Homelessness And Sofa-Surfing: Everyday Belonging, Mobilities, Identities And Morals In Hidden Spaces Of Welfare, Kieran Green, Mark Holton, Richard Yarwood
Homelessness And Sofa-Surfing: Everyday Belonging, Mobilities, Identities And Morals In Hidden Spaces Of Welfare, Kieran Green, Mark Holton, Richard Yarwood
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This paper advances existing work on the geographies of homelessness by considering the phenomenon of sofa-surfing—defined as the practice of living in a host's home, without a right to reside, in the absence of more permanent accommodation—as a distinctive, and until recently somewhat hidden, form of homelessness. Examining sofa-surfing is important as it recognises the varied and intersecting spatial, temporal and mobility characteristics of vulnerable populations, often thought to be living at the margins of homelessness. Across the globe, the significant increase in sofa-surfing since the 2010s, coupled with the unique, and frequently hidden, movements between ‘host’ homes, and the …

Sedimentary nitrogen isotopic ratios are used as a proxy for ancient biogeochemical cycles on Earth's surface. It is generally accepted that sediment hole tops record primary signatures because organic nitrogen (ON) is predominant in this part of the hole. In contrast to such early to middle diagenetic stages, it is well known that heavier nitrogen isotope 15N tends to enrich in sedimentary rocks during later diagenetic and metamorphic stages. However, there are some critical gaps in our understanding of nitrogen isotopic alteration associated with abiotic processes during early-middle diagenesis. In this study, we examined the isotope ratios of ammonium nitrogen …

Are Young Miko, Villano Antillano, And Tokischa Reflecting Their Queer Caribbean Latina Identity In Their Sociophonetics? A Study Of Their Spontaneous Speech And Their Artistic Performance Speech, Elizabeth Naranjo Hayes, Kyra Ray
2024 Hispanic Linguistics Symposium
American consumption of Latin Music is at an all-time high (Billboard Charts, 2024; YouTube Music Charts, n.d.), and its popularity in the U.S. has allowed young, queer Caribbean Latina artists like Young Miko, Villano Antillano, and Tokischa to become more well known. These artists' large platforms mean that their speech has the potential of influencing the speech of their listeners, both Spanish speakers and learners. But what is that speech?
The goal of the study is to determine whether Young Miko, Villano Antillano, and Tokischa reflect their queer Caribbean Latina identity in their sociophonetics, both in their spontaneous speech and …

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State
Ossabaw Island is a Georgia barrier island, accessible solely by boat and protected from development through a public-private partnership between a foundation and the state. This site has the potential to serve as a primary resource for inspiration, education, and lifelong learning. Our study illuminates how one pre-service teacher (PST) and six teacher educators (TEs) experienced an immersive site visit to this local learning environment. We highlight the importance of experiencing places first-hand and using sources (e.g., oral histories) to make content connections. Additionally, the immersive site visit experience allowed us to collaboratively brainstorm place-based curricular units.

The Legacy Of Oscarville: Using Critical Participatory Action Research And Learning Teaching As An Interpretive Process To Sustain A Placeless Place, Leah Panther, Kristie Smith, Mary Mitchelson, Robert Bonner Jr.
Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State
The history of Oscarville, Georgia, nestled within the Lake Lanier region of North Georgia, remains both known and unknown, existing as a significant yet elusive part of local lore and historical retellings. This article delves into the innovative approach of a place-based critical participatory action research program, "Historicizing Oscarville," which engaged teacher candidates and educators in exploring the obscured history of Oscarville. The narrative uncovers the complex layers of settler colonialism, slavery, racial cleansing, and subsequent erasure that characterize Oscarville's past. By employing the framework of Learning Teaching as an Interpretive Process (LTIP) within a place-based education model, the project …

Language Identity And Ownership Through Code-Switching Among Bilingual Maya-Spanish Undergraduate Students At An Intercultural-Bilingual-Education Bachelor’S Program, Felipe Acosta-Munoz
2024 Hispanic Linguistics Symposium
Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) is a paramount advancement for the cultural and linguistic rights for indigenous peoples across Latin America, including Mexico. Nonetheless, in this country, IBE in higher education has faced arduous challenges in its implementation. The minoritization of indigenous languages (ILs) in the educational model for intercultural universities and programs makes IBE a contested educational battlefield throughout Mexico regarding the relevance of ILs. This paper explains the sociolinguistic negotiation processes among Maya-Spanish bilingual students at the Maya Linguistics and Culture (MLC) program at the Universidad de Oriente. These negotiations provide the necessary data to understand students’ language ideologies …

Teachers’ Experiences Of Applying Transcaring Strategies With Secondary English Language Learners In Online Spaces, Rosa Haydee Addis
Teachers’ Experiences Of Applying Transcaring Strategies With Secondary English Language Learners In Online Spaces, Rosa Haydee Addis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
English language learners (ELLs) have struggled with learning a new language and content online within the U.S. school system. The research problem on which this study was based was that because ELLs have unique cultural and linguistic challenges while learning online, a better understanding of teachers’ experiences of how transcaring strategies are applied in online learning spaces for secondary ELLs was needed. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore teachers’ experiences of applying transcaring strategies with secondary ELLs in online spaces. Garrison’s community of inquiry was the conceptual framework, in which the research question related to the …
An Exploration Into The Social And Emotional Effects Of K-12 Music Education, Jerrod T. Perry
An Exploration Into The Social And Emotional Effects Of K-12 Music Education, Jerrod T. Perry
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In music education, a student must learn to read music notation, develop eye-hand-mind coordination, develop keen listening skills, develop team skills for playing in an ensemble, and develop the discipline to practice. Several research findings show that musical training is a powerful intervention that could help students emotionally and intellectually mature. This research aims to connect the current research on music education with the lack of exploration and knowledge to find the correlation between music and students’ academic success. The methodology used for this study will be a quantitative historical study format directed to discover research-backed evidence based on this …
Searching For The Path To A More Perfect Union. A Book Review Of Educating For Democracy, Tiffany Berman, Aaron Mccullough, Rabih Murr, David Adams
Searching For The Path To A More Perfect Union. A Book Review Of Educating For Democracy, Tiffany Berman, Aaron Mccullough, Rabih Murr, David Adams
Democracy & Education
Educating for Democracy presents Walter Feinberg’s vision for the democratic aims of education. Feinberg argues that the evolutionary nature of democracy should be met with a citizenry capable of critical reflection. Education for democracy, then, entails the development of cognitive and affective habits that underpin this critical reflexivity. However, Educating for Democracy asserts that such education should be embedded across curricular areas and not limited solely to civics education. In this review of Educating for Democracy, we begin by providing a broad overview of Feinberg’s foundational arguments presented in the opening chapters. Next, we identify specific themes developed in these …

Un/Learning To Disagree. A Response To "Pragmatist Thinking For A Populist Moment: Contingency And Racial Re-Valuing In Education Governance", Edda Sant, Marta Da Costa
Democracy & Education
How should education governance respond to increasing polarized perspectives? Drawing on contemporary African American pragmatism, Knight-Abowitz and Sellers’s article "Pragmatist Thinking for a Populist Moment: Contingency and Racial Re-valuing in Education Governance" interrogated the critical case of Black Lives Matters and anti-critical race theory protests in the USA education governance and concluded that inquiry and deliberation are needed to embrace more pluralistic forms of democracy. In our response, in which we engage with decolonial, agonistic, and speculative theories, we share Knight-Abowitz and Sellers’s analytical framings. Yet we wonder to what extent inquiry and deliberation can push off racial habits and …
A Reimagining Of Popular Music Interpretation Through Barthes’S Third Meaning: Implications For General Music Teacher Education, Kexin Xu
Visions of Research in Music Education
Popular music is valuable in music teacher education because it can allow the considering of divergent and unique perspectives. However, viewing popular music making as a static process can constrain its values. Drawing on the work of Roland Barthes (1977), the purpose of this philosophical inquiry is to examine the limitations of current ways of interpreting popular music and to reimagine popular music interpretation in general music teacher education. After providing an overview of Barthes’s (1977) three levels of meaning—the information level of meaning, the symbolic level of meaning, and the third meaning—I problematize popular music interpretation at the first …

Considering Participant Observation Methods For Nursing Qualitative Research, Ana Inês Lourenço Da Costa, Maria Da Luz Jansénio Monteiro De Almeida Fonseca Rosa, Paula Manuela Jorge Dioga
The Qualitative Report
Observation is used as a research technique and the selection of the appropriate type depends on the research question and the paradigm underlying each study. The degree of participation and involvement of a nurse researcher varies according to the nature of the setting and the research question. The objective is to reflect on the experience in applying observational techniques in nursing qualitative research. We report on the experience of using 14 observations of interactions between nurse-child-parents in a nursing appointment in a healthcare center. This data collection allowed identification of advantages and limitations in the nurse-child-parent interaction processes, in a …

Introducing The Transcendent Media Experience Model (Tmem), Sophie H. Janicke-Bowles
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
Eudaimonic media experiences are vast. A comprehensive theoretical model of inward- and outward-focused eudaimonic media outcomes, that can explain how they come about and how they can be discriminated, is still missing. The current manuscript introduces the Transcendent Media Experiences Model (TMEM) to categorize eudaimonic content and experiences as they pertain to healthy self-focus or outward-focused (transcendent) responses and outcomes using self-construal theory as a backbone. This model allows for a more cohesive understanding of when, how, and for whom inward- or outward focused eudaimonic media experiences develop and the mechanisms for why they do so. As such, the model …
Interleukin-1 Receptor-Associated Kinase 1 In Cancer Metastasis And Therapeutic Resistance: Mechanistic Insights And Translational Advances, Hui-Wen Lo
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Interleukin-1 Receptor Associated Kinase 1 (IRAK1) is a serine/threonine kinase that plays a critical role as a signaling transducer of the activated Toll-like receptor (TLR)/Interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R) signaling pathway in both immune cells and cancer cells. Upon hyperphosphorylation by IRAK4, IRAK1 forms a complex with TRAF6, which results in the eventual activation of the NF-κB and MAPK pathways. IRAK1 can translocate to the nucleus where it phosphorylates STAT3 transcription factor, leading to enhanced IL-10 gene expression. In immune cells, activated IRAK1 coordinates innate immunity against pathogens and mediates inflammatory responses. In cancer cells, IRAK1 is frequently activated, and the activation …

Sacred Recitation Of The Tibetan Yungdrung Bön Tradition: The Kharnatsang Collection Of Skad And The Arrangement Of The Three Heart Mantras, Christiane Strothmann
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
The digital age has long dawned in many of the Tibetan Monasteries in exile. Thus, the inclusion of internet platforms and the usage of digital communication technologies was naturally part of my ethnomusicological collaboration with the Tibetan Bön monastic chant leader and scholar Geshé Dawa Namgyal Kharnatsang on the sacred recitation of the Yungdrung Bön tradition of Menri Monastery in Dolanji, India. In this article I will offer insights into Kharnatsang’s and my motivation to develop a hybrid collaboration and discuss the role and impact of the digital technologies on the traditional chain of transmission. I will draw on two …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
Through a first-person perspective, we travel along to Costa Rica with LMU’s First To Go students. Utilizing a long format, home video style, the goal is to communicate the authentic experiences that occurred during the trip. It’s one thing to be a young adult getting the chance to explore new parts of the world, but it’s a different privilege to get to do it with others that you can connect with. So much so that in the couple months preceding the trip, I found myself dealing with that post-trip depression. However, in that state, I found the beauty of being …

I never thought that when I would start traveling internationally that it would be alone I always imagined it with my family, but never did I imagine traveling to really interact with the communities either I always thought of traveling as leisure. I guess I could say this impression was not implemented when OI started traveling as I started to notice how I didn’t want to do touristy things and I really just wanted to be. To be there to be present to be aware and I think that is what I enjoyed the most about my trip to Costa …
