swangchan-Uthai, Sudson Sirivaidyapong
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis carabanensis) has long been integral to agriculture and has served as an essential source of food security in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand. Despite their economic and cultural significance, swamp buffaloes have been at risk of declining populations due to low fertility rates. This review provides a comprehensive overview of swamp buffalo reproduction, examining past and present practices, identifying gaps in the literature, and exploring potential future directions for improving reproductive efficiency. This examination inquiries into the reproductive anatomy and physiology of the domestic buffalo, providing a comparative analysis among ruminants. Recent advancements in …
(Dis)Invested Bodies: The Neoliberal Crafting Of Disability, T. Wesley
(Dis)Invested Bodies: The Neoliberal Crafting Of Disability, T. Wesley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as a unifying text, my dissertation explores the relationship between cultural production and the neoliberal crafting of humanity, the term I use to describe how social dimensions—including the construction of the textual and material body—become reorganized and governed through market relations. While many disability scholars and activists frame the ADA’s failures through social misunderstandings of disability, few have seriously attended to the limits of the ADA as a neoliberal fusing of economic governance and classical liberal individualism.
Tracing convergences between the ADA and earlier US disability legislation to socioeconomic and political reforms enacted …
Virtual Cellphilming With Gbtq Pups: Towards Participant-Driven Research As Activism, Kinda Wassef, Olivia Bonardi, Olivier Ferlatte, Megan Aston, Phillip Joy
Virtual Cellphilming With Gbtq Pups: Towards Participant-Driven Research As Activism, Kinda Wassef, Olivia Bonardi, Olivier Ferlatte, Megan Aston, Phillip Joy
The Qualitative Report
In the present paper, we draw upon our research, entitled Puppy Philms, to guide researchers who are interested in queering cellphilming methodologies. In this context, “queering” refers to the process of challenging and disrupting heteronormative roles and perspectives within research practices. We argue that taking a queer poststructural approach to virtual cellphilming helped us shift this project away from typical academic relations of power, towards participant-driven research as activism. In emphasizing flexibility, reflexivity, a desire for partnership and community building, we found queer communication to be a mechanism through which we could shift power and drive levels of engagement. In …
Fostering Awe To Enhance Public Well-Being: Proposed Interventions For A Nature And Science Museum Setting, Zach Calo
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Several scholars consider awe to be a universally experienced emotion that is associated with a variety of well-being outcomes. In the last two decades, research has revealed the many complicated, and often beneficial, effects of this self-transcendent emotion. In this paper, a review of the current theoretical and empirical understanding of awe is first discussed. This review is meant to provide context for the next section and primary aim of this paper, which is to propose a pilot study for implementing and evaluating awe-inducing interventions in a museum setting. The primary research question of this proposed pilot study is to …
Subcultural Textuality: Skateboarding And The Politics Of Subcultural Media, Simon Vangel
Subcultural Textuality: Skateboarding And The Politics Of Subcultural Media, Simon Vangel
Dissertations - ALL
Subcultural Textuality: Skateboarding and the Politics of Subcultural Media analyzes skateboarding media from the mid-1970s to the present, tracing how different textual strategies, material media formats, and discourses have formed shifting understandings of skateboarding’s potential meanings as well as what identity positions are presented as “authentic” within the subculture. Skateboard media rely on what I term a subcultural textuality, a set of narratives and aesthetics which, by engaging with material media form, distribution processes, and historically specific understandings of both genre and mode, present engagement with the text as a subcultural act in and of itself. As a result, such …
The Shaping Of Masculinity In Jamaica: A Historical Perspective, Jovanne Josephine O'Connor
The Shaping Of Masculinity In Jamaica: A Historical Perspective, Jovanne Josephine O'Connor
Theses - ALL
ABSTRACT Jamaica, strategically located in the Western Caribbean, has historically been a coveted prize for European colonial powers due to its geopolitical positioning and reliance on tourism and agriculture (The World Factbook 2023, pg. 23). This research delves into the complex dynamics of masculinity in Jamaica, exploring how historical, cultural, and socioeconomic factors intersect to shape gender identities and behaviors. The colonial history of Jamaica, transitioning from Spanish to English rule, has left indelible marks on its culture, including language and social hierarchies. The evolution of Jamaican Patois reflects a history of linguistic and cultural exchange, serving as a marker …
Pulling Up The Tangled Roots Of Rural Nostalgia: A Rhetorical Study Of Story And Space, Nature And Nation, Emily Pifer
Pulling Up The Tangled Roots Of Rural Nostalgia: A Rhetorical Study Of Story And Space, Nature And Nation, Emily Pifer
Dissertations - ALL
Drawing from queer and feminist methodologies, Pulling Up the Tangled Roots of Rural Nostalgia engages rhetorical analysis of popular culture texts, specifically the film The Power of the Dog (2021) and television shows Schitt’s Creek (2015-2020) and Reservation Dogs (2021- ), and material spaces, specifically Yellowstone National Park, to develop a framework for tracing how particular constructions of rural nostalgia (such as “the small town,” “the frontier,” “the cowboy,” “the Indian Other,” “the wilderness”) circulate back and forth across widely consumed digital texts, collective imaginaries, political structures, and material spaces. As my dissertation pulls up and examines the tangled roots …

Voices Of Partnerships Within The Critical Service-Learning Framework, Kiesha Warren-Gordon, Ken Hudson, Frank Scott
Voices Of Partnerships Within The Critical Service-Learning Framework, Kiesha Warren-Gordon, Ken Hudson, Frank Scott
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Over the course of the past three decades, service learning has become a major component in higher education. Heretofore, however, there has been limited published research that focuses on the community partner or that assesses the role of the community partner within the community-servicelearning (CSL) model. This paper fills that gap by focusing on the community partner relationship as delineated by Mitchell (2008), the community partner’s position in CSL, and the authentic relationships between the community partner, class, and instructor. Specifically, we address the following question: How do community partners articulate their voices within the CSL framework? This paper argues …
When “Doing With” Can Be Without: Employing Critical Service-Learning Strategies In Creating The “New Orleans Black Worker Organizing History” Digital Timeline, Sarah Fouts
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Analyzing the development of the “New Orleans Black Worker Organizing History” digital humanities timeline, this case study addresses the inevitability of transient partnerships between students and community members, while pushing back on the notion of “authentic relationships” in service learning. Embracing the ephemerality of service-learning projects, I focus more on intentional strategies that can lead to transformative learning experiences and help to create a more even playing field in knowledge production. I link critical service learning with feminist pedagogy to offer collaborative strategies that better leverage resources to bridge campus and community.
Subversive Service Learning: Shifting The Locus Of The Problem, Neriko Musha Doerr
Subversive Service Learning: Shifting The Locus Of The Problem, Neriko Musha Doerr
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
This article introduces subversive service learning, a new type of critical service learning that shifts the locus of the “problem” from the marginalized group to the mainstream society, subverting both mainstream perspectives and the deficit model of a community being “helped.” Inspired by Whiteness studies, it pursues social change through service learning. This article illustrates how this subversive service learning works in three cases from the author’s college 200-level class in Fall 2016.
Principal Agency 50 Years After The Lau Decision: Building And Sustaining Bilingual Education Programs For Asian Languages, Kevin M. Wong, Zhongfeng Tian
Principal Agency 50 Years After The Lau Decision: Building And Sustaining Bilingual Education Programs For Asian Languages, Kevin M. Wong, Zhongfeng Tian
Education Division Scholarship
This study examined how three champion principals of Asian language dual language bilingual education (DLBE) programs—Cantonese, Korean, and Mandarin—in California have navigated the oscillating language-in-education policies after the Lau decision. We explored principals' various roles through a lens of agency in a social justice leadership framework, specifically considering the opportunities and challenges for agentive leadership from three different phases: foregrounding and engaging, planning and implementing, and evaluating and sustaining. Findings demonstrate that the success of DLBE programs goes beyond the overarching language policies that supposedly enable bilingual education; rather it hinges on the bottom-up commitment, collaboration and resilience of principals, …

Social Experiences, Life Satisfaction, And Social Support Of Immigrant Families With Young Children In A Highly Urban City, Zeynep Isik-Ercan, Huan-Tang Lu, Nicole Edwards, Madji Fall, Latifa Sebti
College of Education Departmental Research
Grounding this study in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological framework, the authors used a survey that includes psychometrically sound measures, to investigate the social experiences of 54 immigrant families with young children and the factors that shape their perceptions of life satisfaction and social support in a highly urban city. Results show persistent challenges related to discrimination and access to resources. Despite these challenges, participants’ overall satisfaction with life was rated high and positively correlated with their comfort with practicing their culture and with their perceived social support. Implications involve the need to design evidence-based policies and programmes that promote immigrant families’ wellbeing.
Obese African American Women’S Perceptions Of Transition From College To Workforce, Alea Lycorish
Obese African American Women’S Perceptions Of Transition From College To Workforce, Alea Lycorish
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The rate of obesity continues to rise among adults in the United States, and African American (AA) women are at greater risk in comparison with any other group. This matter has become an alarming public health crisis. Obese AA women also face a higher risk of discrimination in the workforce. The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study was to increase the understanding of the perceptions and experiences of bachelor degree educated, overweight AA women during the postgraduate phase, who entered the workforce within the past 10 years. The theoretical framework used in this study was Crenshaw’s intersectionality theory. The …

Rural–Urban Migration, The Commodification Of Labour And Welfare Restructuring In China And Vietnam, Minh T. N. Nguyen, Jake Lin
Political Science Faculty Publications
Since both countries shifted from state to market socialism, China and Vietnam have been pursuing a development model that depends on the labour of millions of rural-urban migrants working in global factories. This chapter conceptualizes the rural-urban migration and the provision of welfare for the migrant labour force as integral to a cycle of commodification that encompasses the overlapping processes of commodification, de-commodification, and re-commodification of labour. After decades of collectivized labour under state socialism, the cycle begins with the commodification of labour through market reforms that led to mass rural-urban migration and the rise of the global factory alongside …

Focusing on fully or in-part anime based fandoms in the Archive of Our Own (AO3) data in the GOLEM knowledge graph we connected 534 fandoms with 1,734 anime works from the JVMG knowledge graph. The fanfiction publication numbers and dates for these fandoms were then analyzed in conjunction with the various metadata available on the corresponding anime works, such as release date, genre, content rating …
Archiving The Ephemeral In Digital Public Space: Using Speculative Design To Consider Collaborative Fan Play In The Metaverse, Naomi Jacobs
Archiving The Ephemeral In Digital Public Space: Using Speculative Design To Consider Collaborative Fan Play In The Metaverse, Naomi Jacobs
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Looking at fan activity through the lens of play, this paper considers the archiving opportunities and challenges posed by new technology for playful ephemeral fan co-creation in multiplatform digital contexts. These include technical concerns such as platform fragility and how to capture inherent liveness and temporality, but also ethical concerns such as sustainability, consent and content moderation.
To examine this, the paper takes fan-created alternate reality games (ARGs) as a particular example of such archiving challenges. It first describes a real example of such a game, ‘Blow the Man Down’ before introducing speculative design as a method to consider a …

A Matter Of Life And Death: The Conceptualization And Theological Significance Of Blood In The Pentateuch, Jared Greer
A Matter Of Life And Death: The Conceptualization And Theological Significance Of Blood In The Pentateuch, Jared Greer
Master's Theses
This 2024 Master of Theological Studies thesis at Lipscomb University analyzes the conceptualization and theological significance of blood within the Pentateuch. While the thesis does attend to various anthropological concerns (i.e., the sociocultural understandings of blood that inform the text), it is more chiefly concerned with how such understandings of blood contribute to the broader theology of the Pentateuch. Using a canonical interpretive approach that respects both the diachronic nature of the text and the theological unity intended by its final redactors, the thesis primarily explores the two principal contexts in which blood appears in the Pentateuch: Israel’s cultus and …
Reflections Of Chinese Opera In Contemporary Chinese Piano Repertoire: A Cutural, Analytical, And Pedagogical Guide, Mengyu Song
Reflections Of Chinese Opera In Contemporary Chinese Piano Repertoire: A Cutural, Analytical, And Pedagogical Guide, Mengyu Song
Theses and Dissertations
Over 5,000 years, Chinese opera has been inspired by many imperial dynasties, regions, and ethnic cultures, making it a unique reflection of Chinese culture. Chinese composers have incorporated traditional Chinese opera in piano compositions to express cultural identity and artistic significance. This music has a broad and profound cultural significance, fostering cultural interchange and understanding and presenting a diverse and inclusive musical experience for non-Chinese students and musicians.
This research study provides a comprehensive overview of Chinese traditional operas, vocal technique and instrumentation, the development of piano music in China, and corresponding piano literature in progressive difficulty for early-intermediate to …

Children Sustain Cooperation In A Threshold Public-Goods Game Even When Seeing Others’ Outcomes, Patricia Kanngiesser, Jahnavi Sunderarajan, Sebastian Hafenbrädl, Jan K. Woike
School of Psychology
Many societal challenges are threshold dilemmas requiring people to cooperate to reach a threshold before group benefits can be reaped. Yet receiving feedback about others’ outcomes relative to one’s own (relative feedback) can undermine cooperation by focusing group members’ attention on outperforming each other. We investigated the impact of relative feedback compared to individual feedback (only seeing one’s own outcome) on cooperation in children from Germany and India (6- to 10-year-olds, N = 240). Using a threshold public-goods game with real water as a resource, we show that, although feedback had an effect, most groups sustained cooperation at high levels …

World In Crises: Towards Qualitative Interviewing Through Existential Questions, Sona Balasanyan, Hasmik Gevorgyan
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative interviewing is a widely applied method of data collection in social sciences. Over time, continual diversification of this method led to more multi-modal and participant-centered qualitative research paradigms. This methodological article examines the role of qualitative interviews within the context of the psychosocial approach and its application in understanding interview experiences in critical life situations. Accounting for research ethics and embracing existential questions, qualitative interviewing gains added value in understanding and responding to interviewees who face crises. Drawing on various methodological approaches, including oral history, biographical, feminist, phenomenological, and cross-cultural, this study explores how interviewing evolves into a complex …
