From Ordinary To Extraordinary: Using Storytelling To Reveal The Hidden Histories Of Objects And Enhance Meaning Making In A Living History Village, Jill Poppenheimer Johnson Apr 2024

From Ordinary To Extraordinary: Using Storytelling To Reveal The Hidden Histories Of Objects And Enhance Meaning Making In A Living History Village, Jill Poppenheimer Johnson

Theses

Objects without a narrative are simply things. By contrast, an object with a story can be used as a vehicle for a museum to open dialogues with visitors about the people of that time period, how they lived their lives, and what social aspects influenced them. The story of an object, what makes it different from hundreds of others just like it, can change it from ordinary to extraordinary and be used as a powerful learning tool by helping the audience to create connections and make meaning of what they are seeing and experiencing. This thesis explores the relationships between …

Transfer Learning Across Domains And Sensing Modalities, Chowdhury Sadman Jahan Apr 2024

Transfer Learning Across Domains And Sensing Modalities, Chowdhury Sadman Jahan

Theses

Transfer learning facilitates the training of a deep learning (DL) model with limited or no labeled data, by initializing the network parameters using a similar model already trained on a different but related dataset or task. This dissertation examines two special cases of transfer learning for image classification tasks: cross-modal supervised learning, and cross-domain unsupervised adaptation. This dissertation proposes to apply cross-modal transfer learning to guide the training process of a DL model on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images via knowledge distillation from a DL model trained on corresponding electro-optical (EO) images. Furthermore, this approach explores class-balanced sampling strategies and …

Teacher Professional Education And Student Learning: A Secondary Analysis Of Nationwide Data, Aisha Naz Ansari, Sadia Muzaffar Bhutta, Sohail Ahmad

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Professional qualification of teachers is widely recognised instrumental for enhancing students’ learning experiences and outcomes. Recently, the introduction of 4-year B.Ed Hons programme was introduced in Pakistan with the intention that it will help in preparing professionally qualified teachers who would not only demonstrate better classroom practices but also contribute to enhancing their students learning. This paper employed a secondary analysis of a nationwide dataset to compare students’ performance who are taught by teachers with B.Ed (Hons), B.Ed, and no professional qualifications. Furthermore, this study also present descriptive comparison of classroom teaching practices of these three types of teachers. The …

Accounting For The Gift: Theology And Ethics In Accounting, Daniel Sebastian Apr 2024

Accounting For The Gift: Theology And Ethics In Accounting, Daniel Sebastian

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

Accounting is often assumed to be a neutral presentation of the facts of economic activities and actions. Its double-entry system means that it is always in balance and comports to the rigor of mathematical formulas, and it is taken to be a matter of empirical counting that lends it certainty as well. The dissertation argues that this description of accounting is inadequate. Accounting is better seen as a political tool and technology for producing trust that can help resolve social conflicts. As such, accounting is not value-neutral but carries within it a particular sociality that has moral implications. These moral …

BACKGROUND: In 2020, 2.8 million people required substance use disorder (SUD) treatment in nonmetropolitan or 'rural' areas in the U.S. Among this population, only 10% received SUD treatment from a specialty facility, and 1 in 500 received medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). We explored the context surrounding barriers to SUD treatment in the rural United States.

METHODS: We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews from 2018 to 2019 to assess barriers to SUD treatment among people who use drugs (PWUD) across seven rural U.S. study sites. Using the social-ecological model (SEM), we examined individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and policy factors contributing …

An Epck Challenge: A Study Of The Major Challenges That Certified, Nonveteran English Language Arts Elementary School Teachers In A Southeast State Of The United States Face With Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Lindsay Medford-Fazio

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The complexity and expansiveness of the discipline of English Language Arts makes it necessary to equip novice teachers with an understanding of pedagogical content knowledge within the ELA framework. This study aimed at discerning whether novice, elementary ELA teachers in a southeast state of the United States experienced challenges with PCK in ELA and at discovering the root of these problems. An extensive literature review was conducted. This review highlighted Lee Shulman’s theory of PCK which guided the study. The review found that ELA was the only discipline without a PCK model. The various components of ELA, with an emphasis …

Exploration On Lysing Microalgae Using Pulsed Electric Fields, Fereshteh A. Bunk

Physics

With a dangerously and rapidly changing climate [1], people globally are desperate to reduce CO2 emissions and protect our environment as evidenced by global initiatives such as the United Nations’ Paris Agreement [2]. Traditional fossil fuel extraction and combustion was responsible for 74% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, which contributes to climate change, ocean acidification, extreme weather events, sea level rise, pollution, and health issues which contributed to 350,000 premature deaths in the U.S. in 2018 [3]. This motivates the search for alternative, more sustainable fuel production. There have been many new, more sustainable solutions to traditional fossil …

“Uphill . . . Both Ways!” The Issues With Missouri’S Compulsory Attendance Legislation, Amaris Garber Apr 2024

“Uphill . . . Both Ways!” The Issues With Missouri’S Compulsory Attendance Legislation, Amaris Garber

Missouri Law Review

“When I was a kid, I walked to school uphill . . . both ways!” Hidden in this adage is a kernel of truth regarding America’s relationship with education: for many Americans, school attendance is often difficult for more reasons than just the early morning struggle of getting out of bed. Prior to 2020, 15% of students missed at least 10% of the school year. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, absenteeism increased at worrisome rates; in the 2021-2022 school year, more than 25% of students missed at least 10% of the school year. In Missouri specifically, chronic absenteeism …

The Judge-Made Constitutional Penumbra: Why Anti-Bds Laws Unavoidably Implicate The First Amendment And How The Eighth Circuit Avoided Them, Tasneem Huq Apr 2024

The Judge-Made Constitutional Penumbra: Why Anti-Bds Laws Unavoidably Implicate The First Amendment And How The Eighth Circuit Avoided Them, Tasneem Huq

Missouri Law Review

Freedom of speech and assembly, as protected by the First Amendment, has long been a defining character of “The Land of the Free.” Much of American history has been influenced by actions deemed protected by the First Amendment. Such protection offers American citizens power that the Constitution otherwise reserves for the three government branches: the power to change the law which all American citizens live under and by which they must abide. A commonly recognized form of expression protected by the First Amendment is participation in non-violent protests. The Palestinian advocacy movement is one such movement that utilizes this form …

On The Hook: Venue, Vicinage, And Double Jeopardy’S Relationship With Modern Data Crimes, Cody Deterding

Missouri Law Review

Every fisherman has a place he holds dear. Whether it be a mountain creek small enough to hop across or a reef in the Gulf of Mexico, we all have a place where “the big one” defeated us. Conversely, we all have a spot in which we emerged victorious, spurring feelings of elation. We all have memories so compelling that we feel the need to share our stories around the dinner table and remind friends how much they missed out on that day. Ingrained in my memory is the flash of a twenty-inch brown trout sipping a fly from the …

The Use Of Figurative Suicidal Language By College Students And Its Impact On Mental Health And Suicide Stigma, Makayla Hooker Apr 2024

The Use Of Figurative Suicidal Language By College Students And Its Impact On Mental Health And Suicide Stigma, Makayla Hooker

Senior Theses

Using suicidal language as a hyperbole in everyday conversation has become common for college students experiencing stress. Previous research analyzed use of suicidal language on social media with the intention of finding the best way to provide help to the individuals expressing true suicidal ideation on social media but found that many people do not literally mean what they are saying when they use suicidal language. It was hypothesized that the frequency with which individuals use suicidal statements figuratively as well as the frequency with which they hear others use these statements would negatively correlate with the level of seriousness …

Warrior Voices: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Experiences Of Men Living With Multiple Sclerosis, James Petropulos

Dissertations

This narrative inquiry delves into the lives of six men, including the researcher, who have multiple sclerosis (MS). Through in-depth interviews, the researcher asks participants to describe their life before diagnosis, the diagnosis process, and the construction of a “new normal” after diagnosis. This research provides insights into how participants make sense of the disease, how they cope with the ongoing changes to their bodies, their relationships, their careers, and their perceptions of their masculinity. Analyzing the narratives provides insight into the variability of MS types and symptoms, and various coping mechanisms. It supports the idea that each participant should …

Teacher Roles In Correction: Understanding Disciplinary Alternative School Programs In Nebraska, Philip Thomas White Iii Apr 2024

Teacher Roles In Correction: Understanding Disciplinary Alternative School Programs In Nebraska, Philip Thomas White Iii

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Through semi-structured interviews with teachers and semi-structured interviews-turned-testimonios of students, I have sought to understand the purposes and consequences of Disciplinary Alternative Programs (DAP). Four different locations from across the state of Nebraska were utilized with 16 teachers and two students participating. Research questions considered the purpose of DAPs to better understand how these programs fit into broader systems of schooling. While highly cautious IRB oversight limited the number of students who could be participants in this study, their insights were substantially augmented by the sixteen educators from such environments who were also interviewed. Participant responses offered nuanced and …

“Personal, Relational, And Extraordinary”: Learning From The Spiritual Language Of Gen Z, Gabrielle Poma Apr 2024

“Personal, Relational, And Extraordinary”: Learning From The Spiritual Language Of Gen Z, Gabrielle Poma

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores the crucial role of language in understanding the spiritual lives of young people today, commonly known as “Gen Z.”

Though significant disaffiliation rates among young people often cause alarm within faith communities, this paper argues that listening carefully to the language of young people provides a more nuanced, in-depth picture that statistics on religious affiliation do not capture, which is critical in developing effective pastoral care for young adults.

This paper opens with a sociocultural approach to Gen Z, drawing upon generational analysis and sociological data to demonstrate how different types of research yield varied results in …

Crispr, Omega, And Fanzor: Mixed Blessings Of Genome Editing Technology, Haeun Tae Apr 2024

Crispr, Omega, And Fanzor: Mixed Blessings Of Genome Editing Technology, Haeun Tae

Senior Honors Theses

A little more than a decade ago, CRISPR-Cas system was identified as a potential gene editing tool. This RNA-guided DNA cleavage system, which naturally provides immunity to the prokaryotic host cell, has been engineered since for its application in agriculture, genomic screening, and hereditary genetic disorder treatment and cures. Recently, a eukaryotic CRISPR-Cas-like system, Fanzor, was reported, under a new class of the RNA-guided system (termed OMEGA). The discovery has increased the potentials of genetic modification more than ever, while simultaneously increasing the need for ethical considerations and guidelines. The history, structure, and functions of the two RNA-guided systems, as …

Going Beyond Fear In Addressing Attorney Mental Health, Eric C. Lang Apr 2024

Going Beyond Fear In Addressing Attorney Mental Health, Eric C. Lang

Mercer Law Review

We know that a career in law is challenging, but our profession has only recently focused on the mental health consequences of those challenges. We first started analyzing mental health issues after a number of attorney suicides caught the public eye. Realizing the problem was much broader than the tragic outcome of suicide, we have spent the last several years focused on the use of statistics to convince the profession of its own dangers. The solution, to date, has been an emphasis on Lawyer Assistance Programs and “wellness” initiatives accompanied by what could be described as scare tactics designed to …

Intensive English Program Design For Minnesota Public School District, Ellen Bialka Apr 2024

Intensive English Program Design For Minnesota Public School District, Ellen Bialka

Capstone Collection

The recent rise in undocumented immigrants in Minnesota has brought to light significant demographic shifts within the state. Many individuals in this population have limited or no proficiency in English, which highlights the challenges immigrant communities face in adapting to their new linguistic surroundings. As a result, educators have been presented with the challenge of serving a growing number of immigrant children in their schools. To tackle this issue, an intensive English program was developed for a suburban public school district in Minnesota to offer a more targeted approach to improving English proficiency among students before beginning courses required for …

Postoperative Discharge Opioid Education Including Narcan Kit Access To Prevent Overdose: A Quality Improvement Project, Arezo Aziz

DNP Projects

Significance and Background: Opioid related overdoses are considered a public health epidemic and emergency in recent years within the United States. With a staggering number of opioid related deaths which have continued to rise, steps have been taken to decrease risk within local communities through programs including personalized patient education during provider visits, the dispensing of Naloxone with opioid prescriptions and encouraging the use of alternative pain management strategies. Most recently, New York State passed a recommendation encouraging all healthcare providers to prescribe Naloxone with the first opioid prescription of each year for patients deemed high risk for overdose. A …

...to break the rules wisely, you have to know the rules well.

–Le Guin, Steering the Craft

I finished my doctorate in June of 2019. Most of my waking hours that late summer and early fall were spent writing and rewriting cover letters, teaching statements, and research agendas (and equity statements, long CVs, short CVs, etc.)—all the variegated materials demanded from applicants to tenure-track positions in North American law faculties. Writing those materials, and integrating the feedback on early drafts that I received from a host of generous peers and colleagues, became an accidental study in the principal subtext of …

Why The Multilateral Investment Court Is A Bad Idea For Africa, Akinwumi Ogunranti Apr 2024

Why The Multilateral Investment Court Is A Bad Idea For Africa, Akinwumi Ogunranti

Dalhousie Law Journal

The UNCITRAL Working Group III (WG III) is discussing procedural reforms in the investor state dispute settlement system (ISDS). The ISDS framework is criticized on various grounds, including arbitrator bias, lack of transparency, and inconsistent arbitral decisions. One of the recent reform proposals before the WG III is the possibility of a multilateral investment court (MIC). This proposal is championed by European Union states and supported by Canada. The proposal recommends replacing ISDS’ Ad hoc investment tribunals with an established and permanent court where states appoint judges. This paper examines the MIC reform option and argues that replacing the ISDS …

What We Pretend To Be: Codifying A Right To A Religious Advisor In The Execution Chamber, Claire R. Jenkins Apr 2024

What We Pretend To Be: Codifying A Right To A Religious Advisor In The Execution Chamber, Claire R. Jenkins

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Over the last fifty years, the Supreme Court has moved the pendulum both toward religious accommodation and away from it. After a decade of oscillating Court decisions, multiple attempts at corrective action by Congress, and widespread social activism, the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Person’s Act, or RLUIPA, was passed in 2000. RLUIPA was designed to fortify the rights of incarcerated persons and provide clarification to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. As of 2024, the Supreme Court has granted certiorari in only a few RLUIPA cases—and has decided even less about the application of the law to death row inmates. …

Cherry-Picking History: Witchcraft, The Common Law, And The Weaponization Of Substantive Due Process, Sarah E. Bradley Apr 2024

Cherry-Picking History: Witchcraft, The Common Law, And The Weaponization Of Substantive Due Process, Sarah E. Bradley

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

In 2021, the Supreme Court sharply altered its substantive due process analysis in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, reversing the 49-year-old decision in Roe v. Wade to establish abortion access as a constitutional right. The Court reframed its substantive due process analysis as a two-step test, requiring a right to be narrowly framed and “deeply rooted in history and tradition” before it could be analyzed as “implicit in the concept of liberty,” instead of its previous balancing test that involved a broad description of the right. In the Dobbs majority opinion, the Court cherry-picked elements of common law …

Materiality In The Long Now: Navigating The Intersection Of Decision-Making, Time, And Strategy, Daniel M. Labovitz, Alexander Kontoleon Apr 2024

Materiality In The Long Now: Navigating The Intersection Of Decision-Making, Time, And Strategy, Daniel M. Labovitz, Alexander Kontoleon

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Existing formulations of materiality in the federal securities laws contain an inherent limitation because they don’t adequately account for how risks and opportunities change over time. This can mislead investors looking to understand how well a company is poised to avoid long-dated risks and take advantage of evolving opportunities because those risks and opportunities don’t neatly fit into the rubric of “likelihood of occurrence times magnitude of harm equals materiality.” This is because the likelihood of any long-dated risk occurring within a short reporting time frame will always approach zero, which means the traditional model of materiality will always classify …

Keeping Your Eye On The Esg Sustainable Development Ball, Richard J. Sobelsohn Apr 2024

Keeping Your Eye On The Esg Sustainable Development Ball, Richard J. Sobelsohn

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Environmental, Social, and Governance (“ESG”) mandates were originally aspirational sound-bites, but now they have become a part of many companies’ mandates. Most recently with some backlash against ESG directives, most organizations are still complying with their original goals, because the economic arguments for having an ESG protocol is still valid. This article discusses what ESG is, how it relates to different types of companies, and most importantly, what legal issues pertain to it.

This Article examines how ESG guidelines pertain to different types of entities, and how these protocols affect everything from contract drafting, construction of a property, operations and …
