According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 17.6% of all fatal crashes in the years 2017–2021 involved a drowsy driver. This study proposes a drowsy driver detection system that uses both facial recognition and vehicular data to detect if a driver is feeling sleepy behind the wheel. We aim to address a lack of works in the literature that combine data measured from the driver (image or biological data) and vehicular data for drowsy driver detection. Our primary data was collected from simulated driving sessions in which a camera was used to record test drivers’ faces while …

Decision Tree And Rule Based Classification For Predicting Online Purchase Behavior In Malaysia, Maslina Abdul Aziz, Nurul Ain Mustakim, Shuzlina Abdul Rahman
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
In Malaysia, fast growth in e-commerce speeds a business need to understand and predict consumer online behavior in order to be more competitive. While the whole world is embracing big data analytics, many businesses in Malaysia, particularly those in the ecommerce sector, find it hard to harness these technologies to their benefit. The absence of specific predictive models and the complexity of socio-cultural diversity further complicate the efforts toward understanding consumer preferences. Therefore, this research tries to fill in some of the gaps by applying decision tree and rule-based algorithms to classify online purchasing behavior amongst Malaysian consumers. The study …

Osteoarthritis (OA) in the knee is a major cause of decreased activity and physical limitations among older people. Identifying and treating knee osteoarthritis in its early stages can help patients delay the progression of the condition. Currently, early detection of knee osteoarthritis involves the use of X-ray images and assessment using the Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading system. Doctors' evaluations can be subjective and may differ among different doctors. Similar to a computer systems analyst, the automatic knee OA grading and diagnosis can be a valuable tool for doctors, enabling them to streamline their workload and provide more efficient care. An innovative …

Executive Actions To Ensure Safe And Responsible Ocean Carbon Dioxide Removal Research In The United States, Romany M. Webb, Korey Silverman-Roati
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
This paper presents recommended actions that federal agencies could take, under existing law, to ensure safe and responsible permitting and regulation of ocean carbon dioxide removal (CDR) research in U.S. waters. Controlled field trials and other in-ocean research is critical to improve scientific and societal understanding of ocean CDR techniques that could help the U.S. reach its climate goals. That could raise a host of legal issues, however. Existing legal frameworks were not designed to regulate ocean CDR, and federal agencies have yet to fully explain how decades-old environmental laws will be applied to a new set of activities. This …

This Has Not Happened: African American Performances At The Edge Of The Century, Andie Berry
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation articulates a relationship among sociopolitical crisis, speculation, and spectacle that emerges from the fiscal and social conservatism of the 1980s. I argue that, over the last four decades, theater presents a distinctive opportunity to push beyond politics of representation to an embodied mode of speculative thought. By analyzing the impossible longevity that ties together August Wilson’s American Century Cycle (1982-2005), the sonic inscrutability of the black body in Lisa Jones’s and Suzan-Lori Parks’s respective radio dramas Ethnic Cleansing (1993) and Loco-motive (1991), and the layers of transparency and opacity in Jackie Sibblies Drury’s stage plays Really (2016) and …
Features Selection In Regression Models Using Variance-Based Sensitivity Analysis, Jakob Spiller
Features Selection In Regression Models Using Variance-Based Sensitivity Analysis, Jakob Spiller
Honors Theses
Variance-based sensitivity analysis serves as a crucial tool for assessing the variability of inputs on the output of complex mathematical models. In this thesis, we study Sobol indices, a class of variance-based sensitivity analysis, to quantify the importance of each input variable on the overall variability of the model output. We initially discuss Sobol’s first and total order indices. This includes a brief demonstration through two examples: the Sobol G-function and a polynomial function each with six input variables. These examples serve to highlight the theoretical foundations and practical applications of Sobol’s indices in analyzing model sensitivities. Mainly, we apply …
Differences In Dynamic Knee Valgus Using Kinesiology Tape In Female Athletes, Riley J. Williams
Differences In Dynamic Knee Valgus Using Kinesiology Tape In Female Athletes, Riley J. Williams
Honors Theses
Excessive dynamic knee valgus (DKV) is commonly known as improper alignment in the frontal plane combined with excessive hip adduction, internal rotation, and tibia external rotation (Besier, Gold, Delp, Fredericson, & Beaupré, 2008; Maykut, Taylor-Haas, Paterno, DiCesare & Ford, 2015). More specifically, DKV is a medial collapse of the knee resulting in a hip adduction and internal rotation, tibial abduction and medial knee displacement, which increases the ACL strain (Llurda-Almuzara et al., 2020). Namata et al. (2018), using a three-dimensional kinematic analysis, reported female athletes are more commonly known to obtain a greater knee valgus angle when participating in landing …
Estimating Direction Of Arrival For Multi-Arm Spiral Antennas Using Machine Learning, Samuel Pearson
Estimating Direction Of Arrival For Multi-Arm Spiral Antennas Using Machine Learning, Samuel Pearson
Honors Theses
Military systems require monitoring a wide frequency range of the RF spectrum to detect and monitor enemy targets. A vital component of that is calculating the direction of arrival of enemy radars. The use of compressive sensing architectures like the Nyquist Folding Receiver (NyFR) allow for computationally cheap capturing of wideband signals; however, these techniques make traditional direction of arrival (DOA) estimation techniques difficult. Given the advantages of compressive sensing, this research aims to apply machine learning (ML) techniques to multi-arm spiral antennas to estimate the incoming DOA. Software like MATLAB was used to simulate the multi-arm spiral antenna and …

Remotely Sensed Imagery Reveals Animal Feeding Operations Increase Downstream Dissolved Reactive Phosphorus, Andrew G. Meyer, Zach Raff, Sarah Porter
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we use remotely sensed imagery to identify the location and size of animal feeding operations in the Maumee River Watershed, a key drainage area to Lake Erie's Western Basin, which has recently experienced severe harmful algal blooms. We then estimate the relationship between the intensity of animal feeding operations in the watershed and surface water body concentrations of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), the pollutant most responsible for algal growth. We find that stream reaches with relatively larger increases in upstream animal feeding exposure experience significantly higher increases in concentrations of DRP. The average marginal upstream animal feeding …
Political Affirmative Action, Girardeau A. Spann
Political Affirmative Action, Girardeau A. Spann
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In the Supreme Court’s most recent affirmative action decision—Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. (SFFA) v. President & Fellows of Harvard College—the Court wrongly continued to believe that it has a role to play in determining the constitutionality of affirmative action. Where the Constitution lacks a legal standard that is sufficiently precise to provide meaningful constraint on the exercise of judicial discretion, questions concerning proper interpretation of that standard are what Marbury v. Madison deemed to be “in their nature political” and therefore “only politically examinable.” In such cases, the Constitution simply means what the political branches of government …

Constitutional Supremacy, Inherent Powers, And Orders That Damages Or Costs Be Paid In Instalments: Tan Meow Hiang V Ong Kay Yong [2023] Sghc 286, Benjamin Joshua Ong
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The General Division of the High Court of Singapore stated (obiter) in Tan Meow Hiang v Ong Kay Yong that it does not have a general power to order that damages or costs be paid in instalments. It reasoned that any such power must have been impliedly restricted by legislation. So instalment orders can only be made (a) by certain subordinate courts; (b) by the General Division on appeal; (c) by the General Division at first instance in personal injury cases. In response, this note aims to advance the conversation on the law on instalment orders and what the Constitution …

Conceptualising State-Centric Mediation: An Analysis Of China's Foreign Investment Complaints Mechanism, Mark Mclaughlin
Conceptualising State-Centric Mediation: An Analysis Of China's Foreign Investment Complaints Mechanism, Mark Mclaughlin
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This article argues that China's foreign investor complaints system constitutes 'state-centric investment mediation'. The Rules on Handling Complaints of Foreign-Invested Enterprises, which entered into force on 1 October 2020, place a state agency in the position of facilitating negotiations between a foreign investor and the agency being complained against. The prospects for this complaints system depend on how the state-as-mediator dynamic is perceived by foreign investors. To this end, it will be argued that settlement agreements reached pursuant to this system may be enforceable under the Singapore Convention on Mediation in certain circumstances. Investors and government entities operating similar systems …
Topological Spaces Of Embodied Becoming: Queens, Queerness And (Infra)Structural Subterfuge In Singapore, Orlando Woods
Topological Spaces Of Embodied Becoming: Queens, Queerness And (Infra)Structural Subterfuge In Singapore, Orlando Woods
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper considers the political potential that emerges when theorizations of the body-as-infrastructure are brought into conversation with theorizations of topological space. It argues that the infrastructural body provides an interface through which structural norms can be destabilized, and the interrelationships between the state, society, and self can be reimagined. These ideas are illustrated through an empirical exploration of drag queens in Singapore. Singapore is a socially conservative Asian city-state in which heteronormative values are passed down by the state, reproduced through the family, and then used to structure societal under- standings of gender and sexuality. By interpreting Singapore’s hegemonic …

A Novel Approach To Defect Detection In Arabica Coffee Beans Using Deep Learning: Investigating Data Augmentation And Model Optimization, Yusriel Ardian, Novta Danyel Irawan, Sutoko Sutoko, I Nyoman Gede Arya Astawa
Knowledge Engineering and Data Science
Arabica coffee beans have valuable market worth because of their taste and quality, and there are defects like wholly and partially black beans that can lower the standards of a product, especially in the premium coffee sector. However, the manual processes used to detect the defects take an inordinate amount of time and are inefficient. This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap on the automated detection and recognition of the defects present in the Arabica coffee beans by creating and optimizing a CNN model based on a modified VGG16 architecture. The model applies data augmentation, rotation, cropping, and Bayesian …

Computational Modeling And Analysis Of Facial Expressions And Gaze For Discovery Of Candidate Behavioral Biomarkers For Children And Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Megan Anita Witherow
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Facial expression production and perception in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suggest the potential presence of behavioral biomarkers that may stratify individuals on the spectrum into prognostic or treatment subgroups. High-speed internet and the ease of technology have enabled remote, scalable, affordable, and timely access to medical care, such as measurements of ASDrelated behaviors in familiar environments to complement clinical observation. Machine and deep learning (DL)-based analysis of video tracking (VT) of expression production and eye tracking (ET) of expression perception may aid stratification biomarker discovery for children and young adults with ASD. However, there are open challenges in 1) facial …

3/5ths Of Freedom: The Analysis Of {With} Black Individuals In Higher Education And Navigating Society Post-Justice-Involvement, Gabrielle Sarah Smith Finnie
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Black individuals have been disproportionately involved in the criminal justice system in the United States (Federal Bureau of Prisons, 2022). Because of their criminal justice involvement, Black individuals are perceived as second-class citizens making their quest for “freedom” an endless journey impacted by oppression and domination post-justice-involvement (Couloute & Kopf, 2018; Johnson, 2021; Pager, 2003). To combat domination and oppression, Freire (1970) emphasized pursuing higher education helps individuals who experience marginalization become more humanized and aids them on their plight to freedom. Research highlighted pursuing higher education post-justice-involvement is a liberatory yet challenging experience because of discriminatory on-campus …

Whom Do Prosecutors Protect?, Vida Johnson
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Prosecutors regard themselves as public servants who fight crime and increase community safety on behalf of their constituents.
