Gestures And Words In Naming: Evidence From Crosslinguistic And Crosscultural Comparison, Allegra Cattani, Caroline Floccia, Evan Kidd, Paola Pettenati, Daniela Onofrio, Virginia Volterra
School of Psychology
We report on an analysis of spontaneous gesture production in 2-year-old children who come from three countries (Italy, United Kingdom, Australia) and who speak two languages (Italian, English), in an attempt to tease apart the influence of language and culture when comparing children from different cultural and linguistic environments. Eighty-seven monolingual children aged 24–30 months completed an experimental task measuring their comprehension and production of nouns and predicates. The Italian children scored significantly higher than the other groups on all lexical measures. With regard to gestures, British children produced significantly fewer pointing and speech combinations compared to Italian and Australian …

Graphic Solidarity: The Internationalist Outlook Of The Cuban Revolution, Katherine E. Mccorkle
Graphic Solidarity: The Internationalist Outlook Of The Cuban Revolution, Katherine E. Mccorkle
Student Scholarship
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the ways in which the internationalist outlook of the Cuban Revolution was promoted through the solidarity posters produced by the OSPAAAL organization. This includes an analysis of the ways in which Cuba was influenced by and spread their influence to nations throughout the world. Particularly interesting is Cuba’s relationship with the United States. While promoting a message of anti- Americanism and anti-capitalist consumerism, Cuba also borrowed heavily from 5 contemporary American artistic traditions, and utilized styles and symbols synonymous with American culture to promote their message of anti-imperialism. While ideologically the poster …

The Importance Of Multiple Narrative Spirituality In Child Development Of Morality In A Pluralistic Society, Jamie Mckeithen
The Importance Of Multiple Narrative Spirituality In Child Development Of Morality In A Pluralistic Society, Jamie Mckeithen
Senior Theses
With the assumption that humans are innately spiritual, I investigate research regarding the development of spirituality that takes place from childhood to adulthood. Over the past 30 years, James Fowler has called upon Erikson’s and Piaget’s cognitive developmental stages of children, in order to understand their spiritual development phases. When reading the myths and origin stories of spiritual belief systems, the commonality found within all of these narratives is the persistent focus on underlying morality. When utilizing stories as a way to teach spiritual morality, children are easily able to recognize and go back to these basic narratives, using their …
Removing Stigma Around Disabilities In The Classroom: The History And Benefits Of Inclusive Education, Kasandra Scourbys
Removing Stigma Around Disabilities In The Classroom: The History And Benefits Of Inclusive Education, Kasandra Scourbys
Senior Theses
The right to an equal education for students with disabilities is not something that has been available to all children until recently. In 1975, the passing of Public Law 94-142 started the movement of social justice and inclusion for all people with diverse learning abilities to receive equal access to an education. This law has been restructured and is currently known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004). Through this law, there are a growing number of students with disabilities (physical, learning, and intellectual) who are being placed in the least restrictive environment and spend most, if not all, …
Liable To Change, Jody Travis Thompson
Liable To Change, Jody Travis Thompson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Liable to Change is a body of paintings in which I explore diverse approaches to the representation of visual space. Depictions of space and movement change throughout the pictures by combining various artistic conventions, such as trompe l’oeil realism and non-objective, geometric abstraction. Oil paint, resin, beeswax, and other materials create built-up surfaces which contain the history of their making. Interaction between various finishes and light on these surfaces changes based on the viewers' proximity to the painting. Images of monkey bars, lattice, golden ratio and flower of life patterns provide a structure through which line, form, and space are …

Notch Inhibitors And The Bet Inhibitor Jq-1 Decrease The Growth Of Primary Tumor Cells Derived From A Novel Mouse Model Of C11orf95-Rela Induced Brain Tumor, Ericka Randazzo, Jesse Dunnack, Justin Fang, Joseph Loturco Phd
University Scholar Projects
Brain tumors are the most common childhood solid malignancy, and because of remarkable advances in treating many cancers outside of the brain, they have become the leading cause of cancer mortality in children. Ependymomas are a class of brain tumors which can be further subdivided into three groups based upon their location and genetic features. Of the three classes, supratentorial ependymomas are the only subgroup known to be marked by an oncogenic driver gene, which consists of a fusion mutation between the C11orf95 and RELA genes. C11orf95-RELA positive tumors are the most aggressive and lethal of …
Trauma Narratives In Mental Health Interpreting : A Qualitative Study., Miranda Hale
Trauma Narratives In Mental Health Interpreting : A Qualitative Study., Miranda Hale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interpreting Studies has seen an increase in research in mental health, but many questions have yet to be explored. This study seeks to contribute to the literature by considering how interpreters render trauma narratives that clients share in counseling sessions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two interpreters who have experience in the mental health setting and one counselor who has worked extensively with interpreters. A thematic analysis of these interviews contributes to a better understanding of the interpreted interactions in this setting, with key points highlighting aspects of the setting itself, the work environment, and interpreters’ trauma awareness. It also …
Family And Socialization Factors In Brazil: An Overview, Maria Auxiliadora Dessen, Cláudio V. Torres
Family And Socialization Factors In Brazil: An Overview, Maria Auxiliadora Dessen, Cláudio V. Torres
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
The structure of the Brazilian family is related to five sub-cultures that, in turn, relate to the geographic regions of the country. This chapter presents a brief characterization of Brazilian culture and family, and describes changes in the structural relations and in the redefinition of models of Brazilian family organization. In order to illustrate the subtle interactions among social factors that influence the family in Brazil, we point out some values, beliefs, and practices employed by middle- and working-class parents. This paper also describes some of the characteristics of parent-child relationships within these families, providing an overview of children’s work, …
Effect Of Polymer Composition Of Injectable Hydrogels On Programmable Release Of Methylene Blue, Mary Brandecker
Effect Of Polymer Composition Of Injectable Hydrogels On Programmable Release Of Methylene Blue, Mary Brandecker
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Temperature sensitive hydrogels have been used as injectable hydrogels because the polymer solutions can be liquid at room temperature and gel at body temperature. Injectable hydrogels have been used in biomedical applications to deliver drugs and other small molecules throughout the body. Methylene Blue was used as the drug in this study for its antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. PluronicⓇ F127 (PF127) is a copolymer consisting of repeating units of polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide in the form PEO-PPO-PEO. PF127 in solution is a temperature sensitive hydrogel that transitions to a gel at body temperature at specific polymer compositions. A standard …

Effect Of Tyrosine On The Productivity Of Pc12 Cells By Measuring Extracellular Atp Release, Sabrina Burkholder, Mary Rapmund, David Fogel, Jon Flees
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Given the challenge to “reverse-engineer the brain”, our group tried to address the problems of a lack of long term focus and attention span. Tyrosine was determined to aid in mental focus and brain productivity as it is a precursor to the neurotransmitter Dopamine. Given that Tyrosine is naturally occurring in the body, it is preferable to add to the body, whereas a substance like Adderall has negative effects, including increased heart rate that, over time, can cause cardiovascular damage. Drawing connections between in increase ATP and an increased ability to focus and perform under stress, extracellular ATP secretion of …
The Effects Of The Source Of Celebrity Information On Parasocial Relationships, Noelle Roys, Monique Newman, Mark Spooner-Leduff
The Effects Of The Source Of Celebrity Information On Parasocial Relationships, Noelle Roys, Monique Newman, Mark Spooner-Leduff
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The purpose of the study is to examine how the source of information about celebrities affects media users’ feelings toward them. Specifically, we will focus on two ways in which people relate to media figures. Parasocial relationships (PSR) are one-sided relationships that people form with media figures. The concept of parasocial interaction (PSI) is closely related in that it entails one-sided involvement with a media figure, but the experience is restricted to the duration a person is viewing the figure. Due to the nature of social media and to celebrities’ increasing use of social media platforms, existing research implies that …
Effects Of Skin Color And Clothing Color On Perceived Violence And Aggression Of Criminals, Courtney Merchant
Effects Of Skin Color And Clothing Color On Perceived Violence And Aggression Of Criminals, Courtney Merchant
USC Aiken Psychology Theses
Introduction: Society has a history of attaching meaning to colors, and few colors have been given as much attention as red and black. In many contexts, these colors have strong negative associations. Red has long been representative of danger and aggression (Young, Elliot, Feltman, & Ambady, 2013), while black represents death and evil (Adams & Osgood, 1973; Sherman & Clore, 2009). Unfortunately, color associations are not limited to clothing or advertisements; skin color is also a subject of negative associations in the form of stereotyping. Darker skinned people, especially African-Americans, have long been subjected to negative stereotypes. The current …
Ethical Problems With Plastic In The Ocean, Brennan Cotter
Ethical Problems With Plastic In The Ocean, Brennan Cotter
Senior Theses
In the year 2018 this paper argues that plastic use and waste is destroying our oceans and that we should address the problem by fully adopting the principle and practices of sustainability. The first section outlines the advent of our plastic disposable culture. The second section gives evidence of how plastic waste is negatively affecting marine life. The third section draws from literature in environmental philosophy to develop the concept of sustainability, and the concluding section outlines several steps we can take as individuals and nations to practice sustainability.

The Dna Damage Response Gene Ddr48 Regulates Sterol Synthesis Genes To Confer Antifungal Resistance To The Pathogenic Fungus Histoplasma Capsulatum, Gabriella Reyes
Honors Theses
Histoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic fungal pathogen that is endemic to the Ohio, Missouri, and Mississippi river valley regions. The fungus grows as a mold at environmental temperatures (25C) and transforms into a unicellular yeast upon inhalation by a mammalian host (37C). The mold to yeast shift is required for pathogenicity in host organisms, where the potentially fatal disease, histoplasmosis, can present. This study aims to characterize the DNA damage response protein DDR48 and the role that it plays in combating cellular stressors in H. capsulatum. We found that DDR48 is expressed strongly in the mold phase but expressed only …

Children Of A One-Eyed God: Impairment In The Myth And Memory Of Medieval Scandinavia, Michael David Lawson
Children Of A One-Eyed God: Impairment In The Myth And Memory Of Medieval Scandinavia, Michael David Lawson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using the lives of impaired individuals catalogued in the Íslendingasögur as a narrative framework, this study examines medieval Scandinavian social views regarding impairment from the ninth to the thirteenth century. Beginning with the myths and legends of the eddic poetry and prose of Iceland, it investigates impairment in Norse pre-Christian belief; demonstrating how myth and memory informed medieval conceptualizations of the body. This thesis counters scholarly assumptions that the impaired were universally marginalized across medieval Europe. It argues that bodily difference, in the Norse world, was only viewed as a limitation when it prevented an individual from fulfilling roles that …

Cooking Lessons: Oral Recipe Sharing In The Southern Kitchen, Alana Claxton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study analyzes oral recipe sharing practices as they emerge in Southern cooking. Researcher and participants were immersed in cooking recipes together in a qualitative research method that combined interactive interviewing with sensory ethnography. Findings revealed a category of oral recipe sharing practices that is missing from the literature: cooking lessons. This study identified cooking lessons as a distinct recipe sharing practice and worked to further operationalize and concretize such practices in hopes of spurring further research.
Becoming A Master Manager: An Analysis Of Snap Recipient Stories Of Navigating Government Assistance, Kallie Gay
Becoming A Master Manager: An Analysis Of Snap Recipient Stories Of Navigating Government Assistance, Kallie Gay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines experiences of utilizing government assistance in the United States. It focuses on the ways in which persons participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) communicatively managed their lives in relation to their role in the program. Specifically, the research reveals that SNAP recipients are master managers. After synthesizing the pre-existing body of research concerning social assistance in the U.S. and its effects on those who utilize it, the author argues that sharing the stories of marginalized groups can serve to reduce stigma surrounding government assistance participation. Employing a Feminist Standpoint Theory sensibility to elicit such stories, …
Always In-Formation: The Presence Of Sound In The Work Of Dan Graham, Jennifer Smart
Always In-Formation: The Presence Of Sound In The Work Of Dan Graham, Jennifer Smart
Art History Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues for a reconsideration of the role sound plays in the work of the American artist Dan Graham. Graham regularly used his work as a means of drawing viewer’s attention to the seemingly infinite multiplicity of the subjective experience which shapes their encounter with the visual art object. I argue Graham’s engagement with music and his involvement in the multidisciplinary art scene of Downtown New York City in the 1970s and 80s shaped and encouraged his interest in this greater sensorial environment in which a work of art is encountered. Through performance, video, and architecture, Graham has attempted …

The Portrayal Of Income Inequality As Represented In American And Spanish Film, Chloe Riggs
The Portrayal Of Income Inequality As Represented In American And Spanish Film, Chloe Riggs
Political Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this thesis, I will examine the portrayal of wealth in film. Further, I argue that the portrayal of wealth in film has the power to shape the public’s perceptions of income inequality, even going so far as to later impact their actions towards both their own and differing economic classes (Kendall 2011; Kenworthy 2007). With a film’s ability to portray wealth, stressing the importance of an individual’s position on the hierarchal economic ladder, the individual is led to view both success and failure as a personal matter, the latter with a scornful gaze. This belief is then naturally cycled …
Barriers To Public Knowledge Transfer Within The Field Of Communication, Vincent White
Barriers To Public Knowledge Transfer Within The Field Of Communication, Vincent White
All Theses
Scholars have debated whether communication research is producing an impact on communication practices and outcomes. With the communication discipline being uniquely positioned to be both relevant and applicable to public audiences, the relevance and applicability of the discipline are futile if the final resting place of communication scholarship is academic journals. A fundamental element of producing significant research that addresses society's biggest problems is communicating with public audiences. The purpose of this research was to understand any challenges involved in the public knowledge transfer (KT) of research by communication faculty to public audiences. Identifying participants through Criterion Sampling, this research …

Approaches To Contested In-Group Terminology For Mindful Editors, Jasmine Gower
Approaches To Contested In-Group Terminology For Mindful Editors, Jasmine Gower
Book Publishing Final Research Papers
In the conversation about mindful editing, a conundrum exists with regards to marginalized groups for whom all possible labels to identify the group contain loaded histories and connotations, and different subsets of these marginalized groups are in disagreement about what terminology is most appropriate. This contested in-group terminology places editors in a position where any editorial choice they make has high risk of offending or alienated members of the very group the editor hopes to represent. How, then, do mindful editors approach the matter of contested in-group terminology in an ethical manner? This study examines the approaches to contested in-group …

Black Female Graduate Students' Experiences Of Racial Microaggressions At A Southern University, Kendra Elizabeth Shoge
Black Female Graduate Students' Experiences Of Racial Microaggressions At A Southern University, Kendra Elizabeth Shoge
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have found that microaggressions can cause psychological distress, frustration, avoidance, confusion, resentment, hopelessness, and fear. Previous studies from Southern universities have addressed the adjustment experiences of Black women in graduate programs, obstacles faced by Black women in higher education and strategies to overcome those obstacles, and factors associated with Black student motivation and achievement. Discrimination and racism are factors identified in those studies, however, there is little research on the experiences of Black women in graduate programs and the impact of racial microaggressions on them.
The purpose of this study was to examine Black female graduate students’ experiences of …
