The Role Of Cooperative Extension In Community Development: A Study Of Success Stories And Leadership Practices, George Grant Jan 2025

The Role Of Cooperative Extension In Community Development: A Study Of Success Stories And Leadership Practices, George Grant

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

The Cooperative Extension System (CES) plays a vital role in community education and development across the United States. CES agents and specialists work directly with community members to identify needs, mobilize existing assets, and empower action. Despite the overlap in the fields of CES and community development, few studies have systematically analyzed the specific practices used by extension personnel who act as facilitators of change within communities. To address this gap in knowledge, a qualitative study was conducted using directed content analysis of CES success stories published through the University of Kentucky to identify practices used among two integral positions …

Black Women, Bold Science: Navigating Race, Gender, And Identity In Science, Mia L. Brown

Theses and Dissertations--Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education

This research study examines the challenges Black women encounter when in predominantly white, male academic and professional science settings, where they experience dual discrimination because of their race and gender. These biases perpetuate the negative stereotype that Black women are less competent than white men. This mixed methods study examines how Black women navigate their race, gender, and science identities within predominantly white institutions through their doctoral programs and professional science careers. The study implements Critical Race Mixed Methodology to combine survey data for a wide reach with interview data for detailed exploration. The study involved eight Black women science …

Project Portfolio: Connecting Through Conflict, Jennifer Vernam Jan 2025

Project Portfolio: Connecting Through Conflict, Jennifer Vernam

Doctor of Leadership

The Connecting Through Conflict project was designed to respond to the following NPO statement: “Christians are prioritizing their ideologies above core tenants, which is challenging their Christ-centered freedoms and presenting barriers to living in community.” Using a collaborative design model for discovery with various stakeholder groups, it was identified that Christian leaders do not have strategies for managing ideological conflict in their communities. This deficit, in turn led to conflicts to being avoided, driving those with minority views to perceive themselves as outsiders to their communities of faith. The resulting product was designed to empower Christian leaders to normalize the …

Evaluating Online Resources: Providing Parents With Reliable Emotional Intelligence Training Tools, Melissa Van Embden

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The rise of online resources has produced a shift in how parents seek guidance in fostering their child’s emotional intelligence (EI). Yet, the quality and accessibility of these resources remain largely unexamined. This study evaluates the top Google search results generated from six prompts designed to reflect the information-seeking behavior of parents looking to develop their child’s EI. Using an incognito browser, the first 20 links for each prompt were recorded, with Google Gemini AI-generated responses specifically marked. The researcher vetted the recorded links by utilizing a comprehensive checklist assessing professional credibility, communication and engagement features, and pricing. The Findings …

Anxiety And Self-Esteem In Adolescents And Young Adults Undergoing Bariatric Surgery, Julia Nikolajuk Jan 2025

Anxiety And Self-Esteem In Adolescents And Young Adults Undergoing Bariatric Surgery, Julia Nikolajuk

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Bariatric surgery, a medical procedure that alters an individual’s digestive system, has gained popularity in the last several years as a weight loss method. After this surgery, many individuals report improvements with their quality of life as they lose weight, change unhealthy eating patterns, experience a decrease in symptoms of depression, and gain a strong sense of self-esteem. However, research has found increased rates of depressive symptoms and patterns of disordered eating associated with obesity and bariatric surgery, but little research exists regarding anxiety and bariatric surgery with adolescents and young adults. The purpose of this study was to clarify …

Acculturation, Self-Esteem, Family Norms, And Disordered Eating Behaviors In South Asian Women, Angela Abraham Jan 2025

Acculturation, Self-Esteem, Family Norms, And Disordered Eating Behaviors In South Asian Women, Angela Abraham

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This study investigated the relationships among acculturation, self-esteem, family norms, and disordered eating behaviors among South Asian women living in the United States. Although research suggests culture plays a role in the etiology of eating disorders, little information on the experiences of South Asian women exists. This study sought to fill this gap in the literature. Using a cross-sectional, quantitative survey-based design, 151 South Asian women provided insight into their experiences with family norms, acculturation, self-esteem, and eating behaviors. Results indicated that acculturation was not significantly associated with disordered eating. However, self-esteem was found to be negatively associated with disordered …

Girl Gamers, Online Community, And Social Identity Theory: The Role Of Positive Distinction Strategies On Group Engagement On R/Girlgamers, Rachael Green

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Identity theorists have studied the complex relationship between gender and gaming for over two decades, but research on how women persist in gaming communities despite harassment remains underdeveloped. Grounded in Social Identity Theory, this dissertation examines the subreddit r/GirlGamers to evaluate the prevalence and impact of positive distinction strategies in countering identity threats. Based on a mixed-methods approach, the findings highlight three key strategies (group permeability, social creativity, and social competition) alongside themes of emotion, structural inequality, and interpersonal violence. Statistical tests indicate that posts employing at least one positive distinction strategy receive significantly more upvotes and comments than those …

Searching For The "Tender Places": Shoddy, Knowledge, And Material Culture In The Civil War Era, Robert William Novak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the American Civil War era, shoddy was difficult to understand. It was simultaneously seen as evidence of advancing western civilization as well as a disgusting amalgamation of refuse and disease that threatened those who touched it. Made from shredding woolen rags and tailors’ clippings, the recycled woolen fibers could by applied in myriad woolen blends that came to dominate the ready-made clothing industry that developed through the first half of the nineteenth century. Its application could soften coarse blends and refine the appearance of cheap cloth. When the American Civil War erupted in 1861, however, shoddy came to define …

Celebrity Trademark Overload: The Rising Issue Of Excessive Registrations And Reverse Confusion, Lola-Marie Pyros Jan 2025

Celebrity Trademark Overload: The Rising Issue Of Excessive Registrations And Reverse Confusion, Lola-Marie Pyros

Touro Law Review

Celebrities use trademark law not only to protect their brands, but also to stake claims on a vast range of potential marks through intent to use (“ITU”) applications—often before any real commercial plan exists. This practice allows celebrities to reserve rights ranging from viral catchphrases to their children’s names which crowds the trademark register, delays legitimate filings by smaller businesses, and forces challengers into costly legal battles. A separate but equally troubling issue arises when a celebrity’s brand overshadows a preexisting weaker mark. In “reverse confusion” cases, courts often focus on whether the celebrity acted willfully, ignoring the fact that …

Property Value(S): Race, Class, And Political Economy In Narratives Of The Single-Family House And Lot, Scott A. Degregoris

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation establishes the single-family house and lot as a political economy of its own. This project maps a political economy of race and class by focusing on both literary representations of the single-family house and lot and this space and structure’s historical, geographical, and architectural significance in and around the city of Detroit. Focusing on Sinclair Lewis’ Main Street (1920) and Babbitt (1922), John Updike’s Rabbit Redux (1971), Amy Haimerl’s Detroit Hustle: A Memoir of Love, Life & Home (2016), and Angela Flournoy’s The Turner House (2015) this analysis illuminates the values that underly and permeate this space and …

Examining The Association Between Perceived Stigma And Mental Health Help-Seeking Behavior Among Racial/Ethnic Minority Students In Health Professions Education, Camila A. Agurto Jan 2025

Examining The Association Between Perceived Stigma And Mental Health Help-Seeking Behavior Among Racial/Ethnic Minority Students In Health Professions Education, Camila A. Agurto

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Racial and ethnic minority (REM) students in health professions programs in the U.S. have considerable mental health issues. Still, they are less likely to access mental health services when compared to their White peers. The stigma they face, such as —public stigma, self-stigma, or intersectional stigma, may serve as a barrier to help-seeking. Although there is increasing recognition of the barriers to mental health care experienced by these students, there is no systematic understanding of how perceived stigma associated with mental health issues affects mental health help-seeking by REM students enrolled in health professions education. This systematic literature review aims …

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis focuses on Rawls’ neglect of disabled people in A Theory of Justice. Rawls claims that disabled people are too complicated for this theory and thus depriving them of their equality. This thesis looks at how other scholars have approached Rawls’ claim. This is meant for advanced undergraduates and new graduate students in political science, political theory/philosophy, and philosophy, who are likely being first introduced to Rawls or have never heard of him before. These students are the future of our society, and they will make a change in the future. This thesis serves to educate them on Rawls’ …

Optimising Student Recruitment And Brand Awareness At Icot College Through Culturally Targeted Advertising And Social Media Strategies., Uchral Ganbold

Business ETD Collections

In today’s competitive higher education landscape, institutions increasingly rely on digital marketing strategies to attract and retain international students. ICOT College, an English Language Training provider in Ireland, faces challenges in recruiting and engaging a diverse international student base due to limited culturally tailored advertising and underutilisation of social media platforms. The global education sector has become more competitive following COVID-19, with students adopting more selective and research-driven approaches when choosing institutions. However, ICOT’s current marketing approach remains largely generic, lacking localisation, targeted messaging, and interactive digital engagement. This reduces its effectiveness in connecting with key international markets and weakens …

History’S Movement: The Historical Ontology In Social Ontology, Bennett B. Gilbert Jan 2025

History’S Movement: The Historical Ontology In Social Ontology, Bennett B. Gilbert

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Social ontology and the philosophy of history both concern themselves with human collectives. Social ontology is supposed to be theoretical, although the social sciences are supposed to be empirical. Philosophy of history is supposed to be theoretical, although historiography is supposed to be empirical. In fact, the a priori and the a posteriori mix in both theoretical and empirical endeavors in similar ways. Since the two endeavors hold part of their objects of inquiry in common, they should be able to speak to another. In what follows I aim to expose some of the ways their dialogue stresses and can …

Medieval Misinformation And Disinformation: Filling A Gap In Medieval Studies, Kristin B. Leaman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Misinformation and disinformation are well-known terms that bring a plethora of topics to mind, such as fake news, conspiracy theories, social media, economic inequity, power imbalances, social justice, confirmation bias, political polarization, and/or health information within a more modern/contemporary context. While it is no secret that mis/disinformation have been present in our societies for centuries, it is not an area that has been fully examined in Medieval Studies. This article argues that the lack of scholarship on medieval mis/disinformation stems from a gap in the medieval studies curriculum and provides solutions to this problem, including a brief outline of a …

Racial Minorities In Strategic Leadership: An Integrative Literature Review And Future Research Roadmap, Yangyang Zhang, Ann Mooney, Sibel Ozgen

Management Faculty Works

Bolstered by their slow but increasing representation, racial minority strategic leaders have started to capture significant research attention across disciplines. We review this emergent literature, synthesizing and integrating the research progress to date across the 147 articles we identified. Our review highlights a range of factors that have been found to influence racial minority representation in strategic leadership positions, including factors at the firm, board, individual, and environmental levels. We also summarize how such representation has been found to affect firm outcomes (e.g., firm performance, innovation) as well as the careers of the racial minority leaders (e.g., compensation, promotion). Despite …

Religiosity And The Gender Violence Crisis: How Religious Affiliation Of Society Impacts Violence Against Women, Sydney Hoffman Jan 2025

Religiosity And The Gender Violence Crisis: How Religious Affiliation Of Society Impacts Violence Against Women, Sydney Hoffman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the impact that the religious affiliation of a population has on both the prevalence of violence against women, as well as the presence of legislation and other legal frameworks aimed at preventing violence and protecting women. Utilizing data from international organizations and nonpartisan fact tanks, regression analyses are performed with four different models and dependent variables to understand the effect religiosity has on both prevalence and prevention of gender violence. While the results of these models do not indicate a likelihood of real relationships between religiosity and the different outcomes, the thesis overall contributes further to the …

Exploring The Stem Career Identity Development Of Black Women Across Their Lifespan, Veronica Hurd Jan 2025

Exploring The Stem Career Identity Development Of Black Women Across Their Lifespan, Veronica Hurd

Theses and Dissertations

Although STEM is the fastest-growing career sector, Black women are grossly underrepresented as they account for 2.5% of the workforce. Research highlights that this underrepresentation is due to racialized structures in K-12, postsecondary, and career settings that restrict Black girls’ and women’s STEM opportunities. While macrosystems such as hegemonic ideologies, attitudes, and social conditions shape Black girls’ and women’s opportunities in STEM, they continue to persist and achieve their career goals. To explore these barriers and Black women’s persistence in this industry, this study draws from the autobiographical memories of 10 Black women in the field or formerly in the …

Skin And Bones: Transgenerational Trauma, Experimental Storytelling, And The Texture Of Hope, A Creative Dissertation, Janine Blue

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation theorizes and enacts experimental storytelling as a method for engaging transgenerational trauma, highlighting how form shapes the ways histories are remembered, embodied, and reimagined across generations. Grounded in hope rehearsal as both a theoretical and creative framework, this project examines how BIPOC writers use experimental writing techniques to navigate the afterlives of historical trauma and reclaim storytelling as an act of meaning-making, communal care, and futurity. The dissertation begins with a critical chapter that explores these experimental techniques as strategies for recovery and resistance. The dissertations’ creative chapter, Andre Lyle: Skin and Bones, expands on these ideas …
