Why Informed Consent? Human Experimentation And The Ethics Of Autonomy, Richard W. Garnett Jan 1996

Why Informed Consent? Human Experimentation And The Ethics Of Autonomy, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

Not long ago, the welfare reform debate took a provocative turn. New Jersey welfare recipients challenged the state's Family Cap rule, which denied additional cash aid to parents who conceive children while on welfare. Welfare rights activists argued that the rule "with[held] benefits to see if [this would] alter human behavior." They insisted that the innovative, but stern, Family Cap rules were effectively experiments on welfare recipients without their consent.

This is a powerful argument. After all, consent enjoys talismanic—if not sacramental—status in modem life and thought; it is our "master concept." But why? Why should consenting mean so much …

Guided Imagery And Music, Katheen Muleady Seager

Graduate Research Papers

Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is a technique that involves listening to carefully selected music in a relaxed and meditative state for the purpose of reaching altered states of consciousness, and allowing images, symbols, and deep feelings to arise from the inner self. This process facilitates therapeutic intervention, self-understanding, holistic healing and personal growth (Bonny, 1978b). The purpose of this paper is to examine the theoretical basis and development of GIM and to present examples of GIM usage in various therapeutic settings. GIM was selected for investigation because of its association with holistic health movements and applicability to death and …

Art Therapy As A Means Of Ego Enhancement For Severely And Profoundly Mentally Retardedk, Kimberly Riemer May 1981

Art Therapy As A Means Of Ego Enhancement For Severely And Profoundly Mentally Retardedk, Kimberly Riemer

Theses

Kimberly Riemer’s thesis, Art Therapy as a Means of Ego Enhancement for the Severely and Profoundly Mentally Retarded (1981), explores the impact of art therapy on individuals with severe and profound mental retardation. The study was conducted as part of a six-month practicum, during which Riemer worked with both children and adults in a specialized educational and vocational setting.

Drawing from psychological theories, particularly those of Erik Erikson, Riemer argues that ego development is crucial for mentally retarded individuals. She hypothesizes that if art therapy can aid emotionally disturbed individuals, it should also benefit those with cognitive impairments. Through structured …
