Everything I Know About Gender I Learned From A Little Golden Book!, Chandler Clifford Apr 2019

Everything I Know About Gender I Learned From A Little Golden Book!, Chandler Clifford

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

This feminist cultural intervention examines the power children’s literature has in its ability to interpellate its readers and normalize dominant gendered identities for them. It draws on the work of feminist theorists, such as bell hooks, Judith Butler, and Sandra Bem to interrogate the politics of gender and sexuality in The Little Golden Book series and to examine how the latter has actively worked to create specific cisnormative gender identities for its readers. In this project, Chandler Clifford shows how children’s literature is used as an ideological tool to teach children how gender is performed in the outside world and …

The "Fat Acceptance And Fat Pride Movements" And Consumer Culture: A Critical Intervention On Popular Obesity Discourses, Gabriella Josephine Papas Apr 2019

The "Fat Acceptance And Fat Pride Movements" And Consumer Culture: A Critical Intervention On Popular Obesity Discourses, Gabriella Josephine Papas

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

This project is presented as a critical intervention into the larger debates surrounding the U.S. fat acceptance and fat pride political ‘movements,’ at a historical moment when the country is suffering from a deep obesity epidemic and crisis. At a time of deep concern about increasing healthcare costs and overall societal health, the fact that the dominant discourse among fat activists tends to contradict prevalent positions and findings of contemporary medical research calls for a critical ideological critique of the movements and an interrogation of their rhetoric. In this project Gabriella Papas’ critique combines concepts from both cultural studies and …

Queering Dominant Modes Of Writing And Identity Formation In Audre Lorde’S Zami: A New Spelling Of My Name, Charlie Martin Apr 2019

Queering Dominant Modes Of Writing And Identity Formation In Audre Lorde’S Zami: A New Spelling Of My Name, Charlie Martin

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

As part of a historical formation of marginalized authors who interrogate dominant modes of writing and identity formation in their work, self-described “Black lesbian mother warrior poet” Audre Lorde remakes and reimagines dominant conventions of identity and literary genres in her novel Zami: A New Spelling of My Name to articulate her unique subjectivity as a Black American lesbian writer. Drawing on the work of scholars and activists in the fields of queer theory and feminism, including Cheryl Wall, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Audre Lorde herself, Charlie Martin uses textual and contextual analysis to examine the indelible link between Lorde’s …

Through The Looking Glass: The Perpetuation Of Homelessness Through Awareness Media, Ashley Lauren Knight Apr 2019

Through The Looking Glass: The Perpetuation Of Homelessness Through Awareness Media, Ashley Lauren Knight

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

The definition of who the homelessness are has historically been defined by media. This project performs a genealogical analysis influenced by the work Foucault has done in Madness and Civilization to contextualize the way different forms of media through the years has constructed the homeless stereotype we live with today. By zeroing in on awareness media that is produced by independent documentarians, it becomes apparent the goal is not to educate on the systemic issue of homelessness, but more so to create an empathy-based connection between the subject and the viewer. This paper argues that an empathy-based production is not …

Looking At People Watching People- A Comparative Approach Of American And British Advertising, Kyle Heger Apr 2019

Looking At People Watching People- A Comparative Approach Of American And British Advertising, Kyle Heger

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

Advertising reaches millions of audiences every day, yet some of the most impactful ads only appear once, while other advertisements thrive in a world where audiences are most receptive to what the campaign is feeding to the masses. Spaces like the Super Bowl, ads created for the wonders of television are the bridge between artificial realism and situational experiences that most people can relate or aspire to, but what if one person’s experience is leaning towards misrepresentation? In this paper, I’ll be using media studies to dissect American advertising, through its construction of non-profit advertising and responding to the form …

Architecture In Neoliberalism, Ben J. Kunz Apr 2019

Architecture In Neoliberalism, Ben J. Kunz

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

Neoliberalism, as a form of capitalism that redistributes wealth to existing accumulations of money, has reorganized our society around market relations resulting in extreme inequality. Architecture has been both captive and complicit in this process because it relies on the largess of its clients who benefit most from the process of neoliberalization. We must dissolve the dogma of architectural practice, and become free entrepreneurial operators in a neoliberal society with architecture as a core skill set, able to operate on risk and its dimensions of time, space, and money without the servitude to our risk ordered professional relationships in order …

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

This research consists of a rhetorical analysis of two world leaders: Donald Trump, president of the United States, and Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary. The particular lens of this rhetoric is that of the political far-right. Sustaining Sampradaya: Carnatic Music, Pedagogy, And Devotion At The Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, Rachel Schuck

Open Access Theses

Every year in Cleveland, Ohio, members of the South Indian community participate in the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, the largest event of its kind outside of India. This event features the performance of classical South Indian Carnatic music, and is hosted in honor of Saint Thyagaraja, a renowned nineteenth-century composer of Carnatic songs. As a shared project of long-distance cultural nationalism, this festival brings together artists from India and students from the United States and Canada, allowing Carnatic community members to contest cultural identities in a recontextualized space outside of the homeland. In this ethnography, I expand on the existing Carnatic …

Minutes, Days, Years, Lindsey Palmer Apr 2019

Minutes, Days, Years, Lindsey Palmer

Theses

Minutes, Days, Years, is a body of photographic work presented in an installation format alongside a written companion book. In this work I seek to rebuild my mother’s memories which were lost to electro-convulsion therapy that she received in January 2012. The images are 42 cyanotypes on glass, made from personal archive photos from the years 2008-2011; the time period which her memory is most damaged, and the time I began learning photography. These images are placed atop a 60-inch by 14-foot paper backing, made of two images from the same time period. Minutes, Days, Years references photography as manipulatable …

The World Trade Center 1993 Attack Vs. Osama Bin-Laden’S Fatwa As Causes Of The September 11, 2001 Terror Attack, Jessica Bland

Academic Festival

It is important to study the causes of the September 11 attacks because knowing the root cause of a problem is the best way to fix it. In this study, I will research the question: Was the 1993 World Trade Center bombing more or less of a cause of the September 11, 2001 attacks than Osama Bin-Laden’s fatwa, issued in 1998? I will be using the case study method to conduct this research by looking at previous research done on both topics and coming to a conclusion as to which event was a more major cause. This study is going …

The Impacts Of The Hearings Of Clarence Thomas And Anita Hill, And Brett Kavanaugh And Christine Blasey Ford On Female Voting Behavior, Kaylee Hale Apr 2019

The Impacts Of The Hearings Of Clarence Thomas And Anita Hill, And Brett Kavanaugh And Christine Blasey Ford On Female Voting Behavior, Kaylee Hale

Academic Festival

The Senate Judiciary Committee hearings for Justice Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill occurred in 1991, following Hill’s allegations of sexual harassment against Thomas. Similar hearings were conducted for Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford in 2018, after Ford brought forward accusations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh. This study details the impacts these two cases had on female voting behavior in their subsequent elections.

Using an analysis of voting percentages and the statements of American female voters, it was found that, in both the elections of 1992 and 2018, women voted in higher percentages for Democratic candidates. Additionally, as a …

Political Conjuncture And Scholarly Disjunctures: Reflections On Studies Of The Philippine State Under Marcos, Jr. Aguilar Apr 2019

Political Conjuncture And Scholarly Disjunctures: Reflections On Studies Of The Philippine State Under Marcos, Jr. Aguilar

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

This professorial address contends that a scholarly, systematic, and impartial study of Marcos’s authoritarian rule is necessary, given the highly politicized interpretations of the past bequeathed to younger generations through textbooks and social media as well as the Philippine academic community’s general inability to analyze the defunct regime and to influence public discourse and shape public history. Social scientists must tap new sources of information, such as the Marcos Papers, to produce truthful and nuanced narratives of the past, even as they must endeavor to understand the Marcosian social fantasy and the sources of Filipino authoritarianism, which can illumine both …

Between The Lines: Children’S Literature And The Disney Theme Parks, Michaela Karis Apr 2019

Between The Lines: Children’S Literature And The Disney Theme Parks, Michaela Karis

Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies

Though the Disney theme parks are a common subject of academic analysis, relatively little research has approached the parks from a literary perspective. In this paper, I apply a theory of children’s literature to the Disney parks. By tracing the similarities between the parks and children’s texts, including their use of a “double” level of address, their focus on oppositional binaries, and their deliberate elision of “adult” elements, I demonstrate how the parks legitimize themselves as both childlike and child-appropriate spaces.

The Second British Invasion: This Time, It’S Silent. A Study Of British Television Industry’S Creation Of An Antihegemonic Response To America’S Global Media Predominance, Ellen Thompson Apr 2019

The Second British Invasion: This Time, It’S Silent. A Study Of British Television Industry’S Creation Of An Antihegemonic Response To America’S Global Media Predominance, Ellen Thompson

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This article investigates the response of a one culture against the hegemony of another culture; specifically, efforts by the BBC against the omnipresence of American television media. Anti-hegemonic measures are often considered only in the context of third-world globalization. It is important to note, however, that some Western cultures are not only aware of, but actively resisting American cultural hegemony. The article highlights the BBC’s awareness of, and desire to halt, a massive global television culture shaped solely by American exports. Exports of British content into American markets and beyond are analyzed, as well as the way in which these …

Mobilizing Images Of Black Pain And Death Through Digital Media: Visual Claims To Collective Identity After “I Can’T Breathe”, Aryn Kelly Apr 2019

Mobilizing Images Of Black Pain And Death Through Digital Media: Visual Claims To Collective Identity After “I Can’T Breathe”, Aryn Kelly

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the wake of Eric Garner’s 2014 public execution at the hands of NYPD officers, online spaces such as Twitter saw an influx of remediated imagery referencing Ramsey Orta’s bystander cell phone video of Garner’s death. These images often explicitly reference the chokehold that killed Garner and/or they reappropriate Garner’s last words: “I can’t breathe.” To what formal dimensions in Orta’s video are these remediated images responding? What broader cultural work is the creation of these images doing?

In this project, I regard Orta’s video as the point of entry for considering the cultural work of remediating images from it, …

Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas Apr 2019

Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Solar Minimum cycles and historical events

The catastrophic events of the late Holocene Era followed a cyclical pattern of Solar Minimum activity and described by ancient people in literature. Ancient literature documenting catastrophe is often unclear with catastrophic events mixed between fantasy and non-fiction, and consigned to mythology.

This project will demonstrate that environmental cycles impacting ancient civilizations were a result of cyclical patterns of Solar Minimum activity. Cyclical solar activity is historically observable, with warm periods lasting 540 years and cool periods lasting 400 years. The significance of the Solar Minimum activity occurrence shows patterns of civilization rise and …
