Where Do We Go From Here? Culturally Responsive Teaching And Literacy Among African American Males, Denise Evelyn Cyrus
Where Do We Go From Here? Culturally Responsive Teaching And Literacy Among African American Males, Denise Evelyn Cyrus
Education Dissertations and Projects
Literacy skills impact academic achievement for school-aged children and almost every facet of modern day life thereafter. Low literacy achievement affects college acceptance, college completion, employment, housing, and socioeconomic status to name a few (Ford & Moore, 2013). Regrettably, the literacy skills gap between Black and White students in America has remained virtually the same for the past 20 years. Factors such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, and teacher quality contribute to the sustainability of literacy gaps. Scholars such as Ladson-Billings (1995a), Gay (2010), and Hammond (2015) endorse the use of culturally responsive pedagogy as an approach to reduce achievement …

Mechanical Trenching Cultural Resources Survey: Proposed Emergency Bridge Repair At Peek Road Bridge City Of Katy, Fort Bend County, Texas, Catherine L. Jalbert, Michael Hogan
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Terracon Consultants, Inc. (Terracon) was retained by CivilTech Engineering, Inc. (Client) to conduct a mechanical trenching survey along the embankment slopes of Buffalo Bayou at Peek Road, the location of proposed emergency bridge repair in Katy, Fort Bend County, Texas. Since the proposed undertaking will occur on land owned or controlled by a political subdivision of the State of Texas, and because funding for this project will come, in part, from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) this project required compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA; Title 44, Part 10 CFR) and was subject to the Antiquities Code …

Student Led Area Measurement Assessments Using Virtual Globes And Pictometry Web-Based Interface Within An Undergraduate Spatial Science Curriculum, David Kulhavy, I-Kuai Hung, Daniel Unger, Yanli Zhang
Faculty Publications
The use of Virtual Globes and Pictometry continues to expand and develop in undergraduate spatial science education. Spatial science undergraduates measured the area of 30 rectangles on the earth’s surface and compared them to Pictometry hyperspectral imagery measurements within a web-based interface and the Google Earth interface compared to ArcGIS Explorer, Map Developers and ArcMap using the ArcMap 10.5.2 interface. An analysis of variance of the absolute mean area errors (p-value of 0.009271) concluded the accuracy of the five area measurements were statistically different at the 95% confidence interval. A Tukey pair-wise test found that the Pictometry and Google Earth …
Urea Uptake And Urease Activity In The Chesapeake Bay, Caroline M. Solomon
Urea Uptake And Urease Activity In The Chesapeake Bay, Caroline M. Solomon
Journal of Marine Research
The importance of urea in supplying the nitrogen (N) required by planktonic communities has long been recognized, notably by James J. McCarthy in studies as early as the 1970s. Utilization of urea involves a two-step enzymatic process in phytoplankton, with urea first entering the cell via transport (i.e., urea uptake), followed by the conversion of urea into ammonium by the enzyme urease. This article describes a series of field observations and experiments conducted in the Chesapeake Bay, USA, from 2001 through 2018, aimed at understanding the relationship between urea uptake and urease activity and the role of environmental factors on …
Phytoplankton In The Aqueous Ecological Theater: Changing Conditions, Biodiversity, And Evolving Ecological Concepts, Patricia M. Glibert
Phytoplankton In The Aqueous Ecological Theater: Changing Conditions, Biodiversity, And Evolving Ecological Concepts, Patricia M. Glibert
Journal of Marine Research
Phytoplankton communities, from lakes to oceans, are changing with anthropogenic nutrient loading and climate change. So, too, are the tools by which phytoplankton are quantified and characterized, yielding a torrent of new data and new types of data that can be related to ecosystem function. New insights have been gained about the physiology of resource acquisition by phytoplankton, allowing new relationships between phytoplankton biodiversity and function to be developed. Despite years of emphasis on the use of inorganic substrates in support of phytoplankton nutrition, it is now well understood that phytoplankton rely on a broad suite of substrates, both dissolved …

Self-Compassion And Depression Across Culture: Comparisons Of Emerging Adults In China And The United States, Han Na Lee
ETD Archive
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most common mood disorders and affects over 300 million individuals across the world in a given year. MDD is marked by sadness, loss of pleasure or interest, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, fatigue or loss of energy, and poor concentration that leads to functional impairment, which can potentially have a debilitating impact on individual’s educational, occupational, social and psychological areas of life. Not only is depression highly prevalent in the U.S., but it is also a global concern, including countries such as China. Estimates of lifetime prevalence …
Gender Differences In Mate Preferences Among Single Heterosexual Romanians Residing In The United States, Monica A. Naininger
Gender Differences In Mate Preferences Among Single Heterosexual Romanians Residing In The United States, Monica A. Naininger
ETD Archive
This study sought to discover whether single heterosexual mate preference differences between men and women who were born in Romania would have fluctuated as one became more acculturated to American way of life and if these sex differences may have been moderated by other variables such as SES and age. This study was based on the premises of evolutionary, social role and cultural theories, the former which stated that men tended to look for characteristics that signified reproductive value like good looks whereas women sought out men that evidenced characteristics of cultural success like having been financially independent. It was …
Puzzles, Problems And Provention: Burton And Beyond, Terry Beitzel
Puzzles, Problems And Provention: Burton And Beyond, Terry Beitzel
International Journal of Peace Studies
The following provides a brief overview of one of the founders of conflict studies, John Burton, and his Basic Human Needs theory. Since Burton is seldomly cited in contemporary scholarship1 the following relies heavily on the reflections of David Dunn, published in 2004 and on a collection of writings written by Burton’s colleagues in 1990. While a set of questions remain incredibly important — are needs universal, how do they differ from interests and desires, do they exist in a hierarchy of importance, and, what is the relation between needs and culture? — the following concentrates primarily on two features …

Neoliberalism And Contemporary American Literature, Liam Kennedy, Stephen Shapiro
Neoliberalism And Contemporary American Literature, Liam Kennedy, Stephen Shapiro
Dartmouth College Press
How has American literature responded to the dominance of neoliberalism? Does it make sense to speak of an "American" literature in neoliberal times? Can literature function as either a neutral category or a privileged narrative of national imagination in a time when paradigms of the nation-state and of liberal capitalism are undergoing a prolonged shift? In the United States, as elsewhere, the association between the nation-state, liberal capitalism, and literary form has a long history, reflecting determinate relations between writer and reader within imagined national community. As this community loses its symbolic efficiency in the age of neoliberal capital, the …
Measuring The Impact Of Gun Theft On City-Level Gun Crime Rates, Thomas Senst
Measuring The Impact Of Gun Theft On City-Level Gun Crime Rates, Thomas Senst
Master’s Theses and Projects
The history of gun culture in the United States is complicated. Guns are an integral part of American history and attempts to control them through policy are often contentious. However, research suggests that gun crime occurs in areas where there are more guns (Braga, 2017; Braga & Pierce, 2005; Cook, Harris, Ludwig, & Pollack, 2015; Kennedy, 2011; Koper, 2013; Pierce, Braga, Hyatt, & Koper, 2004). Consequently, as gun accessibility increases within cities, the likelihood of gun crime also increases. When researching gun accessibility, it is important to note how guns are accessed. Often, guns are accessible in three ways: (1) …

Preparing Prospective Teachers To Teach Culturally Diverse Populations, Carrie Kondor, Angela Owusu-Ansah, Lynn Keyne-Michaels
CUP Faculty Research
Out of every three students enrolled in either elementary or secondary school in the United States, one is of a racial or ethnic minority, whereas about 87% of the teachers are White and female. The rate of increase in minority K-12 students, who are often also living in poverty, is projected to increase to 41% by the year 2020 (National Center for Education Statistics, 2007). In contrast, those coming into teaching, and those who teach prospective teachers [remain for the most part] White females who have been raised in middle class homes in rural and suburban communities, strengthening the persistence …

Traveling Abroad: Motivations And Factors, Kacie R. Lorenson
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
This study examines motivations, factors and influences for individuals either traveling alone, with others they know, or with a group travel company. The method used was a self-administered survey that had a total of 17 questions. There were 141 individuals who completed the survey. Once the data was gathered a chi-squared test was used to understand if there is a difference in factors to be included in a tour, in motivations desired for individuals traveling and in influences that affected individual’s decisions in traveling. Once the test statistic was performed and analyzed, the study was able to conclude if there …
Stigma, Loss Of Face, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among South Korean College Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Kyujin Yon
Stigma, Loss Of Face, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among South Korean College Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Kyujin Yon
SPU Works
This study investigated empirical associations between others stigma (predictor), self-stigma (mediator), loss of face concerns (moderator), and professional help-seeking attitudes (outcome) among South Korean college students (N = 485). We also explored the dimensionality of close others and public stigmas using bifactor analysis and ancillary measures. Participants were recruited from several universities in South Korea. They completed an online survey containing demographic questions and study measures. Bifactor analysis results indicated that close others and public stigmas may be better treated as a unidimensional measure (i.e., others stigma). Mediation and moderated mediation analyses indicated that others stigma predicted self-stigma, which …

Neglecting Plant–Microbe Symbioses Leads To Underestimation Of Modeled Climate Impacts, Mingjie Shi, Joshua B. Fisher, Richard P. Phillips, Edward R. Brzostek
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The extent to which terrestrial ecosystems slow climate change by sequestering carbon hinges in part on nutrient limitation. We used a coupled carbon–climate model that accounts for the carbon cost to plants of supporting nitrogen-acquiring microbial symbionts to explore how nitrogen limitation affects global climate. To do this, we first calculated the reduction in net primary production due to the carbon cost of nitrogen acquisition. We then used a climate model to estimate the impacts of the resulting increase in atmospheric CO2 on temperature and precipitation regimes. The carbon costs of supporting symbiotic nitrogen uptake reduced net primary production by …

Reading Mythology In Ocean Vuong's Night Sky With Exit Wounds Through Just Memory, Havannah Tran
Honors Thesis Collection
In his debut poetry collection, Night Sky with Exit Wounds, queer Vietnamese-American refugee poet Ocean Vuong claims his work is “an attempt to navigate history through a rewriting or rather, a recasting, of history into a mythology, much in the tradition of our poetic forebears, like Homer, Dante, Milton.” In this myth-making, closely related to memory and the constitution of empire, I read Vuong’s collection through scholar and novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen’s “just memory”, a way of memorialization that seeks to give voice to all people involved in conflict, examines the conditions in which war memory is produced, and …

Managing The Nazi Legacy: Contradictory Reconstruction Policies In Us-Occupied Germany, 1945-1952, Rachel Speyer Besancon
Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis seeks to identify the circumstances in the postwar United States that allowed American foreign policymakers to pursue contradictory denazification programs in occupied Germany. On May 8, 1945, Germany transformed from a sovereign state to an occupied territory. The United States and its Allies were tasked with administering the agreed upon plans for occupation in Germany, predominantly focused on denazification and reconstruction. In the American zone, the Occupying Military Government’s plans for denazification and reconstruction affected segments of the population very differently. While low-ranking public officials were banned from public service due to their ties to the Nazi regime, …

Culture And Language: An Action Research Study On The Impact Of Integrating Culture Into A Chinese Language Immersion Program, Haibin Li
Education Dissertations and Projects
Though a framework for foreign language education exists, the lack of guidelines, proper implementation, and benchmarks, along with scarce research on the effects of implementing cultural aspects in immersion classrooms leaves foreign language educators in the dark. An action research study design was utilized in a second grade Chinese immersion program at a language academy, investigating the impacts of the inclusion of culture activities in the classroom. Areas included were cultural exposure, teaching methods, teaching materials, cross cultural education, and challenges. Research data collected included students’ unit test scores, journals, parent surveys, and parent interviews. Time practicing is important, yet …
Exploring The Effect Of Gender Roles On Female Drug Users In Appalachia, Lauren Fowler
Exploring The Effect Of Gender Roles On Female Drug Users In Appalachia, Lauren Fowler
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Drug abuse is an ever-growing problem in the United States and in other parts of the world. The Appalachian region is one of the areas hit hardest by this epidemic. Since 2000, the number of overdose deaths in Appalachia has steadily risen while state and city governments analyze the potential causes for such a widespread issue. Many economic and medical explanations have been suggested, but it is also imperative to examine the cultural belief systems that might play a role in the persistent drug use. This study looks at the influence traditional Appalachian gender roles have on female drug users. …
