Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Under NRS 207.190(2), criminal coercion is punishable as a felony if it is carried out using physical force or the immediate threat of physical force. However, absent the use of immediate threat of physical force, coercion is punishable as a misdemeanor. Here, the court determined that the phrase “physical force” in NRS 207.190(2) should be limited to physical force against an individual and not merely against property.

Synthesis, Structural And Thermal Studies Of Dl-Alanine Potassium Di- Chromate Single Crystals, Sundararaj Lincy Mary Ponmani, Soundararajan Gnanakkan Pushpalatha Gracelin, Somasundaram Selvakumar, Subbaiah Chelladurai Vella Durai

Makara Journal of Science

Amino acids and their complexes are organic or semiorganic materials that have attracted considerable attention because they can be easily used in optical storage devices. DL-alanine is one of the rare amino acids that crystallizes in anoncentrosymmetric group. This article demonstrates how DL-alanine potassium dichromate (DAPC) single crystals have shown sufficient growth. DAPC crystals were analyzed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction. Using thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry, this work also examined the melting point, thermal stability, decomposition point, and other thermal parameters of the DAPC crystals. Results show that the decomposition point …

Development Of Data-Driven Models To Predict Chemical Dosage And Energy Intensity For Different Supply Sources Of Drinking Water, Rehnuma Salsavil Mar 2024

Development Of Data-Driven Models To Predict Chemical Dosage And Energy Intensity For Different Supply Sources Of Drinking Water, Rehnuma Salsavil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG6), access to clean water for the entire population and sustainable management of water resources have been stressed. Demand for water is increasing due to population growth, economic development, water quality degradation, and climate change. More water needs to be produced for the community at lower treatment costs. The chemical dosage and energy intensity are two important factors that influence water treatment costs and sustainable management of resources as well.

Previously, chemical dosage modeling to reduce treatment costs have been explored but there have been more focus in coagulant dosage modeling. Other …

Home Is Where The Work Is: How Biases In Managers’ Resource Allocation Decisions Affect Task Performance In Remote Work Environments, Richard D. Mautz Iii Mar 2024

Home Is Where The Work Is: How Biases In Managers’ Resource Allocation Decisions Affect Task Performance In Remote Work Environments, Richard D. Mautz Iii

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the use of remote and hybrid work arrangements continues to grow, it is important to understand how these arrangements can yield performance. In this paper, I conduct two studies to examine how the remote work environment affects managers’ task assignment decisions across different task types and how those decisions affect workers’ task performance. First, I survey managers, in both a cross-section of industries and specifically in accounting, to study the effect of remote work on their task assignment decisions. Consistent with prior literature and economic theory, I predict and find that managers are more inclined to assign generative tasks …

The Rust Belt Gothic: Charting The Affective Politics Of Deindustrialization And The Emergence Of A Great Lakes Horror Genre In Film, Micheal B. Raines Mar 2024

The Rust Belt Gothic: Charting The Affective Politics Of Deindustrialization And The Emergence Of A Great Lakes Horror Genre In Film, Micheal B. Raines

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within the past decade, a string of notable horror films set within the Steel Belt has emerged. These works collectively invoke the specter of the ‘Rust Belt’ in their narratives: the industrial Midwest’s derelict urban and suburban sprawls in the wake of the economic decline and white flight of the USA’s once-mighty manufacturing sector. Scholarship has commented upon the subtext of these works individually but fails to observe their collective nature as an emergent subgenre in horror fiction, centered upon directly confronting the Steel Belt’s twentieth-century history of stagnation. In this paper, I examine films which share clear aesthetic and …

The Determination Of Pzc And Differential Capacitance Curve Of Platinum-Alkaline Polymer Electrolyte Interfaces, Chen-Xi Liu, Ze-Ping Zou, Mei-Xue Hu, Yu Ding, Yu Gu, Shuai Liu, Wen-Jing Nan, Yi-Chang Ma, Zhao-Bin Chen, Dong-Ping Zhan, Qiu-Gen Zhang, Lin Zhuang, Jia-Wei Yan, Bing-Wei Mao

Journal of Electrochemistry

Alkaline polymer electrolyte (APE) is the core component of modern alkaline hydrogen and oxygen fuel cells, and its single ion conductor nature makes the "electrode/APE" interfaces different from the conventional "electrode/solution" interfaces in terms of ion distribution, electrical double layer structure and polarization behavior. Due to the complexity of the APE and the associated solid-solid interfaces, fundamental investigations are challenging and deeper understanding of the structures and properties of such interfaces is in the infant stage. In this work, we aim to investigate the double layer structure from the aspects of differential capacitance curve and potential of zero charge (PZC) …

Broadly Shared Local Economic Success Since 2000: New Measures And New Lessons For Communities, Timothy J. Bartik, Brad J. Hershbein, Kathleen Bolter, Kyle Huisman

Reports

In recent decades, many local labor markets—especially those in former industrial areas—have experienced lagging employment rates, hourly wages, and annual earnings. Even in places that have thrived, disadvantaged racial and ethnic groups and those with less education have often fared poorly, and long-term growth has bypassed many Americans at the middle and bottom of the income distribution. This report examines the relative economic success over the past two decades (prior to the COVID pandemic) of different local labor markets throughout the United States, both for residents overall and for those of different demographic groups. We construct a new, publicly available …

Ferroelectricity in hafnium zirconium oxide (Hf1−xZrxO2) and the factors that impact it have been a popular research topic since its discovery in 2011. Although the general trends are known, the interactions between fabrication parameters and their effect on the ferroelectricity of Hf1−xZrxO2 require further investigation. In this paper, we present a statistical study and a model that relates Zr concentration (x), film thickness (tf), and annealing temperature (Ta) with the remanent polarization (Pr) in tungsten (W)-capped Hf1−xZrxO2. …

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematologic malignancy for which allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) often remains the only curative therapeutic approach. However, incapability of T cells to recognize and eliminate residual leukemia stem cells might lead to an insufficient graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect and relapse. Here, we performed single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) on bone marrow (BM) T lymphocytes and CD34+ cells of 6 patients with AML 100 days after allo-HCT to identify T-cell signatures associated with either imminent relapse (REL) or durable complete remission (CR). We observed a higher frequency of cytotoxic CD8+ effector and gamma delta (γδ) T cells in …

Axodetect: An Automated Nerve Image Segmentation And Quantification Workflow For Computational Nerve Modeling, David A Lloyd, Maria Alejandra Gonzalez-Gonzalez, Mario I Romero-Ortega

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Objective: Bioelectronic treatments targeting near-organ innervation have unprecedented clinical applications. Particularly in the spleen, the inhibition of the cholinergic inflammatory response by near-organ nerve stimulation has potential to replace pharmacological treatments in chronic and autoimmune diseases. A caveat is that the optimization of therapeutic stimulation parameters relies on in vivo experimentation, which becomes challenging due to the small nerve diameters (2 m), complex anatomy, and mixed axon type composition of the autonomic nerves. Effective development of in silico models requires tools which allow for fast and efficient quantification of axonal composition of specific nerves. Current approaches to generate such …

Chapter 17. Spoken Discourse And Second Language Research, Midori Ishida

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Spoken discourse is the primordial means by which humans engage in social life and it has been studied from an array of approaches with their own ontological and epistemological orientations to language and communication. The present chapter surveys two primary strands of research on spoken discourse involving second language speakers: (1) studies that approach discourse as a means of revealing second language speakers’ competences and their developmental trajectories, and (2) those that approach discourse as a site for second language learning. The views of competences have gone through diversification, from a focus on discourse competence for creating cohesive monologic text …

Twin Peaks: Matrix Isolation Studies Of H2s·Amine Complexes Shedding Light On Fundamental S–H⋯N Bonding, Matthew H. V. Graneri, Dino Spagnoli, Duncan A. Wild, Allan J. Mckinley

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Noncovalent bonding between atmospheric molecules is central to the formation of aerosol particles and cloud condensation nuclei and, consequently, radiative forcing. While our understanding of O-H⋯B interactions is well developed, S-H⋯B hydrogen bonding has received far less attention. Sulfur- and nitrogen-containing molecules, particularly amines, play a significant role in atmospheric chemistry, yet S-H⋯N interactions are not well understood at a fundamental level. To help characterize these systems, H2S and methyl-, ethyl-, n-propyl-, dimethyl-, and trimethylamine (MA, EA, n-PA, DMA, and TMA) have been investigated using matrix isolation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and high-level theoretical methods. Experiments showed that H2S forms …

On Pills And Needles: Students' And Clinical Nursing Faculty's Lived Experience Of A Nursing Students' First Med Pass In The Clinical Setting, Cindy K. Paradiso Mar 2024

On Pills And Needles: Students' And Clinical Nursing Faculty's Lived Experience Of A Nursing Students' First Med Pass In The Clinical Setting, Cindy K. Paradiso

Dissertations

Learning and teaching medication administration is a substantial component of prelicensure nursing education. The emphasis of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses initiative is to prepare nursing students to provide safe, quality care. Medication administration, which falls under this initiative, is a challenge for nursing students to learn and for clinical nursing faculty to teach. Consequently, nursing students graduate feeling unprepared to administer medications in their practice. This issue is prevalent and long-standing within nursing education. Most of the research studies conducted, though, are from senior nursing students and nurses. There is little research from the beginner nursing student …

Impact Of Brøset Violence Checklist On Safety Events In An Adult Mental Health Unit, Maritess B. Bernardo Mar 2024

Impact Of Brøset Violence Checklist On Safety Events In An Adult Mental Health Unit, Maritess B. Bernardo

Dissertations

Background: Workplace violence (WPV) is an escalating issue in healthcare that needs to be addressed to improve patient outcomes and staff satisfaction. Inpatient mental health facilities are at higher risk for safety event occurrences.

Problem: There is a practice gap in the assessment of possible violence at the practicum site with higher tolerance and acceptance that this is an acceptable event. The policies on deescalation are poorly implemented.

Methods: A pre- and post-intervention design was used to investigate the impact of the BVC tool on safety events. Data analysis included outcome measures on BVC scores, safety events, and de-escalation intervention. …
